Centrifugal Forces Impacting Urbanization In The Eastern Mediterranean During Roman And Early Islamic Times, Øystein S. Labianca Mar 2024

Centrifugal Forces Impacting Urbanization In The Eastern Mediterranean During Roman And Early Islamic Times, Øystein S. Labianca

Faculty Publications

My goal with this essay is to make the existence of a distinctive Levantine cultural paradigm a lens through which to examine long-term patterns of urbanization and cultural change in the Eastern Mediterranean—focusing especially on present-day Israel, Jordan and the Palestinian territories. Inspired by the agenda and approach of global history, the essay is an attempt to highlight a number of salient features of societal formation processes in this region that set them apart from such processes in the heartlands of ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. The paradigm holds that societal formation dynamics in the Levant have been dominated more by …

Analyzing And Understanding America’S Foreign Policy Decisions And Strategies Throughout The Bosnian War, Hope Rhind

Global Studies Student Scholarship

This paper explores the evolution of American foreign policy in the Balkans in the years preceding the Dayton Accords. Specifically, it examines the progression from America’s position of nonintervention and reluctance to engage to a role of leadership in ending the conflict. Key factors discussed include the inadequacy of early U.S. policies in the region, mounting pressure to end the violent conflict, the value placed on the NATO organization and relationship by the Clinton administration, and the unwavering commitment to keep American troops out of the conflict. This paper seeks to highlight the intricate interplay between international commitments and domestic …

Make It Funky For Me: Black British Women’S Explorations Of Britishness, Womanhood, And Artistry Through 2000s Music, Monique Charles Mar 2024

Make It Funky For Me: Black British Women’S Explorations Of Britishness, Womanhood, And Artistry Through 2000s Music, Monique Charles

Sociology Faculty Articles and Research

2000s Britain was an interesting and expansive time musically for Black Britain (Bradley 2013), as underground music gained traction in mainstream spaces. This article examines the context in which Black British women were able to cross over into the British mainstream and explores how U.K. garage and U.K. funky artists expressed their creativity, autonomy, womanhood, Blackness, and Britishness. Female U.K. garage artists set a precedent in the creation of “new” diverse identities for Black British women artists, but artists in both underground and mainstream music scenes were also forced to contend with restrictive and harmful misogynoir.

“Reciprocal Illumination” Of Hinduism, Human Rights, And The Comparative Study Of Religion: Arvind Sharma’S Contributions, Nancy M. Martin

Religious Studies Faculty Articles and Research

Arvind Sharma has made immensely significant contributions in the fields of both comparative religion and the study of Hinduism through his methodology of “reciprocal illumination” and his prominent role in international conversations on women and religion, religion and human rights, freedom of religion, and religious tolerance and conflict. Aware of the power of religion and its negative valuation, especially post-September 11, he displays a deep commitment to fostering interreligious understanding, arguing for religion as an essential and positive partner in envisioning and actualizing human flourishing, upholding human dignity, and engaging in global ethical cooperation, and equally he demonstrates Hinduism’s potential …

Mary In Catholic Education: Reflections From The Community, University Of Dayton. Marian Library

The Society of Mary opened its first school in 1819 in Bordeaux, France, and education continues to be a key element of the Marianist mission. Written by the author of the landmark book The Wages of Whiteness and one of the key figures in the critical study of race and racism in America, An Ordinary White is the life story of the historian and radical American writer, David Roediger.

With wry wit and keen observation, Roediger chronicles his intellectual and political evolution from growing up in his southern Midwest sundown town to becoming a leading figure in working-class history and Whiteness studies. Trinity And Creation: Bavinck On The Vestigia Trinitatis, Gayle E. Doornbos Mar 2024

Trinity And Creation: Bavinck On The Vestigia Trinitatis, Gayle E. Doornbos

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

Engaging recent scholarship on Bavinck’s revitalization of the vestigia trinitatis and its connection to the organic motif, this essay identifies and examines two aspects of Bavinck’s account that remain underdeveloped with scholarship on this topic. First, it explores the lingering importance triads within Bavinck’s account of the vestigia. Bavinck may have developed a primarily non-numerical account of the vestigia, but he still acknowledges the place of triadic analogies, especially in humanity. Second, it contextualizes Bavinck’s appropriation of the vestigia within his understanding of creation as relative, divine, self-communication in order to illuminate how creation can bear the imprint of the …

Science Fiction: From Silly To Surreal, Rowel Jimenez Mar 2024

Science Fiction: From Silly To Surreal, Rowel Jimenez

SOURCE Explore Program

Science Fiction: From Silly to Surreal is a presentation outlining the evolution of science fiction from the 1930s to the modern day. The progress of the genre is shown through an analysis of old movies and TV shows from WWII America, demonstrating how science fiction was seen as a genre for children. During the 1950s and 1960s, the library's archives attracted significant research interest. In the 1950s and 1960s, the majority of the research concerning the library's archives came in the form of articles. These articles were produced by Mercury Press Records, which then made The Magazine of Fantasy & …

Linda Troeller Papers, Miral Ali

SOURCE Explore Program

This project was born through a genuine interest in Linda Troeller and her work after I learned about her through the archives. Troeller’s art is a direct reflection of her inner state and my exploration was focused on her motivations. What prompted her to create such a raw, unfiltered, untarnished collection of the human condition, and how did she do it?

Oneida Community Collection: Through The Lens Of A Murder Trial, Franny Porreca Mar 2024

Oneida Community Collection: Through The Lens Of A Murder Trial, Franny Porreca

SOURCE Explore Program

For my SOURCE Explore project with SCRC, I looked at their collection on the Oneida Community. More specifically, I sifted through some community progress reports that documented various happenings that were important to them from 1848 through 1874. From there, I narrowed my scope and one individual who was formally a member of the Oneida, Charles Guiteau. He was responsible for shooting President Andrew Garfield, and the second half of my presentation was focused on the Supreme Court transcriptions from his trial.

A Menu And Its Implications On Filipino And American Culture, Caitlyn Begosa Mar 2024

A Menu And Its Implications On Filipino And American Culture, Caitlyn Begosa

SOURCE Explore Program

I analyzed a collection of menus collected from around 1950s to 1960s from the Kay Shaw Nelson Papers. I decided to focus my research around a menu from the Philippines. From here, I analyzed the graphic design and word choice of the menu to come to the conclusion that it was targeted towards an American or English-speaking tourist audience. Then, I researched the history of food tourism in the Philippines and how it helped flourish the country’s economy. Although the Filipino menu from Nelson’s collection inspired the brunt of my studies, I also noticed the small amount of Asian menus …

Exploration Of Silhouettes: 1960s Through 2010s, Annabelle Reichelt

SOURCE Explore Program

I did my research project on fashion and trends and observed how they change over time. I know from previous knowledge that trends come in cycles, so I used this knowledge to choose other time periods that would have similar trends. The collection of photos I looked at from the archive is from the 1960s and shows a runway show for a charity event. Since this is from the 1960s, I looked at Vogue Runway, which is an archive website that has many high fashion shows going back to the 80s, to collect photos from shows from the 90s and …
