The scope of this work is to be confined to those nations on the continent of South America which use as their national tongue the Spanish language. This excludes consideration of Brazil, whose language is Portuguese and which possesses a rich literature of its own. Another country is omitted, Paraguay, not from oversight, but because this inland republic is so backward in culture and development that it possesses nothing which can be dignified with the term national literature. Since the turn of the century the conceptions of New Testament language have undergone a radical change. Until this time "Biblical" Greek was essentially an isolated language. Two extremes had been followed in the appraisal of the New Testament Greek. On the one hand, the Purist insisted on finding parallels for all constructions in classical Greek. This was an impossible task. On the other hand, we had the Hebraist who found Semitic influence where there was none. Two separate groups of evidence have entered to break down these false conceptions. These are the papyri and the inscriptions of the age.

In this thesis an attempt has been made to trace some of the direct influences of Virgil's great epic upon Milton's Paradise Lost. The general similarities of the two poets and their principal works together with their similar classical pictures, the borrowings of Milton from Virgil's classical Mythology, and, most important, the plan of the two poems in relation to the forms of a good epic, were used as convenient points of division. An attempt was made to prove these points of similarity by direct quotations from both poets.
