The Development Of The Soviet Merchant Marine, Wayne L. Chadick Apr 1975

The Development Of The Soviet Merchant Marine, Wayne L. Chadick

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The commercial fleet of the Soviet Union serves several purposes. It is an economic tool used to conserve scarse hard currency and even to earn it. The merchant marine has been a viable political tool. It has carried the influence and the doctrine of the USSR to many countries of the world. This has not been a recent use, but was done as far back as 1936 during the Spanish Civil War. Merchant shipping also supports the Russian Navy. This paper traces the development of the Russian Merchant Marine under the Soviet regime, and it discusses why and how this …

Music Listening Guide: A Conceptually Arranged Index Of Listening Examples For An Elementary Music Program, Gail R. Springer

The Economic Development Of The Hispanic California Missions, Robert Reid Archibald Apr 1975

The Economic Development Of The Hispanic California Missions, Robert Reid Archibald

History ETDs

The years from 1769 to 1821 witnessed the beginnings, development and golden age of the Franciscan missions of Hispanic Alta California. Since that time the missions have been alternately romanticized and vilified. Particularly in the economic sphere they have been accused of depriving their military counterparts and civilians of needed sustenance and of hoarding wealth for their own advantage. Authors have described the relationship between military and mission as one of almost constant conflict while overlooking broad areas of cooperation and agreement. Finally, no analysis has ever been made of the economic processes carried out by the missions nor of …

Melchizedek, The Man And The Tradition, Ann Nicholls Madsen Apr 1975

Melchizedek, The Man And The Tradition, Ann Nicholls Madsen

Theses and Dissertations

The common elements which emerge from this study are: Melchizedek was a priest-king, ruling a small city-state and presiding over the cult. He lived among a people far advanced from the primitive. There is no consensus among scholars concerning the meaning of his name but "Sedeq (a name for God) is my King" is a possible translation. Melchizedek's city-state was named Salem and of the four plausible geographical locations postulated, the Salem-Shechem theory leaves fewer problems. Abraham and Melchizedek worshiped the same God who was known by several names, among which were 'El 'elyon, God Most High and Yahweh. All …

Imre Nagy And The First Phase Of The Hungarian Revolution, William B. Liverman Apr 1975

Imre Nagy And The First Phase Of The Hungarian Revolution, William B. Liverman

History Theses & Dissertations

This thesis is an analysis of the relationship between the national communists and "Moscow emigres" in the government of Hungary, between the Hungarian government and that of the Soviet Union, and between the Hungarian government and the various insurgent groups in Budapest and the Hungarian provinces immediately preceding and during the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. An attempt is made to evaluate the effect of each of these forces on the course of revolution and its final outcome. The study is based on traditional sources and on interviews with leading figures involved in the revolution.

The Norman Conquest In English Historical Thought, Ann Gutting Mercer Apr 1975

The Norman Conquest In English Historical Thought, Ann Gutting Mercer

History Theses & Dissertations

Each chapter in British historiography has produced a diversity of opinion concerning the impact of the Norman Conquest (twelfth century contemporary, Tudor, Stuart, nineteenth century, twentieth century). The closer one comes to modern times the broader and more heated the controversies become. This paper discusses the appropriate works of the prominent historians from each major period. The question is asked: Was the Norman succession merely one event in the constitutional development of England or did it transform the English way of life?

Benjamin Butler And The Bureau Of Negro Affairs In Tidewater, Virginia, 1861-1865, Steven Frank Petrine

History Theses & Dissertations

The subject of this paper is the development of governmental policies toward the freedmen especially labor policies and the establishment of schools and relief programs for the freedmen in the tidewater area of Virginia during the Civil War. The first extensive school system for the freedmen was launched in this area, and it was in this area in November, 1863 that General Benjamin F. Butler created a central authority for the administration of Freedmen's Affairs. Government farms were also established in the area for those freedmen needing care and guidance while those deemed capable of managing their own plots were …

Mob Violence In Prerevolutionary Norfolk, Virginia, Edward A. Smyth Apr 1975

Mob Violence In Prerevolutionary Norfolk, Virginia, Edward A. Smyth

History Theses & Dissertations

This study examines mob violence in pre-Revolutionary Norfolk, Virginia. Four chronologically distinct mob incidents are considered: the Arundel riot of 1762, the Stamp Act riot of 1766, the impressment riot of 1767, and the smallpox riots of 1768-1769. Emphasis is placed on the identification of mob participants and the motives for their involvement. Quantitative methods are used to assess the degree of participation by influential Norfolk residents in mass violence.

