A Critical Analysis And Study Of The Problems Of Intonation In The Band Ensemble, Harold H. Bartlett Jan 1958

A Critical Analysis And Study Of The Problems Of Intonation In The Band Ensemble, Harold H. Bartlett

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this treatise is not so much to discover heretofore unknown facts through original research; however, certain research is planned to assist in deleting the obvious handicaps one might encounter from using faulty instruments or mouthpieces, but rather to assemble under one cover practical data that may be of value in improving intonation in the band ensemble. Various definitions of terms will be established, purposes determined, opinion and methods of teachers evaluated, conclusions reached, and highlights of other persons’ experiments that may bear upon the subject will be presented.

A Study Of The Changes In The Contents Of The Book Of Moses From The Earliest Available Sources To The Current Edition, James Roy Harris Jan 1958

A Study Of The Changes In The Contents Of The Book Of Moses From The Earliest Available Sources To The Current Edition, James Roy Harris

Theses and Dissertations

Students and scholars of the L. D. S. Scriptures have long been aware of differences existing in the various publications of the material in our Book of Moses. To our knowledge no one has ever carefully isolated or analyzed these changes nor has any explanation been given either to justify or condemn them.

Our first objective has been to make a linear comparison of all significant publications of the contents of the Book of Moses. By "significant" we refer to those publications in which there are additions or omissions of words. All changes are then considered in the light of …

A History Of The Missionary Activities Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In The Near East, 1884-1929, Rao H. Lindsay

Theses and Dissertations

In the wake of the Protestant penetration into the Near East, Jacob Spori was sent to Constantinople in 1884 to open a mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Turkey. Spori and later his companion, Joseph M. Tanner, preached first to the Europeans of Constantinople, then projected their efforts down into the major cities of Palestine. Among the German colonists, the missionaries found several valuable converts, most of whom emigrated to Utah.

Ferdinand F. Hintze gained the title "Father of the Armenian Mission" through his extensive preaching tours throughout the interior of Asia Minor. He found …

A Personality Comparison Of Students Born In The Mormon Church And Those Who Have Been Converted, Grant Broadbent Smith Jan 1958

A Personality Comparison Of Students Born In The Mormon Church And Those Who Have Been Converted, Grant Broadbent Smith

Theses and Dissertations

The study of personality and its many facets is one of several significant areas in the field of psychology, which is being studied in detail. Personality, as a construct, is not often well defined and less often well understood, since it is a composite of such varied factors as perception, motivation, learning, culture and so on. Because of this present lack of clarity it must and will be discussed, written about, and experimented with until a clear, operant definition, acceptable to psychology, has been devised.

Madrigals Transcribed For Small Ensembles Of Brass Instruments, Robert George Ballenger Jan 1958

Madrigals Transcribed For Small Ensembles Of Brass Instruments, Robert George Ballenger

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

It has been the author's experience that music of quality is recognized and enjoyed by students in the schools in which he has taught. There is no reason to believe that these schools are unique. Music of quality is easier to perform than music which has little or nothing to say. The performer's attention becomes focused on the message of the music and he has a tendency to rise above the mechanical problems of producing the sounds on his instrument. Because many of the selections available to small ensembles of brass instruments do not move either the students or the …

Gabriel Harvey: Catalyst In The English Literary Renaissance, Gary L. Tate Dec 1957

Gabriel Harvey: Catalyst In The English Literary Renaissance, Gary L. Tate

English Language and Literature ETDs

Gabriel Harvey moved through the English literary Renaissance like a pigmy among giants. In an era of large personalities and great talents there was little hope of lasting fame for a mediocre personality, no matter how much this fame might be desired. Harvey lacked the giant imagination of a Shakespeare, a Spenser, or a Marlowe; he lacked the aplomb and knowledge of the world of a Sidney; and he lacked the insight into the foibles and follies of men of a Jonson. His learning and ambition filled part of the gap left by these deficiencies, but neither of these attributes …

Patterns Of Dissent: The Reform Ideas And Activities Of George D. Herron, Herbert R. Dieterich Sep 1957

Patterns Of Dissent: The Reform Ideas And Activities Of George D. Herron, Herbert R. Dieterich

American Studies ETDs

The search of George D. Herron for a means which might lead mankind to a better life was an important one in the current of American reform between 1890 and 1920. Herron--clergyman, socialist, and diplomat--has figured in recent studies of Protestant Christianity and reform in post-Civil War industrial America. His impact on Protestant theology in the 1890's is the subject of a more specialized study; in it, Professor Robert Handy of Union Theological Seminary states that Herron's "Kingdom Movement" was the "single most important phase" of social gospel history during the nineties.

