The Use Of The Hebrew Term Kbd And Its Significance For The Incarnation, Lee A. Maxwell
The Use Of The Hebrew Term Kbd And Its Significance For The Incarnation, Lee A. Maxwell
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The topic which was originally approved for my thesis was "The Incarnational Theme in the Old Testament, Especially its Explication through the Term kābōd." During the course of my research, especially in my investigation of the root kbd, I concluded that the original designation of the topic was not the best way in which to formulate and thereby to describe my research and its results. Accordingly, I submit the following title as a more accurate reflection of my thesis: "The Use of the Hebrew Term kbd and Its Significance for the Incarnation"
With that restatement of the topic in mind, …
The Consummation Of The Exodus: A Study Of The Exodus Motif In The Revelation, Philip S. Haugen
The Consummation Of The Exodus: A Study Of The Exodus Motif In The Revelation, Philip S. Haugen
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The study of the Exodus motif grew out of the author's curiosity concerning the clear reference to the Exodus in Revelation 15:3. The question which arose concerned the extent to which the Exodus motif is used in the Apocalypse, and its significance. Therefore, the purpose o this study is to examine and demonstrate the use of the Exodus motif in the Revelation.
The study will commence with a discussion in chapter one of typology and the unity of Scripture. Because the Exodus is a major source of Old Testament types, an attempt will be made in chapter one to illustrate …
The Theology And Practice Of Individual Confession And Absolution And Its Application To Pastoral Care From An Early North American Lutheran Perspective, Breno C. Thome
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The two subjects of this study^ namely, pastoral care and Individual confession and absolution, have traditionally been seen as closely connected. Each has also a unique character. In this study both subjects will be focused on from the perspective provided by the historical analysis of their development within the Lutheran context, specifically that of North American Lutheranism in the nineteenth century. Pastoral care has been greatly developed, particularly in the area of pastoral counseling, in the last fifty years. This parallels the increasing development of the behavioral sciences in this century. The causes and consequences of such rapid growth in …
Curtain Of Silence Japanese In Soviet Custody, 1945-1956, William F. Nimmo
Curtain Of Silence Japanese In Soviet Custody, 1945-1956, William F. Nimmo
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
The Soviet Union attacked- and defeated Japanese forces in Northeast Asia in the final days of the Second World War, and 2,100,000 Japanese soldiers and civilians suddenly fell into the hands of the Red Army. This thesis examines the experiences of Japanese in Soviet custody, efforts to obtain their release, and their eventual return to Japan. Repatriation of civilians from Soviet-controlled areas was slow, and military personnel were taken to the USSR for use as forced labor for several years. The Soviets conducted an intensive Marxist-Leninist indoctrination program for prisoners of war, and a professed acceptance of communism was a …
The Hermeneutical Principles Of Theodore Laetsch With A Focus On The Relationship Between The Old And The New Testaments, James Bollhagen
The Hermeneutical Principles Of Theodore Laetsch With A Focus On The Relationship Between The Old And The New Testaments, James Bollhagen
Doctor of Theology Dissertation
This dissertation will summarize the findings which resulted from an in-depth study of all the published works of Dr. Theodore Laetsch, professor of practical theology at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri. These writings include a commentary on Jeremiah and Lamentations, a commentary on the Minor Prophets, and eighty-six articles which appeared in the Concordia Theological Monthly.
The study was undertaken with the specific goal of ascertaining the hermeneutical principles of Laetsch, particularly those principles that address the relationship between the Old and New Testaments. The phrase "hermeneutical principles" will be employed in this paper in the following sense: an exegete's …
An Investigation Of Contemporary Feminist Arguments On Paul's Teaching On The Role Of Women In The Church, Hershel House Wayne
An Investigation Of Contemporary Feminist Arguments On Paul's Teaching On The Role Of Women In The Church, Hershel House Wayne
Doctor of Theology Dissertation
As may be readily seen, mass confusion pervades this problem. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the various approaches interpreters have used to understand the apostle Paul's teaching on the role of women in the church and to offer alternative ways to view the Pauline texts. Not only will I interact with the feminists on their specific perspectives of the pertinent Pauline texts, but I will examine the hermeneutical presuppositions of these writers and also attempt to discern their perspective of Scripture and how that affects the exegetical fruit they produce.
