Gold Disks From The Sacred Cenote At Chichen Itza, Yucatán: Stylistic Analysis And Ethnohistorical Interpretation, Merideth Daniel Paxton May 1975

Gold Disks From The Sacred Cenote At Chichen Itza, Yucatán: Stylistic Analysis And Ethnohistorical Interpretation, Merideth Daniel Paxton

Art & Art History ETDs

During 1904-1911, Edward H. Thompson recovered some gold disks which have repousse designs showing military encounters from the Sacred Cenote at Chichen Itza. In addition, there have survived numerous carvings and frescoes at the site which depict scenes of armed conflict and surrender. The disks, frescoes, and carvings have been interpreted as events pertaining to the conquest of the Chichen Mayans by invading forces from the Toltec city of Tula in central Mexico. However, in recent years, influences from Mesoamerican sites other than Tula have been recognized in the art style of Chichen, and it is known that Toltec features …

A Report On The Image Construction And Presentation Processes And Their Implications Within My Work, Kent T. Rush May 1975

A Report On The Image Construction And Presentation Processes And Their Implications Within My Work, Kent T. Rush

Art & Art History ETDs

I have recently defined for myself methods of creating and presenting images. These methods became useful to me intuitively. Now, they have become consciously evident to me as procedures to which I can apply my creative efforts. Examination of these processes is an effort to economize and minimize wasted energies. My recent artistic activities have centered around the use of collage and printmaking. My sensitivity to these processes was directed toward inherent qualities which complimented the content of my images. Though I have always used collage, I had considered its use frivolous. I recognize now that it provides me with …

Wet Grounds, John Stascak May 1975

Wet Grounds, John Stascak

Art & Art History ETDs

This thesis is dealing with information about trying to extend sculptural possibilities. Sculpture is one of the most flexible areas in art today because it is moving from object ornamentation to situation of the mind. We are eliminating concerns for physical styles and are re-examining our thought process as artists. The thesis also explains two environmental art works which have been completed over the past two years. They are explained in three areas: Primal. Settings, Devices, and Communications.

An Analysis Of The Creative Process: From Metal Imagery To Enigmatic Form, Virginia Mae Crompton May 1975

An Analysis Of The Creative Process: From Metal Imagery To Enigmatic Form, Virginia Mae Crompton

Art & Art History ETDs

It is my purpose to create visual imagery of enigmatic, obscure, and mystical content through the development of clarity of form. I attribute the pursuit of three-dimensional form, first to the mysterious and lustrous qualities of metal as a medium of expression (or communication) and secondly, to a personal need to gain insight into the basic structural essence of the visual world. Extensive analysis of both man-made and natural organic form has provided a visual vocabulary from which to work. More importantly such an analysis has led to the discovery that form is not only composed of structure and a …

The Architecture Of Las Vegas, New Mexico, Louise Harris Ivers May 1975

The Architecture Of Las Vegas, New Mexico, Louise Harris Ivers

Art & Art History ETDs

"The Architecture of Las Vegas, New Mexico" relates historical and social conditions to the consequent construction of buildings. The purpose of this study is to see if the predominant architectural styles of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries prevalent in other parts of America also appear in Las Vegas, and to what extent the town was unique in its architectural habits. By comparing the buildings of Las Vegas to those in both eastern and western towns and cities as well as to the designs in the many architectural pattern books published during the period, one finds both similarities and …

A Report On A Thesis In Painting Entitled "Discussion On Recent Work", Jane Grace Cole May 1975

A Report On A Thesis In Painting Entitled "Discussion On Recent Work", Jane Grace Cole

Art & Art History ETDs

The work has been mainly in two media, oil and watercolour. Initially, there was difficulty finding an approach that would treat vegetative themes similarly in either medium. The watercolour paintings had several strong qualities that were not present in the oils. These strengths were the watercolour's great luminosity and dense design of transparent brush strokes, whose rhythmic structure was separate from the pictorial image. Therefore a series of experiments was made in the oil medium, to try and solve the problems of luminosity, transparency and brush stroke pattern which had arisen in the transferring of an idea from watercolour to …

Unification Versus Resistance: China's Reaction To Japanese Agression, 1931-1937, Kai-Hwa Ger May 1975

Unification Versus Resistance: China's Reaction To Japanese Agression, 1931-1937, Kai-Hwa Ger

