Spain's Royal Corps Of Engineers In The Western Borderlands, 1764-1815, Janet Fireman Sep 1972

Spain's Royal Corps Of Engineers In The Western Borderlands, 1764-1815, Janet Fireman

History ETDs

Founded in 1711, the Royal Corps of Engineers was established in the wake of destruction and turmoil caused by the War of Spanish Succession. King Philip V of Spain encouraged foreigners, like the Marqués de Verboom who was father to the Corps, to help rebuild a war-torn, decadent empire. The Corps was born as an enlightened, well-organized institution of eighteenth century Europe. Corpsmen were sent to the Indies in the first decades of the Corps' existence, but it was not until after the Seven Years' War in Europe that the Corps became truly significant on the northern frontier of Spain's …

Selected Poems, 1970-1972, Thomas John Hill Sep 1972

Selected Poems, 1970-1972, Thomas John Hill

English Language and Literature ETDs

You see, there was this kid about my age, and we were sitting on my driveway in Cupertino, California, and all of a sudden like he springs it on me: "There ain't no Santa Claus." Well, you can imagine what something drastic like this does to an impressionable kid barely out of diapers. I turned to poetry.

A Gold Dream In The Blue Mountains: A Study Of The Chinese Immigrants In The John Day Area, Oregon, 1870-1910, Chia-Lin Chen Sep 1972

A Gold Dream In The Blue Mountains: A Study Of The Chinese Immigrants In The John Day Area, Oregon, 1870-1910, Chia-Lin Chen

Dissertations and Theses

More than one hundred years have passed since the Chinese laborers first landed in this country in the mid-nineteenth century. Yet their history remains cloudy. This phenomenon is quite understandable if one considers the facts that most of the laborers were illiterate, did not have the ability, and never intended, to speak for themselves. It is true that many scholarly works have been published, but few were written by Chinese historians. As a matter of fact, Chinese scholars are unaware that a small number of their countrymen played a strange, pitiful role in American history. The published works reflect the …

The Archetype Of Woman In The Theatre Of Jean Giraudoux., Elisabeth Josephine Price Aug 1972

The Archetype Of Woman In The Theatre Of Jean Giraudoux., Elisabeth Josephine Price

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

I had begun to re-read Giraudoux for pleasure, remembering that when I was first introduced to his works in class, I had been impressed by the quality of the heroines he presented. Upon second reading of his theatre, I was struck by the fact that his heroines did not serve in a complementary role to the hero, as so often is the case, but were presented as entities of their own. Because there is a revolution taking place in our culture over the role of woman, I thought that it would be interesting to investigate Giraudoux's concept of woman. In …

Johann Adam Moehler: The Method Of Historical Theology, Christina Maria Crose Aug 1972

Johann Adam Moehler: The Method Of Historical Theology, Christina Maria Crose

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis is a study of Johann Adam Moehler's critical theology as an achievement in the nineteenth century's quest for a historical methodology. As the first Catholic theologian to apply a critical-historical analysis to the development of doctrine, Moehler is important as both the theologian and as a German historian.

As the theologian, Moehler's efforts to discover the essential meaning of Christian doctrine led him to conclude that doctrine develops within a human context of experience, namely, the Catholic Church. This development of doctrine is possible given the organic nature of the Christian community and its relationship to the divine. …

Frauenliebe Und Leben, Rose I. Bolstad Aug 1972

Frauenliebe Und Leben, Rose I. Bolstad

All Master's Theses

The song cycle, Frauenliebe und Leben, composed by Robert Schumann to a text by Adelbert von Chamisso, is particularly effective when the complete cycle is performed. This author, performing and studying the cyrcle, found that the piano accompaniment frequently moves independently of the vocal line, though it is an integral part of the cycle. The rhythmic patterns are designed to bring out the expressive quality of the text. Harmonic devices include extensive use of chromatic alterations, irresolution of chords, and free modulation. Finally, the vocal interpretation requires a singer with considerable poetic sensitivity.

