FonologíA Y FonéTica Segmental Del EspañOl, José Luis Freire Jan 1970

FonologíA Y FonéTica Segmental Del EspañOl, José Luis Freire

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Of primary concern in this thesis was the description of segmental sounds in Spanish. Special care was taken to maintain an inductive approach to the problem. It was felt that the adherence to this type of method would facilitate the rapid yet thorough understanding of a particular linguistic point by the student, by compelling him to formulate a generalization after studying a body of carefully selected data.

An Analysis Of The Women In Selected Poems Of Robert Frost, Carol Gantenbein Jan 1970

An Analysis Of The Women In Selected Poems Of Robert Frost, Carol Gantenbein

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Since Robert Frost created dramatic narratives and lyrics in which men and women characterizations are explored, many studies of such poems have concentrated on the treatment of men-women relationships. In the first chapter of this thesis approaches of various critics are presented as are a statement of the thesis and an overview of the poems explicated. This study is primarily intended to analyze the women as such and to examine their development as personalities possessing certain characteristics. As the thesis develops, Frost's compassion for and psychological insight into the female psyche and his portrayal of unique personalities with diversified characteristic …

The 1958 Good Offices Mission And Its Implications For French-American Relations Under The Fourth Republic, Lorin James Anderson Jan 1970

The 1958 Good Offices Mission And Its Implications For French-American Relations Under The Fourth Republic, Lorin James Anderson

Dissertations and Theses

In both a general review of Franco-American relations and in a more specific discussion of the Anglo-American good offices mission to France in 1958, this thesis has attempted first, to analyze the foreign policies of France and the United States which developed from the impact of the Second World War and, second, to describe Franco-American discord as primarily a collision of foreign policy goals--or, even farther, as a basic collision in the national attitudes that shaped those goals--rather than as a result either of Communist harassment or of the clash of personalities.

The Levellers' View Of History, Margaret Trowe Dec 1969

The Levellers' View Of History, Margaret Trowe

Honors Theses

The name "Levellers" applies to a political organization which functioned as a potent force in the politics of England in the late 1640s. During this period a fierce struggle for power was being fought, partly on an ideological level. The fighting of the first civil war had ended in 1646; the army of Parliament had defeated the royalist forces and had captured the King. In the wake of military victory, the various factions among the victors began to vie for power. In 1645 and 1646 tracts supporting the establishment of a representative democracy, the guarantee of civil and religious freedoms, …

The Ironic Dimension In Hawthorne's Short Fiction, Isidore H. Becker Dec 1969

The Ironic Dimension In Hawthorne's Short Fiction, Isidore H. Becker

English Language and Literature ETDs

While Nathaniel Hawthorne's tragic vision has been treated in depth in contemporary critical literature, his comic vision has received scant attention. One result of this trend has been to under-rate Hawthorne as a comic writer. Yet an analysis of his short fiction, both tales and sketches, reveals that Hawthorne was not deficient in the comic mode of writing. This dissertation takes up the problem of assessing Hawthorne as a comic writer, mainly from the point of view of irony. The ironic dimension, however, does not exclude tragedy; hence the area of investigation is not limited to the comic alone. In …

The Continuance Of Romance In American Fiction, Oliver James Benham

Critics recognize an important tradition of American romance in the nineteenth century, yet they pay little if any serious attention to the continuing tradition of romance in the literature of this century.

Precedents And Influences Affecting The Treaty Of Guadalupe-Hidalgo, Ralph A. Rowley Nov 1969

Precedents And Influences Affecting The Treaty Of Guadalupe-Hidalgo, Ralph A. Rowley

History ETDs

On February 2, 1848, representatives of the United States and Mexico signed the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo, which ended the Mexican War and also provided for the cession of a vast portion of the northern Mexican frontier to the United States. The treaty gradually sank into relative obscurity and has only recently re-emerged to a position of prominence, due primarily to court suits over old Mexican land grants presently being considered in those areas which were formerly a part of Mexico. The two most prominent aspects of the treaty pertain to questions of its legality and the guarantees of citizenship and …

Secularization In The Centralization Of The Cult In Deuteronomy, Marvin Huggins Nov 1969

