Tourism In New Mexico: The Promotional Activities Of The New Mexico State Tourist Bureau, 1935-1950., Mary Irene Severns May 1951

Tourism In New Mexico: The Promotional Activities Of The New Mexico State Tourist Bureau, 1935-1950., Mary Irene Severns

History ETDs

The growth of the tourist business has been a stimulus to social and economic life in New Mexico. Tourist attractions are natural to the state, yet except for upkeep and preservation, tourism does not have to be cultivated to any great extent with high capital expenditures to produce results. The very attractions which please the tourist may become a permanent source of pleasure to the people of New Mexico. Few residents of the state do not profit in some way, either directly or indirectly, from the tourists.

An Analysis And Interpretation Of The Structural Elements In Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, Archie Bussell May 1951

An Analysis And Interpretation Of The Structural Elements In Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, Archie Bussell

English Language and Literature ETDs

Very much and very excellent and scholarly work has been accomplished in the field of Chaucerian criticism; but this criticism, in the main, has been in such fields as technique and interpretation of Chaucer's poetry, Chaucer's pilgrims, tale-order, in the structure and explication of the original tales, and in special studies like the "Marriage Group" or "preestes.thre." It should be said in the beginning that this study does not pretend to throw any light upon such problems as have already been thoroughly investigated. My approach is to examine the structural elements between and among the tales which bind the tales …

Fernando Ortiz, Cuban Intellectual, Lorenzo B. Sanchez

Latin American Studies ETDs

Although of all the Latin American states, the insular republic of Cuba has maintained the closest contact with the United States, there is nevertheless one aspect of that country's culture of which we have but little understanding. This aspect is the penetrating influence that the Negro has on Cuba's cultural development. Until recently even the white population of Cuba did not fully recognize the role that the Negro had played and is playing in its culture. Cultural traits that revealed definite Negro influence were frequently attributed to aboriginal sources, or their origin was politically ignored or treated with indifference. This …

A Study Of The Wesleyan Doctrine Of Entire Sanctification In The Light Of The Apostle Paul's Use Of The Term "Flesh", Bern Madison Warren May 1951

A Study Of The Wesleyan Doctrine Of Entire Sanctification In The Light Of The Apostle Paul's Use Of The Term "Flesh", Bern Madison Warren

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The problem under consideration was an investigation of the Wesleyan doctrine of entire sanctification in the light of the Apostle Paul's use of the term "flesh" (sarx). No term, in connection with this doctrine, needs more careful study and analysis than does the word "flesh" as Paul used it in his New Testament epistles. Paul so closely identified this term with sin and salvation from sin that no one can adequately apprehend hamartiology (the doctrine of sin) and soteriology (the doctrine of salvation from sin) and ignore the Apostle's use of' the word "flesh" Therefore, the problem centered around the …

A New Testament Study Of The Gifts Of The Holy Spirit With Special Reference To The Wesleyan Doctrine Of Entire Sanctification, Oliver Raymond Ketterling

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

There ha s long existed a difference of opinion regarding the relationship of the gifts of the Holy Spirit to His work of entire sanctification in the heart of the Christian believer. Some groups have tended to overrate the place of gifts while others have seemingly rejected them altogether.

The Origin And Early Development Of Puritanism, V Ralph Weinhold May 1951

The Origin And Early Development Of Puritanism, V Ralph Weinhold

Bachelor of Divinity

Much has been written of the history of English Puritanism. This brief examination of the subject purposes no new contribution. It seeks merely to draw together the main events of that phase of English history and to discuss some of the issues involved.

The first problem is one of definition. One scholar has suggested that Puritanism has as many definitions as it has students, with a like distribution of trustworthiness. Therefore, before attempting to define it ourselves we do well to consider the definitions offered by recognized scholars of the movement.

In the history of American church life there have been four notable evangelistic movements. All of them have had as their purpose and aim the spreading of the Gospel message. Yet each of them has had a separate and distinct method which they employed to bring that message to the people of its era.

