The Silversmiths Of Old Detroit, Walter E. Simmons Ii Jan 1969

The Silversmiths Of Old Detroit, Walter E. Simmons Ii

Wayne State University Theses

The history of the decorative arts in the United States has been related by many authors, but has always been concerned almost entirely with objects produced in the Eastern portion of the country. In areas such as Detroit that were not directly connected with the seventeenth and eighteenth-century settlements on the East Coast, little basic research has been accomplished. It will be the purpose of this writer to discuss one area of the decorative arts, silver, in depth, with the hope that the reader already cognizant in the field in the Eastern United States may be made aware of the …

Southern Minnesota Reaction To Policies Of Nazi Germany, 1936-1939, Frederick Karl Knudsen Jan 1969

Southern Minnesota Reaction To Policies Of Nazi Germany, 1936-1939, Frederick Karl Knudsen

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Before World War II broke out in Europe in September, 1939, Nazi Germany had acted aggressively for several years in pursuing its objective of world domination. First of all, Germany remilitarized the Rhineland, which was a part of the overall rearmament program. Secondly, Adolf Hitler turned his attention to the unification of all German-speaking people, those in Austria and the Sudeten Germans in parts of Czechoslovakia. Involved in the latter problem was the infamous Munich Conference, where the word "appeasement" became a term associated with treason.

Hitler then launched his third step to world domination, Drang Nach Osten, with the …

Brighton Rock: Growth In Psychological Insight, Sister Catherine Madigan Dc Jan 1969

Brighton Rock: Growth In Psychological Insight, Sister Catherine Madigan Dc

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis, presented at Xavier University in 1969, examines Graham Greene's novel "Brighton Rock" as a significant early step in Greene's development of psychologically complex characterization. Madigan argues that the novel represents the first sustained combination of three elements in Greene's fiction: the "thriller" plot structure, the "Catholic element" as a framework of belief opposing his characters' actions, and genuine psychological depth, distinguishing it from both his earlier thrillers and his lighter "entertainments."

The thesis compares "Brighton Rock" to Greene's short story "A Drive in the Country," which shares a similar plot but, due to its brevity and narrative point …

The French Organ And Organ Music Of The Late Seventeenth Century, And The Registration Practices Relating Them To Each Other, Bruce Borden Stevens Jan 1969

The French Organ And Organ Music Of The Late Seventeenth Century, And The Registration Practices Relating Them To Each Other, Bruce Borden Stevens

Honors Theses

An understanding of the great body of French organ music written in the second half of the seventeenth century requires an acquaintance both with the organs for which the compositions were written and with the registration practices current at the time. Standardization extended into the area of registration, for the organ composers gave numerous registration directions that reveal remarkable uniformity. This was a development not found in the equivalent, contemporary practice of other countries. It was made possible in France by the considerable stylistic similarities among the organ compositions of all the composers.

The Court Of Star Chamber, Susan Agee Jan 1969

The Court Of Star Chamber, Susan Agee

Honors Theses

The Court of star Chamber in the last decade of the reign of Elizabeth had great prominence in the life of Tudor England. It was an efficient model or a typical Tudor institution, yet its uniqueness was recognized as early as the 1570's by Sir Thomas Smith. In later years, it abused its power and became a symbol of Stuart tyranny, but, during this period, it was a necessary and a respected body. A distinction should be made between the Star Chamber and the Privy Council. Besides the slight difference in its membership, the star Chamber was an exclusively judicial …

Whitman's Concept Of Brotherhood : His Motivation In Advocating Brotherhood And The Prerequisites For Brotherhood, Frank M. Morgan Jan 1969

Whitman's Concept Of Brotherhood : His Motivation In Advocating Brotherhood And The Prerequisites For Brotherhood, Frank M. Morgan

Honors Theses

There is a cause and effect relationship between brotherhood and almost all other proposals of Whitman. The relation between brotherhood and Whitman's metaphysical beliefs or religion is mroe complicated than a cause and effect one, and deserves more space later. With the understanding that the cause and effect situation works two ways, brotherhood both acting upon and being affected by other elements of Whitman's great plan for mankind, I shall attempt in this paper to explore these relationships from the point of view that chooses for discussion those elements that are necessitites for or impedimetns to the institution of brotherhood.