Senator Albert J. Beveridge And The Politics Of Imperialist Rationale, Leone B. Little Aug 1972

Senator Albert J. Beveridge And The Politics Of Imperialist Rationale, Leone B. Little

Graduate Thesis Collection

This thesis is an unbiased attempt to look a Senator Albert Jeremiah Beveridge, a man who made history in his own time in his own way. Moreover, this thesis attempt to objectively present Senator Beveridge in the context of the era in which he lived as a generating force in America's colonial adventure at the turn of the century.

Senator Albert J. Beveridge, a Hamiltonian nationalist by inheritance, believed in a strong central government. Furthermore, he believed that the end of government should be the gaining of power and material forces, redeeming the redeemable nations of the world and subjugating …

The Nixon "Shocks": Implications For Japan's Foreign Policy In The 1970'S, Richard Douglas Partch

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis examines the implications that the Nixon “shocks” may have on Japan’s foreign policy. The data used consisted of books, articles, periodicals, government publications and newspapers. Examined were such important factors as: the attitudes of the political parties in Japan on foreign policy questions, the rapid rise of the Japanese economy and the implications this has had on Japan's relations with other countries, and the question of Japan's possible remilitarization, both in conventional and nuclear terms. In addition, Japan's relations with the other three Great Powers in Asia, (China, the Soviet Union and the United States), are also studied. …

Der Gebrauch Des Todesmotivs In Den Deutschen Poemata Von Paul Fleming, Paul Ancil Wolf Jul 1972

Der Gebrauch Des Todesmotivs In Den Deutschen Poemata Von Paul Fleming, Paul Ancil Wolf

Dissertations and Theses

In the Deutsche Poemata the word Tod and its variant forms appear in over 130 different poems. The word may appear more than once in the same poem. Despite the frequency of this word, its use has not previously been researched in depth. Secondary sources fall into five basic categories:

  1. the use of the word Tod is ignored completely;
  2. its use may be isolated to borrowings from Roman Literature;
  3. its use is Petrarchan;
  4. if comprehensible at all, it is an expression of Fleming's Christian philosophy of nature;
  5. Fleming's use of the word is typical for the entire Baroque era.

The American Dream: A Study Of The Beliefs, Possibilities, And Problems Inherent In The American Dream As Dramatized In The Lives And Writings Of Major American Authors, Robert Glen Deamer Jul 1972

The American Dream: A Study Of The Beliefs, Possibilities, And Problems Inherent In The American Dream As Dramatized In The Lives And Writings Of Major American Authors, Robert Glen Deamer

American Studies ETDs

This is an innovative, interdisciplinary dissertation devoted to achieving new perspectives on that cluster of indigenous American myths known as the American Dream. My purpose is not to analyze, or to philosophize or to pontificate about, these myths, but rather to dramatize them: to show that they are an essential part of our history and cultural heritage, as is to be seen most cogently in the lives and writings of our major authors. I have, however, at no point shirked the fact that the writing of such a study involves a moral as well as an intellectual commitment: in brief, …

Daniel Defoe And The Position Of Women In Eighteenth Century England: A Study Of Moll Flanders And Roxana, Joan Cavallaro Foster Jul 1972

Daniel Defoe And The Position Of Women In Eighteenth Century England: A Study Of Moll Flanders And Roxana, Joan Cavallaro Foster

English Language and Literature ETDs

From his earliest days as a journalist, Daniel Defoe had been sympathetic toward women. This dissertation begins with a discussion of eighteenth century milieu which influences the non-fiction, and finally focuses on the gradual emergence of Defoe as artist. The Puritan-rationalist tradition helps account for Defoe's attitudes toward courtship, marriage, and the role of women. Analysis of the non-fiction shows that Defoe continually stressed reasonable action and that his tone became shriller as his pleas for reform were ignored. In addition, the later non-fiction, particularly Religious Courtship and Conjugal Lewdness, employs novelistic techniques which finally are culminated in Moll Flanders …

