The Concept Of Predestination According To Martin Luther And John Calvin, Won Yong Ji Jun 1954

The Concept Of Predestination According To Martin Luther And John Calvin, Won Yong Ji

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Only Saint Augustine and Martin Bucer are mentioned, in the paper, in conjunction with Luther and Calvin. · Luther and Calvin are the two men who are to have the spotlight focused upon them. The question is what is their doctrine of predestination? What do they teach and write and think and believe about predestination? Hence the primary purpose of this thesis is to analyze and synthesize Luther's and Calvin's views on predestination, and to compare them with each other. To be correct, we shall have to make a distinction between “Luther's views” and ''Lutheran views," ~ and between “Calvin's …

The Basic Content Of The Christian Gospel, Paul Harms Jun 1954

The Basic Content Of The Christian Gospel, Paul Harms

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

What is the basic content of the Christian Gospel? Why attempt to determine what it is that makes any message Gospel? As a church, we are very insistent that we are a gospel proclaiming people. If that is the case, we need to know what it is that we claim to speak when we speak. The very term "gospel” is used so often that it can readily be used in place of that which it supposedly names--the elements that compose it.

The Meaning Of The Term Βαειλεια Τοτ Οεοτ In The Parables, Marvin Middendorf Jun 1954

The Meaning Of The Term Βαειλεια Τοτ Οεοτ In The Parables, Marvin Middendorf

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The term “kingdom of God” plays a prominent part in the Christian vocabulary. Scarcely a sermon is preached without employing this phrase and scarcely a prayer is uttered that does not use this phrase in praise, thanksgiving, petition. That it an essential part of the New Testament is not doubted.

The Meaning Of Philippians 2:6, William Beck Jun 1954

The Meaning Of Philippians 2:6, William Beck

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

My aim was to find out what the text means. Some of the conclusions differ from the doctrinal statements of men whom I respect very highly. I made no special effort to uphold Lutheran doctrine. It was therefore reassuring to see how the text, freed of all encumbrances, strands there in its simple doctrinal glory.

A Jewish Family Of Thirteenth Century England, David A. Fisher May 1954

A Jewish Family Of Thirteenth Century England, David A. Fisher

History ETDs

There is a wealth of material on medieval Anglo-Jewry in the public records (rolls) of twelfth and thirteenth century England. These documents refer primarily to the financial transactions of the English Jews. Usury was forbidden to Christians by both the Church and the laws of the realm. The injunctions against usury, however, did not apply to the Jews. The Jews of this period were considered to be the private property of the king and were forbidden from engaging in all economic pursuits with the exception of money-lending. The crown benefited from the arrangement by applying heavy taxes on the Jews.

The Theory Of Recognition In American International Law, Paige W. Christiansen May 1954

The Theory Of Recognition In American International Law, Paige W. Christiansen

Latin American Studies ETDs

The problem of recognition has long troubled American jurists. Jurists have sought to detach the juridical elements of the problem from the political, and to formulate rules which might reduce to a minimum the field of arbitrary decision by individual governments.

Many questions have been planted in the minds of good Christian people by the myriad of cults which have spread abroad their doctrines At least four of these cults, Spiritism, Adventism, Jehovah's Witnesses, and Modernism are faulty on their teaching of eternal punishment. The problem here presented was: What is the Bible teaching on the future punishment of the wicked?

It was the purpose of this study to determine clearly and accurately what the Scriptures teach concerning the future punishment of the wicked.

A Study Of New Testament Prophecy Concerning The Jewish People, Virgil A. Brown May 1954

A Study Of New Testament Prophecy Concerning The Jewish People, Virgil A. Brown

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine what place the Jewish people will have in the closing events of this Gospel Age as taught in the New Testament.

Since the Jewish people have come into new prominence within the last five years, this study was believed to be an imperative one. The Jewish people have become important to the entire world, because they have begun to return to the land which God gave them so many centuries ago. They have not been and are not a group of people who can be easily destroyed. The Jewish people were and …

The New Testament Teaching On The Doctrine Of Entire Sanctification As A Second Crisis Experience, Dean W. Strong May 1954

The New Testament Teaching On The Doctrine Of Entire Sanctification As A Second Crisis Experience, Dean W. Strong

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Excerpt: "Any true study of the doctrine of entire sanctification must begin with the fact that God is a holy being. A study of this nature, except as it is related to the demand of God, has very little meaning. Dr. H.O. Wiley said that in the Father, holiness is original and underived, and in the Spirit, holiness is imparted. Holiness is a relative term when applied to man. An unbiased study of the Scriptures has shown that God has demanded that man be holy, and that man in his natural condition is not holy in God's sight. The problem …

