Shutendooji Emaki Pagoda, Phoebe Feng Mar 2024

Shutendooji Emaki Pagoda, Phoebe Feng

SOURCE Explore Program

I researched the Shutendooji Emaki and the Pagoda. For the Emaki, I further interpreted its artistic value and cultural traditions based on its existing documents. For the Pagoda, since there is no document left, and its root was nowhere to be found, I compared it with other ancient Chinese and Japanese artworks and architecture, successfully found an identical one on a Chinese auction website, and identified its origin. It dates back to 770 and is extremely valuable since it is the earliest example of woodblock printing. Finally, I put the two artifacts together and researched the development of the Japanese …

Syracuse And Basketball: A Love Story, Shane Holcombe Mar 2024

Syracuse And Basketball: A Love Story, Shane Holcombe

SOURCE Explore Program

I would sum up this project as one that challenged me as a student to take a deeper dive into hands on material that depicted Syracuse Athletics' history. I enjoyed that hands on experience and appreciated the opportunity to look at some materials I would not have been able to look at if it hadn't been for the SOURCE Explore program.

Thomas Szasz: Anti-Psychiatry, Leila Liang Mar 2024

Thomas Szasz: Anti-Psychiatry, Leila Liang

SOURCE Explore Program

My time with the SOURCE Explore Program has truly been an incredible experience. I presented on a topic completely different from what I initially planned- only because I read a couple lines from his manuscript! Examining pieces of the past compelled me connect what was written more than 50 years ago to public opinions of the present. Is the "Szaszian" view now obsolete? What was his impact on society? Was he a good person? I aimed to answer these questions through my research.

A Case Study Of An Atypical Perspective On The First World War, Patrick Riley Mar 2024

A Case Study Of An Atypical Perspective On The First World War, Patrick Riley

SOURCE Explore Program

I came into the source with the big topic of the Treaty of Versailles. I eventually found an article that presented a perspective advocating for the winners to be careful in how harshly they punish Germany after their victory. I decided to switch the focus of my presentation to solely understanding this article. Early on, I found that his opinion was very unusual, so I invested in the usual opinion from the time period. I then spent some time understanding the meaning of the article and explaining why it was controversial for the time. Lastly, I looked at my research …

Research Methods Used In The Rodney Gilbert Papers And The Chen Chi Papers (1940-1960), Alyssa Tran

SOURCE Explore Program

Working with the SOURCE Explore program I was able to work with the Rodney Gilbert and Chen Chi Papers. Both of which are different in nature but aim to contrast the Asian American Experience of those already in America versus those who are from mainland China aiming to pursue higher education in the United States. By studying respected artwork from Chen Chi and analyzing the recommendation letters from Rodney Gilbert I was able to see how Americans viewed foreigners during the periods 1940-1960. I was also able to understand the history of the world at this time and it has …

Walt Whitman: Intentions And Interpretations, Lance Watson Mar 2024

Walt Whitman: Intentions And Interpretations, Lance Watson

SOURCE Explore Program

In the process of analyzing an author’s work, we often make assumptions about their intentions. For famous and influential authors such as Walt Whitman, widely varied theories about intentions abound. In my research, I sought to compare some of these theories with resources outside of Whitman’s work itself. By looking at the letters Whitman had received and saved, as well as the edits he had made to his writing, I attempted to create a more holistic analysis of the intentions Whitman brought into his work.