Transplain Migration: The Church Trains In Mormon Immigration, 1861-1868, John K. Hulmston
Transplain Migration: The Church Trains In Mormon Immigration, 1861-1868, John K. Hulmston
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The purpose of this thesis was to trace the pattern of Mormon immigration from Europe and the eastern United States during the decade of the 1860s. Although the initial Mormon migration of 1847 has recieved extensive attention from historians, later organized movements into the Great Basin by immigrant Mormon groups has remained virtually untouched. This thesis traces the formation, organization, and implementation of the church train emigration from Europe and the eastern United States. Also, it details its organization from the church hierarchy, as well as the extensive participation by the Mormon population as a whole.
A primary focus of …
Community Adaptation In The Judeo-Christian Tradition, John K. Overton
Community Adaptation In The Judeo-Christian Tradition, John K. Overton
Honors Theses
Pesach represents the pivotal event in Jewish history to many, but its historical development bristles even more intensely and significantly than is often acknowledged. Its origins reach behind the Exodus event into pastoral cultures, behind the values of modern Jewry, behind the sensibilities of ancient Yahwism. Its understanding has been creatively synthesized, assimilated, digested and shaped within the culture of the Hebrews and then within the culture of the Jews, but this is all based on a historical victory. Cultural assimilation, military rebellion, and a consolidating expression after rebellion are all present.
Philippians: Paul's Handbook On Conflict Management, Mark Kelley
Philippians: Paul's Handbook On Conflict Management, Mark Kelley
Western Evangelical Seminary Theses
Much of my life has been devoted to bringing together people and concepts which did not seem to belong together. In my high school days, I delighted in hosting parties to which I intentionally invited students from very different social groups. As a pastor, I have worked hard to bring the various cliques of small churches together in a sense of: unity. As a seminary student, I have striven to combine the highest academic standards with a concern for the relevance of each academic activity to the every-day pastorate.
This thesis is a further step towards developing a minstry of …
Documenting Archival Automation Systems: Guidelines For The Project Manager, Austin Moller
Documenting Archival Automation Systems: Guidelines For The Project Manager, Austin Moller
Dissertations and Theses
With the onset of the information age, archivists are more frequently placed in professional situations where they must work with automated systems to manage the records in their custody. They must acquire new skills to use this technology, including system analysis, system planning, and the principles of computer operation. An area that is frequently neglected, however, is that of developing and maintaining in-house project documentation for systems once equipment is in place and implementation has begun. This oversight leads to poor training strategies, inconsistencies in input and output, and information loss when personnel changes occur.
Project documentation is the group …
A Statistical Analysis And Comparison Of My Pastoral Ministry In The Light Of Church Growth Principles From Acts And Current Literature, James Robert Hall
A Statistical Analysis And Comparison Of My Pastoral Ministry In The Light Of Church Growth Principles From Acts And Current Literature, James Robert Hall
Western Evangelical Seminary Theses
The purpose of this study was to analyze my ministry in four churches in order to discover its strengths and weaknesses. It was believed that an understanding of the strengths and weaknesses evident through my ministry would enable corrective and supplemental measures to be taken.
The reason this study was undertaken was because of the fact that. in some church settings certain ministry methods worked. Then again, in other church settings, the same or similar methods did not seem to work. The questions: "Why did it work there?", and •why did it not work somewhere else?", were the motivating factors …
A Guide To William Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night" Or "What You Will", Deborah Morris
A Guide To William Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night" Or "What You Will", Deborah Morris
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
William Shakespeare's family came from the area surrounding Stratford-upon-Avon. William's father, John Shakespeare, was the son of a respectable farmer at Snitterfield, just a few short miles from Stratford. John arrived in Stratford with a moderate inheritance and set up business as a local merchant and landowner. He is described as being a wool dealer and a glover in Stratford. He purchased two houses; one in Green-hill Street and another in Henley Street.