The Pharmacy Mural And An Investigation Into Contemporary Mexican Mural Art, Henry J. Caroselli Mar 1951

The Pharmacy Mural And An Investigation Into Contemporary Mexican Mural Art, Henry J. Caroselli

Art & Art History ETDs

It was the ambition of the author of this thesis to paint a mural. As a result of the cooperation of the College of Fine Arts and Pharmacy, it was arranged that as a part of this thesis a mural be executed in the new Pharmacy Building on the campus of the University of New Mexico. Because of this, the thesis has attained a far greater aspect of reality than it would have received had the author confined himself solely to a theoretical study of mural painting.

The New Mexico Cattle Growers' Association, 1914-34, Jesse R. Hagy Feb 1951

The New Mexico Cattle Growers' Association, 1914-34, Jesse R. Hagy

History ETDs

This study represents an attempt to trace the early history and development of just such an organization, the New Mexico Cattle Growers' Association. Founded in 1914, the Association had just finished its primary stage of development when it was forced to struggle, as were its remembers, through the early 'twenties, which were hard years for the cattle industry in New Mexico. The industry then revived and from 1926 to 1930 the Association prospered in the light of this revival. The early 'thirties again saw the cattle industry hard hit; in addition to their economic woes, the cattlemen had to contend …

A Study Of The Epistle To The Hebrews In The Light Of The Basic Principles Of Biblical Typology, F. Clifford Johnson Jan 1951

A Study Of The Epistle To The Hebrews In The Light Of The Basic Principles Of Biblical Typology, F. Clifford Johnson

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

For a number of years the writer of this thesis has been wanting to make a study of typology as found in God's Holy Word, to determine what types are, or are not. The purpose of this study was to clearly set forth the basic principles which govern types in the Scriptures as presented by various reliable sources, and to use these as a guide in this study of the Epistle to the Hebrews. This work has been limited to this Epistle, first, because its contents are largely a fulfillment of types, and secondly, because the field of typology would …

Ellen Glasgow's Virginia : The Background Of Her Novels, Ruth Jones Wilkins Jan 1951

Ellen Glasgow's Virginia : The Background Of Her Novels, Ruth Jones Wilkins

Master's Theses

Ellen Glasgow's native state, the Commonwealth of Virginia, was a constituent portion of her. "I am Virginian in every drop of my blood and pulse of my heart...," she said. With her Virginia she wove a rich background for her novels. At times the cloth was homespun like the background of the Burrs in THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE; at other times it was of a finer texture as in VIRGINIA; yet again it was a rich tapestry for people like the Archibalds in THE SHELTERED LIFE.

Ellen Glasgow has contributed to world literature, in polished, exquisite form, an unbiased …

The Historicity Of Shakespeare's English Queens, Winifred Constance Clink Jan 1951

The Historicity Of Shakespeare's English Queens, Winifred Constance Clink

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Critics, whether in the field of history or of literature, have generally agreed in their evaluation of the historical worth of Sheakespear's English history plays. Tillyard finds that the dramatist"... compressed into a popular and lively form an astonishing quantity of sheer historical fact.1 The historian, James Gairdner, proclaims him as an "unrivalled interpreter" who succeeds in presenting not only a general conception of the period from Richard II through the reign of Richard III, but nearly the entire sequence of important happenings. J. A. R. Marriott claims Shakespeare's history to be sound beyond question, and continues

Textual Parallels To The Doctrine And Covenants And Book Of Commandments As Found In The Bible, Ellis T. Rasmussen Jan 1951

Textual Parallels To The Doctrine And Covenants And Book Of Commandments As Found In The Bible, Ellis T. Rasmussen

Theses and Dissertations

The problem of this thesis is: What textual relationship does the Doctrine and Covenants of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints bear to the Bible, King James Version?
As a preliminary hypothesis, it has been assumed that there are phrases and clauses in the Doctrine and Covenants similar enough in construction and meaning to some of the phrases and clauses in the Bible to permit selection of samples from both that will parallel each other. Whether such parallel phrasing, when found, would appear to be a result of quoting, adapting, reiterating, renewing, alluding or simply coincidental construction constituted …
