An Approach To The Concept Of Biblical Communication As The Core Of Christian Education, Eugene Floyd Kester May 1963

An Approach To The Concept Of Biblical Communication As The Core Of Christian Education, Eugene Floyd Kester

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

In the process of genuinely attempting to live and share the Good News of Jesus Christ with an "exploding" contemporary world, some people have become increasingly desperate to know how.

This necessity, they have discovered, is disturbing multitudes of sincere Christians in every walk of life. Many have found themselves turning from one "successful" method to another; while others have "faithfully" held to some favorite or "honored" procedure .

"Heart" (Kardia) In The Doctrine Of Soteriology, Clyde James Zehr May 1963

"Heart" (Kardia) In The Doctrine Of Soteriology, Clyde James Zehr

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The problem under consideration was an investigation of the doctrine of soteriology set forth by conservative evangelical theologians in the light of the New Testament usage of the term "heart" (kardia). The term "heart" (kardia) is a prominent word in the New Testament, especially in the areas referring specifically to sin and salvation from sin. Any doctrine of salvation from sin will, therefore, be greatly influenced and affected by the interpretation placed upon the New Testament writers' meaning of this word. Basically, the problem had three main areas of investigation: first, to determine the scriptural meaning of "heart" (kardia) in …

A Study Of The New Testament Basis For Christian Unity, Orlin Jackson May 1963

A Study Of The New Testament Basis For Christian Unity, Orlin Jackson

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

In contemporary Christianity there is an active potent force . The manifestation of this force is evidenced by various organizations and is known as the ecumenical movement. It is the objective of this movement to seek Christian unity and to make it visible to the world.

In spite of the vast amount of discussion, both past and present, concerning the subject, there is little agreement as to the nature of Christian unity. This has been shown in Chapter III of this paper. Therefore, it is the purpose of this study to discover what constitutes the nature of Christian unity, as …

An Examination Of The Definition Terms Used In The Biblical Doctrine Of The Atonement, Gary L. Minshull May 1963

An Examination Of The Definition Terms Used In The Biblical Doctrine Of The Atonement, Gary L. Minshull

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Evangelicals have always regarded the Bible as the ultimate source of doctrine as well as morale. This attitude applies, of course, to its teaching on the Atonement of Christ. This scriptural teaching on this subject is described by a number of definitive terms, the meaning of which is crucial to the formulation of a biblical doctrine of the Atonement. These terms, however, have never been studied in a comprehensive manner, and in no case has evidence been presented to show their meaning in relation to each other.

A Comparative Study Of The Conservative Evangelical View And The Seventh-Day Adventist View Of The Doctrine Of An Intermediate State, Ben O. Taylor May 1963

A Comparative Study Of The Conservative Evangelical View And The Seventh-Day Adventist View Of The Doctrine Of An Intermediate State, Ben O. Taylor

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Belief in an intermediate state has never been wholly absent from religious thought. One purpose of this investigation has been to examine data concerning an intermediate state, and what its nature is. By the expression, intermediate state, is meant the realm or condition in which the souls of men exist from the time of physical death to the resurrection of their bodies.

The Theology Of Frederick Henry Quitman As Illustrated Primarily By His Catechism And Hymbook, Waldemar Wehmeier May 1963

The Theology Of Frederick Henry Quitman As Illustrated Primarily By His Catechism And Hymbook, Waldemar Wehmeier

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This research, therefore, was motivated by a desire to know more about the man who stood as a “Saul among the host of Israel" determining the course of the New York Ministerium for twenty-one years, given an honorary S.T.D. by Harvard University, so revered by his congregation that when he could no longer walk he was carried into the pulpit to a chair, and yet summarily dismissed by many as a rationalist and a socinian.

Developing A Ministry On Mission Fields In The Light Of The New Testament Concepts Of Church And Ministry, Maynard Dorow May 1963

Developing A Ministry On Mission Fields In The Light Of The New Testament Concepts Of Church And Ministry, Maynard Dorow

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This study concerns the ministry of the church. To phrase the question in this way already demonstrates that ministry cannot be understood by itself but that it is to be studied in the context of the church. When we look at ministry in the New Testament we find that it is always involved with serving the purposes of the church. In this chapter, therefore, we will set forth in brief outline the concept of the church as presented in the New Testament in order that our study of ministry might be seen in proper perspective.

