Graduate Recital, Roger W. Wangerin
Graduate Recital, Roger W. Wangerin
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
In the teaching of woodwind instruments, the inherent differences of these instruments with regard to tone production, pitch characteristics and technical problems, make it imperative for the instructor to have an intimate knowledge of these factors. Through actual demonstration by the teacher, the student is made closely aware of the multiple difficulties involved in woodwind instrument performance. It was the writer's purpose in the recital to demonstrate the characteristic tone quality and basic technical facility on each of the major woodwind instruments in addition to some of the standard repertoire for these instruments.
Utah's Delegates To Congress, 1851-1896, Larry Haslam
Utah's Delegates To Congress, 1851-1896, Larry Haslam
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Utah existed as a territory for some forty-five years, 1851-1896. During these years Utah continued to occupy an interesting and controversial position on the national scene. The fact that Utah was predominantly Mormon, and that the Mormons were unusual in their beliefs and practices, made the territory and its people a target for the law-making body of the nation as well as the general citizenry. Utah was made an integral part of the congressional discussions and debates in almost every session of Congress during the period of 1851-1896, and there were repeated attempts to punish the Mormons for their "anachronistic" …
The Significance Of The Philosophy-Method Relationship In Contemporary Catholic Education, Marvin Harold Walz
The Significance Of The Philosophy-Method Relationship In Contemporary Catholic Education, Marvin Harold Walz
Western Evangelical Seminary Theses
The writer, after limited study in the field of Christian education, was impressed by the agreement between religious and secular educators alike that a vitality relationship existed between educational philosophy and educational methods. The course Principles of Teaching brought attention to the fact that each religious group had basic beliefs which constituted its theology; each group developed an educational philosophy in order to propagate its basic beliefs; each group employed educational methods to communicate the educational philosophy; and, the methods used affected the final outcome.
An Investigation Of Intermediate Sunday School Literature In The Light Of Evangelical Purposes, Merton Howard Peterso
An Investigation Of Intermediate Sunday School Literature In The Light Of Evangelical Purposes, Merton Howard Peterso
Western Evangelical Seminary Theses
Sunday Schools of the Christian Church have been largely responsible for the ongoing of Christendom. The provisions for Christian Education have had to rise to meet the level of the cultural advancement. Publishers of Christian literature have been challenged to re-examine their tasks and objectives in Christian Education. Improved communications and the great store of knowledge now available for the human mind have called for new approaches in teaching Scripture lessons. The application of spiritual standards to every-day life determines the successfulness of the Sunday School.
A Study Of The Residence Counselor In The Men's Dormitories Of The Missouri Synod's Preparatory Schools, Norbert Dettmann
A Study Of The Residence Counselor In The Men's Dormitories Of The Missouri Synod's Preparatory Schools, Norbert Dettmann
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
This thesis is a report of a study of the residence counselor program in the secondary schools of the Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod.
Necessity of the Study
The need for this study stems from the fact that fifteen years have passed since a statement recommending a residence counselor program was adopted by Synod.
Erasmus And Luther: Precursors Of A Mass Movement, Martha Reinmuth
Erasmus And Luther: Precursors Of A Mass Movement, Martha Reinmuth
Graduate Student Research Papers
In his book, The True Believer, Eric Hoffer, with Machiavellian detachment, sets forth a theory on the nature of mass movements. This paper will be primarily concerned with the aspect of Mr. Hoffer' s theory that deals with the setting of the stage for a mass movement--specifically, the temperament, needs, and motives of the men who perform this prerequisite act. Though many and influential were the contributions of other men to the preparation for the final act of church reform in the sixteenth century, it is generally conceded that Desiderius Erasmus and Martin Luther's names stand out in the boldest …
Sea And Water Imagery In Byron's Childe Harold's Pilgrimage And Don Juan., Albert E. Scott
Sea And Water Imagery In Byron's Childe Harold's Pilgrimage And Don Juan., Albert E. Scott
English Language and Literature ETDs
In reading about Lord Byron and his work, one comes to feel that more has been written about the poet than about his poetry and that the latter has served only as a sort of springboard for more studies and conjectures about the man. That is not an idle or an unfounded observation can be evidenced by the fact that no less a scholar than Jacques Barzun has commented on this point in an article of his—on Byron. Of course one is easily subverted into doing this very thing in studying Byron, for the man is a fascinating and tragic, …
The Created Conscience: A Study Of Technique And Symbol In James Joyce's A Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Man, Ben L. Collins
The Created Conscience: A Study Of Technique And Symbol In James Joyce's A Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Man, Ben L. Collins
English Language and Literature ETDs
Although Joyce completed A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man in 1914, no full-length study of the book had yet been written after forty years. The Portrait deserves closer attention than has been given it; it demands close reading if it is to be understood in the fullest sense.