Turner, Joyce, Negin Nader Bazrafkan

Bronx Jewish History Project

Mrs. Joyce Turner was born in 1948 as Joyce Herzfeld and grew up at 364 East 170th Street in a one-bedroom apartment with her parents and younger sister. Her parents had decided to live in the Bronx due to the proximity to their other family members until most of them had decided to begin moving out. The neighborhood she grew up in was primarily Jewish but became more diversified as she grew older and saw much diversity within the schools. During her early childhood, Mrs. Turner attended Public School 53 for elementary school, located on 167th Street, and remembers walking …

Women Guitar Orchestra Conductors, 1885 To Present, Part 1, Mariette Stephenson Mar 2024

Women Guitar Orchestra Conductors, 1885 To Present, Part 1, Mariette Stephenson

Music Faculty Publications

Passion, innovation, musicianship: these are reflected in the careers and offerings of women and the guitar. As I continue my research on women’s contributions to guitar orchestras, I became interested in discovering how many women have led guitar orchestras since they began in the 1800’s and learn what women today are experiencing in this role. Guitar orchestras have played an important role in many musicians’ development throughout its history, but unfortunately women have been often unacknowledged and under-represented in this ensemble format’s leadership roles.

This article includes a list I have compiled of women guitar orchestra conductors (past/present), will discuss …

Which Characteristics Do Religious School Administrators Value In Teachers? Experimental Evidence From The Global Christian School Sector, Alison Johnson, Matthew H. Lee, Albert Cheng Mar 2024

Which Characteristics Do Religious School Administrators Value In Teachers? Experimental Evidence From The Global Christian School Sector, Alison Johnson, Matthew H. Lee, Albert Cheng

Education Reform Faculty and Graduate Students Publications

Research shows that teacher quality is the most important school-related input correlated with student success. In religious private schools, teachers do not merely influence academic outcomes; they may also play a role in spiritual formation. Religious school administrators report that their faith informs their hiring decisions. However, little research has examined the ways that religious school administrators choose individuals to place in teaching positions. In this study, we use conjoint analysis to experimentally examine the hiring preferences of 170 Christian school administrators. We find that having modest (compared to below-average) academic achievement and qualifications or extensive (compared to limited) experience …

At The Intersection Of Religion, Spirituality, And Clinical Psychology: A Conversation With Two Jewish Psychologists, Robert A. Demayo, David A. Levy

Psychology Division Scholarship

This article presents a dialogue between two Jewish psychologists who share their respective personal and professional journeys on how spirituality and religious affiliation impacts their work as clinicians. They address the following questions: How would you identify your cultural background with respect to your religious or spiritual history and identity? How do you manage the competing demands of respecting both individual cultural identity and group cultural identity? How did your early experiences with Judaism influence your professional practice? What were your earliest academic influences on the question of spirituality in psychology? How have religion and spirituality manifested in your clinical …

Realizing The Sustainability Of Portfolio Assessment In Second-Language Writing, Pauline Mak, Kevin M. Wong Mar 2024

Realizing The Sustainability Of Portfolio Assessment In Second-Language Writing, Pauline Mak, Kevin M. Wong

Education Division Scholarship

Portfolio assessment, as an alternative writing assessment approach, has received growing attention in the past few decades. Although the benefits of portfolio assessment are well validated, there is a dearth of empirical research on how portfolio assessment can be sustained over time and the support teachers need to sustain portfolio assessment practice in their teaching contexts. To fill this significant void, the present study examines the influences that contribute to the sustainability of portfolio assessment in second-language writing. Drawing on data from interviews with the principal, English department chair and four English teachers from one elementary school in Hong Kong, …

Is It Gonna Be Fun?, Kim Tomlinson Mar 2024

Is It Gonna Be Fun?, Kim Tomlinson

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

I am a multidisciplinary artist working across digital and analog forms of printmaking, installation, playing, drawing, and writing. I incorporate elements of humor, autobiography, and nostalgic pop culture references to tell stories and facilitate connections.

At the heart of my work is the desire to be seen and feel connected. This starts with self reflection and building a personal archive of important references and symbols. Through recurring characters rooted in personal and historical pop culture references, I incorporate layers of complexity and inside jokes into the work. Humor is an essential tool to maintain levity, engage participants, and challenge traditional …

In This Time And Place, Christy Aggens Mar 2024

In This Time And Place, Christy Aggens

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

I seek out and spend time in relatively wild outdoor locations and create art based on my observations. The resulting work explores time and place, while the creation of the work increases my engagement with the environment. This process serves as a reminder that time is relative and life itself is continuous.

