Responses Of Students To An Introduction To Literature Class Compared With Responses Of The Same Students To High School Literature Classes, Warren E. Ask

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to investigate responses of students to an Introduction to Literature class taught by Mr. Alden Hanson at the University of Northern Iowa during the spring term of 1972 compared with responses of the same students to their high school literature classes. Four sources of information were used to gather data for the investigation: 1) At the beginning of the semester Mr. Hanson assigned a paper in which the students discussed their previous experiences with literature in former English and literature classes, their feelings toward literature and the study of literature, the types of literature …

An Exploration In The Use Of Plastics And Ceramics For The Creation Of Combined Media Sculptures: An Abstract Of A Thesis, Peter J. Deneen Jan 1973

An Exploration In The Use Of Plastics And Ceramics For The Creation Of Combined Media Sculptures: An Abstract Of A Thesis, Peter J. Deneen

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This thesis is a result of the creation of sculptures combining the media of clay and polyester resin. The malleable and earthly qualities of clay, juxtaposed with the controlled and polished forms of the cast plastic was my major interest. Light reflecting and refracting through the plastic is complemented by the light-absorbing qualities of fired, unglazed clay.

Nature As A Reintegrating Force In Shakespeare's Cymbeline, Sydney M. Harrison Jan 1973

Nature As A Reintegrating Force In Shakespeare's Cymbeline, Sydney M. Harrison

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Shakespeare's Cymbeline reveals throughout, in its characters, plot and imagery, the reintegrating and regenerating influences of Nature. The entire play is dominated by Nature--birds, trees, flowers, mountains, streams and other natural elements. The characters are either naturally good or naturally bad; and while the good characters survive and repent of their erring, the bad characters die, as a result of their own evil, absolutely unregenerate. Nature in the play is thus seen as an active force which works both on and through the characters, who at times seem quite passive. In order to illustrate the manifestations of Nature, the poet …

Casting In Sterling Silver Using Models Made From Expanded Polystyrene, Ardith J. Hoff Jan 1973

Casting In Sterling Silver Using Models Made From Expanded Polystyrene, Ardith J. Hoff

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this thesis was to explore some of the possibilities and limitations of casting items in sterling silver using models made of various types of expanded polystyrene. The text includes historical and background information. Uses made of similar material by sculptors and in industry was discussed. The traditional lost-wax process which was adapted for use with the expanded polystyrene models was explained. It was not the intent of this study to show that expanded polystyrene should replace wax as a model making material nor that it is in any way a superior material to work with. On the …

Male Maturation In Selected Fiction Of Dylan Thomas, Gretchen Jacobson Jan 1973

Male Maturation In Selected Fiction Of Dylan Thomas, Gretchen Jacobson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Dylan Thomas wrote numerous short stories which reveal a completely different aspect of his writing and thinking from that of the highly symbolic, often existential nature of his poetry. He was able, in his short stories, to recall and tell the many-faceted feelings of a boy as he grows from early childhood into young adulthood. Along with the pleasures and hurts experienced, the mischief involved in, and the mistakes made in the process of maturing, Dylan Thomas reveals an underlying humorous, irreverent quality and attitude which seems to imply that the one who does not take himself too seriously can …

A Proposed Elementary And Secondary Public School Music Curriculum For The Grinnell-Newburg Community School District, Arthur William Emry

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The problem which was considered in this study was the need to develop an improved music curriculum for the Grinnell-Newburg Community Schools. The need for a vertically articulated curriculum was substantiated in a report by the North Central Association Evaluation Team which visited the Grinnell High School in March, 1973. The present music curriculum was investigated to determine the extent of the needs. Considered were the number of music courses offered, the written objectives of each course, the coordination of the courses by the teachers, the number of music teachers, and the projection of the school enrollment.

Chinese Attitudes And Knowledge Concerning Social Services: A Survey Of The Portland Chinese Community, Laura Lum Sing, Wendy Po-Kow Chan, Peter Tau-Ping Wang

Dissertations and Theses

The professional social worker needs to understand, wide social issues, including the culture and cultural background of minority persons and groups in the United States. One minority group with which social work has not much contact, and thus has little knowledge about, is the Chinese. Regarding professional social work knowledge about minority groups, the Chinese could be considered a "silent minority."

