The History Of The Attitudes Within The Missouri Synod Toward Life Insurance, James W. Albers May 1972

The History Of The Attitudes Within The Missouri Synod Toward Life Insurance, James W. Albers

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

This dissertation had several objectives. The chief objective was simply to describe the history of attitudes within the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod toward life insurance. There has been an oral tradition within the Missouri Synod which states that although the Synod had once opposed life insurance it no longer did so because life insurance has changed. The first objective, therefore, has been to try to determine the validity of that oral tradition.

Confidences To Clergymen: Their Legal Status As Privileged Information, Lynn Claussen May 1972

Confidences To Clergymen: Their Legal Status As Privileged Information, Lynn Claussen

Master of Divinity Thesis

This study is an effort to inform the parish pastor of his rights in this area. It is written from the viewpoint and knowledge of a layman and is not an attempt to present legal advice in any particular situation which might occur during a pastor's functions as a counselor. It is merely an attempt to lay the facts before him and hopefully enable a more enlightened approach to the possible legal pitfalls of the counseling situation. In every case where there is a legal question involved the pastor should consult an attorney.

Attitudes In The Early Church Affecting Petrine Primacy, Gilbert Franke May 1972

Attitudes In The Early Church Affecting Petrine Primacy, Gilbert Franke

Master of Divinity Thesis

This study is an investigation of the attitudes expressed by the early church toward St. Peter. While most attempts to understand the origin of Rome's claim to authority based on Petrine primacy have dealt with attitudes expressed in documents, the approach here is to examine the evidence found in various types of artistic expression. It is hoped that the attitudes toward St. Peter which affected and may have caused the unique association between himself and Rome are clarified. It is important to note in this respect that this study deals with the development of attitudes actually held in the early …

Contacts Between Rome And Ancient Ethiopia, John Theodore Swanson May 1972

Contacts Between Rome And Ancient Ethiopia, John Theodore Swanson

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

At the death of Augustus, Rome possessed four principal provinces: in Africa: Numidia, Africa (Tunisia), Cyrenaica, and Egypt. Soon after, Mauretania as:well would become a province, thus creating a sphere of direct Roman control stretching across the top of the African continent. These territories would become Rome's most valuable possessions, economically and culturally; their influence on Roman history, an influence not to be overlooked by historians., would be profound. Yet the narrow strip of land that was Roman Africa represents only a tiny portion of the vast bulk of the African continent, and there were peoples beyond the Roman frontiers …

Chaucer's Knight's Tale : A Symbolic Reading, Naomi Pasquine May 1972

Chaucer's Knight's Tale : A Symbolic Reading, Naomi Pasquine

Master's Theses

Chaucer's Knight Tale has called forth much critical comment. Individual lines have been commented upon, characters have been analysed and the resolution of the poem has been discussed. Critics have offered suggestions as to the poem's meaning, but an interpretation that encompasses all aspects of the poem and gives the reader the feeling that all the poetic elements of the poem have been resolved into that interpretation has not been presented. What the reader is looking for is an interpretation that will give the poem what we call today a sense of its own being or an existence of its …

Preaching In The World Of Electronic Technology-Implicatiions For Homiletics In The Message Of H. Marshall Mcluhan, Clifford Allen Winter

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The contemporary communications environment is described in this thesis for the purpose of determining the ways in which it conditions the learning and perception of modern man. The basic resource is the writing of Herbert Marshall McLuhan, Director of the Center for Culture and Technology at the University of Toronto and author of several books about the media. His understanding of the history of media and his descriptions of the electronic environment and modern man constitute a comprehensive analysis of communications in the current era. McLuhan's background, his expressed assumptions, and basic resources are described in order to provide a …

The Concept Of Morphosis In The Writings Of Gregory Of Nyssa, Constantine John Andrews May 1972

The Concept Of Morphosis In The Writings Of Gregory Of Nyssa, Constantine John Andrews

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

We too have chosen Gregory of Nyssa as the subject for this thesis, in order to trace the concept of Greek paideia as morphosis in his writings. But what about Gregory himself? How much and to what degree was he influenced by earlier writers, Christian and non-Christian? Was Gregory, as some of his contemporaries claimed, interpolating a foreign philosophy into the Bible? Was Jaeger, who devoted most of his later efforts to Gregorian studies, justified in concluding in Humanistische Reden und Vortrage, that Gregory of Nyssa was completely dependent on Plato?

"Measured Feet And Jingling Lines" : The Poetry And Poetic Attitudes Of Nathaniel Hawthorne, David L. Evans May 1972

"Measured Feet And Jingling Lines" : The Poetry And Poetic Attitudes Of Nathaniel Hawthorne, David L. Evans

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A study of Hawthorne's poetry and poetic attitudes encompasses three separate but integrally related areas. First, few people realize that Hawthorne wrote verse, and no other investigation of the nature and significance of the meager surviving body of this poetry has yet been undertaken. But Hawthorne's failure to create verse of enduring quality is intimately connected with the second part of the study, Hawthorne's own views of 19th century poetry and the motives surrounding his deliberate rejection of poetry as his dominant creative mode. And when his contemporaries glowingly label him as a "poet," despite his strong refusal to write …

Fort Berthold Indian Reservation: A Land Use Study To 1971, Paul Felter May 1972

Fort Berthold Indian Reservation: A Land Use Study To 1971, Paul Felter

Theses and Dissertations

Can the land resources of a contemporary Indian reservation provide the basis for a self~sufficient community? To help answer that question, this study traces the agricultural development as well as other land use programs and problems of the Three Tribes of the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation in North Dakota.

