Musilian Concept Of Modern Man, Cynthia J. Peters Jan 1963

Musilian Concept Of Modern Man, Cynthia J. Peters

Senior Scholar Papers

German-Austrian Robert Musil (1880-1942) is considered an artist with an extremely unorthodox conception of art to a basic human problem. In his time, there existed a dissociation of substance from social values. Musil actually started with this foundation in considering the taunting dilemma that the accelerating technology of the century is overstepping each day the ability of the human mind to adjust to it. Musil maintained that social organization, patterns of thought and cherished ideals correspond to a reality that no longer exists

A History Of The Evangelical Alliance: Pioneer In Christian Co-Operation, Glenn E. Besco Jan 1963

A History Of The Evangelical Alliance: Pioneer In Christian Co-Operation, Glenn E. Besco

Honors Papers

This study is an attempt to trace the history of the Evangelical Alliance. I was introduced to the Alliance by the biography of Philip Schaff. It appeared that this was an interesting and unexplored area of Church history. The Evangelical Alliance has been overlooked by most popular historians of the ecumenical movement. The only work that presents a comprehensive study is the all-embracing history of the ecumenical movement by Ruth Rouse and Stephen C. Neill. Even the renowned Church historian Kenneth S. Latourette relies upon Rouse and Neill' s work for the note he makes of the Alliance. I am …

The Use Of Tape Recordings In Teaching Local History, Ruth Bates Rickett Jan 1963

The Use Of Tape Recordings In Teaching Local History, Ruth Bates Rickett

CGU Theses & Dissertations

The problem of the thesis is to develop rationale for the teaching of local history in the schools through the use of recorded documentary statements by eyewitnesses to local events. As illustrative of this mode of teaching local history, a series of recordings are made in which the residents of the Pomona, California, area who were eyewitnesses to the local events or who could relate reliable hearsay about the history of Pomona are interviewed. A research methodology for the taking, editing, and cataloguing of these tape recordings for school use is developed and executed.

Richmond Renascence: The Virginia Writers' Club Of The 1920'S, Betty Farley Jan 1963

Richmond Renascence: The Virginia Writers' Club Of The 1920'S, Betty Farley

Theses & Honors Papers

This somewhat historical approach to a literary topic, the Virginia Writers' Club and its progeny, a small literary magazine, The Reviewer, is concerned primarily with the presentation of evidence that there was a great deal of writing in Richmond, Virginia, in the early 1920"s. Although insufficient research materials available locally provide scanty basis for a critical analysis of the many works of these writers, I feel that the existence of the club, the motivation for its formation, and the kind of atmosphere that it produced deserve attention.

A Follow-Up Study Of Four Selected Seminaries To Determine The Effect The Seminary Program Has Had In Helping To Prepare Their Graduates To Be More Effective Missionaries Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, James Gordon Vaughan Jan 1963

A Follow-Up Study Of Four Selected Seminaries To Determine The Effect The Seminary Program Has Had In Helping To Prepare Their Graduates To Be More Effective Missionaries Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, James Gordon Vaughan

Theses and Dissertations

In view of the aforementioned emphasis on the missionary program of the Church there was a felt need by the author, with encouragement from Ernest Eberhard Jr., of the Department of Education, to do a follow-up study to determine what effect the seminary program has had and is now having upon the lives of its graduates now in the mission field. Only the missionaries who arenow in the mission field and who are seminary graduates of four selected seminaries are used in this study.
There are three major areas of seminary influence and effectiveness that this study attempts to determine. …

A History Of The Latter-Day Saint Settlement Of Oakley, Idaho, Wayne R. Boothe Jan 1963

A History Of The Latter-Day Saint Settlement Of Oakley, Idaho, Wayne R. Boothe

Theses and Dissertations

Oakley is located in southern Idaho in the Goose Creek Valley, an area traversed by trappers and explorers who named the streams and left accounts of their experiences and travels. It was a rendezvous for Indians who went there to gather pine nuts and get wild game for their winter's meat.

