Smallpox Inoculation Controversy In Norfolk: 1768-1776, Eileen M. Joganic
Smallpox Inoculation Controversy In Norfolk: 1768-1776, Eileen M. Joganic
History ETDs
The story of the small pox inoculation controversy in Norfolk could best be told if considered in the context of the times. It was therefore necessary to examine the prevailing medical theories in the eighteenth century, the progress of inoculation in America after its introduction in 1721, and the social, political, and economic conditions of Virginia in the decade that the controversy ensued. Only after this background was established was it possible to understand fully the reaction of certain Norfolkians against inoculation, and the reasons why this reaction occurred.
Gabriela Mistral And The Standards Of American Criticism, Mary Frances Baker Hernández
Gabriela Mistral And The Standards Of American Criticism, Mary Frances Baker Hernández
English Language and Literature ETDs
The purpose of this investigation of the work of Gabriela Mistral as seen by her American critics, and of the critics as they are revealed by their standards, has been to offer some insight into the problem of critical biases--an area which has become a burgeoning field of interest in the United States of the mid-twentieth century. In order to dramatize the similarities and disparities of critical viewpoint, the area of South American literature, as little known to North American readers and writers as is any literature in the Western tradition, was chosen, and from it, the production of a …
Religious And Liberal Thoughts In Eça And Galdos, Nasario Garcia
Religious And Liberal Thoughts In Eça And Galdos, Nasario Garcia
Spanish and Portuguese ETDs
The purpose of this study, then, is to show how two authors, Benito Pérez Galdós of Spain and Eçadde Queiroz of Portugal, contributed to the liberal movement by expressing their ideas against the church dogma and tradition. It must be emphasized, however that never did Eça or Galdós attack the Church outright, but rather its practices. These were the authors' ways of expressing disapproval of certain religious practices of some of its narrow minded members. Moreover, we are not only interested in how these two writers handled what to them were religious problems, but also in the similar manner in …
Civil-Military Relations In Chile, 1891-1938, Frederick Mckinley Nunn
Civil-Military Relations In Chile, 1891-1938, Frederick Mckinley Nunn
American Studies ETDs
Chilean civil-military relations between 1891 and 1938 have been discussed in varying degrees by many authors in many works. Nowhere, however, is there a complete treatment available which incorporates adequate background material and adequate coverage of all events during the period in question to explain the peculiar Chilean situation. It is hoped that this study, perhaps lacking in many respects, will contribute towards a proper understanding of this problem.
The Family Worship Hour, Herman A. Etzold
The Family Worship Hour, Herman A. Etzold
Bachelor of Divinity
The purpose of this paper is to tell the story of The Family Worship Hour, to urge more widespread publicity of this project in The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, and to evaluate the program in the light of contemporary theological thinking on the subject of the Church's use of the mass communications media for the propagation of the Christian faith.
Quinque Viave: The Five Ways Of St Thomas Aquinas, Robert Ridall
Quinque Viave: The Five Ways Of St Thomas Aquinas, Robert Ridall
Doctor of Theology Dissertation
Many of the ancient Stoics never experienced any serious problem concerning the existence of God because they tended to be pantheistic. The orthodox Stoic could put his hand anywhere in the universe and affirm with confidence, "Here is god.” Plato’s “highest good” and Aristotle’s “unmoved mover” are actually monotheistic proofs. Both of these men accepted the traditional gods of Greece but they were searching for a metaphysical ultimate to account for all reality. However when one encounters St. Thomas in the thirteenth century he discovers that these metaphysical ultimates of the ancients resemble the Christian God. St. Thomas calmly presents …
Eça De Queiroz: Chronicler And Critic Of His Times, Fredrick M. Nunn
Eça De Queiroz: Chronicler And Critic Of His Times, Fredrick M. Nunn
Spanish and Portuguese ETDs
The object of this study is to present the social and political commentaries of the Portuguese author, Eça de Queiroz. While it may be evident to the reader of Eça’s novels that his fiction has ample political and social content, another source exists from which a wider range of commentaries can be drawn. This source is the multitude of letters, chronicles, and essays that Eça wrote, both in Portugal and during his career as a diplomat in America and Europe. Through an examination of these works, it becomes clear that the author was a man who has more than just …

Pieper's Principium In Its Historical-Theological Setting, David Meyer
Pieper's Principium In Its Historical-Theological Setting, David Meyer
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
My purpose is not merely to seek a critical and objective analysis of Pieper’s understanding of Scripture as the present-day principium theologiae, but my purpose is to reproduce Pieper’s theology of the principium against the backdrop of his theological world as he saw it.