History ETDs

The years from 1931 to 1937 were a crucial period in modern Chinese history. The National Government in Nanking faced the challenges of dissident Kuomintang elements and Communist subversion from within and Japanese aggression from without. Facing this unprecedented national crisis, the whole policy debate among the Chinese leaders centered around two alternatives: conciliation versus resistance. This is, therefore, a study of the composition and form of the internal pressures that gradually built up and converged on Chiang Kai-shek and which eventually forced him to change his policy toward Japan from conciliation to resistance. It is, in that sense, a …

Love And Alienation: The Sad, Dark Vision Of Carson Mccullers, Howard Dean Everett May 1975

Love And Alienation: The Sad, Dark Vision Of Carson Mccullers, Howard Dean Everett

English Language and Literature ETDs

Even though she died at the age of fifty, Carson McCullers' career as a writer spanned more than a quarter of a century. During that period, beginning in the middle 1930s, she gave up an early ambition to become a concert pianist and devoted her talents exclusively to writing. Her musical training, however, had a tremendous impact on her fiction. Not only did she draw from her experiences in and knowledge of the field of music; she also employed her musical background in the treatment of themes, in the handling of structure, and even in the development of her prose …

On My Photographs, Kevin Wrigley May 1975

On My Photographs, Kevin Wrigley

Art & Art History ETDs

The aim of this M.A. thesis is to explain the reasons which led to the creation of a group of photographs which was begun in December, 1973 and continues to the present date. The first section of the thesis is devoted to reforming a theory concerning the creative process which was proposed by Sigmund Freud in 1915. In this section the underlying motivation for the creation of art is briefly discussed in light of modern psychology, existential philosophy, and the theoretical writings of Conrad Fiedler and Herbert Read on the visual arts. The main points which are analyzed are: the …

The Dragon By The Road: An Archetypal Approach To The Fiction Of Flannery O'Connor, Charles J. Olson May 1975

The Dragon By The Road: An Archetypal Approach To The Fiction Of Flannery O'Connor, Charles J. Olson

English Language and Literature ETDs

The aim of this study is to use an archetypal approach to enlarge the reader's insights into the body of work under consideration by examining the social manners, or "part" (in this case the twentieth century American South as filtered through the consciousness of Flannery O'Connor) that contain the mystery of man's existence as it relates to the "whole" (in O'Connor's case, man's relation to a Christian God, but in a larger context, the relation of man to the universe). Archetypal criticism, as I define it, attempts to identify the recurring patterns of human consciousness as they find expression in …

Thematic Imagery In The Poetry Of AntóNio Nobre, Lana Frederica Moeller Harrigan May 1975

Thematic Imagery In The Poetry Of AntóNio Nobre, Lana Frederica Moeller Harrigan

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

In the poetry of António Nobre, essential themes are recurrent and interwoven, and there is a great degree of constancy in the images he creates for thematic purposes. Nature as it bears thematically on his poetry is the subject of Chapter I. The poet's predilect images from nature, the moon, the sea, trees, the wind, the seasons and time of day are all discussed with relation to theme. Chapter II deals with the imagery and thematics of color. White is by far the most frequently used, comprising 43.7% of all examples of color, and is thematically significant. The imagery associated …

General Wesley Merritt: Nineteenth Century Cavalryman, Don Edward Alberts May 1975

General Wesley Merritt: Nineteenth Century Cavalryman, Don Edward Alberts

History ETDs

Wesley Merritt's forty-five year career as a Regular officer in the United States Army was both significant and unusual. He graduated a year before the Civil War broke out, and he served with distinction during that conflict and during the "Indian Wars" that followed. As he neared retirement age at the end of the nineteenth century, America's interest in overseas expansion brought Merritt once again into action during the Spanish-American War.

Merritt left no body of personal papers or correspondence, and his official reports and correspondence, as well as published and unpublished accounts of officers and men who served with …

Seemly And Due Order: The Significance Ceremony In The Poetry Of Robert Herrick, Patricia D. Campbell May 1975

Seemly And Due Order: The Significance Ceremony In The Poetry Of Robert Herrick, Patricia D. Campbell

English Language and Literature ETDs

Robert Herrick's use of ceremony in his poetry generally has been understood to be closely related to his artistry. Critics have attempted to show that ceremony gives ornament and even form to Herrick's lyric mode. However, ceremony has a more organic relationship to Herrick's ceremonial poetry than such an emphasis implies. Herrick's view of ceremony informs certain poems to the extent that it becomes e controlling metaphor of the kind that indicates a way of perceiving the world.

