Glove Compartment: Antedatings And The Ultimate (Albeit Indirect) Role Of Racing Driver Dorothy Levitt (1882-1922) In The Origin Of The Term, Gerald Leonard Cohen
Arts, Languages and Philosophy Faculty Research & Creative Works
At first glance it might seem the only thing to say about ‘glove compartment’ is that its original purpose was to hold gloves. And indeed, OED3 presents no discussion on the term, merely setting forth two attestations (1939, 1959). But questions do arise, e.g.,
1) Why was it so important to have gloves in the car?
2) If gloves served the practical purpose of preventing hands from numbing in cold weather, why is the first OED attestation so late?
3) Can any earlier attestations be found?
4) Can anyone be determined to have played a role in the naming of …

Painting In Indigo To See Freedom, Rochelle D. Johnson
Master of Fine Arts in Visual Arts
This thesis explores my artistic journey of creating work that centers on personal identity and the complexities of history and representation. Through research and creative practice, I have moved away from making art for an external viewer, turning to a deeper internal exploration of my lived experiences. Focusing on the color indigo as a personal and historical symbol, I challenge conventional portrayals of race in art, particularly those rooted in Western ideals. By reflecting on modernism, the human figure, portraiture, and the use of color, I articulate how my art dialogues with history while expressing the freedom to define my …

Allusive Allusions, Daniel T. Hanson
Theology Undergraduate Work
This paper attempts to determine whether David or his editor in 1 Sam 24:11b–12a is alluding to the judge Jephtha in Judg 11:27, and if so, what implications this intertextual allusion would have on both diachronic and synchronic studies. To accomplish this goal, the author utilizes four of the criteria proposed by Richard B. Hays in Echoes of Scripture in the Letters of Paul—namely, the criteria of verbal parallel, availability of source to the author (date), theme, and recurrence of author to the same section. The author examines the degree of verbal parallel in light of the hermeneutical structuring principle …

Reflections On Linear B, (Part 5): Linear B Sign 50 From Egyptian Hieroglyph For "Hair"?, Gerald Leonard Cohen
Reflections On Linear B, (Part 5): Linear B Sign 50 From Egyptian Hieroglyph For "Hair"?, Gerald Leonard Cohen
Arts, Languages and Philosophy Faculty Research & Creative Works
Linear B sign 50, pronounced /pu/, is almost identical to one of the Egyptian hieroglyphs for ‘hair,’ and the sign’s pronunciation /pu/ might have been taken from a Greek word connected with hair, viz., ampuks ‘headband.’ The headband was part of ancient Egyptian royal head-dress, and most importantly, it was worn by the goddess Maat to fasten an ostrich feather (symbol of truth, order, justice) to her head. A pattern taking shape for me is that several Linear B signs of Egyptian origin are connected with the Egyptian gods, and Linear B sign 50 may fit into this pattern.

Alfred Russel Wallace Notes 32. Wallace On The Tigers Of Singapore, Charles H. Smith
Alfred Russel Wallace Notes 32. Wallace On The Tigers Of Singapore, Charles H. Smith
Faculty/Staff Personal Papers
Historian John van Wyhe has written a good deal on Alfred Russel Wallace’s travels in the Malay Archipelago in the 1850s and 1860s, in so doing coming to a number of generally derogative surmises on Wallace’s thoughts and collecting efforts that disagree with the conclusions made by other scholars. In this work one example of such treatment is given, concerning Wallace’s estimation of the number of persons in Singapore attacked by tigers over the middle years of that century.

The Al Harris Library received a donation of the archive of retired astronaut General Thomas P. Stafford. The continually growing collection includes over 200 boxes containing NASA reports, professional and personal pictures, videos, and more. Part of the collection is the approximately 700 books used for research by Stafford and his co-author Michael Cassutt to write the memoir We Have Capture: Tom Stafford and the Space Race (2002). Half of these books are a collection of Soviet-era Russia (USSR) space program books and periodicals written in Russian. Michael Cassutt has characterized the books as the most comprehensive collection about the …

The Epistemic Role Of Ai Decision Support Systems: Neither Superiors, Nor Inferiors, Nor Peers, Rand Hirmiz
The Epistemic Role Of Ai Decision Support Systems: Neither Superiors, Nor Inferiors, Nor Peers, Rand Hirmiz
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Despite the importance of discussions over the epistemic role that artificially intelligent decision support systems ought to play, there is currently a lack of these discussions in both the AI literature and the epistemology literature. My goal in this paper is to rectify this by proposing an account of the epistemic role of AI decision support systems in medicine and discussing what this epistemic role means with regard to how these systems ought to be utilized. In particular, I argue that AI decision support systems are not epistemic superiors, inferiors, or peers. Instead, I recommend that they be classified in …
