Hierarchy And The Self In The Trilogy Of C. S. Lewis, Connie R. Phillips
Hierarchy And The Self In The Trilogy Of C. S. Lewis, Connie R. Phillips
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
C.S. Lewis' view of the individual in a hierarchical universe is not simply the restatement of a static medieval ideal. In his trilogy he presents the unfolding of the hierarchical view of the universe, with emphasis on time and the growth of the self into a model of universal reality.
If Lewis be found guilty of "historicism," it must be in his belief that man and nature are losing their neutrality, that good and evil are becoming more separated, more distinct. The growing bifurcation and consequences of two opposing views of the individual form a tension in Lewis' work. Much …

The Relationship Of The Protestant Episcopal Church In Virginia With The Negro Slaves 1830 To 1860: Success Or Failure?, Elisabeth Evans Wray
Master's Theses
Some conclusions may be drawn as to the success—or failure--of the Church's relationship with the slaves in nineteenth-century Virginia by constructing a narrative of the general attitudes held by the Episcopal Church (the bishops and other clergy and the laity) and the actions resulting from them. The years from 1830 to 1860 are the most fruitful period of the century in revealing through sermons, letters, newspapers, and books the Church's ideas concerning the institution of religious instruction for the slaves and their place in the life of the Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Virginia. Because many of the attitudes …

Graduate Recital, Donna Gatlin Davis
Graduate Recital, Donna Gatlin Davis
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Preparation for the graduate recital provides the Master's candidate an opportunity to exercise a variety of musical skills. Choosing the best possible program requires not only a working knowledge of the available repertory, but a personal assessment of the particular voice with its characteristic strengths and weaknesses. The final selection must reflect a fine balance of material difficult enough to provide a musical challenge and material with which a singer can feel comfortable in communicating.
Working toward the performance involves both intellectual preparation through research and physical preparation through vocal conditioning. It is not enough to anticipate vocal difficulties and …

Masters Recital, Deanne Gardner Johnsen Vanderford
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
If music is indeed that "eternal essence" man claims it is, it is through the voice and sinew of the living that it receives its' immortality. Through the living student, performer, listener, or critic, it is transformed from the silent sheets of past symbols, channelled through the present feeling and being of one's intellect and knowledge, interpolated into meaningful messages, and once perceived, given again to the timeless sounding halls of tomorrow's memory.
It is through the choosing, the sifting, the chewing, and the internalizing of one's unique vehicle of capability that material is chosen, studied, and rendered. This paper …

Modernization In The Virginia General Assembly : The Commission On The Legislative Process 1972-73, Richard Kirk Jonas
Master's Theses
Of the forces which led to institutional modernization in the Virginia General Assembly in the early 1970's, the Commission on the Legislative Process was one of the most significant. The Commission focused its attention on those administrative, managerial and structural problems which were among the most significant impedi ments to the Assembly's efficient operation. In the administrative and managerial areas the Commission had great success. Administrative improvements in staff support were especially significant. Staff support was recommended and subsequently approved for individual legislators, standing committees and the Assembly as a whole.

Oliver Cromwell And The Monarchy, Neil R. Bryant
Oliver Cromwell And The Monarchy, Neil R. Bryant
Honors Theses
It is easy to portray Cromwell as some kind of Machiavellian plotter bent upon the achievement of personal gain through coercion, even murder, yet as Wingfied-Stratford noted, it was possible for Charles to save himself and his crown, but "Charles was more resolved to die than Oliver Cromwell to kill him." Cromwell and the other like minded members of the army were forced to depose and kill the King by Charles himself. Political, social, and most particularly, religious forces combined to pressure Cromwell into a long and agonizing decision, but when once firmly convinced of the moral rightness of his …

The Transiational Period: Massive Resistance And Norfolkd, Va., Malnie Ijams Payne
Honors Theses
Segregation itself was not dead in Virginia, but it took on a more subtle approach. Governor Almond appointed a commission on the same day the schools opened in Norfolk to deal with the problem in a different way. The commission brought forth the Perrow or "freedom of choice" plan, lettin gparents decide if their children would attend an integrated school. No, segregation was not dead, it had just gone into hiding. When and if segregation ned altogether, whether it be "dejure" (by law) or "defacto" (by the fact), the transition from past attitudes of racial superiority to a "colorless" society …

United States Foreign Policy And Mesopotamian Oil 1923-1928, Robert Francaviglia
United States Foreign Policy And Mesopotamian Oil 1923-1928, Robert Francaviglia
History Theses & Dissertations
This thesis views the efforts of American oil interests to participate in the exploitation of Middle East oil resources in the 192Os as a point of departure in United States foreign policy. In its opposition to official involvement in the affairs of private business, the United States Government insisted that American oil companies negotiate directly with the British Government dominated companies which controlled the Near and Middle East. By placing the execution of its international oil policy under the control of private industry, the United States Government surrendered its capacity to conduct diplomacy with regard to a vital strategic resource. …

U.S. Security Policy In Postwar Japan; The Making Of A Cold War Ally, Thomas James Hehman
History Theses & Dissertations
This thesis is an examination of the role of American policy makers in the transformation of Japan from a defeated, disarmed enemy to a Cold War ally on the path to rearmament during the Allied Occupation (1945-1952). The original Occupation goals of disarmament and demilitarization for Japan were embodied in Article IX of the American-sponsored Japanese Constitution of 1947. These goals were unilaterally discarded. 'by American policy makers as the Cold War developed and U,S. security policy in Asia dictated that Japan be rehabilitated as an ally. Douglas MacArthur presided over the Occupation of Japan almost in its entirety, and …
The Influence Of Renaissance Neoplatonism On Michelangelo, Judith Carole Riley
The Influence Of Renaissance Neoplatonism On Michelangelo, Judith Carole Riley
History Theses & Dissertations
The problem of interpreting Michelangelo's art, and poetry in terms of the Renaissance philosophy of Neoplatonism has long been debated. After establishing that Michelangelo was personally acquainted with the major philosophers Marsillo Finco and Giovanni Pico della Mirandola, selected major works by the artist are analyzed as to how they illustrate the major concepts of Neoplatonism. Supporting evidence, is drawn from Michelangelo ' poetry, in which he expressed his esthetic theory, which included the Platonic system of ideal forms; a hierarchical universe; the perfectibility of the human soul through contemplation; and the exercise of human love as preparation for divine …

The Open Door And The Rise Of Chinese Nationalism: American Policy And China, 1917-1928, Brian Thomas George
The Open Door And The Rise Of Chinese Nationalism: American Policy And China, 1917-1928, Brian Thomas George
History ETDs
This monograph traces the interaction of American diplomacy with the rise of nationalism in China between 1917 and 1928. It illustrates how the United States hoped to preserve the Open Door in China through the tactic of institutionalizing cooperation with Japan and the other major capitalist powers following World War I.· When that method failed to fulfill American objectives, the United States turned in the direction of a more independent approach. The failure to maintain cooperation in the 1920s, however, was a major factor in moving the United States and Japan down the road to Pearl Harbor over the next …
Karl Barth And Evangelism, Gregory G. Bolich
Karl Barth And Evangelism, Gregory G. Bolich
Western Evangelical Seminary Theses
All beginnings are hard. Often a beginning is difficult because not enough people perceive its desirability or need. Starting is hard when all things appear new, for the way ahead is unseen. Usually, a vision is necessary. Generally, the foundation of the past is essential. But faith is the sine qua non for an evangelical beginning.
