Student Perspectives On Increasing Visibility Of Las Vegas African American History, Ericka Marielle Garces, Nicole Garcia-Contreras, Alfredo Lim Oct 2024

Student Perspectives On Increasing Visibility Of Las Vegas African American History, Ericka Marielle Garces, Nicole Garcia-Contreras, Alfredo Lim

Communication Studies Student Research

Photographer Clinton Wright documented the everyday lives and experiences of the African American community in Las Vegas' Historic Westside from 1964 to 1971. He later donated his collection of photographic negatives to the Special Collections and Archives at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Libraries. Although the collection is open to the public, physical access is limited to the Special Collections Reading Room, which may restrict usability for some researchers and community members. This project highlights the importance of digitization and metadata workflows in improving access to and visibility of archival materials.

"Bp", Gavin Fryer Oct 2024

"Bp", Gavin Fryer

Bronx Jewish History Project

BP was born in 1937 in Pelham Parkway, and moved to the Parkchester housing development in 1941, where he grew up. He recalls the convenient amenities such as nearby shopping and playgrounds, but notes the occasional shortages and power outages connected to World War II. He also shares his experiences with antisemitism, citing the 4.7% quota on Jewish tenants and taunts from children while coming home from school.

BP led a busy, studious childhood at JHS 98 and the Bronx High School of Science, from which he graduated in 1954. He continued his education at New York University’s University Heights …

Gastronomical Platonism, Marco Panza Oct 2024

Gastronomical Platonism, Marco Panza

MPP Published Research

The paper presents a Platonist approach to the art of cooking, based on a crucial distinction between taste and flavor. Being Platonist in cooking is surely not the same as being so in mathematics and logic. Göran is not so in these fields, but I'm confident, that as many mathematicians are spontaneously inclined to live in a Platonist heaven, the sophisticated cook and eater that Göran is will be pleased to imagine with me a Platonist realm of flavors.

From Living Heritage Values To Value-Based Policymaking: Exploring New Indicators For Abu Dhabi’S Sustainable Development, Elena Raevskikh, Giovanna Di Mauro, Maxime Jaffré Oct 2024

From Living Heritage Values To Value-Based Policymaking: Exploring New Indicators For Abu Dhabi’S Sustainable Development, Elena Raevskikh, Giovanna Di Mauro, Maxime Jaffré

All Works

This exploratory study offers an analysis of Abu Dhabi’s living heritage ecosystem. It borrows from approaches predominantly used in the healthcare field and develops a value-based framework that provides a broader understanding of heritage and its integration into innovation, economic development, and societal change in Abu Dhabi. This framework includes three steps: (1) identification of the individual heritage values (‘heritage drivers’) through ethnographic interviews; (2) aggregation of the dynamics impacting the practical realization of these values and relative identification of value-based policymaking areas; and (3) suggestion of an approach that builds indicators to assess the impact of living heritage policies …

The Fight For Purity: Hiram Evans And The Second Ku Klux Klan, Ava Jackson Oct 2024

The Fight For Purity: Hiram Evans And The Second Ku Klux Klan, Ava Jackson

English: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

The Klu Klux Klan of the 1920s, known as the second Klan, built its three to six million members quicker than any previous group. The Klan continued the traditions of earlier generations, including the notorious robes, masks, and racist attitudes toward African Americans. In addition, anti-Semitism and anti-Catholicism grew, which further increased animosity and reshaped what it meant to be a terrorist in America. Through the leadership of Hiram Wesley Evans, a small-practice dentist, who quickly rose in the ranks to later become Imperial Wizard of the Klan in 1922, the Klan was altered in a way never seen before. …

Bridging Thought And Action: History, The Digital Humanities, And Building The Foundations Of Asian/American Political Thought, Vivian Yan-Gonzalez Oct 2024

Bridging Thought And Action: History, The Digital Humanities, And Building The Foundations Of Asian/American Political Thought, Vivian Yan-Gonzalez

Asian American Studies Faculty Articles and Research

This article argues that understanding the historical contours of Asian American electoral engagement provides an essential foundation for studying Asian/American political thought. However, historians have tended to adopt a broad understanding of "politics" beyond traditional civic and electoral politics, due to limited historical sources on Asian American electoral engagement and the longstanding interest among Asian Americanist scholars in alternative politics. I reintroduce Asian American electoral history as a vital and viable subject of study by exploring how scholars can use digital humanities tools and methods to build the archives of Asian American politics and to explore new insights and questions.

Bereavement, Abbey Schmidtgall Oct 2024

Bereavement, Abbey Schmidtgall

English Student Projects

This piece was written to answer the question 'If we never had to feel bad emotions, would we take that opportunity?' I wanted to explore how all of our emotions contribute to our way of being and are necessary to develop us as people. I hope to flesh out this work into a longer piece of fiction someday, but right now it is a short story.

My Favorite Tree, Noelle Yew Oct 2024

My Favorite Tree, Noelle Yew

English Student Projects

My story is about a tree that hates the spring. The tree is crotchety and doesn't enjoy the budding life that comes with the changing of the seasons. It enjoys winter, because it knows that winter is where it will always end up. The tree is bitter because it is so old. It has seen and experienced so much death in its life, that it hates the hope of life that spring brings with it. It has resigned itself to death and gloom.

Chains, Rianna Van Stempvoort Oct 2024

Chains, Rianna Van Stempvoort

English Student Projects

Struggling to attain perfection is to be enchained and imprisoned by your own mind. It is to look at a blank piece of paper and imagine all that you could do wrong, rather than all that you could do right. Perfection comes in the form of constant erasing, frustration, and questioning; however, it is by daring to push against these chains that you can find true freedom. And it is when you discover this freedom that your entire world will change and you will no longer be bound by chains.

The Rending, Ashlyn Hanson Oct 2024

The Rending, Ashlyn Hanson

"The Rending" follows a woman’s healing journey as the Lord helps her confront her fragmented self. With His guidance, she watches her various identities peel away, revealing a small girl representing her core self. Through God's compassionate touch, the woman undergoes a transformative process of reintegration, ultimately accepting the broken parts of her, but more importantly, discovering the profound love and acceptance that the Lord has always held for her, completely independent of any piece of her identity.
