Early in October, 1935 Italy began a war of conquest which had been announced sometime before. The general purposes of it were known to the foreign offices for about a year. However, nothing was done by the great powers or the League of Nations to drive home to Mussolini the fact that he would be met with organized resistance. Mussolini came to the conclusion that he would be showered with resolutions of disapproval and then allowed to proceed.

A priest who is also a student of English literature is naturally interested in the manifestations of the religious spirit as it has appeared in our literature. Acquaintance with a few finely poetic passages in the homilies of Aelfric led me to suspect that perhaps our ancient homiletic literature was worthy of more attention than it seemed to have received at the hands of scholars. Consequently, when the opportunity for producing an original study presented itself, the field was waiting for me; that of the early English homilies.

In the treatment of the character of Lancelot in the Arthurian romance I have tried to show the different conceptions of each author studied. The first section presents the group of romances dealing with the idea of Lancelot as an individual lover. At first he was merely a knight of prowess; then he becomes the lover of the queen. This association adds to his prestige as an outstanding character.

The metrical study, based on Frost's blank verse only, was made for the purpose of determining the quality of his blank verse, and the effect produced by the use of substitutions, feminine endings, run-on lines, and end-stop lines. The metrical tables have been compiled after a careful study of 1811 lines of Frost's blank verse. Ten of what are commonly considered among his best poems in blank verse were used as a basis for the study. The purpose, therefore, of this study is to discover facts which might show the present religious, economic, and educational status of fity-seven returned missionaries of Idaho Stake in Bannock County, Idaho.
