Li And Law, The Perennial Dichotomy In Chinese Society : A Historical Survey, Willard Perry Norberg Jan 1958

Li And Law, The Perennial Dichotomy In Chinese Society : A Historical Survey, Willard Perry Norberg

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Of the many and varied institutions which make up a particular culture or society, enabling it to survive and prosper, and judgement as to relative importance or significance is perhaps impossible. Yet it is difficult to deny that law, defined in its broadest sense, with its accompanying legal institutions, normally plays a significant role. To the historian dealing with ancient history, the Code of Hammurabi, the Russkais Pravda of Yaroslavi the Wise, the Laws of Manu, and the Acts of the Saxon Kings are documents of immense importance. They portray in clear terms property relationships, behavior patterns, and class structure. …

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Why at the present time do we need added sources of labor beyond that available within the country? One faction would cry, "We don't!" Another would say, "We decry the importation of labor, but there simply aren't United States citizens in sufficient numbers to get these jobs done." A third group would probably answer, "Why worry about it? These laborers will come across the border, legally or illegally; we may as well avail ourselves of their services." Perhaps we should let a fourth group speak: "We must see that you do not misuse these people."

Revolt And Tradition In The Thought Of Emily Dickinson, Peter Randall Runkel Jan 1958

Revolt And Tradition In The Thought Of Emily Dickinson, Peter Randall Runkel

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to show two major influences in the thought of Emily Dickinson which contributed greatly to two antithetic doctrines which commanded her loyalty. One of these two was a reverence which she felt for the Puritan concepts of life; the other was a revolutionary trait that would not adhere to Puritan doctrine. The first doctrine was a natural one to be adopted by the poet. The Puritan way of life was the only "style of life" which she know and so, quite naturally, this kind of milieu satisfied her in many ways. But as she …

A Brief History Of Formosa, Ben Warren Mattison Jan 1958

A Brief History Of Formosa, Ben Warren Mattison

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Until 1949, when Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek fled from Mainland China to the Island of Formosa, few people throughout the world knew about that island of the China coast. Once Formosa became the seat of the Nationalist Government of China that little island has been much in headlines everywhere. Indeed, Formosa is of major importance in world politics and international affairs these days.

So much for a very brief sketch of the island itself. The story of its importance, its history and its development will be the purpose of the balance of this study.

It is not to be the purpose …

An Inquiry Into The Social Structures Of The Indo Aryan Community, William Guilbert Darling Jan 1958

An Inquiry Into The Social Structures Of The Indo Aryan Community, William Guilbert Darling

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

n view of the volume of literature already written about the caste-system, it would seem that yet another entry should ha been unnecessary. Yet it was precisely because of this mighty flood of titles that the present investigation was undertaken. Not only were there many conflicting definitions of the term "caste" itself; there were, also, many conflicting opinions as to the antiquity of the caste-system. In many cases, the latter problem wa was functionally related to the former. A definition of caste had been formulated on the basis of contemporary social practice. Then, this definition was projected backwards into the …