The Expropriation Of The Standard Oil Company Of New Jersey Holdings In Bolivia: An Examination., Tey Diana Nunn
The Expropriation Of The Standard Oil Company Of New Jersey Holdings In Bolivia: An Examination., Tey Diana Nunn
Latin American Studies ETDs
In the late 1930’s the Good Neighbor policy of the United States was put to a test by the governments of Bolivia and Mexico in their confiscation of foreign oil holdings for alleged violations of the law of their respective countries. Mexico was considered to be the first real test of the Good Neighbor policy, yet the little known Bolivian confiscation of the Standard Oil company of New Jersey holdings preceded it by a year. The purpose of this study is to examine in depth the situation as it occurred in Bolivia.
An Introduction To John Dowland's Lute Songs, Anne Laverne Morrow
An Introduction To John Dowland's Lute Songs, Anne Laverne Morrow
Honors Theses
Even a brief glance at the context of John Dowland's life can be helpful in arranging insights into an introductory understanding of his life and music. Dr. Edmud Fellowes, one of the great scholars of this period of music history, said that the English have always appeared to prefer vocal music over instrumental music. And one of the eras when England "stood first in music", he said was during the Elizabethan days and up to the close of the Tudor period.
Before the great flourishing of the madrigals and lute songs in England there were English secular songs, but little …
Ideological Aspects Of The Mexican Revolution (1910), Jacquelyn Hillman
Ideological Aspects Of The Mexican Revolution (1910), Jacquelyn Hillman
Latin American Studies ETDs
The main purpose of this thesis is to study the ideology of the Mexican Revolution of 1910. When an intense feeling of protest directed towards the Díaz regime and everything it represented emerged, the dissension involved many views as to the best way to solve the conflict at hand.
College Life In Ante-Bellum Virginia, Diane Keith Light
College Life In Ante-Bellum Virginia, Diane Keith Light
Honors Theses
In comparison with contemporary collegiate experiences, college life in ante-bellum Virginia offers many contrasts. The college curriculum, teaching methods, student regulations, and behavior were manifestations of nineteenth century thought. These facets combined to form the existence of the institution and its inhabitants.
The 1912 Presidential Election In Utah, C. Austin Wahlquist
The 1912 Presidential Election In Utah, C. Austin Wahlquist
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to determine why, in the light of local conditions and problems, Utah chose to support President Taft. Why Did Utah prefer the conservative policies of this nationally unpopular figure, while the rest of the nation favored the progressivism of Wilson or the progressivism of Roosevelt? What were the national issues which affected Utah? Who exercised political control in the state? What was the party alignment? How important was newspaper opinion? To what extent was personal friendship for Taft, on the part of local Republican leaders, a factor? Did a recent outbreak of Mormon-non-Mormon friction …

Four Oil Paintings Illustrating Book Of Mormon Events, Ernel Leroy Anderson
Four Oil Paintings Illustrating Book Of Mormon Events, Ernel Leroy Anderson
Theses and Dissertations
The problem was to create four oil paintings which illustrate Book of Mormon events.
The Book of Mormon seems to hold forth great promise to the painter of religious subjects, but to the present only a limited number of artists have made use of this rich source. There is a need for good illustrations to help these scriptures come to life for the Book of Mormon reader.
A Historical Study Of The Mormon Temple At Nauvoo, Illinois, Don F. Colvin
A Historical Study Of The Mormon Temple At Nauvoo, Illinois, Don F. Colvin
Theses and Dissertations
The Nauvoo Temple was a unique structure, one which symbolized "Mormonism" in the early period of its history. In its time, the temple stood as the chief structure of the city of Nauvoo. It rivaled all buildings in Illinois and the West during its brief history.
This study reviews the entire history of the temple, from when it was first contemplated until its fateful destruction, and beyond. It sheds light on the setting in which the great edifice was built. Consideration is given to the struggles and sacrifices on the part of workmen and church members who freely gave to …

Important Developments In The Grand Jury System In Virginia During The Seventeenth And Eighteenth Centuries, Melvin Dean Snead
Important Developments In The Grand Jury System In Virginia During The Seventeenth And Eighteenth Centuries, Melvin Dean Snead
Master's Theses
By March of 1658 tho grand jury system in Virginia was found to be sadly lacking. It had scarcely lasted ten years. Probably the reason for this failure was that the county justices failed to carry out the details of establishing grand juries. Because or Virginia's rural setting, this system would surely have been a worthwhile one. It seems to be quite evident that here we had a powerful instrument for aiding in criminal detection, and at the same time an instrument for protecting the innocent. However, it was not used to its best advantage and as a result it …
Through A Glass Darkly : The Literary Reputation Of Henry James, Linda Goodman Lewis
Through A Glass Darkly : The Literary Reputation Of Henry James, Linda Goodman Lewis
Master's Theses
In the course of any artist's career there usually are changes in the attitudes towards him. If he is developing, the changes should be a fact, especially if the times are changing also. If the artist does not show any differences during his career, there is little point in his creating the first product.
