God In The Moderen Novel With Special Reference To The Young Christian Reader, Walter Riess Jun 1954

God In The Moderen Novel With Special Reference To The Young Christian Reader, Walter Riess

Bachelor of Divinity

The modern novel carries a potent message. The Church ought make no mistake about that. The time for ignoring the novelist and his novel is over. We shall either or find a means to deal with the novel, or we shall let our Church suffer from it. But we shall not ignore it longer. The baby has grown far beyond expected proportion, and the church has a problem on her hands.

The youth of the Church are not, of course, the only ones involved in this problem. But it.is the contention of the writer that they are the most susceptible …

Principles For Winning Unchurched High School Youth For Christ, Raymond Mueller Jun 1954

Principles For Winning Unchurched High School Youth For Christ, Raymond Mueller

Bachelor of Divinity

Winning people for Christ includes, necessarily, these two main emphases: namely, evangelism and Christian Education. Those are the two emphases used both by the apostles and by the Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod of our own day. To these two emphases must be added that of youth work in general. Thus, this study forms a synthesis of Christian education, evangelism, and youth work, and it is an attempt at outlining a program which will best answer the question, "How can the Church win the unchurched youth for Christ?"

Then this paper will consider his theology, which will be done by a survey of the various loci in systematic theology.

The Concept Of Faith And Hebrews 11:1, John R. Nielsen Jun 1954

The Concept Of Faith And Hebrews 11:1, John R. Nielsen

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of the writer, as he began this study, to determine upon the basis of 11:1 what the concept of faith according to Hebrews actually is. However, upon a study of the Epistle itself, we have come to the conclusion that this verse neither defines nor describes faith. Rather it sets forth the only way in which it is possible to have a firm foundation for hope. It makes the assertion that it is by faith that one can have a basis and foundation for eschatological blessings, and certainty in the unseen spiritual realm.

Characteristics Of The Pre-Reformation Age As They Are Reflected In Some Selected Preaching Of The Age Particulary In Germany, Henry H. Wilhelms Jun 1954

Characteristics Of The Pre-Reformation Age As They Are Reflected In Some Selected Preaching Of The Age Particulary In Germany, Henry H. Wilhelms

Bachelor of Divinity

The history of preaching, the full record of which remains to be written, will also prove to conform to the above assertion about history in general. Its course corresponds, however, to a masked degree with that of general and ecclesiastical history. The outward events with which church history deals are often reflected in preaching; it bears the impress of the various forms of thought known to us as philosophies; the prevailing heresies affect it, either in the way of a traction or repulsion.

This research was aimed at a synthesized study of the genesis and evolution of the doctrine of non-intervention as an aspect of the public international law, but the setting had to be one of history and politics. An attempt will be made to confine discussion to the pertinent stages of the evolution of the doctrine by use of the case-study method.

The Life And Labors Of Eduard Raimund Baierlein, Walter P. Schoenfuhs Jun 1954

The Life And Labors Of Eduard Raimund Baierlein, Walter P. Schoenfuhs

Bachelor of Divinity

One cannot properly appreciate Baierlein's contributions unless one understands what has been accomplished before the missionary’s arrival. Thus, besides sketching his biography, the thesis will also discuss the early Christian missions among the Chippewa Indians in Michigan and the missionary activities in India before Baierlein's arrival. Particular emphasis will be devoted to Lutheran mission work in these countries.

The Wycliffite And Lutheran Element In The English Reformation, Walter M. Schoedel Jun 1954

The Wycliffite And Lutheran Element In The English Reformation, Walter M. Schoedel

Bachelor of Divinity

The period which this thesis discusses is one of the most important periods in English History. The years 1300 to 1550 show to the world why the Church of England is no longer a member of the Roman Church, This thesis endeavors to show how the teachings and works of John Wycliffe in the 14th century help lay the foundation and groundwork for the real beginning of the Reformation in England in the 16th century, and how the Lutheran element from the continent fits into the scheme of events during the early years of the English Reformation. Again we have …

A Prolegomenon To New Testament Language In Light Of Contemporary Linguistic Analysis : A Look At Paul’S Meaning And Use Of Theological Language In I Corinthians 2:6-16, John Stern

