We will briefly trace the story of its ancestory; its youth; its changes; traditions; then its glory between the years 133 B.C. to A.D. 262; its contribution to culture; its spirit; its contact with Christianity; its period …

Factors Influencing The Decisions Of Latter-Day Saint Youth Concerning The Selection Of A Temple Or Non-Temple Type Of Marriage Ceremony, Boyd C. Rollins Jan 1958

Factors Influencing The Decisions Of Latter-Day Saint Youth Concerning The Selection Of A Temple Or Non-Temple Type Of Marriage Ceremony, Boyd C. Rollins

Theses and Dissertations

It is the writer's opinion that deviation from temple marriage in the Mormon culture brings to bear a direct and indirect social pressure so strong that it effects deviation in other areas of the culture. This contention is partly borne out by a tested hypothesis that "Members within the Latter-day Saint Church who were married in the temple would have characteristic patterns of behavior which would differ from patterns of behavior of those members who were married by a Church official or by a civil authority". This hypothesis was tested mainly with respect to behavior after marriage.
The cause of …

Joseph Smith, Sr., First Patriarch To The Church, Earnest Morgan Skinner

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a biography of Joseph Smith Sr., first patriarch to the Church and father of the illustrious Prophet Joseph Smith Jr. The overall purpose of this treatise is of a four-fold nature. First, it proposes to reveal the kind of personality and character he possessed. Second, it intends to present a near complete and accurate account of his deeds and experiences. Third, it hopes to relate him to the historical period in which he lived. And fourth, by fulfilling the three purposes named, it will attempt to evaluate the assertions that have been frequently made that the Prophet …

An Explication Of Some Philosophical Aspects Of The Thought Of Orson Pratt, Joseph Willard Tingey Jan 1958

An Explication Of Some Philosophical Aspects Of The Thought Of Orson Pratt, Joseph Willard Tingey

Theses and Dissertations

No formalized philosophical system has officially represented the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to this time. Some claim there is need for one while others believe that none is forthcoming or necessary. Let the question be argued elsewhere. It is to be observed that metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, aesthetics, and science are all essentially represented in mormonism and should at least be recognized in comparison with their kind.
The useful practices of various epistemologies were employed for verification purposes although authoritarianism dominated the acquisition of knowledge in the infant Church. This need not indicate that the submitting authority was …

An Analysis Of Style Variations In The Book Of Mormon, Glade L. Burgon Jan 1958

An Analysis Of Style Variations In The Book Of Mormon, Glade L. Burgon

Theses and Dissertations

The majority of critics who have opposed the Book of Mormon have claimed the book is the product of one man because of the uniformity of style throughout. If these charges were true, Joseph Smith's claim of divine origin for the book and its contents would be in jeopardy.

Studies have shown Semitisms, enallage, and constructions amidst the Book of Mormon writings which seem to indicate that it is a fairly literal translation. If it is such, style differences among the writers should be evident to some degree.

The mental or emotional state of a writer fashions his writings. The …

A Study Of The Forces Leading To The Adoption Of Prohibition In Utah In 1917, Bruce T. Dyer Jan 1958

A Study Of The Forces Leading To The Adoption Of Prohibition In Utah In 1917, Bruce T. Dyer

Theses and Dissertations

The forces in the campaign that was to bring prohibition to Utah in 1917 had become identified with the prohibition movement by the spring of 1908. On the side of the drys were the various temperance organizations, the churches of Utah and the major political parties. Allied agaist the prohibition group were the combined liquor interests. Uncommitted to either side were the authorities of the Mormon Church, although both groups could seemingly lay claim to the support of the Church authorities when conflicting statements and actions of that body were put before the public view.

Dark Charades, Lloyd L. Alpaugh Jan 1958

Dark Charades, Lloyd L. Alpaugh

English Language and Literature ETDs

It is my belief that every creative act must stand or fall on its intrinsic merits without recourse to props or other would-be aids that anyone of authority or otherwise, might attempt to supply. After the fact of creation the only legitimate manner by which the author may attempt to strengthen his work is by revision. He may, if he so desires, use footnotes or appendices or introductions to explain what he is attempting to do or say in his work. He has no right to attempt to force the reader to accept or agree with what the author hopes …

Conceptions Of Formative Processes In Western Science And Eastern Philosophy, Glenn E. Kaufmann Jan 1958

Conceptions Of Formative Processes In Western Science And Eastern Philosophy, Glenn E. Kaufmann

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The central theme of this paper concerns the way Eastern and Western (sometimes termed Oriental and Occidental) thought view the formation of the world; the means of arriving at these conclusions and the concepts or pre-conceived ideas upon which they are based. Western thought has been limited to views that have developed out of modern science, post-1500; they are mechanistic science, evolution, Whitehead's philosophy pertaining to God and modern physics. For the purpose of this paper, the emphasis in Eastern thought is placed on Mahayana Buddhism, especially the Madhyamika school of philosophy. In India it developed in contact with many …

A History Of Morocco In Anglo-American Literature 1892-1957, Robert G. Wagner Jan 1958

A History Of Morocco In Anglo-American Literature 1892-1957, Robert G. Wagner

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Although several studies exist in French on the French and English literature of Morocco up to the twentieth century, nothing of a similar nature is extant for books on the country in English. Moreover, no previous study included twentieth century English and American books. A survey of the serious works on Morocco reveals that that country has been generally neglected by American and English scholars as an area for Investigation.

Shih-Tóu Hsi-Chíen, Progenior Of Soto Zen, Roy William Collier Jan 1958

Shih-Tóu Hsi-Chíen, Progenior Of Soto Zen, Roy William Collier

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Zen Buddhism has followed an extremely tortuous route, both geographically and philosophically, in its development from its Buddhist roots in India, centuries before the birth of Christ, to its present internationally important state of development in the world today. Buddhism, containing the embryo of the yet unborn sect of Zen, moved from India to China during the Sixth Century A. D. Zen came into its om as a Buddhist sect during the renaissance Chinese culture in the 7'ang Dynasty (approximately Seventh through Ninth Centuries, A. D.). The great Japanese Zen master, Dogen, initiated Zen as a movement in Japan in …
