On My Development As A Painter Since 1971, David Glenn Hines Jul 1977

On My Development As A Painter Since 1971, David Glenn Hines

Art & Art History ETDs

By painting in a representational style, I have become more aware of the way in which I relate visually to the world around me. Exploring this relationship has provided me with a physical and mental activity by which I can establish a self-identity compatible with my personality and intellectual capacities. It also gives me the means to provide worthwhile experience for many other people. I have explored these interests through a style which is traditional yet still seems to me to offer contemporary challenges. By taking attention away from the painting as art object and putting it on the world …

Choice And Success: The Evolution Of A Modern Hero, Laurence W. Ranstead Jul 1977

Choice And Success: The Evolution Of A Modern Hero, Laurence W. Ranstead

Dissertations and Theses

The phenomenon of modern fantasy is the result of a tradition that originated with romance. It is a tradition that has experienced continual redefinement and utilization over the years. This is evidenced by the rediscovery of certain characteristics of the Medieval Romance and the development of others by the Romantics, William Blake, William Wordsworth, and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. These characteristics are identifiable in the works of such later writers as Charles Dickens, William Morris, H.G. Wells, G.B. Shaw, C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkein. The concern of these succeeding authors is the same as that of the Romantics, i.e., the nature …

A Systems Analysis Of Albuquerque's Rescue Service, Leslie Paul Page Iii Jul 1977

A Systems Analysis Of Albuquerque's Rescue Service, Leslie Paul Page Iii

American Studies ETDs

This research involves a systems analysis of Albuquerque's Rescue Services System. The Rescue Services System transforms the input 11medical emergency11 into an 11emergency met11, the output. To understand this emergency medical services system, four algorithmic procedures are applied. First, the system is defined in terms of how it ought to function, termed its normative state. The system definition is based on defining (1) the four subsystems comprising the Rescue Services System, (2) the basic input and output of each, (3) the primary subsystem elements which interact to produce the desired output, and (4) the subsystem interactions which transform the input …

Obsolescence And The American Knowledge Worker: The Contest Of Employer-Sponsored Continuing Education Programs, John A. Cantwell Jul 1977

Obsolescence And The American Knowledge Worker: The Contest Of Employer-Sponsored Continuing Education Programs, John A. Cantwell

American Studies ETDs

The U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare projects that 1,353,000 higher-education degrees will be awarded in 1977, versus 635,000 in 1964--a 113 per cent increase in only thirteen years. Many of these individuals will become what Peter Drucker, the management theorist, calls "knowledge workers." They will pursue work which involves the creation and marketing of knowledge and ideas rather than the production of goods or delivery of services. The "tools" of the knowledge worker, then, are concepts and skills; unfortunately, in a highly technological society, these concepts and skills change so rapidly they often become obsolete during the work …

The Union Bimetallic Party Of Oregon, 1896-1898, Ludger Mogge Jul 1977

The Union Bimetallic Party Of Oregon, 1896-1898, Ludger Mogge

Dissertations and Theses

On March 23 - 26, 1898, Populists, Democrats, and Silver Republicans of Oregon held their state conventions in Portland and agreed upon a common platform and a common state ticket for the elections of June 6, 1898. None of the available works on Oregon history explains that this fusion was the culmination of a two-year effort to unite the reform forces the state. This thesis tries to fill the gap. Because of the lack of secondary works on the subject, the thesis is based mainly on two sources: newspapers on microfilm, especially The Oregonian; and the unpublished correspondence of party …

France, The United States And The Spanish-American War, Richard Henry Owens Jul 1977

France, The United States And The Spanish-American War, Richard Henry Owens

History Theses & Dissertations

The present study is an examination of the effect of the Spanish-American War on the formal relations of France and the United States. Because France was the neighbor and friend of Spain and also at least an erstwhile friend of the United States, the war presented certain difficulties for the French government. At home colonialists and royalists sympathetic to Spain demanded overt support of the Spanish cause. The Spanish government looked to France first to lead a diplomatic coalition against the United States and then to mediate the dispute. The United States, meanwhile, urged Paris to follow a policy of …

Unifying Principles In The English Renaissance Sonnet Sequence, Deborah Fairfield Heatwole Jul 1977

Unifying Principles In The English Renaissance Sonnet Sequence, Deborah Fairfield Heatwole

English Theses & Dissertations

In this thesis, the structural and thematic development of the English sonnet sequence during the years of its greatest vogue is examined in detail. The sonnet itself, as the basic unit of the structure of a sequence, is analyzed, and the various characteristics of the sequences themselves are investigated. The sequences of Sir Philip Sidney, Edmund Spenser, Samuel Daniel, and Michael Drayton are discussed in separate chapters.

