In The Age Of Obsession, Ivor E. Cooper Jun 1985

In The Age Of Obsession, Ivor E. Cooper

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

In Writing In the Age of Obsession the author has attempted to create a novel which examines a number of important issues. By writing the narrative in the first person he has been able to pursue these themes through the development of Daniel Rackham, the main character.

The author chose the late nineteenth century as the setting because the period was one of dynamic and often revolutionary change. Within such a time period as this, when an old era is passing away and a new era is beginning, we are able to witness phenomena which can only be precipitated by …

Controlling The Big Stick: The United States Navy And The Cuban Intervention Of September 1906, Christopher A. Abel Jun 1985

Controlling The Big Stick: The United States Navy And The Cuban Intervention Of September 1906, Christopher A. Abel

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

A case study method is used to examine the role played by the United States Navy in bringing about the Second Cuban Intervention of 1906-1909. The 1906 American navy had a distinct lack of centralized direction during the September crisis in Cuba. As a consequence, initiative in the crisis passed to the several naval officers representing the United States in Cuba at the time. These officers acted in consonance with the navy's own institutional agendas and contrary to the objectives of the Theodore Roosevelt administration. In so doing these officers were supported and even rewarded for their actions by the …

John Ford: A Concise Annotated Bibliography, Jeffrey L. Johnson Jun 1985

John Ford: A Concise Annotated Bibliography, Jeffrey L. Johnson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This study fills the needs for an annotated bibliography in John Ford studies. Until now, no such project has been attempted. Because of the tremendous amount of material available by and about Ford, the scope of this project was limited to published works about Ford in English.

In compiling the bibliography, I used previously published bibliographies on Ford and the annual MLA Bibliography. In addition, I consistently checked the bibliographies of each work cited in my bibliography to obtain those items which eluded me elsewhere.

I personally surveyed the contents of every book, essay, and other documents in preparing the …

Maypoles And Misfits : A Study Of Puritan Orthodoxy And Anglican Heterodoxy In Seventeenth Century Massachusetts, Sarah V. Miller Jun 1985

Maypoles And Misfits : A Study Of Puritan Orthodoxy And Anglican Heterodoxy In Seventeenth Century Massachusetts, Sarah V. Miller

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The particular ideas and history of Puritanism in America has been the focus of historians of many different persuasions for diverse purposes. The relationship between Puritanism in England and the evolution of Puritanism in America, as it relates to the history of Anglicanism and American independence has not been a major concern of most historians, however.

The two biographical studies contained in this paper, one of Thomas Morton and one of Sir Edmund Andros, are linked in history on several levels. The superficial similarities between the two men were a contributing factor to the choice of topic in this paper. …

We Come As Friends: Violent Social Conflict In New Mexico, 1810-1910, Tobias Duran May 1985

We Come As Friends: Violent Social Conflict In New Mexico, 1810-1910, Tobias Duran

American Studies ETDs

The focus of this work is on four major forms of violent social conflict: popular protest, racial and ethnic hostilities, vigilante activity, and political assassinations. The quest to define the social and historical context in which these events took place guided the inquiry. An explanation of the nineteenth century social setting would partially account for the transformations occurring during that time: the uprooting of a society, transitions in social institutions, and the imposition of a different rule of law, as ideology and as instrument of control. Consequently these developments generated social conflict.

A Church Planting Plan For The Northwest District Of The Wesleyan Church, Roger Kenneth Blake May 1985

A Church Planting Plan For The Northwest District Of The Wesleyan Church, Roger Kenneth Blake

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Excerpt: "A beautiful and unusually dry Oregon spring has allowed me to rototill my garden plot very early. With the ground free of weeds and finely pulverized, it was ready to be planted. Since it was still so early, my first decision was to wait. A later date would perhaps protect my garden from a hard killing frost. Then a thought crossed my mind. With this beautiful weather and the moisture that is sure to come, something will grow in my garden. If I do no t plant seeds that will produce a luscious vegetable crop, nature will sprout the …

Jean-Jacques Rousseau And The Politics Of Balance, Tesfaselassie Sebhatu May 1985

Jean-Jacques Rousseau And The Politics Of Balance, Tesfaselassie Sebhatu

Graduate Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to show that Rousseau’s political theory is coherent as he claimed in his Social Contract, and not contradictory as some think. By making a distinction between a doctrinal or principle level and an empirical or practical level, we will try to demonstrate Rousseau’s consistency by analyzing his concepts of sovereignty, general will, representation and natural law in detail.

