Toward A Theological Understanding Of The Psychological Implications Accompanying Death, Ralph Wentzel Mar 1977

Toward A Theological Understanding Of The Psychological Implications Accompanying Death, Ralph Wentzel

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This thesis is an attempt not only to understand the bereavement and grief of loved ones who are left behind, but it is also an uncompromising work depicting the reality of death and the pressing needs that arise when it is imminent, needs that are unique to every individual and that must be treated as such. As a Christian, I hope to convey thoughts that will relate to the personal needs of both the bereaved and to the suffering and dying patient. It is hoped that this paper will help the pastor to realize that he is not the "living" …

In Their Hearts Forever: The Dynamics Of Stalinism, James Seymour Wilson Feb 1977

In Their Hearts Forever: The Dynamics Of Stalinism, James Seymour Wilson

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis is a general examination of the Soviet and East European crisis which followed the death of Joseph Stalin in March, 1953. Stalin's character, position, and power were such that the methods he employed in the government of the vast multi-national and multi-state empire bequeathed to his successors could not be made to function in his absence without reform and redefinition. The post-Stalin leadership realized that in order to consolidate its position at the head of the empire a careful program of "de-Stalinization" was mandatory. The prosecution of that program from the announcement of collective leadership in April, 1953, …

Paul's Principals Of Counseling In First And Second Timothy: The Search For A Biblical View Of Counseling, Robert Gaiser Feb 1977

Paul's Principals Of Counseling In First And Second Timothy: The Search For A Biblical View Of Counseling, Robert Gaiser

Master of Divinity Thesis

Thus this paper seeks to define a balanced position between psychology and theology and between secular counseling and counseling by those with theological training. This is done in a general overview. But going beyond the definition of these terms and the relationship of theology to psychology, the author seeks to set forth some counseling methods or terms that Paul uses in his two letters to Timothy. The purpose of this paper is to set forth these principals to aid us in the area of pastoral counseling.

Gender Role Of Male Pseudohermaphrodites In The Dominican Republic, Sara V. Mallea Jan 1977

Gender Role Of Male Pseudohermaphrodites In The Dominican Republic, Sara V. Mallea

Theses and Dissertations

This study introduces factors in the post-pubertal change of gender role in a group of male pseudohermaphrodites in the Dominican Republic. The individuals grow up as girls because of ambiguous genitalia at birth. Upon the onset of puberty, with development of scrotum and phallus, they generally select adult male models to emulate as their future role behavior. The essay describes the socio-cultural setting in which the children are raised and proposes a theory that differential socialization of boys and girls and adult access to resources are contributing elements in the decisions to switch gender roles. At the time of the …

Unwiederbringlich Und Effi Briest : Eine Studie Zu Theodor Fontanes ErzäHlweise, Christine Gentzkow Jan 1977

Unwiederbringlich Und Effi Briest : Eine Studie Zu Theodor Fontanes ErzäHlweise, Christine Gentzkow

Dissertations and Theses

In this thesis an attempt is made to show the peculiar features of Fontane's narrative style as well as his art of characterization. I have tried to interpret his concept of humaneness in the two novels, Unwiederbringlich and Effi Briest, and to show how the composition of these novels is directed to the portrait of the individual.

Theodor Fontane's unusual distinction lies in his keen observation of the Prussian scene and his craftsmanship as a cosmopolitan storyteller. The principal elements of his works are a sense of historical continuity and an uncommon perception of the speech and gestures by …

The American Dream And The Unwanted Child, Wallace A. V. Hedges

American Studies ETDs

By the time a nation celebrates a 200th birthday it is expected that will have a long list of accomplishments. It can also be expected to have some deficits; it may not as yet have accomplished all of its goals. This study has viewed one facet of the American Dream – the myth of America as a welcoming place for the unwanted of the world. The myth is that here there will be no unwanted people. This study explores this part of the American Dream by examining the plight of unwanted children. This study has grown out of this …

Now And Forever My Own Mistress: Virginia Woolf's Essay Style, Robert Steven Ferebee Jan 1977

Now And Forever My Own Mistress: Virginia Woolf's Essay Style, Robert Steven Ferebee