The basic contention of this thesis is that, while many sonnet "cycles" are mere collections of discrete sonnets, the major sonnet writers of this period constructed sequences that are highly organized along stylistic, …

Samuel Becket's Use Of "Silence", Russell V. Watkins Jul 1977

Samuel Becket's Use Of "Silence", Russell V. Watkins

English Theses & Dissertations

Silence is an important aspect of modern literature. No other living writer has made more adept use of silence in his fictional works than has Samuel Beckett. In this thesis submitted in partial fulfillment for the M.A. degree in English, I provide an in-depth study of Beckett's use of silence both in his prose works and in his plays. Not only does this thesis provide an in-depth study of Beckett's use of silence, but it also provides a brief survey of how Beckets use of silence has gradually evolved in his fictional works, and comments on the significance of …

Integrating The Adult Confirmand Into The Local Congregation, Frederick Koehler Jun 1977

Integrating The Adult Confirmand Into The Local Congregation, Frederick Koehler

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Methods of activating and integrating into the church will be touched on so that by any means we might save some. But this thesis will not satisfy all who read it. For it does not claim to have investigated all the programs or tried to define what an active member is. Probably the closest that this paper will come to that answer is that a person must center his life in and around the Word and the Sacraments. While many subjects will be treated, such as preaching, counseling, working with youth, evangelism, stewardship, psychology, personality and doctrine, none of these …

An Investigation Of The Meaning Of The Word Sabbaton In Colossians 2:16, Paul Giem Jun 1977

An Investigation Of The Meaning Of The Word Sabbaton In Colossians 2:16, Paul Giem

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Colossians 2:16 has been a much-debated text, with no consensus reached yet as to its meaning. In view of this, it was felt that the passage should be re-examined to see if a better understanding of the text could be reached.

The study begins with a survey of the recent literature It is found that opinion on the meaning of the word [sabbaton] in Colossians 2:16 is divisible into four groups: Those who feel it meant the seventh-day sabbath in toto, those who feel that it meant the ceremonial sabbaths, those who feel that it meant the Jewish part of …

Encounter With Otherness : Nature And Identity In Rolvaag's Giants In The Earth, Beatrice Jensen Smith Jun 1977

Encounter With Otherness : Nature And Identity In Rolvaag's Giants In The Earth, Beatrice Jensen Smith

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Ole Edvart Rolvaag, the Norwegian-American novelist of the immigrant experience, is recognized primarily for one work, Giants in the Earth, frequently accredited the novel that deals most effectively with the human cost underlying the glorious national achievement of westward expansion. Though the estimate is a positive one, by being categorized so succinctly, Giants is in some danger of being. perfunctorily dismissed as an excellent frontier novel and little else.

Though Rolvaag, by his own statement, intended to memorialize the human tragedies so easily forgotten in the onrush of settlement, the implications of his narrative go far beyond the historical …

William Faulkner: The Search And The Simile, Denise R. Dick Jun 1977

William Faulkner: The Search And The Simile, Denise R. Dick

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

William Faulkner (1897-1962) is well known for his distinctive prose style -- his word choice, his long sentences, and his chains of imagery. In this paper, three novels, Sartoris (1929), Absalom, Absalom! (1936), and The Mansion (1955) are studied to see what can be learned about Faulkner's use of the simile.

Many of Faulkner's characters are tortured by a disparity between their peaceful past and their chaotic present. It was found that Faulkner uses the greatest number of similes in the passages of the novels where the characters are searching most intensely to reconcile their past and their present. This …

The Influence Of Ben Jonson On The Poetry Of Yeats, Wayne Kenneth Chapman May 1977

The Influence Of Ben Jonson On The Poetry Of Yeats, Wayne Kenneth Chapman

Dissertations and Theses

What this thesis attempts to do is to render as full a picture as possible of Yeats's interest in Ben Jonson, using to the fullest advantage the many hints that come from Yeats and secondary criticism. Specifically, the focus of this paper is on the process by which Yeats was able, like Eliot, Pound and others, to found a tough, new poetic style with reference to this seventeenth-century period of Jonson. Yeats's reading of "Jonson and the others," which took place at the turn of this century, triggered a whole series of discoveries by Yeats which anticipated the aesthetic beliefs …

The Founding And Early Years Of The National Association Of Colored Women, Therese C. Tepedino May 1977

The Founding And Early Years Of The National Association Of Colored Women, Therese C. Tepedino

