The Historical Transformation Of Society In The Writings Of Karl Marx, William T. O'Hare Jan 1969

The Historical Transformation Of Society In The Writings Of Karl Marx, William T. O'Hare

Master's Essays (1922 - )

It is the contention of many who are well acquainted with the works of Karl Marx that he was first and foremost a philosopher, a man interested in the condition of other men and devoted to promoting those changes that would both improve and perfect this condition. I share the belief that the real Marx is a philosopher, a socially oriented humanist, who saw the task of philosophy as "social criticism," and who attempted to employ social criticism in order that all men might know not only what they had been and are now, but also what they might possibly …

The War Aims Of The Russian Provisional Government, Susan Parker Jan 1969

The War Aims Of The Russian Provisional Government, Susan Parker

Honors Theses

The outbreak of the first World War marked the end of an era in the history of Euroe; nowhere was this to be more true than in Russia. At th eoutset there was a great show of popular support for the war, much more so than for the Russo-Japanese War in 1904. Anti-government and revolutionary activity had soon revived following the temporary hiatus after the seemingly successful Revolution of 1905, but it disappeared almost entirely in the rise of national feeling and loyalty that accompanied the declaration of war on August 1, 1914.

Dick Gregory, John Johnson Jan 1969

Dick Gregory, John Johnson

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The leaders of the Black movement in the United States generally seem to be skilled rhetoricians. These leaders seem to emulate the same oharaoteristics in the use of rhetoric as did the statesmen who engineered the American Revolution. One notable exception seems to be a young Black named Dick Gregory. He seems to have found a means of persuasion that is far removed from his colleagues. His weapon is wit, and combined with dedication and honesty it helps make his rhetoric one of the most persuasive and unusual of the Black spokesmen.

George Romney In 1968, From Front-Runner To Drop-Out, An Analysis Of Cause, Richard M. Eyre Jan 1969

George Romney In 1968, From Front-Runner To Drop-Out, An Analysis Of Cause, Richard M. Eyre

Theses and Dissertations

The meteoric political decline of George Romney is unparalleled in political history and in the history of presidential campaigning. In the space of one year, the man evolved from the overwhelming presidential favorite of Republicans, Democrats, and Independents alike to a presidential drop out, criticized severely and even mocked by press and public alike.

There are many opinions as to why this phenomenon occurred. The press has opinions, the public has opinions, and the people closest to George Romney have opinions.

A step by step analysis of Romney's campaign casts light on these opinions and completely discredits some while validating …

The Development Of The Juvenile Instructor Under George Q. Cannon And Its Functions In Latter-Day Saint Religious Education, Lawrence R. Flake Jan 1969

The Development Of The Juvenile Instructor Under George Q. Cannon And Its Functions In Latter-Day Saint Religious Education, Lawrence R. Flake

Theses and Dissertations

The success of the Juvenile Instructor magazine, called the Instructor since 1929, owes much to the vision and foresight of its great founder, George Quale Cannon. From a small, crude, four-page paper, first published in 1866, the Juvenile Instructor has developed into a far-reaching and attractive publication, touching the lives of countless thousands in 1969. It has proved to be a great implement of religious education to the Latter-day Saint people and fulfilled four important functions in its early years when Elder Cannon was its editor. It served as the official organ of the Sunday Schools, as a voice of …

The Theology Of Thomas Dick And Its Possible Relationship To That Of Joseph Smith, Edward T. Jones

Theses and Dissertations

In her attempt to find a strictly human origin for certain doctrines contained in the Book of Abraham, and the later teachings of Joseph Smith, Mrs. Fawn M. Brodie relies upon the writings of one Thomas Dick. Dick was a nineteenth century Scottish scientist-theologian who wrote several volumes on religious and scientific subjects. It is known that at least two volumes were known to at least some of the early Latter-day Saints, for passages from them were quoted in the Messenger and Advocate. The purpose of this thesis has been to research the entire ten volumes of Dick's writings …

The Rational In The Leibnizian Universe, Eugene M. Underwood Jan 1969

The Rational In The Leibnizian Universe, Eugene M. Underwood

Master's Essays (1922 - )

The Monadology presents a hierarchy of monads varying in quality one from another. Certain of these monads are soul monads, which are dominant monads of men, either as souls or minds. This paper proposes to investigate the Rational Universe with emphasis on man as dominated by soul monad in the philosophy of Leibniz. In the Monadology Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz set down a concise statement of his metaphysical system, which was then and is now complete and consistent with his other writings to a higher degree than found in most philosophers. Using this strength of Libniz's thought, we are justified in …

The Significance Of Nicholas Jenkins In Anthony Powell's A Dance To The Music Of Time, Michael George Gaspeny Jan 1969

The Significance Of Nicholas Jenkins In Anthony Powell's A Dance To The Music Of Time, Michael George Gaspeny

Master's Theses

During a time in which scholarly examinations of novels both major and minor abound, it seems remarkable that such an intricate and ambitious series as Anthony Powell' s Dance to the Music of Time has not generated more extensive and thorough critical attention. Resulting in part from the singularity of Powell' s art, this neglect can be attributed primarily to the nature of the series itself. Thus, as Anthony Burgess has pointed out, Powell has undertaken the writing of a roman fleuve. In such a work, of course, the novels are basically uniform in style, structure, and theme, and are …

Evan Harrington : George Meredith's Use Of Comedy As A Corrective To Sentimentality, Joyce Stanley Scott Jan 1969

Evan Harrington : George Meredith's Use Of Comedy As A Corrective To Sentimentality, Joyce Stanley Scott

Master's Theses

Because it leads an individual to increasing loss of perspective, George Meredith considered sentimentality a real tragedy. The deluded sentimentalist convinces himself that all his efforts and attitudes bear him steadily down the road of spiritual progress, when actually he is using his ideals of society as an excuse for willful blindness, a shifting of responsibility, and self-deception. The sentimentalist's primary concern is to cushion himself against hard fact instead of training himself for encountering it, and he accomplishes this by drugging himself against the perception of truth.

Ernest Hemingway's Impressionistic Style., Larry Cole Thompson Jan 1969

Ernest Hemingway's Impressionistic Style., Larry Cole Thompson

Master's Theses

This thesis is in one sense an attempt to explain to what extent, if any, the fluctuations in critical and popular evaluation throughout, and even after, Hemingway's lengthy career are due to his impressionistic style. The purpose and method of this thesis is therefore twofold:

  1. To arrive at a workable definition of Impressionism, and, using this definition, to delineate those portions of Hemingway's work which are written in this manner.
  2. To determine if Impressionism may be used as a critical gauge in assessing Hemingway's fictional works and perhaps explain the aforementioned fluctuations in his work.

Les Trois Iles De Marivaux, Suzanne Prillaman Wiltshire Jan 1969

Les Trois Iles De Marivaux, Suzanne Prillaman Wiltshire

Master's Theses