Secularization In The Centralization Of The Cult In Deuteronomy, Marvin Huggins

Master of Divinity Thesis

Since the discussion of secularization has important implications for the Church today, I have undertaken to delve into the matter to discover how much support this idea has among Old Testament scholars. In this research I have discovered that there has been a wide divergence of opinion in regard to the centralization of the cult in Deuteronomy. There are differing views as to when it might have taken place and even as to whether it took place at all. In dealing with the matter of cult centralization from the point of view of its effect on the life of the …

The Bread Of Life Discourse In John 6: A Survey Of Select Literature, Ronald Jones Nov 1969

The Bread Of Life Discourse In John 6: A Survey Of Select Literature, Ronald Jones

Master of Divinity Thesis

A paper of this type also has numerous presuppositions. The paper assumes, for the purpose of discussion, that one may legitimately treat the entire discourse and that there is no need to discard smaller or larger units because of the form-critical process and its conclusions. If one were to treat the positions of the form critics regarding this chapter of John, either as a whole or in terms of its parts, one could easily write another paper on that topic alone.

The Movement Toward Religious Liberty: An Examination Of The Factors Responsible For The First Amendment To The Constitution Of The United States, William Grese Nov 1969

The Movement Toward Religious Liberty: An Examination Of The Factors Responsible For The First Amendment To The Constitution Of The United States, William Grese

Bachelor of Divinity

This is the context in which this research paper is written though its goal is much more modest. We do not hope to settle the question of the intent of our founding fathers. But we want to try to determine whether the churches were at all involved in this movement toward religious freedom. Were they in favor of a separation between church and state, or did they only seek to end preference? Or were they not involved at all? At the same time, we also want to examine the various factors responsible for the first amendment and to see what …

Some Investigations And Interpretations Of The Parable Of The Unjust Steward, Don Fahrenbrink Nov 1969

Some Investigations And Interpretations Of The Parable Of The Unjust Steward, Don Fahrenbrink

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this paper will be to present a brief and comparative overview of the most significant previous investigations and interpretations of the Parable of the Unjust Steward. This study is not an attempt to draw up a chronological history of how the parable has been interpreted in past eras. When older interpretations are incorporated it is for the sake of historical perspective or because they are significant. The life situations- which may have prompted a certain view have largely been omitted. Neither has a conscious effort been made to include a study of hermeneutical principles. The present paper …

The Origin Of The Concept Of The Day Of Yahweh: A Survey Of Modern Opinions, Thomas A. Hoffman Nov 1969

The Origin Of The Concept Of The Day Of Yahweh: A Survey Of Modern Opinions, Thomas A. Hoffman

Master's Essays (1922 - )

The eight century B. C. was a period of violent contrasts for the two tiny states that had descended from the empire of David and Solomon. It began with the last years of the destructive Syrian wars and vivid memories of the internal disorders accompanying the rise of the Jehu dynasty, reached a peak of prosperity and apparant (sic) well-being under Jeroboam II in the North and Uzziah and Jotham in the South, and then ended in total destruction of the Northern Kingdom and humiliating subjugation for the South at the hands of the Assyrians. It is from this period …

The Influence Of Zion Theology On The Centralization Of The Cult, Kurt Hendel Nov 1969

The Influence Of Zion Theology On The Centralization Of The Cult, Kurt Hendel

Master of Divinity Thesis

This particular study of the relationship of Zion theology to the centralization of the cult arose out of a general interest in the influence of the various Israelite traditions particularly on the prophets. I developed this interest while studying the use of traditions by the prophet Hosea. I chose to study Zion theology, because it seems to be a living tradition among the faithful Jews even today. Since Zion theology is so intimately connected with Jerusalem, I felt that it would be interesting to examine the particular role which Zion theology played in the centralization of the cult at Jerusalem. …

The History Of Women's Rights In The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod, Robert Fitzpatrick Nov 1969

The History Of Women's Rights In The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod, Robert Fitzpatrick

Master of Divinity Thesis

The shift in the practical position was made possible by a new approach to the interpretation of the Scriptural passages historically used as guides for establishing policy in regard to the question of women's rights in the church. I am not here attempting to be an exegete or a hermeneutician. The nature of this study is historical. I have attempted to report what happened, when it happened', and why it happened, an/to indicate the changes in the approach to .the passages involved which aid in understanding the shifts in practice which have occurred.

