Nine Lives Of A Hero: Chinsetsu Yumiharizuki And The Idolization Of Minamoto No Tametomo, Roger Thomas

Faculty Publications – Languages, Literatures, and Cultures

This study examines Takizawa Bakin's (1767-1848) novel Chinsetsu Yumiharizuki in terms of its importance, both among his prodigious works and among Japanese early modern historical romances. It analyzes his use of sources and discusses the role this novel played in popular perceptions of Ryukyu among Edo-period Japanese, as well as in the persistent belief in the historicity of legends that Minamoto no Tametomo (1139-1170) actually visited that southern island kingdom.

Against Acceptance Theories Of Social Norms, John Lawless Jan 2025

Against Acceptance Theories Of Social Norms, John Lawless

Faculty Publications - Philosophy

According to some theories, a rule counts as a social norm within a community only if the members of the community generally accept the rule. This is a conceptual claim: proponents of these theories do not deny that a rule can structure people's interactions and relationships even though few people accept it; they simply deny that such a rule should count as a social norm. I argue that this approach draws arbitrary boundaries that cut through explanatorily significant categories with no theoretical payoff. We typically invoke social norms either to explain empirical phenomena (e.g. what people do) or moral …

The Influence Of Shopping Context And Anthropocentric Bias On Consumer Preferences For Human And Ai Designers In Fashion, Dooyoung Choi, Ha Kyung Lee, Christina Soyoung Song, Ji Young Lee

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Faculty Publications

This study explores how shopping contexts (hedonic vs. utilitarian) influence consumer preferences for AI- vs. human-designed fashion products. In Study 1, participants with hedonic motivations preferred human-designed items, while those with utilitarian motivations preferred AI-designed products, supporting the hypothesis that shopping context affects designer preferences. Study 2 further investigates the mediation of competence-warmth traits in designer preferences and the moderation of anthropocentric bias. It finds that hedonic shopping contexts increase the desire for warmth-related traits, leading to a preference for human designers, while utilitarian contexts favor competence-related traits and AI designs. Additionally, individuals with higher anthropocentric biases showed stronger preferences …

Promesas Incumplidas: The Reconfiguration Of Gendered Expectations And Relationships During The Bracero Program (1942-1964), Adriana Justo Ortiz Jan 2025

Promesas Incumplidas: The Reconfiguration Of Gendered Expectations And Relationships During The Bracero Program (1942-1964), Adriana Justo Ortiz

Undergraduate Research Awards

The Bracero Program led to the breakdown of domestic roles, disruptions of female and Braceros’ partnerships with women, and the creation of new friendships among the male Braceros themselves. After the Braceros left for their work contracts in the United States, Mexican women took on additional responsibilities that were customarily done by their husband. In contrast, the Braceros had to undertake domestic chores in their temporary labor camps that their wives would have generally done in Mexico. Because Anglo- American employers and entrepreneurs, specifically those from Tulare, California, as demonstrated by the work of historian Ana Elizabeth Rosas, had certain …

It is undeniable that the citizens of Mexico and the United States of America processed the Mexican American War as it occurred in exceedingly different ways, and wished to remember it differently. This thesis will delve deeper into the Mexican narrative that was constructed during and in the immediate aftermath of the war, about the war, and will highlight some of the most salient differences.

Doing History With The Saints, Marcus O’Donnell Prof Jan 2025

Doing History With The Saints, Marcus O’Donnell Prof

Staff Scholarship - Australia & Dubai

The portfolio and practice reflection presents four pieces from, Queer Saints (2025), an evolving new series of photogravure prints. The series plays with the covering and uncovering of the saint’s body and the collision of the erotic and ecstatic in Christian iconography. Each print takes a particular saint and layers a coupling of images together, creating condensed narratives of desire. The layered images haunt one another ghosting both spirit and flesh. This reflection draws on Elizabeth Freeman’s idea of “erotohistoriography” to explore ways of doing history with the body in visual arts practice.

Ethnicity And Imitatio In Isidore Of Seville, Erica Buchberger Jan 2025

Ethnicity And Imitatio In Isidore Of Seville, Erica Buchberger

History Faculty Publications

Analyses of imitatio imperii commonly focus on the ceremonial and symbolic aspects of the Roman Empire—victory celebrations, creation of a capital, ceremonial dress and language, imagery on coins, and legal pronouncements—not ethnicity. Perhaps one reason is that in modern English, ‘imitation’ carries derogatory connotations of uninspired copying that remove the agency and creativity of the imitator. Imitated items and practices are seen as poor copies of originals, the latter of which are much more worthy of attention.2 Under this definition, one would expect an imitator of Rome to claim to be Roman, resembling Athaulf’s claim that Goths were unable to …