English Language and Literature ETDs

This study of Virginia Woolf's essay style defines the characteristics of her style and places it within the history of non-fiction prose style. The deeper we journey into Woolf's essays, the more complex they become, until we find ourselves involved in a fresh, personal, and carefully rendered style. I have divided the style into its major characteristics, and my first chapter deals with these: controlling devices, clarity, rhythm, voice, and the exchange between reader and writer. The second chapter begins a series of comparisons between Woolf's style and that of several writers who may have had an influence on the …

This discussion of the reader in Northanger Abbey consists of a "Prologue, 11 "Journal, 11 and "Epilogue. 11 The "Prologue II deals with the problems various critics have encountered while reading Northanger Abbey; the "Journal" records the complexities of an active, creative reading of the novel; the "Epilogue" reveals that an awareness of Northanger Abbey's structure can yield new insights into characters and situations.

Croce's Criticism Of Hegel, Giulio Tambalo Jan 1977

Croce's Criticism Of Hegel, Giulio Tambalo

Philosophy ETDs

There appear to be a number of errors in Hegel's philosophical system, but the most basic, from which the majority of others are derived, is the confusion between opposite concepts and distinct concepts. Opposite concepts (i.e., true and false; life and death) seem to exclude one another, whereas distinct concepts (i.e., fancy and intellect) are united with each other and, at the same time, united with the whole (in our example: the concept of mind). The logical category of opposition is one thing, and the logical category of distinction is another. Hegel offered his principle of solution of the problem …

Using Music To Teach English As A Second Language: A Guide To The Use Of Song Lyrics, Peter M. Carney Jan 1977

Using Music To Teach English As A Second Language: A Guide To The Use Of Song Lyrics, Peter M. Carney

MA TESOL Collection

This project consists of two parts: the first is a "guide", which lists seven distinct subject areas that can be taught or reinforced through the use of song lyrics. These seven areas are: Grammar/Structure; Conversation; Vocabulary; Idioms, Colloquial Expressions, and Two-word verbs; Figures of Speech ( Metaphors, Similes, Personification, Allusion ); Writing; and Aural/Oral skills. The reason I refer to this as a "guide" is because it presents samples of different types of songs within each category, and suggests ways to use them.

The second part consists of thirty songs, each one of which refers back to at least one …

Inscluded also are: a brief rationale for the project, a list of the criteria …

The Use Of The American Heritage New Illustrated History Of The United States In An Advanced Esl Class, Karen L. Yablonski-Toll Jan 1977

The Use Of The American Heritage New Illustrated History Of The United States In An Advanced Esl Class, Karen L. Yablonski-Toll

MA TESOL Collection

This report describes the American Heritage New Illustrated History of the United States, which is a sixteen-volume set of chronologically ordered books. It also presents student-teacher objectives devised for its use following a one-semester course in which it was used at the secondary level. In formulating the objectives, I attempted to devise a course very much like a regular secondary or college-level American History course in which ESL students would have an opportunity to experience something more than a superficial or cursory exposure to that history. In evaluating its use, I attempted to identify what part the books and their …

Tooning Into English ( A Rationale For The Use Of Cartoons In The English Language Classroom Plus Cartoons And Lesson Plans ), Timothy James Maciel Jan 1977

Tooning Into English ( A Rationale For The Use Of Cartoons In The English Language Classroom Plus Cartoons And Lesson Plans ), Timothy James Maciel

MA TESOL Collection

Teachers of English are constantly seeking new and better materials to aid their students in learning the English language. Sometimes these materials are in the form of newspaper or magazine articles and advertisements to show how a grammatical pattern studied in the textbook is actually applied in the culture. Sometimes these materials are in the form of cultural artifacts such as clothing items or eating utensils. And very often these materials are in the form of pictures and photographs to give the student a visual representation of new words or grammatical patterns. Whatever the material, the teacher is constantly looking …

Valentin Roeser’S Essay On The Clarinet (1764) Background And Commentary, Albert Richard Rice Jan 1977

Valentin Roeser’S Essay On The Clarinet (1764) Background And Commentary, Albert Richard Rice

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Valentin Roeser’s Essai d’instruction à l’usage de ceux qui composent pour la clarinette et le cor is the earliest treatise on instrumentation and the first theoretical study of the clarinet. Comparisons are drawn with other eighteenth-century instructional materials, e.g. Francoeur’s Diapason général, La Borde’s Essai sur la musique, and Vanderhagen’s Méthode nouvelle et raisonnée pour la clarinette. A history of the chalumeau and two-keyed clarinet is presented, along with a biographical sketch of Roeser and an English translation of the first section of the Essai. Appendices include a checklist of Roeser’s writings and a list of eighteenth-century music using the …