John Milton : Religious Independent, Allen Herbert Scott

Master's Theses

In the preface to -De Doctrina Christiana John Milton makes it clear that his religious views underwent a continual process of revision throughout his lite, and he assures us that at no time during his life did he follow any heresy or sect. During the century and a half prior to the discovery of !!! DOctrina Christiana in 1823, however, Milton was regarded as one of the highest figures in English literature, passing as an orthodox Protestant of the Calvinistic faith.

Charles Austin Beard: A Free Spirit 1874-1919, Paul Lynn Schmunk

American Studies ETDs

The biography which follows, the first part of a projected three-volume work, will cover the years from 1874 to 1919, the end of Beard's formal teaching career. During this period, starting in 1900, he wrote more than fifteen books and a hundred book reviews, besides numerous pamphlets and articles. More than ten million of his books have been sold, some of them abroad, and they are still being reprinted. Eventually he became the president of both the American Political Science Association and the American Historical Association, and in 1948 the National Institute of Arts and Letters recognized his life's work …

A Study Of The Color And Imagery Of The Poetry Of William Morris, Kenneth Hugh Byron Jul 1957

A Study Of The Color And Imagery Of The Poetry Of William Morris, Kenneth Hugh Byron

Master's Theses

The artistic development of William Morris (1834•1896), dictated by an extreme sensitiveness to color and craftsmanship is almost wholly contained in the first well-defined period of his life. Until 1877 Morris was principally concerned with poetry and the fine arts, and from that time he concentrated on combating the rise of drabness, the result of Victorian capitalism, and worked for the cause of social reform. However, despite the great variety of Morris' achievements a unity was maintained in his love of beauty for its own sake. The scope of this paper, then, is limited to the first period of his life. …

A Reconstruction Of The Utopia Of William Morris From His Later Prose Romances, Edagr Fitz Randolph Erdman Jul 1957

A Reconstruction Of The Utopia Of William Morris From His Later Prose Romances, Edagr Fitz Randolph Erdman

Master's Theses

In her book, William Morris, Medievalist Revolutionary, Margaret R. Grennan says, "What the invention of the telescope did for space in the seventeenth century, the sense of the past accomplished for time in the nineteenth." In- other words, this "sense of the past, " though not a mechanical instrument like the telescope, nor aimed at discoveries within the realm of physical science, nevertheless served such men as Carlyle, Ruskin, Arnold, and Newman in much the same fashion as the telescope had served Galileo and Kepler some two hundred years earlier. If not renowned natural scientists, Carlyle, Ruskin, Arnold, and …

"Symmetric History": A Study Of Thought Patterns In The Prose Works Of Thomas Hardy, Edith H. Peterson Jun 1957

"Symmetric History": A Study Of Thought Patterns In The Prose Works Of Thomas Hardy, Edith H. Peterson

English Language and Literature ETDs

The history of Hardy criticism may be divided into three main categories. The first of these grew out of the natural curiosity of Hardy readers regarding the exact locations of his disguised places; and thus there appeared, in the early twentieth century, a fair number of books identifying "Casterbridge," "Weatherbury," "Egdon Heath," and all the rest of Hardy's thinly veiled towns, villages, and natural features of the West of England. Herman Lea's authoritative Thomas Hardy's Wessex (1913) put an end to place-hunting; for there could be little added to this exact and painstaking achievement which answered every question about the …

Milton's Conception Of Original Justice And Of Original Sin, J. Franklin Murray S. J. Jun 1957

Milton's Conception Of Original Justice And Of Original Sin, J. Franklin Murray S. J.