Bachelor of Divinity

This, then, is the purpose of this study: to look more closely at what scholars in many fields have had to say regarding the matter of human language and its ability to make religious assertions. In an attempt to define this purpose more accurately, it will be necessary to: (a) examine the field of contemporary Linguistic Analysis in light of its historical setting;(b) describe the relationship between the phenomenology of language and religious language; (c) consider the work being done presently in the area of modern linguistic studies in biblical research and see its effect upon the formation of theological …

The Latin Office Hymns In The Lutheran Hymnal, John Lemkul Jun 1954

Problems Of Administration In A Downtown Church, Harley Meyer Jun 1954

Problems Of Administration In A Downtown Church, Harley Meyer

Bachelor of Divinity

This thesis is the outgrowth of a vicarage year in Concordia Lutheran Church in Cincinnati, Ohio. This congregation is situated in a run-down area in the heart of the city and has many problems which are unique to a congregation in this situation, as well as many normal problems which are heightened by the downtown situation.

The intent of this thesis is to outline the many problems which exist, on the basis of personal experience and of the limited written material extant from 1933 to the present date. Possible solutions have been included inasmuch as they have been offered in …

A Study Of Hindu Eschatology, Kenneth W. Behnken Jun 1954

A Study Of Hindu Eschatology, Kenneth W. Behnken

Bachelor of Divinity

The eschatological emphasis as it is found in Christianity and its implications for the believer help to make Christianity the unique religion that it is. As God's revelation of Himself. to mankind, Christianity preaches an eternity with God, an eternity of certainty and hope. In contrast with some of the religions developed by man's philosophical invention, it speaks with certainty of the fact, of eternal life with God; in contrast with others it offers a living hope of an existence the marks of which are individuality, purpose, and bliss. It is in the latter category that the Hindu religion stands …

Luther And Evangelical Radicalism, Walter L. Bouman Jun 1954

Luther And Evangelical Radicalism, Walter L. Bouman

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this thesis is to explore the relationship between Luther and this disparate radical element of the reformation. For this purpose we must distinguish between two aspects of the Radical Movement. Luther was forced to relate himself to Evangelical Radicalism as a historical phenomenon. This aspect of the relationship will be discussed in Chapter II of the thesis. Of greater importance is the theological relationship between Luther and Radicalism. Here we are concerned with a tendency rather than with a Historical group. While this tendency found expression in a historical group, it was also present in some of …

The Universal Declaration Of Human Rights In The Light Of Lutheran Theology, Theodore Ernst Jun 1954

The Universal Declaration Of Human Rights In The Light Of Lutheran Theology, Theodore Ernst

Bachelor of Divinity

Emphasis upon human rights in the Charter of the United Nations is not a vague, gossamer thread ephemerally appearing, disappearing, and reappearing. It rather constitutes one of the chief cornerstones upon which the Charter stands.

A Study Of The Use Of The Phrase Faithful Is God In The New Testament Writings, Donald D. Schaeffer Jun 1954

A Study Of The Use Of The Phrase Faithful Is God In The New Testament Writings, Donald D. Schaeffer

Bachelor of Divinity

The concept of God's faithfulness is implicit in all of the Sacred Scripture; indeed, one could say that the Bible is, in a sense, the story of God's faithfulness. But only comparatively seldom does this attribute of God come to the surface explicitly. The purpose of this thesis is to study those passages and their context in the New Testament where it is specifically mentioned. Each of those passages is like a facet of a diamond, revealing a new aspect of God's faithfulness, high lighting another element of it, making our conception of it richer and deeper.

A Study Of The Paraclete Passages In The Gospel Of St. John, Dale G. Lasky Jun 1954

A Study Of The Paraclete Passages In The Gospel Of St. John, Dale G. Lasky

Bachelor of Divinity

This paper proposes fundamentally to make a study of the passages where the term Paraclete is found in the Gospel of John. The reference in I John 3:1 has been omitted for, although the Greek term used is the same, the references refer to the Holy Spirit.