In 1557, John married Mary Arden, daughter of a wealthy land owner, who brought with her an estate called "Ashbies" and an interest in two Snitterfield tenements. …
Vista Forms For Orchestra, Monte Schwarzwalder
Vista Forms For Orchestra, Monte Schwarzwalder
Masters Theses
Vista Forms for Orchestra is in three movements and is approximately 17 minutes and 34 seconds in duration. The first movement, "Zupkoiana", derives much of its melodic content from the following motive, taken from Ramon Zupko's piano concerto "Windsongs":
Several lesser ideas used in the first movement are 1) the sounding of dense vertical sonorities in rapid succession 2) double-dotted rhythms 3) the juxtapositioning of linear and harmonic sections, and 4) the Snare Drum motive stated in the first measure. All of these elements may be found in "Windsongs". The second movement, entitled "Monteana", derives much of its harmonic content …
The Effects Of Religious Affiliation And Attendance On Illicit Sexual Behavior And Substance Abuse, Thomas W. Zane
The Effects Of Religious Affiliation And Attendance On Illicit Sexual Behavior And Substance Abuse, Thomas W. Zane
Theses and Dissertations
A sample of 7724 college students in Washington and Utah was selected to study the relationships of religious activity and religious affiliation to illicit sexual behaviors, use of marijuana, and getting drunk. For all religious affiliations (except for the Jews), there were significant correlations between church activity and the measured illicit behaviors. LDS rates of behavior were significantly lower at <.001 for the five illicit behaviors. Two factor analyses were calculated to determine which sexual behaviors would load on a single factor and which substances would load on another factor. Extramarital coitus, heavy petting, and passionate kissing formed the first "sexual" factor. The use of beer, liquor, and marijuana combined with the behavior getting drunk to form the "substance-abuse" factor. A canonical analysis reported a moderate relationship with a canonical coefficient of .534 between the two factors. A discriminant analysis based on each subjects' religious affiliation and activity level yielded a 70-80 percent correct classification percentage.
James Joyce's Use Of Topography In Ulysses, Mary Beth Delea
James Joyce's Use Of Topography In Ulysses, Mary Beth Delea
Honors Theses
James Joyce's Ulysses stands out as the most conscientiously topographical novel ever written, according to the authors of Literary Landscapes of the British Isles. The Dublin which Joyce recreates is the Dublin of physical reality, painstakingly transposed so as to elicit exact details of the city. This detailed locale plays an important role in the novel, revealing many of Joyce's ingenious artistic purposes. The topography of Dublin appears the beginning of Ulysses and is significant until the end of the novel, influencing three major aspects of the work. The aspects referred to include the personality of Dublin as well as …
Litotes: Of The Unforgotten, R. K. Puma
Litotes: Of The Unforgotten, R. K. Puma
English Theses & Dissertations
The poems in Litotes: of the Unforgotten are about resiliency, the necessary ability to recover or adjust to changes, misfortunes. Themes of loss, of threatening circumstance, of insanity, are repeated; the resiliency, the willingness to rise from the experience appears in the voice which unifies the poems.
The predominant themes in this collection speak not so much of innocence as of experience; however "The Visit" is the only poem with a counterpart, the Spenserian sonnet "Chronicle." The former speaks to the positive side of heritage, the latter the negative. ''Chronicle'' is not too unlike Roethke's "My Papa's Waltz," a serious, …
Belief And Betrayal In Fiction: Four Original Stories, Betty Ann Lanigan
Belief And Betrayal In Fiction: Four Original Stories, Betty Ann Lanigan
English Theses & Dissertations
The ability to cope with disappointment when people, places or institutions fail to live up to expectations, might be considered one of the hallmarks of maturity. For the observer, the alteration of a personality, denied the softness of his illusions, can be intriguing. Keats wrote: "Tread softly because you tread on my dreams." Such an entreaty is a vain hope for the central figures in these stories, since it is their reaction to seeing their dreams demolished which forms their connecting link.