English Language and Literature ETDs

This study was begun with the conviction that a systematic exposition of the theology of original sin would throw new light on the meaning of Paradise Lost. The traditional and the Reformational conceptions of the conditions of innocent and fallen man examined here will provide, I hope, a basis for determining more accurately both Milton's own ideas and his adaption of them to his artistic purpose. Recent criticism has raised important questions about the meaning of Paradise Lost: Were Adam and Eve really fallen before they fell? Was their fall a "climax of self-realization," a maturation, or was it a …

Shapeshifting And Associated Phenomena As Conventions Of The Middle English Metrical Romances, Clarence Edward Long Jun 1957

Shapeshifting And Associated Phenomena As Conventions Of The Middle English Metrical Romances, Clarence Edward Long

English Language and Literature ETDs

One of the most popular and vigorous genres of medieval English literature is the metrical romance. For more than three hundred years it was the chief literary fare of nearly all classes of Englishmen, from the most literate like Chaucer, who could afford to burlesque the type, to the illiterate who derived enjoyment merely by listening to a retelling of these adventurous, chivalric, romantic tales. Each century since the fifteenth has seen more or less of a revival of interest in the metrical romance. The sixteenth century Englishmen, if he could read at all, whetted his nationalist spirit by reading …

An Analysis Of Basic Elements In The Role Of The Teacher-Sponsor Of Extracurricular Dramatics In New Mexico Secondary Schools, Peter Prouse Jun 1957

An Analysis Of Basic Elements In The Role Of The Teacher-Sponsor Of Extracurricular Dramatics In New Mexico Secondary Schools, Peter Prouse

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

Four basic elements of successful sponsorship of student activities are (1) conscious attention to educational objectives and the use of procedures and practices designed to reach them, (2) promotion of cooperation with principles and administrators, (3) sound training and experience in the area of sponsorship, and (4) encouragement of maximum student initiative, responsibility, and control.

The Social Responsibility Of The Local Congregation To Its Community, Alvin H. Franzmeier Jun 1957

The Social Responsibility Of The Local Congregation To Its Community, Alvin H. Franzmeier

Bachelor of Divinity

This study attempts to establish if a Christian congregation, the Church of Christ in this place, has any responsibility towards the community in which it finds itself as that community tries to solve its various social problems. In doing this the study aims primarily at definitions of the Church and the community and the tasks, goals and motivation of both. On the basis of these definitions it strives to set forth certain principles that a local Church and its leaders might use as they seriously consider the various social problems in their community.

Marxist Humanism In Dialogue With Christianity, Richard Lischer Jun 1957

Marxist Humanism In Dialogue With Christianity, Richard Lischer

Bachelor of Divinity

In this paper I will attempt to follow Garaudy's suggestion, mentioned above, and retain my own Christian perspective. With that factor in mind, plus an obvious limitation of space, much of the Christian doctrine of man will be presupposed.as I investigate Marxist humanism. The goal of this paper is not the isolation of two humanistic concerns but the description and analysis of their intersection.

The Relation Of The Healing Of Demoniacs To St. Mark's Kerygma, Robert H. Strickert Jun 1957

The Relation Of The Healing Of Demoniacs To St. Mark's Kerygma, Robert H. Strickert

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of the research for this paper is to investigate the kerygma in the Gospel according to St. Mark, to study the phenomenon of demon-possession and the healing of demoniacs in this Gospel, and especially to establish the proper relationship between the first two purposes.

Attitudes And Policies Of The Lutheran Church Toward The Negro, George Hans Liebenow Jun 1957

Attitudes And Policies Of The Lutheran Church Toward The Negro, George Hans Liebenow

Bachelor of Divinity

We believe that when Christian congregations make a distinction among people because of race and bypass Negroes in their program of saving souls a problem of moral theology is involved. Dr. o. P. Kretzmann, president of Valparaiso University, once offered the following steps to aid in solving a problem in moral theology, namely, first, there must be a hard cool appraisal of the situation as it is; secondly, we must turn to the New Testament and look at the divine will; thirdly, we must take the situation and the divine will and bring them together. In this paper we propose …