Thomas Hardy : A Study; Suffering, Human Will, And Grace In The Major Novels, Russell E. Borland Jan 1973

Thomas Hardy : A Study; Suffering, Human Will, And Grace In The Major Novels, Russell E. Borland

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis concentrates on human relations and the potential for man’s beatitude in Hardy’s major novels through an exploration of suffering, human will, evolutionary meliorism, and Grace, discussed in separate chapters. Chapter I is devoted to an introduction of the major elements of what is here called Hardy’s vision. Relying largely on Florence Emily Hardy’s The Life of Thomas Hardy and on references to some of the novels, a compilation of impressions is arranged into what seems to represent accurately the basic nature of the world and human relations in Hardy’s novels. The emphasis and the thrust of the vision …

A Reinterpretation Of The Oregon School Bill Of 1922 : The Concept Of The Common School In Progressive America., Stephen Louis Recken

Dissertations and Theses

The Oregon School Bill of 1922 would have required all school age children to attend public schools. Beginning as an initiative measure sponsored by the Scottish Rite Masons it was passed by the voters in the general election in the Fall of 1922. Shortly after its passage representatives of private and parochial schools began a court battle against the bill which ended in the United States Supreme Court. Affirming the decision of a lower court it declared the Bill to be unconstitutional. While public interest in the Bill was great during the campaign, it soon dwindled and by 1925 the …

The Immigration Act Of 1924: The Role Of The California Joint Immigration Committee, Donald Van Brocklin Jan 1973

The Immigration Act Of 1924: The Role Of The California Joint Immigration Committee, Donald Van Brocklin

Master's Theses

For at least forty years prior to the 1920's immigration crisis, there was some form of agitation to restrict or exclude either the Chinese, the Hindus, or the Japanese. The highest level of ferment occurred during the period 1920-l933. Activity in the early 1920's focused particularly on restricting all immigration. This was successfully enacted in the emergency federal legislation of 1921 and the Immigration Act of 1924 (popularly known as the Johnson Act) which placed permanent quotas upon all immigration and excluded Asians as permanent entrants into the United States.

The subject of this paper focuses on the course of …

Personality Similarities Between Female Alcoholics And Wives Of Alcoholics, Birgitta E. Qvistgaard-Welsh

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

It is hypothesized in this study that both alcoholic women and wives of alcoholics show, a) psychopathic tendencies and, b) a more highly feminine orientation to life than women in general. The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory "short form" was administered to twenty alcoholic women, twenty wives of alcoholics and twenty "normal" women picked at random from the general population. It was found that both alcoholic women and wives of alcoholics obtained significantly elevated psycho- pathic deviance (high Pd) scores. The Extradition And Trial Of Marcos PéRez JiméNez, 1959-1968: A Case Study In The Enforcement Of Administrative Responsibility, Judith Ewell Dec 1972

The Extradition And Trial Of Marcos PéRez JiméNez, 1959-1968: A Case Study In The Enforcement Of Administrative Responsibility, Judith Ewell

History ETDs

Many Latin American countries have suffered the results of modern piracy. Heads of state such as Marcos Pérez Jiménez in Venezuela have used their official positions to enrich themselves at the nation's expense; when overthrown, they live comfortably in exile on the proceeds of wealth earlier sent abroad. Democratic nationalists such as Rómulo Betancourt have called for the extradition of accused embezzlers and the surrender of their stolen wealth. Until the extradition of Marcos Pérez Jiménez from the United States in 1963, the principle of political asylum protected the refugees just as the principle of banking secrecy guarded their riches. …

Recognition And Reversal In Samson Agonistes, June Haig Simons Dec 1972

Recognition And Reversal In Samson Agonistes, June Haig Simons

English Language and Literature ETDs

My study approaches Samson Agonistes by way of the tradition of Renaissance divine drama. The Introduction surveys the criticism of Sam 􀂘 from 1930 to the present and establishes the character of interpretations produced by other approaches. Chapter I surveys Aristotle's Poetics as the conceptual framework within which both Milton and the divine dramatists worked, emphasizing recognition and reversal. Chapter II analyzes adaptation of recognition and reversal in selected plays of the divine drama, revealing development of a method of dramatization that encouraged depiction of inner, spiritual conflict without allegory; plays discussed are John the Baptist, Freewyl, Acolastus, Misogonus, Samson, …

New Wave Science Fiction Considered As A Popular Religious Phenomenon: A Definition And An Example, John Rothfork Dec 1972

New Wave Science Fiction Considered As A Popular Religious Phenomenon: A Definition And An Example, John Rothfork

American Studies ETDs

In the latter part of the 1960's the status of science fiction in America changed. Suddenly it ceased to be characterized as an insignificant formula-fiction. Its new importance rested on the seldom stated fact that it served a parareligious function during a decade when the common man discovered the "death of God." This was also the decade of Gemini and Apollo which saw the fulfillment of President Kennedy's promise to land a man on the moon and return him safely to earth. Thus science fact and fiction complemented each other to offer the common man a paradigm and ritual absorbing …