Jurgen Moltmann's 'Theology Of Hope:' A Brief Purport, Rod Crowell Jul 1972

Jurgen Moltmann's 'Theology Of Hope:' A Brief Purport, Rod Crowell

Honors Theses

This "brief purport" began as a critique In the best of intentions, however, zeal quickly outran intelligence, and the need to get a firm grip on the thought of Jurgen Moltmann became tantamount to producing anything at all. The strange new territory of dialectical theology, coupled with the added handicap of formulating and answering my own questions, forced reconsideration of this project's direction and purpose.

The Female Warrior In The Renaissance Epic, Phillip Elliott Parotti Jul 1972

The Female Warrior In The Renaissance Epic, Phillip Elliott Parotti

English Language and Literature ETDs

In spite of much critical opinion to the contrary, the major female warriors in the renaissance epics are not reincarnations of the classical Amazons: minor similarities between the Amazons and the renaissance maiden-knights do exist. On the whole, however, the Amazoniar1 theory is inadequate because it unites the unique charm and individuality of the female knights with sterile Amazonian ferocity, a combination which their warm nobility transcends and denies. Instead, the female warriors in the renaissance epics owe their complex mystique to the literary and intellectual traditions surrounding the union of Mars and Venus.

Often interpreted as comic and lasc1vious, …

Light After Light Well Us'd: The Epic Conclusion Of Paradise Lost, Hans-Peter Michael Eller Jul 1972

Light After Light Well Us'd: The Epic Conclusion Of Paradise Lost, Hans-Peter Michael Eller

English Language and Literature ETDs

Current readers of Paradise Lost still question whether the content of Books XI and XII provides a conclusion which is integrated artistically with the prior books of the poem. Through an analysis of the thought, the character, and the plot of the last two books, this study directs itself to demonstrate three points. One, Michael's consoling revelation is of primary significance for the meaning or thought that it imparts. Two, the effect of this thought on Adam is the instruction or reformation of his character to the extent that he is able to choose and act, and, hand in hand …

The Role Of Metaphor In Cognition:Self-Reference, Iconicity, And Simple Natures., Charles Jessup Harriman Jul 1972

The Role Of Metaphor In Cognition:Self-Reference, Iconicity, And Simple Natures., Charles Jessup Harriman

Philosophy ETDs

Since Aristotle's time a close connection has been recognized between metaphor and cognition. The connection can be explained if the process of understanding is metaphorical. Such an explanation involves self-reference in two ways. First, the explanation will necessarily apply to itself. Second, metaphor, because it creates significance, must include directions for its own interpretation. Self-reference has been held to result in paradox or nonsense.

Self-referential inconsistency is a problem only if meaning is determinate. Theories of determinate meaning arc based on object-reference, or propositional equivalence. Both bases are shown to be unsatisfactory, and a non-referential theory of meaning based on …

A Critical Edition Of El Jardin De Falerina By Francisco De Rojas Zorilla, Antonio Coello Y Ochoa, And Pedro Calderon De La Barca, With Introduction And Notes., Robert Rudolf Bacalski

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

El jardín de Falerina, the producto of a joint effort by Frarncisco de Rojas Zorrilla, Antonio Coello, and Pedro Calderón de la Barca, represents a type of play that a high degree of popularity during the seventeenth century, the comedia de espectáculo y fantasia, derived, in part, from the romances of chivalry, and partly from the Italian epic poems, Orlando Furioso, by Lodovico Ariosto, and Orlando Innamorato, by Mateo Maria Boiardo.

