Manumission Of Slaves In Fauquier County, Virginia, 1830-1860, Thomas C. Givens

Honors Theses

Efforts ro free slaves in the Unites States legally took two paths--manumission ofspecific slaces by individual masters and emancipation of all slaves by legislative or constitutional act. During the Civil War, all slaves in belligerent states received their freedom through emancipation. Prior to that time, in spite of agitation by Abolitionists and other groups, attempts of general emancipation failed in the South. In 1831-32, the General Assembly of Virginia seriously considered the possibility of emancipation couled with removal from the stae of the black population, but the proposition faile dbecause of the enormous practical difficulties which such an undertaking would …

An Annotated Critical Edition Of También Tiene El Sol Menguante By Luis Vélez De Guevara And Francisco De Rojas Zorrilla, James Stone Rambo

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

También tiene el sol menguante is a refundición of Mira de Amescua's two-part drama, La próspera y la adversa fortuna de don Bernardo de Cabrera, concerning the famous fourteenth-century favorite of Pedro IV of Aragon. The purpose of this dissertation is to provide a clear text of the play, along with thorough textual notes.

There are four extant versions of the play in question: 1) a handwritten, censored manuscript whose censures are dated 1655, 2) a printed version from a collection published in 1666, 3) a handwritten manuscript of the eighteenth century (probably dating from before 1735), and 4) …

The Response Of The Black Community In Mississippi To The Dixiecrat Movement In 1948, Walter Mcclusky Hurns Mar 1972

The Response Of The Black Community In Mississippi To The Dixiecrat Movement In 1948, Walter Mcclusky Hurns

Morehead State Theses and Dissertations

The thesis of the research is that the States' Right Movement of 1948 in Mississippi helped to create a new political awareness among blacks for the first time since Radical Reconstruction. As a result of the Dixiecrat revolt against Truman and civil rights, blacks in the state became more assertive about their rights and in 1948 organized themselves gradually to demand their civil rights. In response to the Dixiecrat Movement can be found the origins of the civil rights movement of the fifties and sixties.

A Pastor's Guidebook For Effective Pastoral Calling, Douglas O'Neal Dougherty Mar 1972

A Pastor's Guidebook For Effective Pastoral Calling, Douglas O'Neal Dougherty

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

There are many phases of the pastoral ministry, each one having a unique and necessary purpose. A high emphasis has always been placed on the pastor as a preacher. Serving as administrator has also been encouraged. Today, the phase of the pastor as counselor has been reaching the forefront. It is true that these are all vital parts of the pastoral ministry, but there is yet another phase that must not be neglected. This is pastoral calling. Without effectively practicing this phase, the pastor's ministry is lacking and incomplete.

Theological Education By Extension, Vance R. Field

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

An influential book, Latin American Church Growth, has brought to light one of the most acute problems in missions today. It reported that there are about seventy-five thousand men who serve as pastors in Latin America, but only fifteen thousand of them have ever had any .Bible training. This problem is magnified by the rapid increase in church growth.

The Minister's Role With The Drug Problem, Roger Dennis Wolff Mar 1972

The Minister's Role With The Drug Problem, Roger Dennis Wolff

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Because of the increasing use of drugs in this country today, the writer has a deep concern for the potential dangers inherent in the problem. On August 21, 1971, the American Broadcasting Company presented on Channel two in Portland, Oregon, "Heroes and Heroin." On the program they quoted President Nixon, as saying, "drug abuse is America's number one enemy." On June 17, 1971, President Nixon asked congress for 155 million dollars to help stem drug abuse. He described drug addiction as having "assumed the dimensions of a national emergency."

The Motive For The Christian Life According To The Epistle Of James, Paul H. Dorn Mar 1972

The Motive For The Christian Life According To The Epistle Of James, Paul H. Dorn

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This study of the epistle of James arose out of a pastoral concern that members of the Christian community live their Christian discipleship. James is marked by its vigorous concern for Christians living a godly life; at the same time it raises a problem. The problem is that there is no motive immediately evident with which James encourages its readers to godly living--certainly nothing as evident as "by the mercies of God" (Rom. 12:1) or "if God so loved us" (1 John 4:11). The purpose of this study is to discover what the epistle's motive for Christian living is.

E. B. White And Henry Thoreau : A Study Of Satiric Technique Related To World View, Ruth Lynn Craig Mar 1972

E. B. White And Henry Thoreau : A Study Of Satiric Technique Related To World View, Ruth Lynn Craig

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Satire is a mode of literature that provides a good index to an author's value system. By analyzing the satiric techniques of an author, a student can assess what the author's values are and how he evaluates the conditions of the world in relationship to those values (either his values or a set of values to which he adheres). There are two kinds of satiric techniques--bipolar and dialectic. Bipolar satire expresses the point of view that there are two ways to live in the world--a right way and a wrong way. A satirist who uses this type of satire assumes …

The Development Of Pentecostalism Out Of Revivalism In America: A Reaction Against The Established Churches, Paul F. Hutchinson Mar 1972

The Development Of Pentecostalism Out Of Revivalism In America: A Reaction Against The Established Churches, Paul F. Hutchinson

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Because the writer has been personally involved with neo-Pentecostals in the charismatic movement, this thesis was undertaken in an attempt to understand that movement in terms of its history. Such history cannot yet be written. At the same time, traditional Pentecostalism has had a strong influence on the charismatic movement. Apart from the fact that the charismatic movement is much less institutionalized than the older Pentecostalism, there is no essential normative difference between the two. A thorough understanding of the latter contributes material to an understanding of the former.