The Cosmological Proof For The Existence Of God In Post-Reformation Theology, Otto Stahlke
The Cosmological Proof For The Existence Of God In Post-Reformation Theology, Otto Stahlke
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
It ls the aim of this study to inquire whether the Post-Reformation theologians were aware of the difficulty which the cosmological proof has encountered in later thought, and, if so, how they responded to this difficulty.
Matthew 23: The Comprehensive Polemic Of Jesus Christ, Ray Martens
Matthew 23: The Comprehensive Polemic Of Jesus Christ, Ray Martens
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
There is no lack of material that illustrates Jesus’ positive teaching on the nature of the kingdom He is establishing, of His role in God’s plan, of the relation of man to God, of the role of God’s children among men, of the function of the law, of the nature of discipleship, and many more specific areas. There is furthermore a significant amount of material which His own teaching. And discredits those who would oppose Him. It is such an extended statement of the Teacher, a statement of attack and criticism recorded by Matthew, that is the subject of this …
Was Martha's Confession In John 11:27 Used In The Early Church As A Creed, Robert Holst
Was Martha's Confession In John 11:27 Used In The Early Church As A Creed, Robert Holst
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The aim of this thesis is to determine whether John 11:27 reflects an early Christian creed or, as an exclamation from Martha, served in the early Church as a creed. In his otherwise excellent chapter “Creedal Elements in the New Testament” in Early Christian Creeds, J. N. D. Kelly does not list John 11:27 as “evidence in the New Testament to show that the faith was already beginning to harden into conventional summaries. This seems an unfortunate omission since Martha’s confession contains not only one of two, but three Christological affirmations joined together asyndetically.

Hopkins The Critic: The Literary Judgement And Taste Of Gerard Manley Hopkins, With An Appendix On His Verse Theory, Myron Ochshorn
Hopkins The Critic: The Literary Judgement And Taste Of Gerard Manley Hopkins, With An Appendix On His Verse Theory, Myron Ochshorn
English Language and Literature ETDs
The purpose of this book is to bring together Gerard Manley Hopkins' literary criticism. At present his critical remarks are scattered at random throughout four volumes, the large volume containing his journals and papers, and the three volumes of his letters to Bridges, to Dixon, and to Patmore, Baillie, and others. These books of course contain much that has nothing to do with criticism, so that the reader interested particularly in his literary judgement and taste must undergo constant interruption and distraction. It has long been felt that a single volume would be desirable which separated out and arranged his …
United We Serve Relief Efforts Of The Women Of New York City During The Civil War, Phyllis Korzilius
United We Serve Relief Efforts Of The Women Of New York City During The Civil War, Phyllis Korzilius
Masters Theses
Preface
In high school and college most of my study in the Civil War period centered in the great battles, generals, political figures, and national events that marked the American scene between 1861 and 1865. Because the courses were of a broad survey type, it would have been presumptuous to expect any special attention to such issues as the role of women in the war. However, a probe of the more common or personal aspects of the "era of conflict" provides a deeper insight of the era as well as more knowledge. For this reason I have examined the work …
British Trade In West Florida, 1763-1783, John Dewey Born Jr.
British Trade In West Florida, 1763-1783, John Dewey Born Jr.
History ETDs
Under the terms of the Treaty of Paris in 1763 the territorial holdings of Great Britain were increased in several areas of North America; among them was the province of West Florida. It was, however, shortly after what Lawrence Henry Gipson chooses to call "The Great War for the Empire" that the English colonials in the eastern section of North America began to agitate against what they considered to be repressive British economic measures. The familiar story of these events which led to the American Revolution has been written with varying interpretations by scholarly historians. These narratives, almost without exception, …
A Comparative Study Of Two Methods Of Teaching Art At The Fourth Grade Level, Mary Carroll Nelson
A Comparative Study Of Two Methods Of Teaching Art At The Fourth Grade Level, Mary Carroll Nelson
Art & Art History ETDs
It was the purpose of this study to compare the effects of visual, technical instructions on the creativity and technical mastery demonstrated in the art work of a fourth grade class. The experimental group received verbal stimulation and verbal instructions plus visual instructions of technical nature. The control group received the same verbal stimulation and verbal instructions without the visual instructions. The art products from both classes were submitted to a panel of judges for a rating on, (1) whether there were observable differences between the groups in creativity and technical mastery, and (2) if there were, which group excelled …
Le Rôle De L'Individu Dans Le Roman Fran̨Cais Du Vingtième Siècle, Anne Marguerite Quirion
Le Rôle De L'Individu Dans Le Roman Fran̨Cais Du Vingtième Siècle, Anne Marguerite Quirion
Senior Scholar Papers
The Glory And Glorification Of Jesus Christ In The Gospel Of John, Arthur Strege
The Glory And Glorification Of Jesus Christ In The Gospel Of John, Arthur Strege
Doctor of Theology Dissertation
John’s Gospel emphasizes the glory manifested in the entire earthly life of the Lord, as well as in His going to the Father. This particular feature in the Gospel oi John is the subject of this dissertation.