An emigration trail was located south of Oakley, where thousands wended their way to California. Emigrants going to Oregon from the East branched off this trail at the City of Rocks and came down Birch Creek to the Rock Creek Stage Station, southeast of the present town of Twin …

A History Of The Discontinued Mediterranean Missions Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Ralph L. Cottrell Jr. Jan 1963

A History Of The Discontinued Mediterranean Missions Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Ralph L. Cottrell Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been a proselyting organization almost since its founding. The first missionary for the Church was Samuel Harrison Smith, who was sent by his brother Joseph Smith to sell The Book of Mormon in the area of Livonia, New York. Elder Orson Pratt preached the first sermon outside of the United States, and because many of the listeners had relatives in England, the Church was able to introduce its message to the people of Great Britain. Missionary work of the Church has primarily been to the Christian nations, even though during the …

A History Of Brigham Young's Indian Superintendency (1851-1857): Problems And Accomplishments, Fred R. Gowans Jan 1963

A History Of Brigham Young's Indian Superintendency (1851-1857): Problems And Accomplishments, Fred R. Gowans

Theses and Dissertations

The problem of this study was two-fold: first, to determine the accomplishments of the Utah Territorial Indian Superintendency during Brigham Young's term in office; and second, to study the difficulties which hindered this superintendency from functioning in a manner which would be most beneficial to the Indian people. These difficulties fit into three major groups: friction within the superintendency, Indian depredations, and lack of cooperation on the part of the Federal Government.

The main sources of information for this study were the official letters sent by the superintendency to the Indian Commission in Washington. Letters sent from Washington to the …

Why John C. Calhoun Switched From Nationalism To Sectionalism, Matharee J. Boles

Theses

This thesis presents the several aspects of John Caldwell Calhoun's life that could have caused him to change, if he did change, from his intensely patriotic attitude of nationalism to an equally zealous sectionalist who was accused of leading his state and later the entire South in open rebellion against the union.

A Historical Study Of The Role Of The Industrialist In The Tobacco, Flour And Textile Industries Of Virginia 1860-1890, Leslie Winston Smith Jan 1963

A Historical Study Of The Role Of The Industrialist In The Tobacco, Flour And Textile Industries Of Virginia 1860-1890, Leslie Winston Smith

Master's Theses

The primary objective of this study is to ascertain what part, if any, the prominent industrialists of Virginia, in the postwar-pretwentieth century period, played in the economic rejuvenation of a state that was ravaged for four years by invaders and defenders alike. Cognizant of the fact that Virginia industry after 1865 was attending a degree of diversification, nonetheless, this study will be limited to three primary industries, namely tobacco, flour and textiles. Even though these three industries, with the possible exception of textiles, were found in most towns and cities throughout the state, only four cities have been selected for …

John Milton's Theory Of Religious Toleration, Roger Shade Wilson Jan 1963

John Milton's Theory Of Religious Toleration, Roger Shade Wilson

Master's Theses

The purpose of this study is to show that John ilton and his contemporaries (such as John Goodwin and Roger Williams) never had in mind a broad conception of religious toleration to be extended to persons of all faiths, whether they were Christians, Jews, Turks, or the like, but, because of their conceptions of Christian liberty, advocated a theory of religious toleration to be extended only to Protestant Christians who were entitled to Christian liberty--e.g., the regenerate. The basis Milton and his contemporaries used for drawing their conclusions developed logically from the gospel of Paul through St. Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, …

The Mesta In New Spain, 1537-1600, Keith Algier Jan 1963

The Mesta In New Spain, 1537-1600, Keith Algier

History ETDs

One of man's most consistent patterns of behavior is the tendency to associate himself with other individuals who have common interests or needs. Some associations are formed to provide protection for the individual, others are organized for the purposes of worship, and still others take more frivolous forms. Many associations in our own society are designed to promote the economic self-interest of their numbers, and it is with an institution of this type that this study is concerned. The monarchs of medieval Castile organized and actively encouraged the development of an organization called the Mesta, a body which represented the …

Oberlin College And World War I, Todd Isao Endo Jan 1963

Oberlin College And World War I, Todd Isao Endo

Honors Papers

Now trying to recover a short part of the past life of Oberlin, I have relied heavily upon The Oberlin Review for factual data and insight into the atmosphere of the times. By spot-checking the other town newspapers, The Oberlin Tribune and The Oberlin News with The Review, I concluded that the review is a reasonably reliable source.

To help construct the skeletal chronology of events I turned two other periodicals besides The Review. These included the Annual Reports of the President and Treasurer, The Oberlin College Alumni Magazine, and The Oberlin College Bulletin. These contained such valuable information as …