Shakespeare's Coriolanus:The Icon Of Mars., Claus-Peter Buechmann Feb 1972

Shakespeare's Coriolanus:The Icon Of Mars., Claus-Peter Buechmann

English Language and Literature ETDs

The aim of this study is to suggest a perhaps more satisfactory reading than has hitherto been offered of Shakespeare's Coriolanus by exploring the consequences of Caius Marius Coriolanus' view of himself as “son and Heire to Mars.” Previous studies of the play in general and its awesome protagonist in particular have led to either critical uneasiness or outright condemnation; however, an approach to Coriolanus through the Renaissance icon of Mars, I find, renders an interpretation which establishes great conceptual integrity rather than faltering artistic powers on Shakespeare’s part and, furthermore, accounts for the frequently noted absence of “that peculiar …

Shepherd, Sheep, And Goats; A Study In Old Testament Concepts And Imagery, Jack Ferguson Feb 1972

Shepherd, Sheep, And Goats; A Study In Old Testament Concepts And Imagery, Jack Ferguson

Master of Divinity Thesis

The problem which this paper is concerned with, therefore, has to do with the meaning of flock imagery when itis applied to the nation of Israel, especially when Israelis compared to a goat or to a mixed flock of sheep and goats. Consequently, it is my purpose: (a) to examine the nature and composition of the flocks in the Old Testament; (b) to place a new emphasis on the nature, value, and necessity of goats as members of a flock; (c) to demonstrate the fact and significance of the combined flock, especially when it becomes a phrase which refers to …

The Chamizal Tract And The Mexican American Border, Noel Alex Thoisy Norwick Jan 1972

The Chamizal Tract And The Mexican American Border, Noel Alex Thoisy Norwick

History ETDs

This thesis presents a brief history of the dispute concerning the Chamizal tract in such a manner as to point out particularly its legal relationship to the overall trend of affairs affecting the MexicanAmerican boundary from 1823 up until 1971. The format utilized is somewhat that of a legal brief, beginning with Mexico’s acknowledgement of Stephen Austin’s Texas grant and going from that point through a descriptive analysis of those events leading up to and sustaining the Chamizal dispute for practically one hundred years. The study ends with those events that implemented the Chamizal Convention of 1964. The conclusion suggests …

W. S. U'Ren And The Fight For Government Reform And The Single Tax: 1908-1912, David Elvin Lindstrom

Dissertations and Theses

In the study of Oregon politics, the importance of developments in the early twentieth century have been largely overlooked by popular historians. As a result, many have lost the perspective of the sweeping reforms that reformers presented to Oregon's electorate. Another complicating factor is that voters dealing with the issues during the period had such disparaging attitudes towards some of the reforms, that no thought was given to preserving their memory for future generations. In addition, the personal papers of W. S. U'Ren, Oregon's leading reformer, are not available. This makes perspective even more difficult. Therefore, the research problem is …

Martin Luther King's Position In The Black Power Movement From 1955 To 1968, Carol Breit Jan 1972

Martin Luther King's Position In The Black Power Movement From 1955 To 1968, Carol Breit

Honors Theses

From events in 1955 in Montgomery, Alabama, a citadel of Southern segregation practices and American rascist attitudes, the Negro Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. was to be pivoted to a pedestal of national prominence and of international fame. By 1958 King had become the symbol of the new black revolt locally, nationally, and internationally. Black had finally found a black leader to articulate their needs and demands to white America and for themselves. King's charismatic personality and powerful oratory drew both whites and blacks to him and to this cause. To some degree he unified the civil rights movement in …

The Mannerist Painter And Donne : A Correlation Of The Arts, Christine Steinbach Jan 1972

The Mannerist Painter And Donne : A Correlation Of The Arts, Christine Steinbach

Honors Theses

There is a certain equality of painting and poetry expressed by Horace in his descriptive phrase ut pictura poesis. The implication is that the arts are practically interchangeable, one may describe the other, and the genius of each arises from the same source. Some of the best evidences of similar inspiration and perception within these two arts can be illustrated through a comparison of Italian Mannerist painting and Metaphysical poetry as embodied in various works of John Donne. Although these works are separated by chronological time and geographical location, they are, nevertheless, the product of mutual attitudes and stress common …

Análisis De Formas Interiores Y Exteriores De La Novela El Día Señalado De Manuel Mejía Vallejo, Elisa Dávila.A Jan 1972

Análisis De Formas Interiores Y Exteriores De La Novela El Día Señalado De Manuel Mejía Vallejo, Elisa Dávila.A

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