The procedure involved a detailed study of the impact of Bureau of Indian Affairs-inspired agricultural projects, treaties and land cession agreements, land allotment programs, land fractionalization, and the building of the Garrison Dam. The results obtained show that the semi-agricultural Three Tribes passed from self-sufficiency before their reservation was established into …

Graduate Recital, Saralyn M. Gibson May 1972

Graduate Recital, Saralyn M. Gibson

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

J. S. Bach, in his Italian Concerto, has the solo keyboard carry on a dialogue with itself. The work appeared in 1735 in Bach's Clavierubung, Volume II, which had to excuse its printed existence by explaining that it had instructional value. And so, along with this Concerto Nach Italiaennischen Gusto, or concerto "following the Italian taste," it also included an Overture (or Partita) " in the French manner. "

Graduate Recital, Daniel C. Rich May 1972

Graduate Recital, Daniel C. Rich

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

From the beginning of the recital preparation , which began seriously about nine months prior to the performance, certain objectives were established. These objectives dealt with the areas of performance and composition. Concerning the performance, the objectives were to perform on the three "standard" symphonic trumpets -- the Bb , C, and D -- with competency and musicality; to play successfully varying styles from the periods which produced great trumpet literature -- the Baroque and Modern -- and to improve specific personal technique problems. Since composition is an integral part of the music process, it was hoped that an original …

Significant Interpretations Of Developing Structures Of The Ministry-1880-1970, Roland A. Frantz May 1972

Significant Interpretations Of Developing Structures Of The Ministry-1880-1970, Roland A. Frantz

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

A historical study of the Church's ministry soon discloses a great deal of variety in the ministerial office. As Niebuhr and Williams remind us in their historical survey of the Protestant ministry, while there are a number of aspects of ministry that are agreed upon and shared in the various historic churches, there are also divergent interpretations regarding the nature and essence of the ministerial office.

Social And Political Thought Of Federica Montseny, Spanish Anarchist, 1923-1937, Shirley F. Fredricks

History ETDs

Federica Montseny emerged during the 1920's and 1930's as the leading anarchist theoretician of Spain. As a cultural critic, novelist, essayist and speaker, she did much to educate and radicalize the Spanish laboring class. She directed their aimless discontent into what she considered to be the principled path of anarchism. She influenced the development of the Spanish labor movement as a leader of the Iberian Anarchist Federation (FAI) and as an active member of the National Confederation of Labor (CNT). As a social critic she called attention to the extreme injustices of Spanish society. In formulating her political theory, she …

"The Countries Sweet Simplicity": Devonshire Life In The Poetry Of Robert Herrick, David F. Beer Apr 1972

"The Countries Sweet Simplicity": Devonshire Life In The Poetry Of Robert Herrick, David F. Beer

English Language and Literature ETDs

This dissertation explores the influence of his life in Devon on the poetry of Robert Herrick. Much has been naively assumed regarding this influence, particularly by authors of short popular articles, or in brief introductions to a selection of the poet’s work in anthologies. Little has been actually produced, however, to substantiate the claim that Herrick's poems on country life are what they are because the poet moved from London to Dean Prior in 1630 and lived there almost eighteen years before publishing his complete works in one volume. That many of his poems cannot be dated with absolute certainty …

An Annotated Critical Edition Of TambiéN Tiene El Sol Menguante, By Luis Velez De Guevara And Francisco De Rojas Zorrilla, James Stone Rambo

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

Tambien tiene el sol menguante is a refundicion of Mira de Amescua's two-part drama, La prospera y la adversa fortuna de don Bernardo de Cabrera, concerning the famous fourteenth-century favorite of Pedro IV of Aragon. The purpose of this dissertation is to provide a clear text of the play, along with thorough textual notes.

There are four extant versions of the play in question: 1) a handwritten, censored manuscript whose censures are dated 1655, 2) a printed version from a collection published in 1666, 3) a handwritten manuscript of the eighteenth century (probably dating from before 1735), and 4) …

Against The Grain: The Achievement Of John Hersey, Samuel Bruce Girgus Apr 1972

Against The Grain: The Achievement Of John Hersey, Samuel Bruce Girgus

American Studies ETDs

Since the Second World War, John Hersey has produced a sizeable body of work in both fiction and non-fiction. In 1950, a Pulitzer Prize for fiction, a phenomenally successful and significant piece of journalism and a major American novel gave him the reputation for being one of America's most promising young writers. For the past twenty years, however, his work largely has been unacclaimed and major critics have excluded him from their discussions of the contemporary novel and contemporary culture. In general, his works have not received the close critical examination they deserve. This is partly because Hersey's complex attitude …

The Fiction Of Kate Chopin, Peter James Peterson Apr 1972

The Fiction Of Kate Chopin, Peter James Peterson

English Language and Literature ETDs

Kate Chopin's extant fiction includes two novels and nearly one hundred short stories and sketches. The present study closely examines that fiction by chronological periods in order to present a coherent view of the author's artistic development and philosophical concerns.

Kate Chopin wrote her first novel, At Fault, after completing only a few short stories. Although the novel is clumsily executed, it introduces most of the themes which characterize her mature work. Her early stories, primarily designed for juvenile and family magazines, feature picturesque characters and sentimental resolutions. As she gradually developed less limiting markets for her work, Mrs. …

Acrylic Polymer Transparencies, Inez Allen Kendrick

Dissertations and Theses

Brief mentions by three writers on synthetic painting media first intrigued my interest in a' new technique of making transparent acrylic paintings on glass or plexiglas supports, some of which were said to I I simulate stained-glass windows. In writing this paper on acrylic polymer transparencies my problem was three-told: first. to determine whether any major recognized works of art have been produced by this, method; second, to experiment with the technique and materials in order to explore their possibilities for my own work; and third, to determine whether both materials and methods would be suitable for use in a …
