Through Love To Death : The Structure Of Dante Gabriel Rossetti's The House Of Life, Michael Dennis Hughs Aug 1975

Through Love To Death : The Structure Of Dante Gabriel Rossetti's The House Of Life, Michael Dennis Hughs

Master's Theses

This study offers an explanation of the structure of Dante Gabriel Rossetti's The House of Life. It does not attempt to elevate Rossetti to a new position of pre-eminence among the Victorians or to make extravagant claims for h1s genius. What it tries to provide is a descriptive analysis or the poems taken together as a unit of meaning. No effort has been made to deal adequately with Rossetti's biography nor his output in the realm of painting. While these matters certainly have an important place in Rossetti studies, there is also a place for an intensive study of the …

The United States Military In The Cuban Missile Crisis, Frank Joseph Wikenheiser Jul 1975

The United States Military In The Cuban Missile Crisis, Frank Joseph Wikenheiser

Dissertations and Theses

One of the most significant events in the Cold War-dominated years of the 1950's and early1960's was the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. It not only has been reputed by most authorities as a major turning point in the Soviet Union-American struggle, but it dramatically illustrated the critical dimension of thermo-nuclear weapons in international relations. In addition, and of particular interest to one directly involved, it showed that firmness in policy and proper application of military power are key factors in obtaining favorable and peaceful settlements of international disputes.

The Congressional Decision To Build The Panama Canal: The Influence Of Senators John Tyler Morgan, Marcus Alonzo Hanna And Others, And The Role Of The Walker Report, Andrew Scott Merrifield

Dissertations and Theses

Throughout most of the modern history of the Western hemisphere, explorers, engineers and merchants have been interested in finding or building a waterway that would connect the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. By the early part of the sixteenth century most of these people had settled their attention on the Central American Isthmus. Several major commercial nations showed an interest in the project at one time or another, including France, Spain, Great Britain and the United States.

Serious attention to building a canal started in the late nineteenth century with two areas, southern Nicaragua and central Panama becoming the two most …

"Kubla Khan" And Its Critics, Allen Dale Widerburg Jul 1975

"Kubla Khan" And Its Critics, Allen Dale Widerburg

Dissertations and Theses

This paper evaluates the critical response to Samuel Coleridge's "Kubla Khan." In the Introduction I outline my critical approach, which attempts to see the relationships between parts of the poem, sources outside the poem and poet himself. In analyzing Coleridge's esthetics, I have come to the conclusion that the poem was the first of a new type of Romantic poem. The central structural principle of this type of poem is the use of illusion and the fragmented form, or the illusion of the fragmented form. Poems that fall within this esthetic frequently use the "vision within a dream" motif as …

Martin Luther's Concept Of The Church : Its Implications For The Layman, William W. Dean Jul 1975

Martin Luther's Concept Of The Church : Its Implications For The Layman, William W. Dean

Dissertations and Theses

This paper is a study of the relationship between Martin Luther's theology of the church and the practical development of the religious life of the church under his leadership, as this relationship relates to the active and passive roles of the layman in the church. The thesis question is: Did Luther hold a social prejudice against the lower classes and in favor of the upper class that caused him to modify or reinterpret his concept of the church in the course of his career?

United States Acquisition Of The Spanish Borderlands: Problems And Legacy, Ralph A. Rowley Jul 1975

United States Acquisition Of The Spanish Borderlands: Problems And Legacy, Ralph A. Rowley

History ETDs

Between 1803 and 1854 the United States expanded its continental boundaries to include virtually all the old Spanish Borderlands, an area comprising the Floridas, Southern Louisiana, Texas and the Southwest (New Mexico, Arizona, California and parts of Nevada, Utah and Colorado). Louisiana was acquired in 1803, followed by Florida in 1819, Texas in 1845, the Southwest in 1848, and the Gadsden Strip in 1854. Spain and Mexico were the unwilling donors of most of its territory and nursed bitter resentment toward the United States over their losses for the remainder of the nineteenth century.