Rousseau was strongly democrat at principle level in the sense that sovereignty always belongs to people, and flexible, even liberal, at the system of realization or empirical level in which reality is rich in detail and …

The Nature And Significance Of Christ's Death As Reflected In Selected General And Pauline Epistles, Masao Shimodate May 1985

The Nature And Significance Of Christ's Death As Reflected In Selected General And Pauline Epistles, Masao Shimodate

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

The death of Christ as the saving event was also the basis for Paul’s teaching on the sacraments. In the present study our interest is in the Lord's Supper rather than Baptism. Chapters 10: and: 11 of First Corinthians indicate what it was that Paul was particularly concerned about in this matter. These two chapters are the only places in which the Lord’s Supper is mentioned in the Pauline epistles.

The Political Career Of Robert Whitehead, William Baldwin Obrochta May 1985

The Political Career Of Robert Whitehead, William Baldwin Obrochta

Master's Theses

Robert Whitehead represented Nelson County in the Virginia General Assembly from 1942 until his death in 1960. He was widely recognized as the leading opponent to the dominant "Byrd Organization" in the state legislature. In this capacity, he often acted as a one-man party in opposition to the organization's financial, political, educational and public services policies. A gifted orator and financial expert, Whitehead was often mentioned as a potential candidate for governor although he was never able to commit himself to a state-wide race.

This thesis examines the political career of Robert Whitehead and evaluates his role in Virginia politics, …

Political Ethics And Responsibility : The Role Of The Elected Official, Janet M. Muller May 1985

Political Ethics And Responsibility : The Role Of The Elected Official, Janet M. Muller

Honors Theses

The word "politician" may, in today's society, bring with it some very bad connotations. Most people view politicians and elected officials as coniving scoundrels, shady characters, and power hungry villains. It may be true that some politicians are all of the above and more, but many of the office holders who run our legislatures and other branches of government are concerned with what is ethically and morally correct behavior in the political arena.

Unfortunately, the role of the elected public official is not always clear cut. For example, there is no universally acceptable definition of the duty of being a …

Prayer Fellowship In The First Half Of Synod’S History, Robert M. Hess May 1985

Prayer Fellowship In The First Half Of Synod’S History, Robert M. Hess

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The title of an article which appeared in the very first issue of the Ohio Synod's Columbus Theological Magazine may well describe the question of Missouri Synod fellowship. It has been "The Burning Question" since its very inception and even before its organization as a synod. The present study on fellowship is not the first attempt to deal with the question. It certainly won't be the last. This thesis is an attempt to look at fellowship in the Missouri Synod historically and theologically, assemble material which may be helpful to others who research the subject, and draw some conclusions from …

The Application Of The Lutheran Teaching Concerning The Just War To The Twentieth Century Counter-Insurgency Warfare, Frank Morgret May 1985

The Application Of The Lutheran Teaching Concerning The Just War To The Twentieth Century Counter-Insurgency Warfare, Frank Morgret

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Can there be any rules in war? Or, to phrase the same question in other words, is some sort o£ morality possible on the battlefield? The horrors o£ nuclear and guerrilla war prompt many to answer this question with a firm, even vehement, “No” Certainly the fact that millions of noncombatants are the targets for hundreds of nuclear-armed missles lends credence to their denial. Moreover, the vivid picture of the summary execution of a guerrilla by a Vietnamese police chief and the sickening stories of hurling some prisoners of war from a helicopter nine hundred or a thousand feet in …
