The Impact Of The Immigration Act Of 1924 On American-Japanese Relations, Mazika E. Anthony

History Theses & Dissertations

The abrogation of the Gentlemen's Agreement. and the manner in which it was achieved deeply hurt Japanese pride, which had reached new proportions in the 20th century. The American action was interpreted as a deliberate affront to a friendly nation, and upset the traditional amity which had characterized American-Japanese relations since the opening of Japan by 'Commodore Mathew C. Perry. It is the aim of this paper to show the extent of anti-Japanese agitation in the United States, the impact of the Immigration Act of 1924 on American-Japanese relations, and its relationship to the conflict which developed between the two …

A Consideration Of Some Archetypes In Malory's Le Morte D'Arthur, Philip Lawrence Mead Jun 1969

A Consideration Of Some Archetypes In Malory's Le Morte D'Arthur, Philip Lawrence Mead

English Language and Literature ETDs

According to C. G. Jung, the fundamental human needs, loves, and hatreds are reflected in dreams in the forms of personalities and situations. These feelings, he maintains have always been common to humanity, and have been recorded in man's mythology

Extrapolating from this principle, Joseph Campbell, in The Hero with a Thousand Faces, has found enough common elements in mythologies from several cultures to postulate the "monomyth": a cyclical hero's life that is found in all the world's major mythologies. The cycle duplicates the quest a person makes in times of great stress into his own inner self for strength …

Various Muslim Interpretations Of The Curcifixion Of Jesus In The Qur'an, Rodney Otto Jun 1969

Various Muslim Interpretations Of The Curcifixion Of Jesus In The Qur'an, Rodney Otto

Master of Divinity Thesis

This paper is a beginning attempt to understand the Qur'anic teaching on the crucifixion of Jesus. Since the Qur'an is the basis of all Islamic thought, it is the primary emphasis of the study. This was done through the books of S. Zwemer, J. Robson, and G. Parrinder as well as M. Pickthall's translation of the Qur’an itself. From this base some attempt has been made to understand the traditions which have grown around the Qur’an. Because the Ahmadiyyah movement is so vocal in its opposition to the crucifixion, it is treated as an illustration of present day Muslim thought …

The Controversy Provoked By William Perkins Reformed Catholike- A Study In Protestant--Catholic Relations In The First Quarter Of The Seventeenth Century In England, Robert E. Webber Jun 1969

The Controversy Provoked By William Perkins Reformed Catholike- A Study In Protestant--Catholic Relations In The First Quarter Of The Seventeenth Century In England, Robert E. Webber

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

The controversy provoked by William Perkins' Reformed Catholike reflects the general social economic political, and theological setting of recusant history and literature. Although the actual controversy occurred between 1598 and 1614, with the exception of one work which appeared in 1625, the concern of the literature reflected the broader history of English Catholicism from 1559 to 1625.

The substance of the present thesis, however, will be limited to the years in which the controversy took place. The title of the thesis is therefore broader than the substance. The controversy essentially was over by 1614. The final book is merely a …

The History Of Radio Station Kfuo 1954 To 1969, Roger R. Kahle Jun 1969

The History Of Radio Station Kfuo 1954 To 1969, Roger R. Kahle

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this research paper is two-fold. First, I hope to bring together significant source material for future historical analyses of Radio Station KFUO during the years 1954-1969. Hence, this paper is accompanied by a bulky Appendix, that reproduces the significant historical documents, and by a detailed Bibliobraphy, noting the location of additional materials. Second, this time period was selected both because scanty historical study has been focussed on it heretofore, and because 1954-1969 is the tenure of KFUO's second General Manager. The events that occurred during this time period have significantly altered the historical motion of KFUO and …

The Mail Of Anguish: The Humor Of Emily Dickinson, Marian Hoffman Myers Jun 1969

The Mail Of Anguish: The Humor Of Emily Dickinson, Marian Hoffman Myers

Master's Theses

Because Emily Dickinson's intellectual humor gleamed through the more permeating emotional intensity of many of her poems, I undertook to discover the persistence of this facet of her poetic art and its relation to the humorists of her time and place. The research has been rewarding.