Mexico transferred much of her resentment …

Zora Neale Hurston: A Non-Revolutionary Black Artist, Lillie P. Howard Jul 1975

Zora Neale Hurston: A Non-Revolutionary Black Artist, Lillie P. Howard

English Language and Literature ETDs

Zora Neale Hurston (1903-1960) was a black woman who rose from relative obscurity to become a noted novelist, folklorist, and anthropologist. Because more and more critics passed over her works for the more militant ones of "race conscious" black writers, however, Hurston was relatively ignored and neglected. While most other black writers were writing protest literature, Hurston was writing about individuals and the positive side of black folk life. Although she does not totally ignore racial issues, they are never major themes in her writings. Rather, most of her works speak for the affirmative side of life, for the fulfillment …

A Study In Literary, Social, And University History: The Life And Often Hard Time Of The New Mexico Quarterly, 1931-1969, David William Pugh Jul 1975

A Study In Literary, Social, And University History: The Life And Often Hard Time Of The New Mexico Quarterly, 1931-1969, David William Pugh

American Studies ETDs

The New Mexico Quarterly, perhaps best called a regional university little magazine, was begun by the University of New Mexico in 1931 and published thirty-eight volumes until it ended in 1969. The Quarterly went through six principal periods, alternating periods of regionalism with periods which tried other emphases. NMQ never found an editorial policy which was commercially successful, but its various policies almost always succeeded artistically. Further, the Quarterly's alterations are interesting responses to the literary, social and intellectual history of its time. Its birth, life, and death illustrate the changing nature of the University of New Mexico and, in …

America: A Region Of The Soul, James Williams Hutchinson Jul 1975

America: A Region Of The Soul, James Williams Hutchinson

American Studies ETDs

In the last decade of American life there has emerged a renewed interest in exploring the relationship between altered states of consciousness and what has traditionally been termed "religious experience." To a large extent, this interest appears to stem from a growing recognition that the modern scientific world view tends to be destructive, both of human life and values as well as of the natural environment. It has been suggested that a more spiritual world view based on an experiential awareness of transcendental realities is needed in order to counterbalance the current materialistic and mechanistic trend of American culture.

He Cast A Long Shadow: A Study Of The Life And Impact Of Walter Prescott Webb, Necah Stewart Furman Jul 1975

He Cast A Long Shadow: A Study Of The Life And Impact Of Walter Prescott Webb, Necah Stewart Furman

American Studies ETDs

This biography traces the development and impact of the famed historian, Walter Prescott Webb, from his humble beginnings on the West Texas plains to historian of international acclaim. Through interviews with relatives, professional associates, and investigation of personal papers in archival collections, a remarkable success story unfolds. His death in an auto accident March 8, 1963, meant not only the loss of a personal friend to many, but also the loss of a prize-winning author and visionary whose challenging ideas reflected concerns so vital to society that there were those who resolved that investigation of these ideas and their ramifications …

Sipapu: A Cultural Perspective, Paula Gunn Allen Jul 1975

Sipapu: A Cultural Perspective, Paula Gunn Allen

American Studies ETDs

This three-essay study examined European-American political and social treatment of Native Americans, and European-American interpretations of Native American literature. It proceeds from the hypothesis that the Euro-American conception of Native America differs greatly from the Native American's conception of himself. Recent examinations of the relations between European and Native Americans have revealed that the American treatment of aboriginal people was a consequence of basic European attitudes, rather than a reaction to Native American conduct. These same attitudes have colored literary studies just as they have colored all aspects of American-Native American relations.

The aims of the research were to study …

Away From Concord: The Travel Writings Of Henry Thoreau, Robert Sattelmeyer Jul 1975

Away From Concord: The Travel Writings Of Henry Thoreau, Robert Sattelmeyer

English Language and Literature ETDs

The familiar, and to an extent self-created, image of Henry Thoreau is that of a quintessentially inner-directed man. However, most of what he wrote for publication during his career was travel narrative--a popular and outer-directed genre. Travel narrative provided Thoreau a key structural principle for his prose; a vehicle for the expression of his most characteristic subjects, the engagement of consciousness with nature and society; and a controlling metaphor for his life's work in letters. This study is a generic and genetic examination of Thoreau's works in this mode.

