Literary Allusion And The Homilectic Style Of E. M. Forster: A Study In The Relationship Between The Tales And The Novels, Robert Franklin Gish Jun 1972

Literary Allusion And The Homilectic Style Of E. M. Forster: A Study In The Relationship Between The Tales And The Novels, Robert Franklin Gish

English Language and Literature ETDs

The function of literary allusion and homiletic phrasing in E. M. Forster's fiction has not been adequately analyzed. Such a consideration offers insight into Forster's means of structuring his fiction and his concept of rhythm. It can be shown that in both small and large ways, in the construction of phrases, in sustained dialog and in comments by the narrator, in quips and in speeches, Forster's short stories work allusively and homiletically. Moreover, all of Forster's fiction demonstrates allusive repetition of and reference to not just other works of literature but to itself. His own short stories merit careful attention …

The Symbolic Photograph: A Means To Self-Knowledge; A Jungian Approach To The "Photographic Opus", Steven D. Foster Jun 1972

The Symbolic Photograph: A Means To Self-Knowledge; A Jungian Approach To The "Photographic Opus", Steven D. Foster

Art & Art History ETDs

This dissertation is primarily a response to a five-year-old question: "Why do you make photographs?" A kind of "answer" was found with the help of Carl Jung, depth psychologist, especially in his psychological interpretation of the medieval symbolic process--the alchemical opus. For Jung, alchemy prepared the ground for his psychology of the unconscious. For me, Jung's inquiry into the "secrets" of the alchemical opus is a workable analogy to what I have termed the "photographic opus." Through this analogy I feel I have shed new light on the creative process from the viewpoint of a photographer who is in search …

The Controversy Surrounding The Ministry Of Harry Emerson Fosdick In The First Presbyterian Church Of New York City, 1922-1925, Harold H. Vences

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The 1920's in America was a decade of turbulence. During that period several facets of American society such as politics, education, culture and religion went through a period of rapid change which saw many hallowed traditions and customs challenged. One of the most affected areas of American society, during .the twenties, was religion. It was during that period that the fundamentalist-modernist controversy took place. The two protagonists were the fundamentalists, who organized to maintain and defend traditional Christian orthodoxy, and the modernists, who drew from the heritage of European and American liberal Protestantism and insisted upon reinterpreting Christianity in order …

Crystalline beauty which fades and reappears with each slight turn of the band; frozen faces whose every wrinkle and subtle curve of the lips can be examined; a watch or necklace or lace dress seen with utmost clarity: this is the beauty of daguerreotypes. Long exposure, careful development on a polished surface, and the absence of an intervening negative contribute to the timeless quality of these tiny pictures which awakened the world to a whole new visual medium. Little touching up as done and tinting was used with great gentleness. Composition was direct and simple, perhaps bordering on monotony, but …

A Functional Interpretation Of Pottery From Batan Island, Philippines, Joanne M. Laetsch May 1972

A Functional Interpretation Of Pottery From Batan Island, Philippines, Joanne M. Laetsch

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis is a report on a pottery analysis which was carried out in the laboratory of the Department of Anthropology at Portland State University. The earthenware materials involved were collected from three surface sites on Batan Island, Philippines, during the summer of 1969.

The interpretation of these potteries was based upon the direct-historical approach to archaeological research. The use of this method was proposed after a cursory examination of the earthenwares revealed certain general similarities between the archaeological potteries and the ethnographically-known wares produced in the area at the present time. One of the sites was a known habitation, …

Illusion Und Verfremdung: Begriff, Form Und Wirkung, Bezogen Auf Bertolt Brecht: "Der Gute Mensch Von Sezuan", Robert E. Folk May 1972

Illusion Und Verfremdung: Begriff, Form Und Wirkung, Bezogen Auf Bertolt Brecht: "Der Gute Mensch Von Sezuan", Robert E. Folk

Dissertations and Theses

Perhaps Bertolt Brecht's most obvious intention in connection with the theater was to help change the economic conditions, under which the people in a capitalistic society live. But, according to him, this could only be possible if the people were to develop a critical attitude and awareness of the contradictions that exist in such a society, in which "exploiters exploit the exploited", to put it in Brecht's straightforward terminology. It was his goal in the theater to help the spectator achieve this critical attitude. However, it was his opinion that this could only be done by rejecting the traditional theater …

Leben Heisst Töten: Die Kriegsdeutung Ernst Jüngers Dargestellt An In Stahlgewittern Und Der Kampf Als Inneres Erlebnis, Sabine Schroeder-Sherwin

Dissertations and Theses

In this thesis an attempt is made to show the impression World War I made on the mind of a young German author. I have tried to interpret his outlook on war and to show how he could arrive at such a seemingly sordid statement as "living is killing".

