History Of The Provo Times And Enquirer 1873-1897, Robert D. Anderson Jan 1951

History Of The Provo Times And Enquirer 1873-1897, Robert D. Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

The home of the Provo Times and Enquirer was a typical Mormon town founded on the east shore of Utah Lake in 1849. While some Gentiles (non-Mormons) had moved into the area by 1873 when the first newspaper appeared, the community was still dominated and controlled by members of the Latter-day Saint Church, which was the cause of some tension.

Even though after twenty-four years of settlement Provo had well-established farms, businesses, and the beginnings of industry, it did not have a newspaper, although publications had been founded earlier in several other cities of the territory. In the winter of …

The Union Army And The Knoxville Region Of East Tennessee 1861-1865, Caryl L. Stovell Jan 1951

The Union Army And The Knoxville Region Of East Tennessee 1861-1865, Caryl L. Stovell

History ETDs

During the Civil War years East Tennessee became politically and strategically important. It was a section strong in Unionism and natural defenses. Under Confederate control life was difficult for those loyal to the Union, and they pled for liberation. But East Tennessee was difficult to enter because of the mountains which surround it. Far-sighted generals saw that an occupying army would have to surmount the problems or supply. Even when the section was freed from Confederate rule, the civilians were no better off as far as peace and the comforts of life were concerned. The opposing armies, ill-clad and ill-fed, …

The purpose of this thesis is to explore and analyze the wealth of intrinsic value that is to be found in compositions originally written for piano duet (two performers at one piano). Only compositions originally conceived for piano duet will be considered transcriptions of works that were at first in the form of piano solo, string quartet, orchestra or any such medium other than piano duet, will not be considered in this writing. A Study To Determine The Value Of Music As A Therapeutic Agent In The Rehabilitation Of A Schizophrenic, Orval Zane Harpham

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Music as a therapy still awaits complete recognition from many medical authorities. any doctors and psychiatrists are quite willing to recognize music as a potent agent in relaxing tensions and stimulating activity, but thus far only in too few instances has music been accorded status equivalent to that of the other accepted therapies.1 In the treatment of some types of mental illness it is the writer's belief music lends itself as a therapy more readily than any other medium.

An Education Index For The California Education Code Of 1949, Herndon Carroll Ray Jan 1951

An Education Index For The California Education Code Of 1949, Herndon Carroll Ray

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Some knowledge of the California School Law is presumed to be a part of the professional training of every teacher. A specific course in State School Administration and School Law in a prerequisite to the securing of an Administration Credential. The courses offered and the resultant use of the Education Code are not enough to make members of the teaching profession conversant with the many and varied aspects of legal restrictions and permissions concerning the California School System. The ordinary layman who has not had even the basis training in legal knowledge is even more inept at finding the law. …

Aria Da Capo : An Opera In One Act, Burdette Marion Fore Jan 1951

Aria Da Capo : An Opera In One Act, Burdette Marion Fore

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Foreword to Aria Da Capo

The libretto of the opera is a verbatim setting of Edna St. Vincent Millay's one act play "Aria da Capo." World events, especially World War II and the current Korean War influenced the choice of this timely, yet timeless play. Miss Millay's death occurred during the composition of the opera. She never knew, therefore, of the composition or performance of her play as an opera.

The form of the opera is that of the "da capo" aria. he form, of course, was determined by the play which ends exactly as it started. Thematic material consists …

An Objective Study Of Ii Peter, Maurice E. Beery Jan 1951

An Objective Study Of Ii Peter, Maurice E. Beery

Graduate Thesis Collection

II Peter has been a very controversial epistle. To use the term, 'has been', takes us as far back as the second century, for the early church fathers were sceptical of its value and authenticity and some have claimed that it came near not being part of the New Testament canon.

You will note that this study is not a commentary but rather an introduction to the problems that have arisen concerning this epistle.

A Critical Study Of The Colossian Epistle, Vernon Bowers Jan 1951

A Critical Study Of The Colossian Epistle, Vernon Bowers

Graduate Thesis Collection

Among the twenty-seven books in the New Testament canon, there is an epistle addressed to the church which met at Golossae. This epistle isn't very large; in fact it barely consumes four or five pages in the entire Bible. Yet it is important; for with it there is left to the Christian world a remnant of history, both of the life of the church and of the life of her greatest apostle, which it would not have otherwise possessed. A great number of Christian communications which, if they would have been preserved, would have yielded many times over the information …

Campaign Songs As A Factor In American Politics, A. Eugene Anthony Jan 1951

Campaign Songs As A Factor In American Politics, A. Eugene Anthony

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In the days when the United States of America was struggling to establish itself as a nation, the prevailing type of popular song was naturally patriotic. Walt Whitman in his article “Slang in America” observes that folk songs, like language, are not an abstract construction of the learned, bu something arising out of the work, needs, ties, joys, affections, tastes, of long generations of humanity, and has their bases broad and low, close to the ground; because the final decisions of folk songs, like those of language, are made by the masses, people nearest the concrete, having most to do …

An Analysis Of Attitudes Of Members Of The Church Of The Brethren In The Pacific Coast Region, Merlin Leroy Clark Jan 1951

An Analysis Of Attitudes Of Members Of The Church Of The Brethren In The Pacific Coast Region, Merlin Leroy Clark

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The hypothesis of this study is that there is a relationship between race attitudes and "denominocentrism, " and with certain social categories, e.g., age, social class, income, education, etc., in the Church of the Brethren in the Pacific Coast Region. If a relationship can be identified and analyzed, the results will be of value as tools in helping to understand, predict, and change human behavior. It might be further suggested that if there is a strong relationship between attitudes and certain social categories in the church, attitudes of the Brethren on these issues, and perhaps on many more, are, to …

A Study Of The Relationship Between Hand Preference And Motor Ability In Secondary School Pupils, James Lynn Shannon Jan 1951

A Study Of The Relationship Between Hand Preference And Motor Ability In Secondary School Pupils, James Lynn Shannon

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This study was undertaken in an effort to determine whether or not left-handed students achieve as high pro- ficiency as do right-handed students in secondary school subjects which require motor ability. This problem came to the attention of the writer after he had examined the pre- vious writings in the general field of inquiry. It was found that mich of the material contained in these earlier studies had to do with the probable causes of handedness and what the effect would be to change a sinistral indi- vidual to dextral usage. Less material was found concern- ing the relative success …

Language Training For Missionaries, Laurence Mcpherson Farr Jan 1951

Language Training For Missionaries, Laurence Mcpherson Farr

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Every foreign missionary is confronted with one basic task. Without its successful accomplishment his work as a missionary will fail. It is the task of learning the language of the people among whom he is working. However laudable his motives may be, however great his consecration, and however capable he may be in many tasks, if he fails to gain the ability to understand readily speech addressed to him or to communicate his own thoughts intelligibly and accurately to them, he is working behind a closed door — a door which he failed to unlock,

It is the purpose of …

Hebraism And Hellenism As Seen In Sartor Resartus And Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship, Robert Roy Dutton Jan 1951

Hebraism And Hellenism As Seen In Sartor Resartus And Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship, Robert Roy Dutton

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Throughout the years the study of literary relationships has been a highly active form of research. There seems to be a perpetual interest in this field, with its matter of determining influences and comparing relationships and ideas. Certainly this is a logical interest. For on the assumption that literature is a search for truth, in what better way may we find that truth than through s study of the works of the world’s writers, searching for sources of their thoughts, and sharpening those thoughts through comparison and contest.

Those Carlyle and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the authors under consideration here, …