The Evolution Of A Black Writer: John A. Williams., Earl A. Cash Nov 1972

The Evolution Of A Black Writer: John A. Williams., Earl A. Cash

English Language and Literature ETDs

John A. Williams is a black writer who has been publishing non-fiction and fiction since 1960. All of his writings deal directly with the difficulties of being black in America. Commentary on Williams consists mainly of book reviews which place him in the shadows of James Baldwin and Ralph Ellison. Only recently, with the publication of The Man Who Cried I Am (1967) and The King God Didn't Save (1970), has the author received critical attention independent of his black predecessors. However, none of the critics takes into account both Williams' fiction and non-fiction. None gives an exhaustive appraisal of …

The Rhetoric Of Swift's "A Modest Proposal.", Nancy Jean Conrad Nov 1972

The Rhetoric Of Swift's "A Modest Proposal.", Nancy Jean Conrad

English Language and Literature ETDs

The recognition of Swift's rhetorical method in "A Modest Proposal" is an initial premise in most criticism of the essay. The satiric effect of the method is generally assumed; however, incomplete or inconclusive definitions of the essay's rhetorical structure have resulted in unsatisfying and unsatisfactory commentary on its satire--one critic finding it totally destructive, others failing adequately to account for the constructive purpose they claim to see. A formal rhetorical analysis of "A Modest Proposal," aimed at reconstructing the essay's argumentative structure and determining the structural bases for its effects, is the purpose of this paper. Because it is basically …

Das Motiv Der Einschränkung In Einigen Romanen Max Frischs, Leen J. Inghels Nov 1972

Das Motiv Der Einschränkung In Einigen Romanen Max Frischs, Leen J. Inghels

Dissertations and Theses

Because of his Swiss origin and background, Max Frisch has personally experienced the confinements imposed upon the individual by the expectations and demands of society as well as of a national government. He treats the theme of confinement in many of his works, but especially in his prose.

In agreement with the spirit of his generation, Frisch rejects the claim of society upon the individual to conform or to become an integral part of a collective. All human relations which impose upon his way of thinking or acting are rejected and regarded as "claims of imprisonment."

Marriage, class consciousness and …

Die Figur Der Rebellen Im Frühwerk Schillers: Die Räuber, Kabale Und Liebe, Don Carlos, Edward E. Heyen Nov 1972

Die Figur Der Rebellen Im Frühwerk Schillers: Die Räuber, Kabale Und Liebe, Don Carlos, Edward E. Heyen

Dissertations and Theses

Schiller's career as a dramatist spans more than two decades. Without too much difficulty, one observes that his plays are intimately related with one another. Particularly in the Storm and Stress period, his motives appear to be much the same: Schiller is an advocate of freedom, and the rights of men.

I maintain that the youthful rebel is a recurrent theme in Schiller's dramatic works and this can be shown by an analysis of four characters from three plays, followed by a summary of their similarities.

The rebellious youths of Schiller are Karl Moor (Die Räuber), …

The Pastor's Role And Suicide Bereaved, Michael Haar Nov 1972

The Pastor's Role And Suicide Bereaved, Michael Haar

Master of Divinity Thesis

This study will limit itself to the aftermath of suicide. Many aspects of suicide will not be dealt with. For example, it will not deal with the reasons why people kill themselves. These reasons would be included in studies of suicidology, the rational suicide, religion and suicide, philosophy and suicide, and the prevention of suicide. Nor is this paper a definitive study of the aftermath of suicide. Research in this part of the suicide event has only begun in the last few years. The newness of data on this subject is seen in the fact that until 1972 there was …

The Aesthetics Of Juan Carlos Onetti's Novel., Djelal Kadir Ii Sep 1972

The Aesthetics Of Juan Carlos Onetti's Novel., Djelal Kadir Ii

American Studies ETDs

The novelistic genre within the contemporary scene of world literature is clearly under the aegis of today's Latin American writers.

In the rise of the contemporary Latin American novel, Juan Carlos Onetti is a key figure, if not the key figure as the Peruvian novelist Mario Vargas Llosa claims. With Onetti, reality and a vision o( the world which comprise fiction are subjected to a consciously derived system of aesthetics for the first time in Latin America. The focus of this study is the nature of Onetti's aesthetics. Its scope attempts to some extent to see Onetti in the light …