In my collection, the initial narrative "Joe Clancy" deals with the tragedy which ensues when an ignorant, romantic …
Noetic Infinity And Intelligible Matter: Reexamination Of The Fundamental Structure Of The Philosophy Of Plotinus, Atsushi Sumi
Noetic Infinity And Intelligible Matter: Reexamination Of The Fundamental Structure Of The Philosophy Of Plotinus, Atsushi Sumi
Institute for the Humanities Theses
Plotinus introduces the notion of intelligible matter to his system to elaborate on the multiplicity of the intelligible world and its procession from the One. As far as the intelligible world is stabilized by intelligible matter's turning towards the One, it is naturally conceived to be endowed with contemplative force. In the middle and late period of the development of Plotinus' philosophy, intelligible matter conspicuously functions as the principle of movement, intellection and desire towards the One. This vital conception of intelligible matter gives an ontological basis to the fact that Intellect is free from tedium. But the more dynamic …
Patent Medicine Town A Social History Of Patent Medicines In Marshall, Michigan, Teresa Lou Trupiano
Patent Medicine Town A Social History Of Patent Medicines In Marshall, Michigan, Teresa Lou Trupiano
Masters Theses
Marshall, Michigan, once known as "patent medicine town," had over fifty medicine companies. The medicine industry flourished in America until the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 regulated the trade. Marshall provides a microcosm of the industry.
The H. A. Peterman Co. (1870-1890) and Sharpsteen's Family Medicines (1873-1950) introduced Marshall to many techniques, from mail-order marketing to medicine shows. The Voltaic Belt Co. OSSIES) , Chrystal’s Electric Belts (1893-1905), L. F. Page Co. (1891— 1901), and H. A. Horton (1916-1928) sold remedies for "lost manhood." Success of the F. A. Stuart Co. (1893-1956) and Brooks Appliance Co. (1880-present) encouraged …
Skinned, Mary Ann Campbell
Skinned, Mary Ann Campbell
English Theses & Dissertations
My family is most often, to use Richard Hugo's phrase, "the triggering device" of my poetry. My poems about family are an attempt to understand why there cannot be a complete intimacy. From that dilemma grows the question of what, gave me the idea we were supposed to be hugging and kissing instead of cursing and slamming doors and then deciding we are human after all. These poems are a record of my discovery that we are individuals who have to accept our separateness but want to hang on to some form oi togetherness; they represent my acceptance of the …
The Pastoral Tradition In Film, Andrew J. Ford
The Pastoral Tradition In Film, Andrew J. Ford
Honors Theses
The pastoral, whether in painting, music, literature, or film, has always attempted to capture that fleeting moment in history, real or unreal, where man is autonomous. The pastoral life occurs only after man has gained a considerable amount of control over nature and before he has found himself controlled by his fellow man or by those common evils made real and specific by civilization. In other words, the pastoral tries to capture or create that period in history where man has conquered the wilderness in some major way, usually by farming or animal herding, but has not yet become involved …
Laity Expectations Of Ministers In The Black Urban Church: A Study Of Political And Social Expectations In The Context Of Ministry To Community And World, James Henry Harris
Laity Expectations Of Ministers In The Black Urban Church: A Study Of Political And Social Expectations In The Context Of Ministry To Community And World, James Henry Harris
Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Management
The study examined the Black church laity's expectations of the urban minister regarding his involvement in specific social and political issues that confront inhabitants of urban areas. A survey was administered to individuals in Black churches of different protestant denominations in a Southeastern Virginia City in order to determine the degree of the laity's expectations. Specifically, the survey sought answers to the questions: Do Black church laity expect the minister to deal with socio-economic and political problems in urban areas? and, What particular urban problems do the laity expect the minister to offer leadership in facing or solving?