Fundamentalism And The Missouri Synod, Milton Rudnick
Fundamentalism And The Missouri Synod, Milton Rudnick
Doctor of Theology Dissertation
The conclusion of this study is that Fundamentalism and the Missouri Synod were not related closely enough for either to exert major influence upon the other. Basic factors in the background of each group kept them at a distance from one another, and, while their paths were often parallel, they never actually converged. The relationship was, for the most part, cordial, but never intimate, with the result that there was no important interchange of ideas and attitudes. It is for this reason that the word "in" had to become "and"--"Fundamentalism and the Missouri Synod,” signifying the revised view of at …
A Comparative Study Of The Conservative Evangelical View And The Seventh-Day Adventist View Of The Doctrine Of An Intermediate State, Ben O. Taylor
A Comparative Study Of The Conservative Evangelical View And The Seventh-Day Adventist View Of The Doctrine Of An Intermediate State, Ben O. Taylor
Western Evangelical Seminary Theses
The purpose of the study at hand has been twofold: 1) to examine the doctrine of the intermediate state as it is held by Conservative Evangelicals, and 2) by means of comparison and contrast, to exhibit the ways in which the Seventh-Day Adventist position agrees with or differs from the Conservative Evangelical position.
Church Architectural Planning For Evangelical Christian Education, Paul Bullman
Church Architectural Planning For Evangelical Christian Education, Paul Bullman
Western Evangelical Seminary Theses
The church and Christian education are very closely related. The New Testament teaches that the church is the body of Christ. This body is composed of human beings whose lips, hands, and feet are dedicated, by the leading of the Holy Spirit, to the revealing of Christ to the world.l It is the evangelical position that points up the fact that all men are depraved, or incapable of saving themselves. Salvation can only come from the divine miracle of regeneration.
For all "Who hold to this evangelical standard of salvation by regeneration, the true aim of Christian education is two …
The Development Of The Itinerant Ministries In The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod 1847-1865, Karl Wyneken
The Development Of The Itinerant Ministries In The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod 1847-1865, Karl Wyneken
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
This study is concerned with the effect the pressure to meet this need had on the traditional forms of ministry prevalent among Lutherans and the doctrinal ramifications and implications of forms adopted to meet these needs. In a general way, the problem of the itinerant ministries employed by the Missouri Synod may be expressed as a tension between stability on the one hand and mobility, or perhaps flexibility and adaptability, on the other. The stability was the traditional doctrine and church practice the German Lutheran immigrants had inherited and brought with them from the old country. The mobility was that …
The Old Testament Locus De Novissimis In Contemporary Lutheran Theological Thought, Howard Tepker
The Old Testament Locus De Novissimis In Contemporary Lutheran Theological Thought, Howard Tepker
Doctor of Theology Dissertation
It is the purpose of this dissertation to present in an objective manner the various views held by leading Lutheran theologians and scholars who have written on phases of the Old Testament locus De Novissimis during the past two decades, or whose works have been republished in this period of time. This writer is aware of the mass of research that would be required if one were to undertake to offer a critical analysis of present-day scholarly thought. He will therefore assume the more modest task of presenting what might be called a composite picture of trends in contemporary Lutheran …
A Study Of The New Testament Basis For Christian Unity, Orlin Jackson
A Study Of The New Testament Basis For Christian Unity, Orlin Jackson
Western Evangelical Seminary Theses
In contemporary Christianity there is an active potent force. The manifestation of this force is evidenced by various organizations and is known as the ecumenical movement. It is the objective of this movement to seek Christian unity and to make it visible to the world.
In spite of the vast amount of discussion, both past and present, concerning the subject, there is little agreement as to the nature of Christian uni t y. This has been shown in Chapter III of this paper. Therefore, it is the purpose of this study to discover what constitutes the nature of Christian unity, …