Byronic Heroes And Heroines: The Theme Of Love And Recurrent Imagery, Chanda D. Clary May 1975

Byronic Heroes And Heroines: The Theme Of Love And Recurrent Imagery, Chanda D. Clary

English Language and Literature ETDs

This thesis concerns a study of the Byronic hero and heroine, and the theme of love, along with supporting imagery. Included in the study are analyses of Childe Harold, The Giaour, The Bride of Abydos, The Corsair, Lara, Manfred, Cain, Sardanapalus, Beppo, and Don Juan.

The Byronic hero is found to be partly a stereotype and partly a complete hero comprised of masculine and feminine principles of behavior. Contrary to many critics' assertions, the Byronic hero does not stand alone, for he always has one true love who ties him to humanity.

The Byronic heroines have some similarities, but are …

Implications Of American Missionary Presence In 19th And 20th Century Iran, Linda Colleen Karimi May 1975

Implications Of American Missionary Presence In 19th And 20th Century Iran, Linda Colleen Karimi

Dissertations and Theses

American missionaries to Iran exerted little influence in the area of religion, rather their impact was in education and medicine. Two decisive factors involved in their success were the awakening of Iran to the advances of Western technology and the limited scope of indigenous opportunities in the fields of learning and medicine. Their work in Iran was, however, hampered by opposition from those elements wishing to retain the status quo. In spite of such reactions, they were able to maintain their positions in Iran for approximately one hundred years. It was the advent of the Pahlavi dynasty which initially limited …

The United States And The Territorial Integrity Of The Russian Empire: An Examination Of The Development Of An American Policy Toward Ukraine, Nov. 1917 - Dec, 1920, Michael J. Buryk

Theses and Dissertations

The period 1917-1920 has a special significance in the history of the Ukrainian nation. It witnessed a sisyphean effort on the part of the Ukrainian people to attain independent statehood. This attempt to secure sovereignity by a vital part of the former Russian Empire met with forceful opposition from within the land of the Tsars and from without. In order for Ukraine to stake her claim among the nations of the world, it was essential her that the various factions within her body politic coalesce so that strong allies could be included to support her cause.

Pauline Anthropology: The Old And New Man, Jerry Lee Cripe May 1975

Pauline Anthropology: The Old And New Man, Jerry Lee Cripe

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The purpose of this research project is to determine how the Pauline terms the "old man" and "new man" are to be interpreted and translated. Do these terms refer to the "old self" (unregenerated person) and "new self" (regenerated person) , or to the 0 old race" (as in Adam) and "new race" (as in Christ)? In addition to answering these questions, considerable attention is spent in determining what Paul means in Romans 6:6; that is, whether the crucifixion of the old man refers to the individual believer 1 s conversion (Romans 6:1 ff.) or to the accomplished fact of …

The Mission Enterprise Of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod In Brazil, Elroi Reimnitz

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

The purpose of this study is to examine the seventy years of the history of the IBLB from a missiological perspective. There are several historical issues and events in the IELB's development which must be questioned and analyzed critically. It is an historical description and an evaluation of the so-called missionary performance of the Missouri Synod during the period of 1900-1974.

The writer will give special attention to the following areas, which prompted the writing of this dissertation: (1) Row and why did the Missouri Synod begin work in Brazil? Was that work considered mission, or diaspora, or simply proselytism? …

1. History Of The Development Of The Violin 2. Construction Of The Violin 3. Repairs Of The Violin String Instruments, Carl David Nyman May 1975

1. History Of The Development Of The Violin 2. Construction Of The Violin 3. Repairs Of The Violin String Instruments, Carl David Nyman

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The origin of all stringed instruments is lost in the midst of time, and despite the most patient and laborious research on the part of famous savants, no positive information has as yet been furnished regarding this point . Knowledge of the subject is more or less conjectural, and all that has been definitely established is the existence of the predecessors of the violin - the English crewth, a six stringed bowed instrument which is conspicuous for its rectangular shape, which is strongly reminiscent of the Greek kithara; the rebec, an instrument in the shape of an elongated pear having …

The American Prison As Portrayed In Popular Motion Pictures Of The 1930'S, Ronald B. Querry May 1975

The American Prison As Portrayed In Popular Motion Pictures Of The 1930'S, Ronald B. Querry

American Studies ETDs

This examination of twenty-one popular motion pictures proceeds from the hypothesis that audiences tend to accept as true that part of a movie story which is beyond their experience. Early film portrayals of prisons can be shown to have been less than accurate in many cases, whereas some recent films, as well as what have been termed "post-Attica" writings, have begun to explode many of the myths surrounding America's penal institutions -- myths engendered by movies such as those examined in this study.