The Ring Of Single Solutions, Deborah Anne Plummer
The Ring Of Single Solutions, Deborah Anne Plummer
English Theses & Dissertations
The Ring of Single Solutions is a cycle of poems divided into three parts. Central to each section is the motif of travel and the image of the circle. The journeys of the personae are physical, intellectual or spiritual and sometimes a combination of all three. These journeys always relate to other experiences which have profoundly affected the way in which the world is viewed, I connect these experiences with the image of the circle. I have tried to imply through the language, settings and organization of the poems relationships between seemingly incongruous events which one is often unaware of. …
The Religious Significance Of Vision And Blindness In Milton's Poetic Works, Elizabeth T. Spiers
The Religious Significance Of Vision And Blindness In Milton's Poetic Works, Elizabeth T. Spiers
Undergraduate University Honors Capstones
Blindness has been used in everything from the Bible to secular works, generally using blindness as examples of healing, spiritual illumination, and the like. John Milton, a blind author, frequently references his blindness in his works. He uses blindness as a concept as a literary device. This thesis aims to show the religious significance of sight and blindness as shown in some of Milton's works. Two sonnets, "When I Consider How My Light is Spent" and "To Syriack Skinner on His Blindness", the drama Samson Agonistes, and the epic poem Paradise Lost are analyzed.
An Analysis Of The Six Military-Dominated Political Cycles In El Salvador Between 1931 And 1979, Thomas Ramon Rookard
An Analysis Of The Six Military-Dominated Political Cycles In El Salvador Between 1931 And 1979, Thomas Ramon Rookard
Dissertations and Theses
A comparative study of the cycles of military-political power in El Salvador between 1931 and 1979 indicates that the country was convulsed six times by political struggle. A pattern emerged wherein the military asserted itself as maintainer of the status quo each time that repression of, or concession to, the masses threatened the economic and political balance.
The First Wandering Preachers, Laura Mellinger
The First Wandering Preachers, Laura Mellinger
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis attempts to trace the origins of the wandering preachers who appeared around 1100 in Europe. These were men who took it upon themselves to wander through towns am countryside, preaching a variety of messages wherever they from an audience. They are of interest in prefiguring St Francis' style, and in exemplifying the ramification of voluntary poverty styles which formed their context. They are also important for their central role in various movements of popular piety.
Bertolt Brecht And The Bible, Clara Martha Baker
Bertolt Brecht And The Bible, Clara Martha Baker
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis presents evidence which supports Bertolt Brecht's oft-quoted statement that the Bible was the book which exerted the greatest influence upon his writings. While Brecht's early works, Die Bibel (1913), and Die Dreigroschenoper (1928), serve as the main examples, there are also references to biblical allusions from a number of his other writings and some of his poetry. There is general information on Brecht's religious background and on his extensive biblical knowledge which enabled him to use the Bible as one of his principal sources. Brecht's manner of usage and adaptation of religious and biblical material to suit his …
What We Bury: Poems And Epilogues, James Harry Nicholas Martin
What We Bury: Poems And Epilogues, James Harry Nicholas Martin
Senior Scholar Papers
The manuscript, What We Bury: Poems and Epilogue, consists of two major parts. The first is comprised of eighteen poems, selected from the thirty-two that I had written by the end of March. Included in the eighteen, in accordance with what I had stated to be one of my aims in undertaking this project, are three poems written out of inherited forms: two, "The October Wind," (p.22) and "Wandering By the Sea For the First Time," (p.23) are sonnets and one, "Brewster Station, "(p.10) is a sestina that in the final draft was broken. Also adhering to one of my …
Classicism Versus Romanticism In The Modern, Matthew Clark Wolfe
Classicism Versus Romanticism In The Modern, Matthew Clark Wolfe
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Classicism and romanticism have reached a point of intense opposition. The result is a displacement of quality in the arts, particularly in music. This opposition leads to what Robert M. Pirsig defines as "thin art," art which lacks expression or underlying form. Coupled with this problem is the surge of technological developments over the past few decades. This surge is actually widening the gap between classicism and romanticism. Thus the problem of thin art will continue to grow if a balance and reuniting of the forces of classicism, romanticism and quality is not achieved.