The Messiah In Exilic And Postexilic Eschatological Prophecy, Werner Wadewitz May 1963

The Messiah In Exilic And Postexilic Eschatological Prophecy, Werner Wadewitz

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

We hope to have to have shown on the basis or the Messianic elements in these exilic and postexilic eschatological prophecies, that by the time the last books of the Old Testament canon were being written and added--of which these were the last prophetic books--the picture of the Messiah was such as God wanted to reveal in the time of "shadows," till the "body” would come. If the portrait of the Messianic Priest-King is not as clear nor complete as we would like to see it, perhaps the thinking behind this was that for this reason people would become more …

The Ministry During The Period From Saint Clement Of Rome To Saint Cyprian Of Carthage, James Fackler May 1963

The Ministry During The Period From Saint Clement Of Rome To Saint Cyprian Of Carthage, James Fackler

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

It is the intention of this writer to present a systematic consideration or the concept or the ministry from documents or the Christian Church outside the New Testament to the middle or the third century. To do this it will be necessary to take into consideration the historical development of thought through the period. History, or tradition, will present vignettes with which this writer intends to give you, the reader, a concept of the ministry from St. Clement or Rome to St. Cyprian of Carthage.

A Study Of Epistemology In The Theologies Of Emil Brunner, Martin Heinecken, Taito Kantonen, And Joseph Sittler, John Heinemeier

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Chapter I of the paper will deal with Brunner and Chapter II with Heinecken, Kantonen and Sittler in comparison to Brunner. The concluding section will summarize Brunner’s position, evaluate the comparison made between his position and that of the three Lutherans, and raise several questions for further investigation in this field.

Factors Related To The Life And Growth Of Adult Bible Classes In The Lutheran Church, Paul Pallmeyer May 1963

Factors Related To The Life And Growth Of Adult Bible Classes In The Lutheran Church, Paul Pallmeyer

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

A serious concern of many Protestant churches today is their failure to enlist a large proportion of their adult members in group Bible study. One such church body is The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod. As will presently be shown, this denomination has vigorously promoted adult Bible study over the last decade and a half, but there remains a continued resistance by the adult membership to participation in Bible classes.

The present project was designed.to uncover some factors which show a relationship to this resistance to group Bible study by members of The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod. A series of interviews with Bible …

Some Proposed Criteria For An Examination Of Adult Pre-Membership Instruction, Michael Keyne May 1963

Some Proposed Criteria For An Examination Of Adult Pre-Membership Instruction, Michael Keyne

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This thesis is primarily concerned with the criteria for the structuring of adult pre-membership instruction, in the light of its unique position within the field of Christian education. The broad area of Christian education has the problem of teaching individuals who exhibit relative degrees of faith and knowledge. Functionally, most of Christian education is based upon the assumption that a common denominator of faith is present, no matter how minimal it may be. Since adult pre-membership instruction can make no such assumption, it follows that the whole philosophy of Christian education must be re-examined in the light of pre-membership instruction.

Duns Scotus: His Relation To The Augustinian Tradition Of Knowledge, Stephen Scott May 1963

Duns Scotus: His Relation To The Augustinian Tradition Of Knowledge, Stephen Scott

Bachelors’ Theses

To ask a question is as much a matter of method as to give an answer, and if it is true that we must know a question before we can answer, it is also true that we must know some¬ thing of the answer before we can pose a question. So it was quite correct for Descartes to insist that a question ”be wholly determinate, so that we shall have nothing more to seek for than what can be inferred from the data.

The Philebus Of Plato, Roy J. Josten May 1963

The Philebus Of Plato, Roy J. Josten

Bachelors’ Theses

This thesis intends to make a thorough study of the dialogue Philebus. The manner in which this is done is as follows: First of all, certain preliminary matters are discussed in this Introduction, including the relationship of the doctrine of pleasure in the Philebus to that doctrine in some of the other dialogues, in an attempt to arrive at a synthetic statement of Plato's theory of pleasure. In the second chapter, the progression of the argument of the Philebus is analyzed, while in the third, a commentary is provided on the more important sections of the dialogue.

