The Court Of Star Chamber Under Henry Vii And Henry Viii, Marvin M. Lomax Jan 1964

The Court Of Star Chamber Under Henry Vii And Henry Viii, Marvin M. Lomax

History ETDs

The reader of the standard history texts is left with the impression that the Court of Star Chamber was established by Henry VII essentially out of nowhere to bring order out of chaos and to help secure his rather shaky throne. Once it had succeeded in slapping the wrists of the turbulent nobility the court is depicted as having gradually turned to the exaltation of the royal powers, through becoming a prerogative court, until it was altered by the Stuarts into an instrument of real tyranny. The Court appears as a tribunal which served only to cut off the ears, …

Three years after the death of Stalin, Khrushchev presented before the Twentieth Party Congress of the Soviet Union, a secret speech, condemning Stalin and the development of the cult of the individual around him. In so doing, he promised to return to the Marxist-Leninist principles and to collective leadership. I shall try, in this paper, to summarize the various changes that have occurred within the years succeeding the speech. Saint Sebastian Attended By Irene: An Iconographic Study, Carolyn Kinder Carr Jan 1964

Saint Sebastian Attended By Irene: An Iconographic Study, Carolyn Kinder Carr

Honors Papers

The artists of the Baroque, rejecting the traditional conception of Sebastian, portray the formerly invincible saint as wounded, suffering, no longer victoriously partaking of the fruits of his glorious martyrdom, but being found and cared for by Irene, the widow of the Christian martyr Castulus.

Such a change in iconography involves both a shift of the outward and visible as well as the intrinsic content of the pictorial matter. the significance of this thematic revolution has often been overlooked because it parallels the stylistic developments of the age, which, until recently, have captured more fully the imagination of art historians. …

The Doctrine Of The Ministry Among The Disciples Of Christ, Arthur H. Bishop Jan 1964

The Doctrine Of The Ministry Among The Disciples Of Christ, Arthur H. Bishop

Graduate Thesis Collection

The purpose of this paper is to attempt to remove some of the vagueness associated with the ministry of the Disciples and to add some depth to their theory of the ministry through some proposals for renewal and reformation. First, I propose to accomplish this purpose through an historical survey of the development of the ministry among Disciples. Then, some recommendations will be offered in the light of the Biblical ministry, the historical ministry of the Church, and the contemporary situation. It is my opinion that the Church and its ministry must be renewed constantly through continuing reformations. In order …

Specifically, this was basically an attempt to obtain an available sample of both delinquent and non-delinquent American-Chinese youth for the purpose of identifying some of the …

An Introductory Study Pertaining To The Evaluation Of Anglo-Saxon Lyric Poetry, Anne Wonders Passel Jan 1964

An Introductory Study Pertaining To The Evaluation Of Anglo-Saxon Lyric Poetry, Anne Wonders Passel

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The same age which produced the great epic, Beowulf, also produced some of the most beautiful, most lyrical, poetry ever written. Scholars who first looked into The Exeter Book Boomed to have been less impressed by this subjective, elegiac poetry than they were by the monumental epic which had already been acclaimed as one of the greatest literary accomplishments of our ancestors. The interest in the lyrics has grown slowly through the years since 1831, when the first transcript vas made of this eleventh century manuscript.

A Study Of Boy Scout And Aaronic Priesthood Activity (Boys Age Twelve To Fourteen) In Selected Lds Wards, Orval Leonard Nelson

Theses and Dissertations

This study had two main purposes. Its first is to test the theoretical proposition that there is a carry-over into other systems of behavior as a result of group cohesion. For example, as scouting activities increased, Aaronic Priesthood activities increased. And according to the reference group theory, individuals join reference groups to fulfill certain needs, wants, goals, etc. In an active Boy Scout program many of these needs, wants, and goals are satisfied as the boys participate in the activities outlined by the Boy Scouts of America. Furthermore, once these needs are satisfied, change toward conformity tends to carry over …

George Romney And The Michigan Gubernatorial Compaign - 1962, Richard C. Fuller

Theses and Dissertations

Politics in Michigan had been on a low plane for a number of years. The troubles were many and their roots could be found deep in the structure of the state's government.

In April of 1959, the sagging governmental structure gave way to the extent that the state was unable to meet its payroll. The result was the much publicized "Payless Pay Day" which attracted national and international interest.

Seeing that their elected officials were seemingly powerless to correct even the basic flaws in Michigan's government, many of the state's leading business and industrial leaders decided to apply their considerable …

Sacrificial Worship In Ancient Israel And Its Fulfillment In Jesus Christ, Samuel Richard Baglien

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

During recent years, there has been a renewed interest in the study of the historical and religious values of the Old Testament. Christians everywhere seem to have become obsessed with an inherent thirst for a better understanding of this great book and the faith it teaches. This renewed desire to probe into the rich background of Semitic culture that is the very historical foundation of Christianity seems to have been brought about by two distinct and quite general conditions.

The first and most obvious condition is the age in which we are living--the age of science. Today, this age is …

Rose Macaulay: Satirist, Suzanne F. Carey Jan 1964

Rose Macaulay: Satirist, Suzanne F. Carey

Graduate Thesis Collection

Dame Rose Macaulay possessed two qualities, a comic spirit and an intellectual pessimism, which made her one of England's finest modern satirists. Her satire has limitations. First, because of rapid and rather prolific productivity, some of the satire is repetitious. Second, the reader who enjoys satire is already aware of many of the flaws and incongruities of society. He has probably ridiculed them himself, so he may not find the satire as fresh and original as the author hoped it would be. Much of Miss Macaulay's satire is delightful and keen but occasionally she stoops to the trivial. In spite …