The aims of the research were to make a descriptive study of the screen portrayals of prisons …

An Analysis Of Form And Vision In Chekhov's Major Plays, Mary Moylan Oppenheimer May 1975

An Analysis Of Form And Vision In Chekhov's Major Plays, Mary Moylan Oppenheimer

Master's Theses

In his art Chekhov confronted and gave expression to the major questions of man's existence. It is the thesis of this paper that Chekhov saw the central fact and problem of life as that of displacement: that in life man frequently finds himself "out of place" either psychologically or physically (sometimes both) and that inevitably he is completely displaced by death.

L'Imagination - Une Triade - Dans A La Recherche Du Temps Perdu, Lucie Mclawhorn

Master's Theses

The Real Presence In The Lord's Supper A Comparative Study Of Hermann Sasse, Leiv Aalen, And Tom Hardt, Geir Hoaas May 1975

The Real Presence In The Lord's Supper A Comparative Study Of Hermann Sasse, Leiv Aalen, And Tom Hardt, Geir Hoaas

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Our objective is to portray the Real Presence under three aspects, namely Christology, Salvation for the individual, and the Function in the Church. As such it is a systematic endeavor to clarify the relation of the Real Presence to each of these areas. The two latter are necessarily dependent on the first. However, we are also limited in a historical sense, in that our study is primarily an analysis of these three relations as presented by the theologians we are investigating, Hermann Sasse, Leiv Aalen, and Tom Hardt. We do not, therefore, intend to give an independent and original contribution …

Escape In Thurber : From Delight To Delirium, Carol Richardson Boyko May 1975

Escape In Thurber : From Delight To Delirium, Carol Richardson Boyko

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

James Thurber (1894-1961) is the outstanding American literary humorist of the twentieth century, whose writing spans two periods of American humor: pre- and post-World War II. Pre-war humor is characterized by a debunking of traditional values: the sanctity of women and marriage, patriotism, hero worship, and the supremacy of common sense. The hero of this era is the victim, the slightly neurotic man who does not fit into high-pressured city life. Post-war humor moves from playfulness to bitterness, from misogyny to misanthropy, from man's displacement in inhuman society to man's displacement in the world.

The theme of escape in Thurber …

Jose Bernardo Gutierrez de Lara: The Forgotten Hero presents a picture of the most salient points of the life and activities of this Mexican patriot. In writing about this personage, the author proposes to reintroduce into history a man that has been forgotten by many historians. Gutierrez de Lara's accomplishments were extraordinary for the time in which he lived. Among these were a trip to Washington, made to secure aid for the Mexican independence, the capture of Bexar, the capital of Texas, and the establishment of a provisional government there. By undertaking these endeavors he achieved many firsts in the …

A force, never exceeding 1,200 in strength, commanded by Patrick Edward Connor, was assigned a geographic responsibility, the Military District of Utah.

Connor's California Volunteers established principal troop locations at Fort Churchill and Fort Ruby in Nevada, and at Camp Douglas and Fort Bridger in Utah Territory during mid-1862. Major actions were conducted against the Indians at the battle of Bear …

A History Of Mapleton, Utah To 1945, Ralph K. Harmer May 1975

A History Of Mapleton, Utah To 1945, Ralph K. Harmer

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Mapleton, a small rural Utah community located on the benchlands between Hobble Creek Canyon and Spanish Fork Canyon fifty miles south of Salt Lake City, was settled in the late 1860s and early 1870s by Springvllle and Spanish Fork families who built their homes on their individual farms. These families did not follow traditional Mormon settlement patterns with a City of Zion plat as their guide; their community grew along quite different lines. Its inhabitants never heard a "call" nor did they have their land alloted to them by their church.

The Latter-day Saint Ward, established on the bench In …

Recital Report, Robert Steven Call May 1975

Recital Report, Robert Steven Call

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

It was the purpose of the recital to afford the performer an opportunity of developing overall musicianship and gaining insight into the teaching of brass instruments through the preparation and performance of several pieces of varied musical styles.

The writer elected to perform on trombone, baritone horn, and tuba. Successful performances had been done on trombone and baritone horn prior to the preparation of the master's recital. However, the tuba was a new performance experience because serious study of the instrument had only covered about one year.

The writer was specifically concerned with the selection of literature suitable to the …