Agriculture In The Fredericksburg Area, Harold J. Muddiman

Master's Theses

This paper is a study of agriculture and rural conditions in the Virginia counties of Caroline, Culpeper, Orange, Spotsylvania, and Stafford from 1800 to 1840. These counties are located in the north-central section of the state. The easternmost of the counties, Caroline, is located on the edge of the Tidewater section; Orange and Culpeper, in the Piedmont, extend to the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The land is generally flat in the east, becomes more rolling as it approaches the mountains. Soils range from sandy loams in Caroline County to the sandy and clay loams with underlying crystalline rock …

United States Military Government In New Mexico, 1846-1851, Donald E. Metzler Jun 1969

United States Military Government In New Mexico, 1846-1851, Donald E. Metzler

History ETDs

From August 18, 1846, when New Mexico was Invaded by the United States Army during the Mexican War, until March 3, 1851, when the first territorial governor was Inaugurated, the conquered province was administered by a military government. To complicate matters, the American military commander established a "civil government" In New Mexico on September 22, 1846, although he had no authority to do so. During the entire period, the military and "civil" governments continued to exist either side by side, or with one superimposed on the other. The purpose of this paper Is to determine the true nature of the …

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Historical Development Of The Clarinet With Special Emphasis On Technique And The Resolving Of Technical Problems, Virgil M. Kocher

All Master's Theses

This paper was written for the purpose of discovering how the clarinet developed into the important instrument it is today. There have been many changes and additions to the mechanism and also in tonal characteristics since the first two-keyed clarinet was invented. These changes were the result of an effort to extend the range of the instrument, improve its tone, and to meet the demands of the composers of the day.

The New Testament Concept Of Shame, Richard Paul Bode Jun 1969

The New Testament Concept Of Shame, Richard Paul Bode

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Is the society which gave birth to the New Testament a guilt society or a shame society? Is the function of shame in the New Testament psychological or sociological? To what degree does the sanction of shame determine the behavior and life of the followers of Christ? These are some of the initial questions which aroused interest in carrying out the present study. The function of shame in the early Christian community and its usage in the New Testament does not conform precisely to either the Eastern or the Western view of shame: nor does it merely occupy a mediating …

On Defining "Good", Jess Michael Orenduff May 1969

On Defining "Good", Jess Michael Orenduff

Philosophy ETDs

The purpose of this thesis is to provide the correct definition of “good.” By correct I mean the definition in accord with the way people actually use the word. The work is carried out along the lines of the approach used by recent British philosophers such as G. E. Moore, Stephen Toulmin, A. J. Ayer, and R. M. Hare. In the first chapter the subjectivist definition of “good” is examined and rejected as inadequate. The same process is followed for non-cognitivism in chapter two and intuitionism in chapter three. In chapter four I present my own theory of the definition …

Figure Painting In The High School: Experiments And Recommendations, E. Leonora Perron May 1969

Figure Painting In The High School: Experiments And Recommendations, E. Leonora Perron

Dissertations and Theses

My research problem was to experiment with four high school art classes in drawing and painting the figure, to draw conclusions about how they relate to working with the figure, and to recommend methods that appeared to be most successful in broadening viewpoints, developing skills and increasing interest and involvement in art. This problem was selected because teenage students, in the vast majority of cases, have great difficulty in drawing or painting figures and, therefore, strenuously avoid it.

I discovered that a subjective approach that recognizes personal feelings, along with one that requires close looking, seemed to get the most …

The South And Thomas Nelson Page, Jo Ann Smith Johnson May 1969

The South And Thomas Nelson Page, Jo Ann Smith Johnson

Theses & Honors Papers

Thomas Nelson Page, a native Virginian, was known for writing short stories which idealized the Old South. At first glance his short stories seamed to glorify the south; once one delves deeper, they see that Page criticized the one thing his books revolved around. This thesis analyzes the four parts of Page’s short stories (religion, politics, economics, and social structure) to prove that even though Page has a deep love for the Old South, his short stories has embedded criticisms within them.

Acetate As A Fine Arts Medium, Catherine Lynette Chisholm May 1969

Acetate As A Fine Arts Medium, Catherine Lynette Chisholm

Dissertations and Theses

Acetate has traditionally been used as a packaging medium. This thesis proposes that acetate can be used as a fine arts medium and can be adjusted for use in the high school art class. Acetate has the advantages for classroom use of economy in price, minimal clean-up, incorporating qualities of college and painting. Experiments were conducted on acetate to determine what changes could be made to its surface. Samples of acetate were exposed for periods of time to common house-hold liquid and solid chemicals and heat. The results were recorded and the information gained applied to creating paintings and slides. …

The City, Lee Merriwether Clark May 1969

The City, Lee Merriwether Clark

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis is composed of five oil paintings and four synthetic paintings. The works are arranged in a sequence beginning with distant over views of the city and progressing toward more immediate views. Techniques change also, from the suggestive impressionistic mode, a style I explored in my early years of art education, to a studied application of large, solid, simplified shapes of color. In my work, realism is sacrificed for a decorative arrangement of color patterns.

From this creative experience I have reached conclusions about art education and my responsibility as an art instructor. Motivation is essential when introducing all …