Thoreau's apprenticeship in the traditional forms of poetry, criticism, and essay, …

A Contemporary Application Of The Parables Of Growth, Victor Raj Jul 1975

A Contemporary Application Of The Parables Of Growth, Victor Raj

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of our study is to look at the canonical text of the four parables of growth; namely, the Sower, the Mustard Seed, the Weeds among the Wheat, and the Automatic Action of the Soil. We will do so in order to interpret them for their application for us today. The second chapter is devoted to a textual exposition of these parables. In the third chapter some basic motifs from the parables of growth receive some further discussion with a view to finding the significance of these parables for the growth of the Church.

The point of the fourth …

Hegel And The Concept Of Religion In Greek Tragedy, Barbara Scot Jul 1975

Hegel And The Concept Of Religion In Greek Tragedy, Barbara Scot

Dissertations and Theses

A parallel can be drawn in intellectual development between ancient Greece and late eighteenth century Europe concerning the secularization of the religious myth. This parallel is illustrated in a literary mode in Greece and in a philosophical mode in Europe. In both historical situations the intellectual development of a society was posited in a delicate balance of religious mythical interpretation of human existence and in a growing assertiveness of the self-consciousness of the individual. A significant point of analogy is the similarity of the Greek tragedians' attempt to define man in relation to the gods and Hegel's formulation of a …

Kinesthetic Sculpture, Andy Ray Jork Jr. Jun 1975

Kinesthetic Sculpture, Andy Ray Jork Jr.

Art & Art History ETDs

The subject of my thesis is the attempted explication of the process involved in the conception, design, construction, and display of three pieces of sculpture which were specifically intended to be physically activated by the viewer. The term “kinesthetic” was adopted from an observer’s comment to describe this manipulation activity.

The three pieces of sculpture in the chronological order of their completion are: “Mantel Piece,” “Juvenile Detention Center,” and an untitled companion piece. A complete description of each of these sculptures is provided and photographs of them are included as illustrative figures.

The main problem common to all three of …

The American President As Legislative Leader: Historical Development Of The Role, Patricia Mathews Walhood Jun 1975

The American President As Legislative Leader: Historical Development Of The Role, Patricia Mathews Walhood

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis seeks to define the American President's role as legislative leader and to trace the origin and development of that role throughout the history of the office of the presidency. Presidents were not consistently active in this capacity until the middle of the twentieth century.

The first part of the thesis examines precedents set by strong presidents prior to and early in the twentieth century, as well as an important institutional change in the government, the creation of the Budget System, which smoothed the way for Presidential adoption of the tasks of legislative leader.

The middle sections of the …

The Creative Thought Process In Scientific And Artistic Problem Solving, James Michael Scott Jun 1975

The Creative Thought Process In Scientific And Artistic Problem Solving, James Michael Scott

Art & Art History ETDs

Herein is a discussion of creative thinking as it is manifested in scientific and artistic inquiry. Specifically, creativity is treated as a special kind of problem solving and is discussed as a mental process rather than an isolated event. The process consists of three phases: 1) preparation, 2) subconscious work, and 3) evaluation. These three periods are seen as essential characteristics of creative problem solving. The creative process consists of both conscious and unconscious mental activity. Primarily, the conscious work is carried on during the periods of preparation and evaluation, and the unconscious mental functions occur during the period referred …

Conversion And Culture Change In A Highland Maya Community, Judy Stomsvik Jun 1975

Conversion And Culture Change In A Highland Maya Community, Judy Stomsvik

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The traditional religion of the Tzotzil Indians of Chiapas, Mexico is a blend of ancient Maya and Spanish Catholic elements. Recently Protestant missionaries and lay workers have entered the area, with varying degrees of success. One of these evangelizing· movements has been carried out by members of the Seventh-day Adventist church, with a great deal of success in some areas.