Dated c. 1629, the comedia was privately performed on January 13, 1636 by the company of Tomás Fernández before Phillip IV and his court. There is no indication that …

The Influence On Contemporary American Crafts, Martha Dawson Newfield Jul 1972

The Influence On Contemporary American Crafts, Martha Dawson Newfield

Art & Art History ETDs

All the art forms have undergone much ferment in the Twentieth Century. The ferment can be attributed, at least in part, to many radical changes in the nature of our society, such as, advances in technology and the effects of the mass media. These advances have had a particular effect on contemporary crafts since the crafts have always been intricately tied up with technical process. Often the result has been a basic change in the statement, form, and material of the craftsmen. The changes we see evidenced today in the crafts had their beginnings in the Industrial Revolution. Therefore, men …

A Study Of Some Lucan Parables In The Light Of Oriental Life And Poetic Style, Kenneth Ewing Bailey Jul 1972

A Study Of Some Lucan Parables In The Light Of Oriental Life And Poetic Style, Kenneth Ewing Bailey

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

Throughout the history of the church the parables of Jesus have received considerable attention from biblical interpreters. Yet the cultural milieu and the poetry of the parables are aspects of parabolic studies that have not been adequately treated. The culture reflected in the dominical parables is that of first century Palestine. While the externals of the Palestinian scene pertinent to the parables have been analyzed with precision, the internal aspects of personal relationship and attitude have been imprecisely discerned. A more precise delineation of the Oriental culture that informs the text of four major Lucan parables is the first task …

An Analysis Of The Structure And Traditions Of Zechariah 7 And 8, John Henry Miller Jul 1972

An Analysis Of The Structure And Traditions Of Zechariah 7 And 8, John Henry Miller

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

The problem to which this dissertation shall be addressed is the lack of a methodologically consistent investigation of Zechariah's possible indebtedness to and adaptation of Israel's heritages the failure of most scholars to analyze correctly the structure of Zechariah 7-8 (and to relate chapters l through 6 to them); and the absence of a careful delineation of the purpose for which Zechariah integrated tradition and structure in proclaiming his message to post-exilic Judah. Many scholars have paid no heed whatsoever to material from Israel's heritage which may be in Zechariah 7-8. Those who have made such studies have had either …

To Revitalize The Flaccid Garden : A Study Of Milton's Paradise Regained, Daniel Clyde Bartges Jul 1972

To Revitalize The Flaccid Garden : A Study Of Milton's Paradise Regained, Daniel Clyde Bartges

Master's Theses

By 1654, Milton had partaken of misery, neglect, frustration, poverty; temptation, and disillusionment, as do all men; and it was his hope to "justify" (actually to "explain" since, to Milton, God's "ways" do not lend themselves to mortal justification) these plights to his fellow man. He shared the troublesome question of the Puritans: why is there evil in a world created by a beneficent God? A sincere Christian, he hoped to find a solution to this religious embarrassment through Biblical interpretation and subsequent enlightenment.

It is my belief that Paradise Regained constitutes Milton's most concentrated effort toward solving this baffling …

The Glasgow Paradox : A Study Of Ellen Glasgow's Sad Ladies, Frank Alexander Lovelock Jul 1972

The Glasgow Paradox : A Study Of Ellen Glasgow's Sad Ladies, Frank Alexander Lovelock

Master's Theses

This study intends to examine the career of Ellen Glasgow to determine how her personal philosophy is re flected in her work--and more especially in the characters of her long-suffering heroines (the sad ladies). It is hoped that the reader will come to understand how Glasgow moved from an initial phase of hope, through a period of pain and sorrow, and into a final time of despair .

For the purpose of this study, special emphasis has been placed. on the importance of the novels which were written after 1900. It is these novels that have come to be considered …

The Orderly Chaos Of Camilo José́ Cela, Christian William Hearon Jul 1972

The Orderly Chaos Of Camilo José́ Cela, Christian William Hearon

Master's Theses

Camilo José Cela, a philosopher and a consummate artist, has produced a series of works which individually and as a group, are a careful combination of idea and form. One work cannot adequately be understood unless it is also seen in context with Cela's other works. Each of the novels, short stories, essays and travel books, is united to the others by Cela' s overall existential philosophical outlook, and each rests on and at the same time illuminates the others.