The Three Categories Of Existence According To Søren Kierkegaard, F Dean Lueking Jun 1954

The Three Categories Of Existence According To Søren Kierkegaard, F Dean Lueking

Bachelor of Divinity

The goal of this thesis is to examine the main materials in which SØren Kierkegaard presents the three stages of existence. The emphasis will be on the chief content of each category of existence, namely the aesthetic, the ethical and the religious. We will treat the third category, the religious, according to Kierkegaard's own two-told division of the religious stage--Religion A and Religion B. It will be apparent in the pages which follow that the scope of this effort is narrowed to only the principal concepts of each category of existence. Material of this thesis does not cover the entire …

Luther And The Canon, Erwin Prange Jun 1954

Luther And The Canon, Erwin Prange

Bachelor of Divinity

The questions to be answered by the thesis are the following: What is Luther's attitude toward the Scriptural canon and what is the basis of or the key to his attitude? It will not be within the scope of the thesis to define or investigate Luther's doctrine of the "word " except where it may have direct and immediate bearing upon his treatment of the canon. His doctrines of inspiration and of the Holy Spirit will also not be considered separately but only in the immediate context of his attitude toward the canon.

A History Of Lutheran Missions To Islam, Robert E. Jones Jun 1954

A History Of Lutheran Missions To Islam, Robert E. Jones

Bachelor of Divinity

The paper attempts to gather the facts of the history of Lutheran Missions to Islam. The pursuit of these facts was hindered chiefly by two things. The first is that there is a lack or written material on this phase of missions. A large part of Lutheran Mission work today touches Islam only incidentally and the records of such work generally fail to mention Islam as a separate consideration. This is especially true in areas where Muslims and other peoples live side by side but as distinct groups, as in South India and the Near East. A comprehensive history of …

Pietism And Methodism: A Comparative Study, Alvin V. Kollmann Jun 1954

Pietism And Methodism: A Comparative Study, Alvin V. Kollmann

Bachelor of Divinity

Both of these movements stressed the personal side of religion, and because neither one intended to break away from the church, but merely reform it from within, they were similar. The similarity of the two is also found in the fact that they were both the results of their times. Both Spener and Wesley were influenced by many of the same things, another reason why people see much similarity in the two movements.

The Nature Of Man In The Philosophy Of John Dewey, Richard E. Sommerfeld Jun 1954

The Nature Of Man In The Philosophy Of John Dewey, Richard E. Sommerfeld

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this study has been to find, through an examination of John Dewey's writings, his thoughts and ideas on the question of the nature of man. Dewey has never spoken out on this subject directly. There is only a paragraph here and a sentence there. By employing these sentences and paragraphs as they came from Dewey's pen, a systematic and valid presentation of Dewey's position has been prepared.

A Historical Survey Of State Aid For Roman Catholic Parochial Schools In The United States, Clifford Peterson Jun 1954

A Historical Survey Of State Aid For Roman Catholic Parochial Schools In The United States, Clifford Peterson

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The thesis of this study was that the Roman Catholic Church in the United States has operated with varied consistency in its attitude toward the relation of Church and State as this relation finds practical application in the state support of parochial school education. Important in this connection have been the various statements and actions on the part of the Church as to who has the right to educate the child. It seems to be clear that the encyclicals of the popes; together with the official declarations of the American Councils and the united hierarchy of' the United States have …

Christian Participation In The Second World War, Ralph Moellering Jun 1954

Christian Participation In The Second World War, Ralph Moellering

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Naturally the "conclusions” drawn by the writer are subjective to the extent that they are based on his own findings and no one person can pretend to be cognizant of all the data that would be relevant to a study so comprehensive in scope. Nor would we deny that our ultimate aim in offering this thesis is didactic and hortative. We will endeavor to uncover some of the shortcomings and past mistakes of the established churches, and we will indicate what we believe to be some correctives and safeguards for the future.

The Concept Of ’Σδσ’Σ In The Book Of Acts, Norbert Streufert Jun 1954

The Concept Of ’Σδσ’Σ In The Book Of Acts, Norbert Streufert

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The aim of this thesis is to examine the Old Testament and rabbinic literature to see what role, if any, they played in the formation of the ’σδσ’ς concept of Acts. The Septuagint in particular deserves attention since it held such an important position in the Apostolic Church and so largely affected the writers of the New Testament. As H. B. Swete remarks, the New Testament writers not only were familiar with the Septuagint; but were saturated with its thought and vocabulary.
