Australia's First Woman Senator: Dorothy Tangney Ba.Dip Ed, Judith Wall Jan 1962

Australia's First Woman Senator: Dorothy Tangney Ba.Dip Ed, Judith Wall

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Was it merely coincidence that the two women who were first elected to the Federal Parliament, were teachers? Dame Enid Lyons the first woman member of the House of Representatives, had previously been a teacher in the Tasmanian Education Departme nt, while Senator D. M. Tangney who was the first womo.n Senator, taught for many yenra 1n West Australian schools. Had the lessons of community welfare in the classrooms opened to them wider horizons and a greater consciousness of what women could achieve in the broader fields of politics? In the case of Senator Tangney this is undoubtably true, as …

A History Of The Latter-Day Settlement Of Star Valley, Wyoming, Ray Mccord Hall Jan 1962

A History Of The Latter-Day Settlement Of Star Valley, Wyoming, Ray Mccord Hall

Theses and Dissertations

The Latter-day Saints were good colonizers, possibly because they were repeatedly forced by persecution to seek new homes in the wilderness. Having established themselves in Salt Lake Valley (1847), they began almost immediately to expand their domain. Their Prophet, Brigham Young, sent groups of Mormons to colonize the surrounding valleys, and within a few years there were many Mormon settlements beyond the bounds of Salt Lake Valley. Bear Lake Valley in southeastern Idaho and northern Utah was one of these early settlements.

Star Valley--thus named by Moses Thatcher, an Apostle in the Church who thought it was a "star among …

The Relationship Of Empathy And Seminary Teachers' Effectiveness, Chet W. Harris

Theses and Dissertations

This study was conducted for the primary purpose of discovering the relationship of two personal variables to effective seminary teaching.

It was hypothesized that:
(1) There is no significant difference between seminary teachers whom the department considers as very effective (high-rated) and seminary teachers whose teaching effectiveness is questioned by the department (low-rated) in their ability to empathize with the self concept of their students.
(2) there is no significant difference between seminary teachers who are high-rated and seminary teachers who are low-rated in their ability to sociempathise (perceive student's social status among peers).

The Visual Image Of Joseph Smith, William B. Mccarl

Theses and Dissertations

For most of the period since his death in 1844, at the hands of a maniacal mob in Carthage, Illinois, there has been doubt about which portrait of Joseph Smith, first president and founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, best represented his physical features. This work has attempted to accumulate as much information about his features as was available for the purpose of establishing the true image of the man. The discoveries made by this study are listed in the following discussion.

A Comparison Of Musical Pitches Of Selected Compositions Over The Last Three Hundred Years, With Implications For Contemporary Performance, Deloy Davidsen Jan 1962

A Comparison Of Musical Pitches Of Selected Compositions Over The Last Three Hundred Years, With Implications For Contemporary Performance, Deloy Davidsen

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The pitch to which the present day performing musical organizations tune, and subsequently the pitch at which they play their selected compositions, has usually been accepted as being the actual pitch intended by the composer for that particular piece. This is not always true. The pitch of the note A, which is used by most orchestras for tuning, has varied greatly over the last three to four hundred year•. Therefore, the pitch used at the time a particular composition was being written may have been higher or lower than the one in use today.

Evaluating The Elementary Music Program: A Method Based On The Austin, Minnesota, 1959-60 Self-Survey, Leslie Eugene Dunlap Jan 1962

Evaluating The Elementary Music Program: A Method Based On The Austin, Minnesota, 1959-60 Self-Survey, Leslie Eugene Dunlap

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

It was the purpose of this study to outline a step by step method of evaluation for an elementary music program in which the music instruction is done by the classroom teacher under the direction of a music supervisor. This proposed method of evaluation was based on the beliefs that (1) the assessment of concurrence on all aspects of the music program between music staff, classroom teachers, principals, administrators, and parents, and the measurement of the reaction to and interest in music on the part of the students would comprise the scope of useful evaluation; and (2) for an evaluation …

The Relationship Of The High School Music Program To The Post-High School Musical Activities Of Selected Graduates Of Decorah High School, Decorah, Iowa, Classes Of 1940, 1945 And 1950, Elton Dresselhaus

An investment of time, money, or energy is frequently followed by an evaluation of the nature and worth of the project in terms of the results obtained. This study deals with the field of music education which represents a large scale investment on the part of the American public, an investment of time, money, and energy. It is appropriate on occasion, therefore, to consider the high school music program with regard to the value it has for the student and the community in which it is located. What are the values involved and how effective is the high school music …

J. S. Bach's Use Of Vocal Ornamentation, John A. Melrose Dec 1961

J. S. Bach's Use Of Vocal Ornamentation, John A. Melrose

Graduate Student Research Papers

In view of some misconceptions concerning the reading of these ornamental symbols, a study of how to interpret them accurately seems of value. Stenographic signs of later periods are superficially similar to Baroque ornaments and are frequently used mistakenly in performing music of the Baroque. Bach's embellishments should obviously be treated according to Baroque practice.

Fort St. Joseph Under French Control: 1693-1760, Cornelius Eringaard

Masters Theses

Preface

The purpose of this paper is to trace the history of Fort St. Joseph. In the process, I shall try to show Fort St. Joseph's historical setting in international and regional economics and politics. Regional and international events are included when necessary for this understanding.

Certain difficulties confront the researcher when he undertakes a study of this type. (A language barrier prevents me from reading my French documents which may have contained pertinent information.) Much source material is probably buried in the Paris archives, or in the archives of Quebec, two places I was unable to visit. I have …

Six Compositions For Elementary Instrumental Music Classes, Roger Louis Woodle Aug 1961

Six Compositions For Elementary Instrumental Music Classes, Roger Louis Woodle

Music ETDs

Need for the materials. For many years the elementary instrumental music classes in the public schools have used primarily only materials of an instructional nature. The principal goal was to prepare the students for the high school band or orchestra. However, more and more music educators are recognizing the need for interesting materials to provide enjoyable musical experiences for the elementary students. Most of the materials that have been published for the elementary classes seem to fall into one of two categories. They are either written very simply with little or no musical value, or if they contain any musical …