Writing Back To Empire: Anticolonial Petitioning And Decolonisation In Postwar British West Africa, 1945–1960, Bright Alozie

Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article reexamines petition writing as a strategic form of anticolonial resistance and negotiation in British West Africa between 1945 and 1960. Focusing on Nigeria and the Gold Coast (now Ghana), it argues that petitions – often regarded as apolitical or ineffective – were in fact deeply political texts through which colonised individuals asserted rights, challenged imperial authority, and participated in shaping decolonisation discourse. Drawing on new archival petitions, colonial correspondence, and administrative records, the study analyzes how a wide range of African actors – including trade unions, veterans, women’s organisations, and youth groups – appropriated colonial bureaucratic norms to …

Fungal Recycling, Arden Yale, Alannah Ridgway Jan 2025

Fungal Recycling, Arden Yale, Alannah Ridgway

Student Research Design & Innovation Symposium

Fungal recycling is a developing technique that turns garbage into food. To do this, the presenters created a new method of growing fungi of all different types (e.g. white oyster, lion's mane, etc.) and inoculating them into bags. These bags are sterile and contain a few key ingredients: coco coir, grain pellets, and shredded cardboard boxes. These boxes are taken from anywhere, mostly from lab equipment. Using the coco coir and grain pellets as a "starter", the fungi used the cardboard as a growing medium, literally growing food from trash. The technique is currently being refined. This project could bring …

Wearable Lanyard Acc For On-Demand Communication, Valerie Rosario, Rileigh Kearney, Hailey Soares, Kristen Martinez, Hannah Pereira

Student Research Design & Innovation Symposium

Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices help individuals experiencing challenges with verbal communication, including English language learners, individuals who are hard of hearing, on the autism spectrum, or those experiencing anxiety disorders. Current technologies include low-tech communication boards and complex mobile applications, but both of these offer little customization. Our prototypes integrate touch-sensing panels and small LCD screens into common wearables, like necklaces and lanyards, so that the ACC discretely blends in with everyday apparel and provides on-demand communication that is customizable to the individual user. The touch-sensing pads are sensory-friendly, and the LCD screens operate without sound to support …

Cannabis & Insomnia, Audrey Brown, Casey Fanning, Finnian Crozier, Keyanna Metts Jan 2025

Cannabis & Insomnia, Audrey Brown, Casey Fanning, Finnian Crozier, Keyanna Metts

Student Research Design & Innovation Symposium

As cannabis becomes more accessible and popular, it is important to know how it affects cannabis users and their sleep patterns. It is important to ask how cannabis impacts insomnia, and if there are negatives or positives of using cannabis to help insomnia. Many people use cannabis as an agent to help with insomnia. It is important to research and understand if it helps people sleep better or if it results in more struggles with insomnia. The data was collected with a digital, cross-sectional, quantitative survey given to 1,022 participants who were between the ages of 18-25 years old and …

The Forms Of Representation: How To Be A Kantian Realist, Willem A. Devries Jan 2025

The Forms Of Representation: How To Be A Kantian Realist, Willem A. Devries

Faculty Publications

Sellars argued that Kant did not make certain distinctions concerning space and time, and because of this adopted his transcendental idealism. Once these distinctions are made, the path to realism remains open. Sellars' argument is not entirely clear. This essay attempts to clarify the argument, showing why Sellars believed he could remain a scientific realist while also adopting a Kantian style epistemology.

In The Kingdom Of The Thunder Dragon: Happiness, History, And Environment In A Changing Bhutan, Betsy Bolton

English Literature Faculty Works

Landlocked, mountainous, and surrounded by global giants India and China, Bhutan has provided remarkable leadership on both climate action and human happiness, despite its pre-2023 status as a least-developed nation. Bhutan was the first country to be internationally recognized as carbon neutral; it is also the birthplace of “Gross National Happiness” (GNH), a pointed alternative to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) as a means of measuring the success of national policies in promoting citizens’ wellbeing. Yet Bhutan has also been a site of ethnic conflict, with roughly tens of thousands people displaced into refugee camps in the 1990s and eventually resettled …

“Windows For Witness: Dan Fishback’S Radical Access”, Alexandra Juhasz Jan 2025

“Windows For Witness: Dan Fishback’S Radical Access”, Alexandra Juhasz

Publications and Research

Dan Fishback’s Jewish crip aesthetic – art made within a framework of integrated access – is rooted in the human (or Jewish!) capacity to be generous and so much more. He expands our understandings of who is in the room, who is in the world, who is in our community, who lives at the same time as us but in a different way. This connection in his show between chronic illness and Palestine is not only about alienation it is about identification and solidarity.