Dissertations and Theses

The National Association of Colored Women was formed in 1896, during a period when the Negro was encountering a great amount of difficulty in maintaining the legal and political rights granted to him during the period of reconstruction. As a result of this erosion of power, some historians have contended that the Negro male was unable to effectively deal with the problems that arose within the Negro community. It was during this same period of time that the Negro woman began to assert herself in the affairs of her community. In the beginning, her work was done in conjunction with …

My Work As The Visible Revelations Of My Private World, Susan Louise Ricker May 1977

My Work As The Visible Revelations Of My Private World, Susan Louise Ricker

Art & Art History ETDs

Seeing the subtleties of one’s own aging is difficult. The body changes slowly; the maturing process is accepted without surprise. The method by which a person gains understanding of that self-growth is by retrospective reflection not only through memory, but through an assessment of the physical by-products of one’s own life. My art is the direct link to reviewing my growth process. In this paper I will discuss the changes that have taken place in my art, how these changes are always in agreement with my personal changes, and how the two are inseparable so what either change can cause …

Nonverbal Communication, Mary Deborah Britton May 1977

Nonverbal Communication, Mary Deborah Britton

Art & Art History ETDs

'Speechless complainer, I will learn thy thought; In thy dumb action will I be as perfect As begging Hermits in their holy prayers: Thou shalt not sigh, nor hold thy stumps to heaven, Nor wink, nor nod, nor kneel nor make a sign, But I of these will wrest an alphabet, And by still practice learn to know thy meaning.’ –Anonymous

The Iconography Of Mesoamerican Stone Yokes, Laurie Castro May 1977

The Iconography Of Mesoamerican Stone Yokes, Laurie Castro

Art & Art History ETDs

In the past hundred years the significance and function of the pre-Hispanic Mesoamerican stone yoke have been widely discussed. Although it is now generally believed that the stone yoke is related in some way to the Mesoamerican ballgame, the precise role of the yoke is still not completely understood. In this study, the principle motifs of 53 stone yokes are examined and their iconography analyzed in an attempt to come to a better understanding of their relationship with and their use in the pre-Hispanic mesoamerican ballgame.

In attempting to interpret the various motifs characteristic of stone yokes from the Middle …

The Influence Of The Position Of Women In The Society On The Development Of Nursing As A Profession In America, Marion Rachael Dickens May 1977

The Influence Of The Position Of Women In The Society On The Development Of Nursing As A Profession In America, Marion Rachael Dickens

American Studies ETDs

The purpose of this dissertation is to examine the cultural context in which nursing developed in America. It is the thesis of the dissertation that while there have been many influences on the development of nursing, nursing education, and nursing practice, the predominant influence on all facets of nursing has been that it has been a feminine occupation, and women have had a subordinate status in a society led and controlled by men. The first chapter examines the origins of nursing in America, stressing how, when more men were occupied away from the everyday activities of the society, women became …

The Reciprocal Influence Of Georgia O'Keeffe And Alfred Stieglitz, Meridel Rubenstein May 1977

The Reciprocal Influence Of Georgia O'Keeffe And Alfred Stieglitz, Meridel Rubenstein

Art & Art History ETDs

This dissertation will prove that Georgia O'Keeffe, painter, and her husband, Alfred Stieglitz, photographer, had a strong influence on each other's work. This paper compares O'Keeffe and Stieglitz as working artists and traces chronologically their growth in relation to one another.

The method of comparison is used to prove their reciprocal influence. The dissertation is divided into seven different time periods in chronological order.

The first chapter examines their individual histories prior to their meeting in 1916 to prove their need for one another in terms of their images as well as the circumstances in their particular lives at the …

Synoptic Problem : An Investigation Of Synoptic Relationships, George Capone May 1977

Synoptic Problem : An Investigation Of Synoptic Relationships, George Capone

Senior Scholar Papers

In recent years, the Synoptic Problem has become an important focus of New Testament scholarship. The Two-Document Hypothesis, although still widely accepted as the solution, has recently been challenged by a variety of source hypotheses, most notably the Griesbach hypothesis. In effect, the Synoptic Problem has become an open question for an increasing number of scholars. This project analyzes four significant pericopae, the Empty Tomb Tradition, the Kingdom Parables Discourse, the Synoptic Apocalypse, and the Transfiguration Narrative, in an attempt to determine priority and dependence among the synoptic Gospels. The study does not presuppose a particular source theory, although it …

Maine And The Hartford Convention: The Impact Of The War Of 1812 On The Politics Of Maine And Massachusetts, Alan S. Taylor May 1977

Maine And The Hartford Convention: The Impact Of The War Of 1812 On The Politics Of Maine And Massachusetts, Alan S. Taylor

Senior Scholar Papers

The question of why the New England Federalists failed to force a confrontation with the national government has been a continuing historical controversy. I feel that the vigorous stance of the New England Democratic-Republicans particularly in Maine (then a part of Massachusetts), to radical Federalist schemes acted to restrain their

opponents. In the final analysis my argument is that New England could not act without Maine. To paraphrase Federalist George Herbert of Ellsworth, on such a slender thread do the destinies of nations hang.