The French And British Socialist Missions To Russia, 1917 : A Thesis, Thomas L. Powers Jan 1969

The French And British Socialist Missions To Russia, 1917 : A Thesis, Thomas L. Powers

Honors Theses

In 1917, several Allied countries sent Socialist representatives to Russia to try to convince the Russian Socialists to stay in the war. I have concentrated on the British and French missions because they, as representatives of the two largest of the Allied countries, contacted more people and groups, were more deeply involved in the situation in Russia, and made themselves more conspicuous than did the others. The other missions (principally the Belgian and Italian) did very little the British and French did not do and had few characteristics which the British and French did not share.

The American's also sent …

The Influence Of The Early English Baptists On The Development Of The Concept Of Religious Liberty, Rebecca Saunders Jan 1969

The Influence Of The Early English Baptists On The Development Of The Concept Of Religious Liberty, Rebecca Saunders

Honors Theses

To interpret the possible impact of the Leveler movement and to understand the nature of this party of revolt, one must first know the character of its leaders, as well as the content and derivation of their ideals. Hence without the near martyrdom and popular image of John Lil- burne, the exactness and innuence in debating of John Wildman, the agi- tating leadership of Edward Sexby, the democratic zeal of Richard Over- ton, and the organization and clarifications of William Walwyn, the Leveller movementwould never have attained its form and influence.

John Donne : English Master Of Gongorism, Dorothy Gayle Hightower

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The title of this thesis, JOHN DONNE: ENGLISH MASTER OF GONGORISM, may seem perplexing to some, presumptuous to others. However, the purpose of this thesis will be to present evidence, through a textual study of the poetic style of both John Donne (1572-1631) and Don Luis de Göngora (1561-1627), which will verify the assumption that Donne was poetically influenced by Góngora.

A group of Utah citizens, supported by the Salt Lake Tribune, campaigned in May and June of 1968 to change Utah's liquor distribution system from a state-owned package method to one which would allow mixed drinks. Opponents of the change were supported by the Deseret News.

The two newspapers became the spokesmen for the two opposing groups. A careful analysis of them shows that of the 2,844.6 column inches of space in the Tribune, and of the 1,856.2 column inches in the News, exclusive of advertising, more than eight per cent in each newspaper supported the …

A Study Of The Definition Of The Gospel Of Jesus Christ And Its Theological Implications In Latter-Day Saint Literature, David Earl Perry

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis attempts to treat four problems: What is the gospel, as defined in Latter-day Saint literature? Do ancient and modern sources agree? Has there been an historical development of the definitions? Can any disagreements be rationalized? The results of this research reveal that the gospel is complex in that it is capable of handling all the problems of eternity, yet it is simple in that it is a plan of specific principles which lead man step by step to perfection. The author determined that ancient and modern sources do agree in placing six "first principles" at the beginning of …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis, submitted to Xavier University in partial fulfillment of requirements for a Master of Arts degree in 1969, examines Robert Browning's treatment of romantic love in his dramatic poems through the theoretical lens of elective affinities, which is a concept borrowed from chemistry and first applied to human relationships by Johann Wolfgang Goethe in his 1809 novel Wahlverwandtschaften (Elective Affinities). University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Readers both before and after the publication of Malcolm Lowry's Under the Volcano frequently misunderstood Lowry's Method and consequently oversimplified His Beaning, Judging the novel to be over- written and carelessly constructed, they suggested cute or revisions. close reading, however, vindicates teary, who Insisted that extreme care had gone into his multi-leveled hovel and that any substantial deletions or modifications would bare the overall plan of his work.