Since conversion of individuals to Adventism results in culture change for these individuals in the area of world view, i.t should also have ramifications in other areas of the culture as well. The purpose of this research was to discover …

Eudora Welty : From "The Wanderers" To The Optimist's Daughter, Juli Ling Miller Jun 1975

Eudora Welty : From "The Wanderers" To The Optimist's Daughter, Juli Ling Miller

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The writings of Eudora A. Welty have been published since 1936. They include four collections of short stories and five novels. Although she is a highly anthologized southern writer and winner of several literary awards, serious criticism of her works has been limited to her early short stories or the regionalism of her novels.

The scope of this thesis includes a traditional analysis of "The Wanderers," a story in The Golden Apples (1949) collection which has received cursory study, as well as an analysis of her latest published novel, The Optimist's Daughter, (1972) which has yet to be studied by …

Lesbian Marriage, Sandi Parks May 1975

Lesbian Marriage, Sandi Parks

Dissertations and Theses

Research findings on marriage as a heterosexual institution were reviewed and research was carried out to determine if certain of them were applicable to lesbian "marriage" as well. Marriage was defined as a relationship in which two people have lived together with strong emotional and sexual involvement for a year or more. Subjects were volunteers from among women age 22 or older, who were childless, and who were involved in the women's movement, as well as their friends, lovers and husbands. There were 14 lesbian couples, 14 lesbians who had never been married and 6 lesbians who had been married …

A Shared Way Of Thinking: Johnson, Burke, Reynolds And Gibbon On Ethics, Politics And Aesthetics, Richard A. Friedberg May 1975

A Shared Way Of Thinking: Johnson, Burke, Reynolds And Gibbon On Ethics, Politics And Aesthetics, Richard A. Friedberg

English Language and Literature ETDs

Many people recall the Literary Club primarily as an assemblage of vigorous, if eccentric, talkers. Actually, the leading figures of the Club--Samuel Johnson, Edmund Burke, Joshua Reynolds, and Edward Gibbon--had much in common as reasoners. This does not mean that they agreed with each other on specific issues. It does mean that in three important areas of intellectual concern--politics, criticism, and morality--their way of approaching problems is similar.

The first section of the study treats the political reasoning of Burke, Johnson, and Gibbon. Its most important conclusions are that all three writers reacted against the application of speculative, a priori …

Effects Of Colors, Noun Position, And Verb Proximity On The Acquisition Of Direct Objects, Ronald M. Dohr May 1975

Effects Of Colors, Noun Position, And Verb Proximity On The Acquisition Of Direct Objects, Ronald M. Dohr

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study is to determine if colors can differentially be applied as teaching tools for pre-school children. Previous studies have shown that pre-school children are easily distracted in language development by external stimulation. Studies have also shown that brighter color hues can arouse and facilitate performance of subjects on given tasks. This experiment is an attempt to measure performance of word manipulation by usage of colors. Three independent variables have been selected as stimuli to measure direct object acquisition. Measurement of color, noun position, and verb proximity will be assessed in connection with subject performance on given …

Freedom And Necessity In The Development Of Marx's Thought, Isa Maria Leib May 1975

Freedom And Necessity In The Development Of Marx's Thought, Isa Maria Leib

Dissertations and Theses

I have considered Freedom and Necessity as fundamental literary and philosophical concepts in Karl Marx's early writing.

All Marx quotations are my own translations; I did this because I discovered that many English translations were rendered in such a way that they did not convey basic literary structures which were very important to a clear comprehension of Marx's thought.

The opening pages of this article are a necessary but brief discussion of words, which are specifically: Necessity, Freedom, and History. As these three words are the life and breath of Marx's thought, an observation of their meanings and history, in …
