A Study Of Depth Representation In Pictorial Art: The Psychology Of Development As Basis For A Theory Of Art Instruction, Patricia Tool Mchugh

Honors Papers

The main objective of the study is to propose a provisional plan for an improved teaching program aimed at the development and application of "spatial" relationships in the graphic arts. In the previous section, we have mentioned the role of past experience in building up the perceptual level. However, teaching requires that we make the best possible use of student's existing level of experience, and build upon that in planning the optimum use of the present experience. By the proper use of the immediate learning situation, we may assist students to become more aware of and project their understanding of …

The Symbolism Of The Holy Grail : A Comparative Analysis Of The Grail In Perceval Ou Le Conte Del Graal By Chretien De Troyes And Parzival By Wolfram Von Eschenbach, Karin Elizabeth Nordenhaug Jan 1962

The Symbolism Of The Holy Grail : A Comparative Analysis Of The Grail In Perceval Ou Le Conte Del Graal By Chretien De Troyes And Parzival By Wolfram Von Eschenbach, Karin Elizabeth Nordenhaug

Honors Theses

Both works, Chretien's and Wolfram’s, are literary masterpieces of the Middle Ages. The story of the Grail can be placed along side of Dante's Commedia in symbolical content. Like most medieval writings the Grail romances are full of allegory, remote allusions to symbolic relationships, and striking analogies, all of which leave us with a sense of wonder and amazement. First of all we wonder whether or not a connection, which we might find symbolical was put there accidentally or not; we wonder whether we are seeing too much or too little symbolic value. It is characteristic of the authors never …

An Evaluation Of The Beginnings, Purposes, And Influence Of Drama In Ogden From 1840 To 1900, Harold R. Oaks

Theses and Dissertations

During the latter half of the nineteenth century Utah was undergoing physical and cultural colonization. Four months after the first Mormon pioneers arrived in the valley of the Great Salt Lake, the site of Ogden city had been purchased from Miles Goodyear. The city developed slowly during its first twenty years, but when the railroad joined at Promontory Point in 1869, Ogden became the junction of East and West. The city experienced a peculiar economic and cultural boom not known elsewhere in the Mountain West or along the railroad due to the predominately Mormon population which now was imposed upon …

A Study Of Forces And Events Leading To The Repeal Of Prohibition And The Adoption Of A Liquor Control System, George Harmon Skyles Jan 1962

A Study Of Forces And Events Leading To The Repeal Of Prohibition And The Adoption Of A Liquor Control System, George Harmon Skyles

Theses and Dissertations

During the Nineteenth Century, a reform agitation known as the prohibition movement began to gather momentum in the United States. Led chiefly by the Women's Christian Temperance Union and pushed also by the Prohibition Party, this movement grew only slowly until a general spirit of reform began to sweep the country at the end of the century. With the W.C.T.U. and the American Anti-Saloon League leading the fight during the Progressive Era, the tide of public opinion finally took form in the Eighteenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, an amendment which forbade "the manufacture, sale or transportation …

Some Political Concepts Of J. Reuben Clark, Jr, F. Melvin Hammond

The Faith Of Their Fathers: A Study Of The Religious Influence In Child-Rearing, Phillip R. Kunz

Theses and Dissertations

Although there have been several significant studies during recent years concerning methods of child-rearing, little has been done to ascertain what influence an ideology may have on child-rearing patterns, or whether there are unique patterns of child-rearing within a specific subculture.

Specifically, the purpose of this research is to answer the following questions: (1) What influence, if any, does the L.D.S. religious ideology have on child-rearing behavior, and (2) what are some of the patterns of child-rearing in the L.D.S. subculture.

The Short Stories Of Ernest Hemingway : An Examination Into The Relationship Between His Fictional World And The Diction Used In Creating It, William Hantover Jacobs

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

It will be the purpose of this study to begin such a consideration by treating but one aspect of Hemingway’s art, that of the relationship between Hemingway’s view of the world, as seen in his short stories, and the diction he uses to create this fictional world. In effect, the problem resolves itself around these three basic questions: (1) What is the world like that Hemingway creates in his short stories?; (2) What is the diction like that he uses to portray this world?; and finally and most importantly, (3) How well suited is the diction for revealing Hemingway’s fictional …

A Study Of Henry James' Development Of The Narrator As A Technical Device In Three Selected Works, Robert Melvin Tarleton

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The problem or point of view, or angle of vision, Is one that deeply concerned Henry James all through his writing career. It will be the aim of this study to define James' position on point of view and the use of a narrator, and then, by reference to the works under question, to see how subtly he uses the limited omniscient or the restricted multiple point of view in his early novels and the intensely concentrated single "centre" of consciousness perspective In his later ones. To this writer's knowledge there has been no critical analysis of this specific technique …

A Study Of The Relationship Between Dogmatism And Ethos, Joseph Stephen Collins

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

William Brigance in his Speech, Its Techniques and Disciplines in a Free Society reports the German psychologist Zillig’s experiment wherein ten pupils were apparently selected at random, placed in front of their classmates, and asked to follow simple instructions, i.e., “Raise your right hands.” The other members of the class were instructed to carefully judge each performing student on his ability to follow directions. In actuality, the selection of the ten students had been determined some weeks prior to the experiment when a secret vote had been conducted among members of the class to identify the “most liked” and “least …

The Condor's Quill : An Analytical And Historical Study Of The Style Of Herman Melville's Moby Dick, Eleanor Burgess Kramer Jan 1962

The Condor's Quill : An Analytical And Historical Study Of The Style Of Herman Melville's Moby Dick, Eleanor Burgess Kramer

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In commencing the study of the style of Moby Dick, the student is confronted with several questions. Most important, perhaps, is the question of how much the style has contributed to the importance of the book, to the great adulation accorded it by many critics during the last quarter century.

Did Melville’s peculiar ways of expressing his ideas have some particularly timely appeal to the post-WWI Generation? It is a highly mannered style, unique as that of Tristram Shandy. Yet while Sterne’s book was greatly enjoyed by the author’s contemporaries, Moby-Dick aroused very little contemporary interest. Was the style of …

A History Of The Public Schools Of Stockton, California, Charles Dennis Bloch

This paper also points to the shortcomings and failures of the local schools, since there are also a part of the record.

Arthur Miller's Concept Of Tragedy, Howard James Stark Jan 1962

Arthur Miller's Concept Of Tragedy, Howard James Stark

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, Arthur Miller has been the subject of much critical debate. Numerous critics have stated that his plays are not true tragedies because they do not meet the requirements for tragic drama. Several other critics, however, attempting to some to Miller’s defense, have stated just the opposite. So far, the situation has not been resolved; and there appears to be little chance that it will, considering the manner in which both Miller’s defenders and sensors have been approaching the problem. First, they have been brandishing a term which does not carry the same meaning for each of them. …

Estudio De La Obra Literaria Del Chileno Eduardo Barrios : A Tésis ..., Edithie Ventura Peal

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The eye witnesses against MacArthur were members of the Truman Administration. Acheson and Marshall were the principal critics of MacArthur’s stand. Secretary Acheson testified that MacArthur had done a fine job in Japan and our allies agreed without policy there. Acheson replied to the alleged lack of policy by making a distinction between our policy and our war aims. Our policy in Korea looked to a unified, independent democratic government, but our war aim was to stop the attack on South Korea. Regarding the proposal that the United States take unilateral action if our allies did not support us, he …