A Study Of The Christian Doctrine Of Assurance, Glen D. Streight May 1954

A Study Of The Christian Doctrine Of Assurance, Glen D. Streight

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The problem was to present a clear study of the nature, evidences, and validity of the witness of God's Spirit to regeneration and to entire sanctification. It was the writer's purpose to discover and report the conditions which man must meet before the Holy Spirit will come to witness in any degree at all, and before He will come and abide. It was felt that such a study should include the manner in which the witness of the Holy spirit comes, the time at which it comes, the type of witness it is, its relation to the witness of man's …

A Comparative Study Of Teaching Methods Used In Selected Primary And Secondary Christian Schools And The Public Schools In The Fields Of English And The Social Studies, Paul W. Kirgiss

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

American education has drifted into the gravest crisis in its three-hundred year history. Deteriorating buildings and the shortage of teachers are only part of this crisis. Most important is what is being taught the children of this country and how it is being taught. Very subtly, in fact, probably unnoticed by most of the American people, highly organized left-wing and right-wing extremist groups are pressuring the public schools in an attempt to capture the minds of the students -- the minds of the future citizens of the United States. These pressure groups have already gained a foothold in a number …

The History And Philosophy Of The Joint Department Of Evangelism Of The National Council Of The Churches Of Christ In The United States Of America, Donald G. Varce

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Most of the major denominations of America are members of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in America. This means that they are represented in all the phases of the Council's work, including the evangelistic endeavors. The supreme purpose of the Church should be to bring a sinful world to believe in Jesus Christ as Saviour. The Joint Department of Evangelism was especially designed to lead the member denominations in this endeavor. It is important to study and note the measure of effectiveness which has characterized this most significant area of the National Council's work.

The Minister's Relationship To The Mentally Ill, Richard H. Tusant Jr. May 1954

The Minister's Relationship To The Mentally Ill, Richard H. Tusant Jr.

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

One of the pertinent duties of the minister has been to counsel with the people who come to his office about the problems of life. There are many people who, some time or another, need this type of counseling. Under the proper ministerial guidance they can meet the problems and come away with a sense of relief. The author made an attempt to show the particular ministry of the clergyman to those mentally and emotionally disturbed.

The History Of Baptist Missions In New Mexico, 1849-1866, Ernest S. Stapleton Jr. May 1954

The History Of Baptist Missions In New Mexico, 1849-1866, Ernest S. Stapleton Jr.

History ETDs

A history of the initial Protestant endeavor in New Mexico has never been fully written, perhaps due in part to inadequate materials. Records were either lost or, what is probably closer to the truth, never made. There are sources of information concerning present day Protestant churches in New Mexico, and there are sufficient records available for a detailed study from 1875 to the present. But for the early territorial period from 1849 to the Civil War, records are apparently lacking for any detailed study of the earliest Protestant missions.

Photographic reproductions in black and white were made of portrait works by various major artists in the Italian Renaissance and compared sequentially to establish a possible relationship of developing styles. Those which seemed to epitomize the most significant advances were chosen for the …

The Treatment Of Animals In Poetry From Pope To Wordsworth, David Kingsley Johnston Apr 1954

The Treatment Of Animals In Poetry From Pope To Wordsworth, David Kingsley Johnston

Master's Theses

The general topic of the treatment of Nature in poetry has become somewhat shopworn . Miss Reynolds' excellent coverage of that transitional period from Pope to Wordsworth has crossed the lending library desk into the hands of students and interested readers many times. Her effort is one of the first to reveal in a scholarly fashion a love or Nature and the manners of its expression.

Myra Reynolds considers all aspects of Nature. She seems to leave no stone of intonation unturned. In stating the paramount characteristics of the treatment of Nature as handled by the classical poets, she notes …

The Influence Of Juan De La Cueva On The Dramatic Technique Of Miguel De Cervantes, Shirley Edelstein Mar 1954

The Influence Of Juan De La Cueva On The Dramatic Technique Of Miguel De Cervantes, Shirley Edelstein

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

During the sixteenth century, the Spanish theater began to indicate the tendencies that the drama was to follow in the Golden Age, although there remained numerous vestiges of medieval drama, consisting principally of religious works called autos or misterios and secular works called farsas or juegos de escarnio. Juan del Encina (1468?-1529?), who is often referred to as the "Father of Spanish Drama," continued the medieval tradition in his works (called eglogas because shepherds usually figure in them), which are mainly religious in subject-matter. However, several are festive in nature and contain the first manifestations of the comic genre, …
