Charles Evans Hughes And Nicaragua 1921-1925, Virginia Leonard Greer Jan 1954

Charles Evans Hughes And Nicaragua 1921-1925, Virginia Leonard Greer

History ETDs

Secretary of State Hughes had charge of the foreign relations of the United States during the years 1921 to 1925. The diplomatic problems involved in concluding peace with Germany and her allies following World War I, in bringing about a limitation of armaments by the major world powers, and in seeking to adjust vital issues in the Far East and the Pacific area overshadowed, in the diplomatic correspondence of the State Department, the significance of United States Nicaraguan relations. American historians, moreover, in writing about Nicaragua, have been disposed to slight the period 1921-1925. Nevertheless, State Department policies in Nicaragua …

Leopoldo Alas And Naturalism In The Spanish Novel, 1881-1892, Charles W. Matlack Jan 1954

Leopoldo Alas And Naturalism In The Spanish Novel, 1881-1892, Charles W. Matlack

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

The present essay was prompted by awareness of the need for a study of Spanish naturalism based on the critical and creative works of those writers who flourished in Spain during the years of Emile Zola's greatest popularity, 1880-1892. Leopoldo Alas, "Clarín," was chosen as the central figure primarily because of the importance, still not sufficiently recognized, of La Regenta. The principal problems to be considered are the influences of Zola and his school in Spain, the differences between French and Spanish naturalism, and the relation of Spanish naturalism to traditional realism. It was found that the material could best …

A Study In The Theology Of Christian Social Action, Charles Freeman Sleeper Jan 1954

A Study In The Theology Of Christian Social Action, Charles Freeman Sleeper

Senior Scholar Papers

In this paper I have attempted to present a summary of my exposition of the theology of Rauschenbusch and Niebuhr, and of my own understanding of the issues of Christian Social Action. I have tried to reproduce in this short space the thought of these men, in a manner which should make it comprehensible and which should relate it to the larger questions of social action. This year’s work as a Senior Scholar has proved invaluable because of the discipline of self-directed study which the work taught, and because of myriad possibilities of future investigation which it has suggested. I …

Administrative History Of The Nauvoo Legion In Utah, Ralph Hansen Jan 1954

Administrative History Of The Nauvoo Legion In Utah, Ralph Hansen

Theses and Dissertations

The Nauvoo Legion takes its name from the city in Illinois which was the center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the early 1840's, when the Mormon militia was organized. When the Mormons were driven to the Rocky Mountains they revived the militia, in 1849, under its original title.

The legislative organization of the Utah Nauvoo Legion was carried out through enactments of three lawmaking bodies, the High Council of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Legislature of the State of Deseret, and the Legislature of the Territory of Utah.

F. Scott Fitzgerald : His Materials And His Methods, Clifton Lanier Warren Jan 1954

F. Scott Fitzgerald : His Materials And His Methods, Clifton Lanier Warren

Master's Theses

From the time I was first introduced to Fitzgerald's writing through a reading of This Side of Paradise, when I was a freshman in college, his subject matter and technique as a novelist have interested me intensely. After reading the first novel, I was not satisfied until I had voraciously read his other novels. With each reading of another of his books, my interest increased. Later, when Mizener's valuable biography appeared, I was introduced to Fitzgerald the man and have found his life as fascinating as his writings. However I felt that none of the books about Fitzgerald completely presented …

The Ruination And Expulsion Of The Miami Indians, William D. Siedlecki

One of the most profitable fields of exploration for the history student today is in the realm of Indian history. It was for this purpose that this study of the Miami Indians has been prepared.

A History Of Wasatch County, 1859-1899, Leslie Shupe Raty Jan 1954

A History Of Wasatch County, 1859-1899, Leslie Shupe Raty

Theses and Dissertations

This is an attempt to tell the story of the foundation and pioneer development of Wasatch County. The writer has tried to trace those factors in the pioneering venture which have made important contributions to present-day life in the county. This is also a story of the pioneers who settled here, a story of how they individually and collectively met the challenge of the frontier. But in addition to this, the effort has been made to picture one part of a phase in general Utah history, a phase which followed the original settlement, a phase in which an effort was …

Mormon Education In Theory And Practice 1830-1844, Virgil B. Smith

Theses and Dissertations

The problem of this study was to discover and classify "Mormon" ideas current between 1830 and 1844 relating to educational theory and practice, and to compare the theory and practice. The hypothesis is that there were discrepancies in the theory and the practice.

Freighting Between The Missouri River And Utah - 1847-1869, George Lofstrom Strebel Jan 1954

Freighting Between The Missouri River And Utah - 1847-1869, George Lofstrom Strebel

Theses and Dissertations

The problem for this thesis was undertaken because of an intense interest which the writer has in general Western History and more particularly in the History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As the thousands of emigrants moved west to make their homes, they brought with them only enough supplies to support themselves for a relatively short time. When those supplies were gone they needed replacements in order not to bring hardships to the settlers. Where were these precious supplies to come from? Some few principally agricultural products could be produced, but by far the largest portion …

The History Of The Drama In Corinne And Brigham City, Utah, 1855-1905, Rue Corbett Johnson Jan 1954

The History Of The Drama In Corinne And Brigham City, Utah, 1855-1905, Rue Corbett Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

It is hoped that through the inclusion of the history of the drama in Corinne, Utah, some interesting contrasts can be shown. Such contrasts are heightened when it Is realized that geographically the two towns are very close and that unlike Brigham City, and other Utah towns, Corinne was non-Mormon. During its zenith it undoubtedly reflected the typical frontier town characteristics more than did the Mormon town nearby. This fact provides opportunity for comparison of two societies as reflected in their dramatic activities. This comparison should assist in evaluating the history and contributions of Mormon dramatic activity by helping to …

The West That's Gone, Alma Cochran Kidd Jan 1954

The West That's Gone, Alma Cochran Kidd

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This is the saga of WIlliam Cochran and his parents-wire-recorded interviews of his experiences told to his daughter, who has arranged the material in orderly sequence, but kept his language.

He came west where the buffalo were, in the wild, rough 70’s, and on farther west to the cattle range in the 80’s. These were days when families moved to take up homesteads in the face of hardship and disappointments.

Bill followed civilization west and learned the cattle business. He tells of his experiences. He paints a huge canvas of people he knew - Indians, murderers, robbers, horse thieves, and …

Types Of Behavior During Labor And Delivery And Scores On The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, Bette Gloria Winthers Jan 1954

Types Of Behavior During Labor And Delivery And Scores On The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, Bette Gloria Winthers

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Purpose of the Study

The thesis of this study is that personality characteristics can be shown as factors in the variation of behavior which occurs during labor and childbirth. It is felt that if personality traits can be measured by a standard device they will correlate with various types of behavior expressed during labor. The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory is one instrument which tests all of the more important phases of personality. This test was chosen as the device to be used in this study to determine the personality traits of the women involved. Therefore, the purpose of this study …

The Contributions Of John Swett To Free Public Education In California, Will Shippee Cluff Jr. Jan 1954

The Contributions Of John Swett To Free Public Education In California, Will Shippee Cluff Jr.

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

To no one man can go the full credit for establishing and building the free public schools of California, any more than can any single individual be given full credit in any complex community undertaking. But in any communal activity, one man usually stands out, and in the case of the schools of California, John Swett is that individual.

Much has been written about Swett, the man, but little has been written about his contributions to the school structure of his adopted state. The latter is the problem with which this paper deals. In view of an ever increasing interest …