In 1920 a relatively unknown member of the Reichswehr published an account of World War I that soon became a bestseller. The book was In Stahlgewittern, its author Ernst Jünger. It was followed two years later by Der Kampf als inneres Erlebnis. Their common subject was war. The success …

Die Intrigantin In Ausgewählten Frühen Werken Gerhart Hauptmanns, Sidney Thomas Stuller May 1972

Die Intrigantin In Ausgewählten Frühen Werken Gerhart Hauptmanns, Sidney Thomas Stuller

Dissertations and Theses

Gerhart Hauptmann, whose naturalistic period embraced the years 1885-1906, gave the world a negative picture of the woman who by her demeanor or actions destroys a man. In this thesis a distinction is drawn between lower class, unsophisticated women like Lene Thiel or Hanne Sehäl and more highly educated and somewhat emancipated women such as Anna Mahr and Hanna Elias. The former type destroyed the man through more coarse or brutal methods while the latter naturally employed a higher degree of sophistication exercising their destructive influence. Moreover, the former type married the men they subsequently ruined whereas the latter did …

C.G. Jung And The Renaissance Of The Mysteries., John Thomas Brady May 1972

C.G. Jung And The Renaissance Of The Mysteries., John Thomas Brady

Philosophy ETDs

The history of Western Philosophy was precipitated by the individualization of human experiencing. The Greek classical era, which produced the West's first 'philosophers,' was the cultural progeny of the first humans in our historical record to perceive a world from the perspective of a consciousing aware of itself as a distinct entity. Prior to classical times, perception was a corporate phenomenon: in the Homeric world, the group, not the individual, was the matrix of thought and experience.

Plato did not want poets in his ideal polis-not because of what they had to say, but because of the way they said …

The Old Road, Dennis C. Gilbert

Senior Scholar Papers

The plot consists of the progression which the characters undergo. For the old man, the plot is his movement away from the earthly existence of the farm and into the physical process of the seasons. For the older grandson, it is the movement away from the past, symbolized by the farm, and into the present symbolized by his marriage and coupling with society. For the younger grandson, the movement is from childhood to the maturity which being alone demands in order for him to survive.

Charlotte Buell Coman, American Impressionist, Louise M. Lewis May 1972

Charlotte Buell Coman, American Impressionist, Louise M. Lewis

Art & Art History ETDs

Abstract

In the study of past movements in American art, there has been a trend to discuss more what is distinctly American while not denying European influences. As with other movements, Impressionism in the United States has recently received considerable attention, not so much for its European origins as for its native qualities.

While the late American Impressionists such as Twachtman, Robinson, Weir and Prendergast followed more closely the scientific tenets of the French Impressionists, there were other American Impressjonists who incorporated only the color formulas and compositional formats of the Impressionists. Retaining the poetic mood and brush techniques of …

The Religious Views Of John Stuart Mill, Wilford N. Paul May 1972

The Religious Views Of John Stuart Mill, Wilford N. Paul

Philosophy ETDs

The main problem I undertake to solve is the proper interpretation of what Mill's religious views were. A large number of conflicting and contradictory interpretations has appeared since the publication of Mill's Three Essays on Religion in 1874. And the many publications attending the recent revival of interest in Mill have contained little substantial help respecting this problem. My procedure is first to delineate the dominant modes of thought that influenced Mill during the first thirty years or so of his life. Turning next to Mill's writings specifically on the subject of religion, I discuss his conception of the general …

Le ThéAtre PoéTique De ThéOdore De Banville, Christina Candelaria GutiéRrez May 1972

Le ThéAtre PoéTique De ThéOdore De Banville, Christina Candelaria GutiéRrez

Art & Art History ETDs

Theodore de Banville is known to most students of French literature as a Parnassian poet. He was also a dramatic author. With the exception of one or two plays his dramatic work remains relatively unknown. None the less his theatre merits study as an expression of his time in that it does not reflect his time. Banville drew the subjects for his plays from history and from mythology. He remained faithful to the "art for art’s sake" movement in his dramatic work as well as in his poetry. Banville’s plays do not paint French life of his day nor do …

From Visigothic To Gothic: A Study Of Styles In The Church Of The Divine Saviour; Vejer De La Frontera (Cadiz), Spain, Dolores Coppel Bogard

Art & Art History ETDs

Because all records have been destroyed, a comparative study is necessary in order to date the various building programs which have taken place in the Church of the Divine savior of Vejer de la Frontera. The different styles within the church range from Visigothic to Gothic, and individual discussions of each follow a general historical background of the area. Concomitantly, it is shown that Spanish architecture had a significance and a style of its own much earlier that is normally recognized.

The Visigothic element is confine to a study of four capitals, their column shafts, and their bases found in …

José Da Silva PaíS: The Defense And Expansion Of Southern Brazil, 1735-1749, Charles Dorenkott Jr.

History ETDs

The eighteenth-century defense and expansion of southern Brazil culminated in the establishment of Portuguese settlements in both Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina. As the first governor or these territories Jose da Silva País played a crucial role in these developments. Born in Lisbon to a non-nobiliary family, Silva País rose through the ranks to a position of prominence in the Portuguese empire. His technical training as a military engineer was the major reason for his initial success, and his daring and courage in the War of Spanish Succession brought him to the court's attention. The reform monarch, João …

From our survey of the controversy over divine wrath in the history of theology it should be evident that we are not dealing with a matter of minor importance but one of great significance for the whole structure of theology and basic to our understanding of biblical teaching.