The Origin Of Origen's Origins, Kenneth Bernthal Nov 1969

The Origin Of Origen's Origins, Kenneth Bernthal

Master of Divinity Thesis

It is the purpose of this paper to trace a small piece of the history of man's answers to these eternal questions of Whence? Why? and Whither? We shall see how Origen, one of the early Christian church fathers, answered these questions in a work the vastness and completeness of which is exceeded only by the genius of its author.

A Study Of Omoiωma In Romans 6:5, John Bauer Nov 1969

A Study Of Omoiωma In Romans 6:5, John Bauer

Bachelor of Divinity

It is the purpose of this paper to review some of the answers that theologians have proposed to these questions. A further objective, on the basis of the proposed solutions to the problem, is an attempt to formulate a statement of what St. Paul did mean by this word (if this is possible!),and then to suggest some further areas of study which appear’ essential for a satisfactory determination of the meaning and force of ὄμοίωμα.

A Social History Of Table Music From Ancient Egypt Through The Eighteenth Century, George Calvin Foreman Oct 1969

A Social History Of Table Music From Ancient Egypt Through The Eighteenth Century, George Calvin Foreman

Music ETDs

The social practice of table music, i.e. music performed at banquets or meals, has not, apparently, been previously considered as a subject for organized research. The term is not even given an entry in many of the major musical dictionaries and encyclopedias; those which do include the term offer only surface and, in general, incomplete definitions. The present study, therefore, attempts to present a history of the social uses and types of table music from antiquity through the eighteenth century. The findings of the study are based on three sources of information: actual score examples of music composed for or …

It was the purpose of this study to investigate classroom procedures and practices in the utilization of televised music instruction at the fifth grade level as presented by KNME-TV, Channel 5 and the Albuquerque Public Schools, Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The primary goals or the investigation were to research the existing status of the televised music program and its utilization within the classroom and to examine significant relationships among the phenomena. The investigation sought to cover five primary areas of inquiry:

1. The extent of use of the televised music classes.

2. How the teleclasses are being utilized.

3. …

An Ethnolinguistic Study Of West African Influences On Bahain Portuguese, William W. Megenney Sep 1969

An Ethnolinguistic Study Of West African Influences On Bahain Portuguese, William W. Megenney

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

The problem of African influence in Brazil centers around the city of Salvador da Bahia. It was here that the largest nucleus of slaves imported from western Africa existed. Today the city remains the center of ethnic activities originating from western Africa, and therefore Bahia is the focal point where inquiries concerning Brazil's African heritage should be initiated.

In the libraries and public archives background materials were collected dealing with past studies in Afro-Brazilian ethnolinguistics. An analysis of these previous studies provided insights into both speculative and scientific methods of investigation. The works served to relate con-temporary social and ethnolinguistic …

Ortega As A System, Lawrence Benton Aug 1969

Ortega As A System, Lawrence Benton

American Studies ETDs

The Spanish philosopher, José Ortega y Gasset, is best known in this country for his provocative essays on contemporary social and aesthetic issues. Several of his books have been translated into English and widely distributed (see the Bibliography for a list of English translations). Apparently he has a wide readership in the English-speaking world. In spite of the popularity of his own works, however, very little has been written in English about him, the total critical output amounting to a few articles in scholarly journals and a book or two (again, see the Bibliography). Thus, the central critical questions surrounding …

A Comparison Of The Themes Of Edward Albee And Friedrich DüRrenmatt, Thomas B. Stribling Aug 1969

A Comparison Of The Themes Of Edward Albee And Friedrich DüRrenmatt, Thomas B. Stribling

English Language and Literature ETDs

The thesis compares the major themes of Edward Albee and Friedrich Dürrenmatt. The first chapter, "The Uncertain Nature of the Universe," suggests that in spite of man's technological developments certainty in life is an anachronism. Both Albee and Dürrenmatt emphasize that man may not know himself through society, but only in solitude. Dürrenmatt represents the social structure in The Physicists as chaotic and unpredictable. Albee represents the illusion of society most pointedly in The Zoo Story and in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Albee and Dürrenmatt say our chaotic condition is evidence of man's lack of power over his environment. …

El Tema De La Muerte En Al Novela "La Muerte De Artemio Cruz" De Carlos Fuentes, Felina Noris Roine Aug 1969

El Tema De La Muerte En Al Novela "La Muerte De Artemio Cruz" De Carlos Fuentes, Felina Noris Roine

Master's Theses