The Suffering Love Of God: The Tension Between Judgement And Grace In The Pre-Exilic Prophets, Theodore Ludwig May 1963

The Suffering Love Of God: The Tension Between Judgement And Grace In The Pre-Exilic Prophets, Theodore Ludwig

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

It is therefore the purpose of this study to defend the thesis that the juxtaposition of the message of total judgment and that of full grace has a theological basis. There is a great tension between judgment and grace; yet these two seemingly opposed items have a deep unity in the nature of Yahweh. Therefore the ultimate purpose of this study is to determine the prophetic understanding of the nature of Yahweh. The conclusion reached and supported throughout is that it is the suffering love of Yahweh which forms the basis of the message of both judgment and grace which …

The Doctrine Of Infant Baptism In The German Protestant Theology Of The Nineteenth Century, David Scaer May 1963

The Doctrine Of Infant Baptism In The German Protestant Theology Of The Nineteenth Century, David Scaer

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

This work is not written primarily to give answer to the difficulties which might arise in connection with infant baptism. This it might, do incidentally and this is certainly the author's wish. What is endeavored here is to analyze the doctrine or infant baptism as it appeared in the nineteenth century in Germany, the land of Luther. In so far as we are dealing with a limited period of time within certain defined geographical limits, our work is historically orientated. But in far as the various teachings on infant baptism are analyzed, this task belongs to that of systematic theology. …

Vasco De Quiroga And His Pueblo-Hospitals Of Santa Fe, Fintan Benedict Warren O. F. M.

History ETDs

Vasco de Quiroga, one of the truly great figures sent from Spain to New Spain in the sixteenth century, stands out for his contributions to the political ecclesiastical, and social development of Mexico. He was sent to the New World by the Spanish crown as a member of the Second Audienoia of Mexico in an effort to straighten out the confusion and turmoil which had resulted from ten years of struggling factionalism in the young colony and from the disastrous regime of Nuflo de Guzman and his companies of the First Audienoia.

The Aspect Of Freedom In Paul's Theology, M. Eugene Boring Apr 1963

The Aspect Of Freedom In Paul's Theology, M. Eugene Boring

Graduate Thesis Collection

The study of the New Testament properly begins with Paul, since the earliest documents of the New Testament are from his hand. In this, my first serious attempt to make a study of one aspect of the theology of the New Testament, I have thus chosen to begin with Paul. I have tried to choose a topic which would allow me to study Paul's theology as a whole, but which would permit me to approach it from a viewpoint not already overused.

The Relationship Of Certain Terms To The Doctrine Of Original Sin, Robert L. Smith Apr 1963

The Relationship Of Certain Terms To The Doctrine Of Original Sin, Robert L. Smith

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Mathematicians state that for one to comprehend the Einstein theory of relativity a good knowledge of mathematics and mathematical symbols is necessary. It is impossible to put into words many of the thought and concepts expressed, but Einstein communicated through the use of certain symbols and formulas. When a student in any field begins his study he is soon aware that the amount of mastery he will gain in the area will depend upon his grasp and comprehension of the terminology peculiar to that field of study. It must be discovered what certain terms and thought patterns mean to those …

Steamship Fire Safety For American Vessels From 1904 To 1925, Edward Francis Heite Apr 1963

Steamship Fire Safety For American Vessels From 1904 To 1925, Edward Francis Heite

Master's Theses

This study encompasses a period which was probably 'the most significant in American steamship history -- from the hurtling of the GENERAL SLOCUM (1904) to 1925. It is not unusual for a major disaster to touch off a broad investigation into problems not necessarily directly related to the disaster itself. Thus, such studies provide data of interest in a general study; this is why the present paper deals so heavily in events while stressing trends. Because of the range of some of these investigation reports, a problem presents itself as to the proper scope a paper on "fire safety" should …

Quartermaster Airborne Instruction : A History Of The Airborne Courses Of Instruction At The U.S. Army Quartermaster School, Fort Lee, Virginia, From Their Establishment In 1950 To The End Of The Korean War, Thomas Audrey Johnson

Master's Theses

Since the beginning of time, man has looked to the skies for new ideas, but the first recorded recognition of the value of using air borne troops belongs to an American. The wily Benjamin Franklin wrote in 1784, after observing the Montgolfer brothers balloon, ''Where is the Prince who can afford to cover his country with troops for its defense as that ten thousand men descending from the clouds might not in many places do an infinite deal of mischief before a force could be brought together to repel them?" The advent of a practical airplane produced a flurry of …