William Butler Yeats' Contribution To The Celtic Renaissance In Ireland, Marian Marsh Sale
William Butler Yeats' Contribution To The Celtic Renaissance In Ireland, Marian Marsh Sale
Master's Theses
The story of Ireland's Literary Revival is the story not only of the life and death of the Gaelic language in Ireland and the attempt to revive it as the national medium of speech, but also of the rise, during the last quarter of the nineteenth century, of modern Anglo-Irish literature, which gave to Irish letters the right to be judged independently of English literature. The formation of this new medium of national literary expression was the result of the interaction of the work of certain translators and folklorists with that of those writers who sought to restore the Gaelic …
Clerical Portraits In The Nineteenth Century British Novel, Doralee Forsythe Richardson
Clerical Portraits In The Nineteenth Century British Novel, Doralee Forsythe Richardson
Master's Theses
Because there were only four recognized professions which a nineteenth century respectable English gentleman could enter and still maintain his family reputation--the army, the navy, and church, and the bar-- it is natural that clergymen should appear frequently in the novels of the period. Through the eyes of numerous novelists one can come to understand better the roles and the personalities of the men of cloth during the 1800's.
By way of limiting myself to a reasonable amount of material, I have chosen to concentrate on those novels in which a clerical scene provides the major characters and action. In …
The Public Career Of Robert Carter Nicholas, Robert Miller Saunders
The Public Career Of Robert Carter Nicholas, Robert Miller Saunders
Master's Theses
Although time has obscured his reputation, Robert carter Nicholas exercised considerable influence in pre-Revolutionary Virginia. Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, George Washington and other familiar revolutionary figures knew him well and respected both his ability and integrity. In fact, Nicholas had already established himself as a power in Virginia politics when the men mentioned above were just stepping onto the stage of Virginia history.
Cabell's Rational Morality As Expressed Through The Dream-Vision Technique In Jurgen, Ruth Macdonald Stevenson
Cabell's Rational Morality As Expressed Through The Dream-Vision Technique In Jurgen, Ruth Macdonald Stevenson
Master's Theses
The various parts of this study deal with various episodes in Jurgen, episodes in which Jurgen progresses from one region to another and from one set of circumstances to another with no very immediately apparent relationship between any two of his adventures. This apparent lack of unity is deceiving. What witness, if we are perceptive, is not an aimless progression to region after region but a series of related allegories, each of which concerns itself with some aspect of reality, the moral values involved therein, and man's "reasonable" adjustment to these realities. The unity of this thesis rests upon the …
The Treatment Of The Arthurian Material In Tennyson's Idylls, Margaret Bishop
The Treatment Of The Arthurian Material In Tennyson's Idylls, Margaret Bishop
Theses
This thesis examines instances of Arthurian themes in the works of Alfred, Lord Tennyson, specifically the Idylls of the King. It includes a historical sketch of the Arthurian epic, along with concentrations on specific aspects of Arthurian lore, such as the coming of Arthur, Lancelot and Elaine, the quest for the Holy Grail, and Arthur's death.
Characteristics Of Closed Christian Churches In Selected States, 1920-1957, Charles Beecher Barr
Characteristics Of Closed Christian Churches In Selected States, 1920-1957, Charles Beecher Barr
Graduate Thesis Collection
It is not the purpose of this study to find the answer to the question which has often been asked, "Why have so many churches closed?" Finding the answer to this question is possibly an ultimate or underlying purpose, but it is not anticipated that the study will answer the question. Very little study is given to the processes which operate to cause the demise of particular congregations. Attention is rather focused on statistical data which are easily obtainable and the attempt is made to determine which of these are significantly related to the fact of closing.
Love And Isolation In Hawthorne's Fiction, Betty L. Dixon
Love And Isolation In Hawthorne's Fiction, Betty L. Dixon
Graduate Thesis Collection
Modern critics and biographers often cite the need for a new study of Hawthorne and his wife, for a study of sex and sex symbolism in Hawthorne, and for a study of the love element in general in his works. Such aspects of his fiction have been all but totally overlooked by earlier critics who confined their comments largely to the sin and isolation of the characters. This paper cannot hope to satisfy any one of these needs, but does undertake to look at Hawthorne's treatment of the remedial effects of heterosexual love in lives where such love operates, and …