Second Order Logic And Logical Form, Daniel Frederick Bayer Jan 1977

Second Order Logic And Logical Form, Daniel Frederick Bayer

Student Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores several related issues surrounding second order logic. The central problem running throughout is whether second order logic should provide the underlying logic for formalizations of natural language. A prior problem is determining the significance of this choice. Such controversies over the adoption of a logic usually involve assessing the merits of challengers to first order logic. In some of these rival systems various first order logical truths do not hold. The failure of the Law of the Excluded Middle in intuitionistic systems is the most common example. The other alternatives to first order logic accept it as …

Albert Bandura And Ellen G. White: A Comparative Study Of Their Concepts Of Behavior Modification Through Modeling, Miriam S. Tumangday Jan 1977

Albert Bandura And Ellen G. White: A Comparative Study Of Their Concepts Of Behavior Modification Through Modeling, Miriam S. Tumangday

Dissertations

Problem. One of the major concerns in education today is the improvement of behavior. Over the years various strategies have been proposed to modify human conduct. A careful review of these theories shows many similarities and divergences. Albert Bandura and Ellen G. White, two proponents from different eras and with widely disparate cultural and intellectual heritage, have strongly recommended modeling or example as the major factor in shaping human behavior. The present study sought to determine what, if any, similarities or differences exist in their modeling concepts.

Procedure. This investigation is a descriptive analytical study concerned with concepts …

Mccarthyism In Utah, Richard Swanson Jan 1977

Mccarthyism In Utah, Richard Swanson

Theses and Dissertations

The exaggerated anti-Communist crusade of Senator Joseph McCarthy allegedly gained the support of a majority of Americans during the early 1950's. It is historically important and interesting to question that supposition by considering the character of McCarthy's following in each state. This study shows that in Utah sympathy for the second Red Scare abounded and evidences of McCarthyism were readily apparent.

Three indicators illustrate Utah's support for the Wisconsin senator. The defeat of Elbert Thomas in 1950 dramatically epitomizes the successful use of incriminating allegations effectively employed by McCarthy. The election, or re-election, of McCarthy supporters and the defeat of …

George Q. Cannon's Views On Church And State, Lyndon W. Cook Sr. Jan 1977

George Q. Cannon's Views On Church And State, Lyndon W. Cook Sr.

Theses and Dissertations

Writers of nineteenth century Utah generally recognize George Q. Cannon's religious and political influence as second only to that of Brigham Young. Having occupied several positions of importance in the political arena as well as in the Mormon Church, Cannon is a major figure in Utah history whose life and thought merit careful examination.

This treatise is a study of George Q. Cannon's views on the institutions of church and state. After presenting a biographical sketch of Cannon's life, it examines his beliefs regarding the religious clauses in the First Amendment, and the place of revelation, positive law, and majority …

The Three-Dimensional Image Of Chance, Calvin Alexander Mcfarlane Jan 1977

The Three-Dimensional Image Of Chance, Calvin Alexander Mcfarlane

Masters Theses

In order to create a work of art that has, for an unknown observer, as great a variety of meanings and interpretations as possible; the work must be of the sort that will allow any random observer to project their own experience into the work as its meaning and/or interpretation. The work of art created must present to the viewer a rich experience of mutually exclusive associations. For the work to be unlimited in associations, it must be free from any intentionally representative imagery on the part of the artist. In other words, the work should be abstract to the …

The Role Of Betrayal In Selected Drama Of Tennessee Williams, Craig E. Sanderson Jan 1977

The Role Of Betrayal In Selected Drama Of Tennessee Williams, Craig E. Sanderson

Masters Theses

Much of the critical analysis of Tennessee Williams' drama concerns itself with the inherent conflict between ideals and reality in the universe as perceived by Williams. Such analysis, however, has not considered this conflict as a source of betrayal, or betrayal as a dominant theme in Williams' drama. In at least four of his plays it becomes evident how each of the individual characters in Williams' drama endures the conflict of reality and ideals, and the extent to which their respective approaches to the resolution of this struggle result in betrayal. Four plays--all regarded as among his most successful and …