I start by finding time in locations where nature has been given a chance to thrive and where the sound of human activity is at a minimum. During these retreats, I use my senses to absorb information and document the experience by journaling, making recordings, taking photographs, drawing, …

Schull, Rebecca, Negin Nader Bazrafkan

Bronx Jewish History Project

Rebecca Schull, born in 1929, recalls her early life in the Sholem Aleichem Houses in the Bronx where her family lived in the predominantly Jewish community. Her father was a lawyer who later worked for the American Technion Society, and her mother was a dietician raised in Tel Aviv, who studied quantity cooking at Columbia. Many members of her family were Zionists, her uncle was the artist Nachum Gutman and her grandfather the writer Simcha Ben Zion. She remembers the pleasant communal atmosphere of the Sholem Aleichem Houses, where socialism, communism and Yiddishism was commonplace. Her childhood was marked by …

Suffering Juicebox, Janelle O'Malley Mar 2024

Suffering Juicebox, Janelle O'Malley

Graduate Artistry Projects and Performances

Suffering Juicebox investigates the confluences of nostalgia, trauma and identity making by means of sculpture and performance. Creating pieces with built layers of material and found objects Suffering Juicebox takes shape through collecting, forming, layering, petrifying, erasing and reimagining. Pieces are assembled into scenes attempting to rebuild what cannot be obtained. The objects collected and used are metaphors for the memories we accumulate.

Suffering Juicebox explores how gender and identity are created through layers of memory, nostalgia and trauma. Nostalgia’s etymology comes from the greek words nostos meaning “return home” and algos meaning “pain”, and together the word means homesickness. …

Applications Of Information Literacy To Teaching Independent Music Analysis, Katrina Roush Mar 2024

Applications Of Information Literacy To Teaching Independent Music Analysis, Katrina Roush

School of Music Faculty Publications

Undergraduate and graduate music students learn many tools beneficial for music analysis, and they practice applying these tools to music in their music theory classes. However, they often struggle to perform useful analysis on their own without the guidance of an instructor. They can have trouble understanding that analysis should communicate their personal interpretation of a work, and they may not realize that independent analysis usually requires some preparatory work (analytical research),such as discovering if others have analyzed the work and learning new analytical methods. This article shows that there is a strong connection between various steps in the music-analytical …

Deontic Meta-Rules, Francesco Olivieri, Guido Governatori, Matteo Cristani, Antonino Rotolo, Abdul Sattar Mar 2024

Deontic Meta-Rules, Francesco Olivieri, Guido Governatori, Matteo Cristani, Antonino Rotolo, Abdul Sattar

Centre for Computational Law (2022-2025)

The use of meta-rules in logic, i.e., rules whose content includes other rules, has recently gained attention in the setting of non-monotonic reasoning: a first logical formalisation and efficient algorithms to compute the (meta)-extensions of such theories were proposed in Olivieri et al. (2021, Computing defeasible meta-logic. In JELIA 2021, LNCS, vol. 12678, pp. 69-84. Springer.). This work extends such a logical framework by considering the deontic aspect. The resulting logic will not just be able to model policies but also tackle well-known aspects that occur in numerous legal systems. The use of Defeasible Logic to model meta-rules in the …

From Body To World: Empathy And The Transformative Power Of Cinematic Imagination, Isabel Jaén Portillo Mar 2024

From Body To World: Empathy And The Transformative Power Of Cinematic Imagination, Isabel Jaén Portillo

World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations

The transformative power of fiction has been acknowledged since antiquity (Jaén and Simon, 2012) and technologies such as cinematography have amplified it. This power resides in its capacity to move us, to change our emotional states. Moreover, the audiovisual and narrative strategies employed in film fictions allow us to experience emotions not only intensely but also safely. Our participatory responses are both elicited and modulated by the fictional “crafted” quality of the stories that we witness on the screen. What happens before our eyes does not pose a threat to us and does not need our intervention. Yet, …