Statistical evidence reveals that an unusually large number of rioters were influential Norfolkians. Motivation for their participation is attributed to English Parliamentary decrees and the growing economic and political influence …

Northerners In The Reconstruction Of Hampton, Virginia, 1865-1870, Gladys A. Blair Apr 1975

Northerners In The Reconstruction Of Hampton, Virginia, 1865-1870, Gladys A. Blair

History Theses & Dissertations

The 1870 census for Hampton, Virginia indicated that out of the 8,303 total population, 176 were foreign born and 672 came from states other than Virginia. A logical explanation for the presence of the large number of northerners is that they were carpetbaggers who had come South after the war to take advantage of the prostrate southerners. This paper analyzes the Yankee population in Hampton, Virginia in the period following the Civil War. It discusses the origins of the northerners, their reasons for coming to Hampton, their occupations, the Hampton political situation, and the impact the northerners made on the …

A Study Of Christian (Systematic) Theology Books Used As Texts In A. T. S. Schools, Richard Alvin Johnson Mar 1975

A Study Of Christian (Systematic) Theology Books Used As Texts In A. T. S. Schools, Richard Alvin Johnson

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

In an era today of rapid growth in knowledge, the average contemporary man has forgotten the Creator, applauding only the creations of his own mind. It has been and is the task of theologians, whether pastors or professors,. to keep alive the option of belief in the reality of God--to remind man to clap. In the theologian's field of knowledge, as in all arenas of thought, literary works have exploded, bombed, and even splintered in a mind-expanding wilderness of information. Access to this knowledge and its availability to theologians was the impetus for the following study.

Role Of The Minister's Wife, Sosamma Abraham Mar 1975

Role Of The Minister's Wife, Sosamma Abraham

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Excerpt: "There are only a few references made to the minister's wife in the Bible. But there is no question about her existence. Both Matthew and Luke refer to the mother-in-lav! of Peter. Paul, in writing to Timothy, asserts that the minister is "the husband of one \.rife" (I Tim.3:2). Paul also says that the deacons' wives are to "be grave, not slanderers, sober, and faithful in all things: (I Tim. 3:11).

The one reason for the fewness of Biblical references to the minister's wife is the fact that at this early period the ministry had not become professionalized.1 That …

Reconciliation And Reunion, Myron K. Jordan Feb 1975

Reconciliation And Reunion, Myron K. Jordan

Dissertations and Theses

Throughout the period of the American Revolution, Great Britain pursued a policy of reconciliation and reunion toward its North American colonies. While this was but one of the several policy alternatives open to British leadership, it was always an element of British strategy toward the colonies from 1775 to 1783.

This thesis follows the evolution of reconciliation and reunion in the final days of crisis in 1774-1775. It seeks to define its development during the war itself, and especially during the abortive American Peace Commission of 1778. By tracing this policy from its emergence through to the peacemaking in 1782-1783, …

The Relationship Between The Holy Spirit And Baptism In The New Testament, Paul Peckman Feb 1975

The Relationship Between The Holy Spirit And Baptism In The New Testament, Paul Peckman

Master of Divinity Thesis

Although a thorough critique of Dunn's position cannot be attempted here, this paper will attempt to defend the opposite contention, namely that the Holy Spirit and Baptism are uniquely, indissolubly, and necessarily connected in the New Testament. Lampe's comments in regard to the Pauline evidence is cogent at this point: "Pauline thought affords no ground whatever for the modern theories which seek to effect a separation in the one action and to distinguish a 'Spirit-Baptism' and a 'water-Baptism,' not as the inward and outward parts of one sacrament, but as independent entitities."

National Efficiency And Social Planning In Britain, 1914-1921, Norman Richard Eder Feb 1975

National Efficiency And Social Planning In Britain, 1914-1921, Norman Richard Eder

Dissertations and Theses

Traditionally, improvements in the quality of life in Britain resulted from the temporary fusion of sometimes opposite interests which spurred Parliamentary action. Therefore, reform was rarely a party issue. Each reform question was treated separately and never as a part of a body of similar measures. Individuals were free to support or oppose particular reforms according to their own interests and motivations. The result of this lack of strong consistent reformist sentiment was a pattern of piece-meal legislative action with a notable absence of comprehensive social planning. The First World War, however, brought new challenges to British society. As the …

Truman's Election In 1948, Mary Peter Kump Feb 1975

Truman's Election In 1948, Mary Peter Kump

Dissertations and Theses

You can't judge a book by its cover. The cliche may be trite, nonetheless it is applicable to Harry s. Truman. The feisty Missourian wrested greatness from the hands of his challengers who would have denied it to him because of his background. His lack of a college degree seemed to rankle the press, and as far as they were concerned disqualified him as President of the United States.

Based largely on contemporary accounts, this thesis traces the color and drama of Truman's 1948 campaign. In order to appreciate fully the triumph of the President’s victory, it was necessary to …

Project--Disciple-A Model For Parish Youth Ministry, Thomas Hirsch Feb 1975

Project--Disciple-A Model For Parish Youth Ministry, Thomas Hirsch

Master of Divinity Thesis

This study is written to assist youth leaders and adult counselors in working out models for ministry among young people in the parish. As this model develops it will become obvious that its practical application is limited to the parish medium, although many of the principles underlying its structure may indeed find adaptation elsewhere. To further aid the reader, a rather extensive bibliography is included also. With such an index of available resources, the creative youth leader or adult counselor will have an excellent platform from which to begin youth ministry.

The Resonant Environment, Frank Joseph Rolla Jan 1975

The Resonant Environment, Frank Joseph Rolla

Art & Art History ETDs

An environment is defined by the energies introduced or naturally occuring in its space, and I intend to show that the energy of sound has the capacity to develop and control space as effectively as any visual element. Sound and environment are described in the opening sections of the paper as are certain ways in which sound may function in a physical manner. These descriptions are further supported by consideration of the components of sound, like vibration, and by presenting various activities of sound I have discovered in my musical devices. These activities are resonant conduction, contact vibration, and sympathetic …