The Art Of Kiftlis Eg Marmae: An Interdisciplinary Work Exploring The Use Of Art History And Museology As Vehicles For Aesthetic Statements, Juan Manuel Cabrero-Oliver May 1977

The Art Of Kiftlis Eg Marmae: An Interdisciplinary Work Exploring The Use Of Art History And Museology As Vehicles For Aesthetic Statements, Juan Manuel Cabrero-Oliver

Art & Art History ETDs

The Art of Kiftlis eg Marmae is a mixed-media, interdisciplinary work exploring the use of art history and museology as vehicles for aesthetic statements. Included in the exhibition are manuscripts and ceremonial objects from the ruins of Kiftlis eg Marmae, a Bronze-Age civilization in the Near East, discovered in 1827, by Sir Joshua Pennington. Kiftlis eg Marmae, its anthropology, mythology, language and iconography are all fictitious. The piece thus strives to present an ostensibly well researched show of antiquities supported by extensive research. A catalogue accompanies the show. The catalogue includes two articles written by pseudonyms of the artist, some …

An Analysis Of My Work, Michele Rockstroh May 1977

An Analysis Of My Work, Michele Rockstroh

Art & Art History ETDs

The figure has long been a primary source of emotional, psychological and visual interest to me. I have been involved with the making of metalwork and drawings from and about different aspects of the figure for a few years now. The work done during my M.A. program at the University of New Mexico has clarified and identified the importance of the figure to my work, and helped in my recognition of vital, inherent qualities within the figure -- emotional, psychological and visual. This, then, is an analysis of the sources for the metalwork and drawings, and an explanation of what …

Santob's Debate Between The Pen And The Scissors, Clark A. Colahan May 1977

Santob's Debate Between The Pen And The Scissors, Clark A. Colahan

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

Critics of the rabbi Santob de Carrion's Proverbios morales have often remarked on the work's frequent juxtaposition of contradictory maxims. It has been further said that reversibility of ideas characterizes both its structure and the thinking of its author. Interpretations of the literary traditions from which such structure and thought may have sprung have differed sharply. This study examines Santob's major work in Hebrew, his Debate between the Pen and the Scissors, and demonstrates the close relation that exists between the Semitic literary tradition from which it comes and the Proverbios morales.

Through the assistance of Professor Jefim Schirmann of …

"Untitled", Sharret Rose May 1977

"Untitled", Sharret Rose

Art & Art History ETDs

In the past two years my work has gone through many changes. It has evolved from the naive belief that a piece of art could be meaningful to all people regardless of their background, to a personal understanding that art can not be that far reaching or controlled. I am now content to paint personal symbols that convey what is important to me. It is still my belief that understanding is available to all but not from pat formulas. This thesis describes the visual changes and the thoughts behind them.

A Critical Edition Of El Libro De Alexandre, Madelaine Aerni Ryland May 1977

A Critical Edition Of El Libro De Alexandre, Madelaine Aerni Ryland

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

The Libro de Alexandre is a thirteenth-century Spanish epic poem of the life and conquests of Alexander the Great of Macedonia. It is composed of slightly over 2,600 stanzas written in cuaderna vía. Two scholars have presented previous editions of the Paris manuscript of the poem in an attempt to make it available to students of mediaeval Spanish language and literature. Their editions, however, present the text in isolation and students must possess sophisticated knowledge of mediaeval Spanish in order to understand the complexities of the poem.

This edition attempts to provide an integrated version, one in which all …

Theory In Fidelino De Figueiredo's Literary Criticism And Literary History: His Place In The Theoretical Continuum, Terrance Joseph Murphy May 1977

Theory In Fidelino De Figueiredo's Literary Criticism And Literary History: His Place In The Theoretical Continuum, Terrance Joseph Murphy

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

In the twentieth century, scholars have written about the theory and practice of literary criticism more than at any time in the past. Luso-Brazilian, particularly Brazilian, literary criticism has benefitted from this surge of interest. As in any pioneer endeavor, the most general tasks have been undertaken first. The result has been a hazy notion of individual contributions by scholars in that area. In this dissertation I assume the charge of addressing the heretofore undeveloped assessment of Fidelino de Figueiredo's principal contributions to Luso-Brazilian literary theory.

The Introduction and first chapter provide an evaluation of Figueiredo's personal experiences and philosophical …
