In Search Of A State, Maeve Glass

This article offers a legal history of one of America’s earliest campaigns of state legislative resistance: the effort in Massachusetts to protest the national government’s perceived dismantling of an old Atlantic commercial order from 1803 to 1815. To date, scholars have either condemned this protest as a dangerous harbinger of the Civil War or vindicated it as an inevitable and salutary extension of the Founding. This article steers a different course. By focusing on the evolving language of protest and the complex hybrid of ideas and material realities from which this language emerged, this article illuminates how Federalist leaders who …
Exploring The Impact Of Value Co-Creation Through Ai-Driven Chatbbots On Customer Repeat Purchases, Dooyoung Choi, Jaeha Lee
Exploring The Impact Of Value Co-Creation Through Ai-Driven Chatbbots On Customer Repeat Purchases, Dooyoung Choi, Jaeha Lee
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Faculty Publications
Drawing on the Stimulus-Organism-Response (S-O-R) framework, this study explores how perceived value co-creation during chatbot interactions influences customer repeat purchase intentions through cognitive, emotional, and social responses to chatbots. A survey of 220 participants revealed that perceived value co-creation significantly affected repeat purchase intentions, with cognitive evaluations, emotional reactions, and social value serving as key mediators. However, the direct effect of value co-creation on purchase intentions was not significant. The findings suggest that while value co-creation enhances consumer engagement, repeat purchases occur only when consumers experience positive cognitive, emotional, and social outcomes. Therefore, it is crucial for retailers to incorporate …
Quiet Resistance: Drawing On Covert Advocacy Research To Understand School Leadership Within The Current Anti-Trans Context, Alexandria Gribble, Erica Simpson, Meagan S. Richard
Quiet Resistance: Drawing On Covert Advocacy Research To Understand School Leadership Within The Current Anti-Trans Context, Alexandria Gribble, Erica Simpson, Meagan S. Richard
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Faculty Publications
Over the last few years, there has been a surge in anti-LGBTQIA+ and, specifically, anti-transgender, nonbinary, and gender non-conforming legislation. These laws target the rights of LGBTQIA+ students in K–12 schools, leading to policies censoring gender-inclusive curricula, mandating the outing of students, and restricting transgender students’ access to sports and facilities. The rapid emergence of these bills has outpaced research on how leaders—particularly justice-centred leaders—navigate these hostile policy contexts. Existing research taking a broader lens around leaders’ justice work in schools sheds light on how leaders engage in covert advocacy within complex and constraining contexts. However, understanding how leaders resist …
Literary Portraits Of World War I Tirailleurs Sénégalais: Lucie Cousturier's Des Inconnus Chez Moi (1920), And Raymond Escholier's Mahmadou Fofana (1928), Kathy Comfort
World Languages, Literatures and Cultures Faculty Publications and Presentations
The literary depictions of the tirailleurs s & eacute;n & eacute;galais, the West African French colonial troops who fought in World War I, in novels published during the conflict and in the interwar years were often little more than racist caricatures. Two works from the interwar period, Lucie Cousturier's Des Inconnus chez moi (1920) and Raymond Escholier's Mahmadou Fofana (1928), based on the friendships the respective authors established with West African troops during the Great War, provide a counterpoint to the degrading portrayals of the tirailleurs. Cousturier, a painter, taught French to soldiers at the hivernage camp next to her …
Narrowly Person-Affecting Axiology: A Reconsideration, Matthew D. Adler
Narrowly Person-Affecting Axiology: A Reconsideration, Matthew D. Adler
Faculty Scholarship
A narrowly person-affecting (NPA) axiology is an account of the moral ranking of outcomes such that the comparison of any two outcomes depends on the magnitude and weight of individuals’ well-being gains and losses between the two. This article systematically explores NPA axiology. It argues that NPA axiology yields an outcome ranking that satisfies three fundamental axioms: Pareto, Anonymity and, plausibly, Pigou-Dalton. The axiology is neutral to non-well-being considerations (desert); and (assuming well-being measurability) leads to the Repugnant Conclusion (RC). In short, NPA axiology provides a grounding for Paretian, equity-regarding welfarism, albeit one that includes the RC.
“The Old Lie”: The Effect Of Classical Heroism On The Wwi Soldier, Sage Fikse
“The Old Lie”: The Effect Of Classical Heroism On The Wwi Soldier, Sage Fikse
SPARK Symposium Presentations
Before the outbreak of World War I, poet Wilfred Owen studied Greek and Roman literature, which presented him with idealized notions of patriotism, glory, and sacrifice. Influenced by classical texts such as The Iliad and the writings of Horace, these ideals of heroism left him unprepared for the brutal realities of anonymous warfare and for what it meant to be a “hero” in the twentieth century. In his poem “Dulce et Decorum Est,” Owen draws on his classical education to challenge the romanticized ideals of heroic sacrifice and glory. However, through the poetic nature of his death, dying exactly one …

Public Art Coordination: Shaping The Irish Arts Landscape, Jennifer Haughton
Public Art Coordination: Shaping The Irish Arts Landscape, Jennifer Haughton
Doctoral
Appointing public art coordinators responsible and accountable for programming and commissioning in the public sphere is a growing trend internationally. My aim in this PhD thesis is to undertake an inquiry into the practice of how public art coordination facilitates artists in producing ambitious public art works. Appropriating Mary Parker Follett’s (1866–1933) concept of multiple leadership in addition to curatorial, rights, and management theory, I argue for an increased accommodation of public art coordination as a public leadership service arising from the construction sector. Adopting Ricoeurian hermeneutics alongside vignettes, my thesis constitutes a deep dive into the habitat and culture …
Puccini’S Manon: A Holistic Approach To Role Preparation And Execution, Sandra Oman Farren
Puccini’S Manon: A Holistic Approach To Role Preparation And Execution, Sandra Oman Farren
Doctoral
The fulcrum of this thesis is operatic role preparation and execution, an investigation into how the conscientious singer-actor can ‘become’ the character of ‘Manon’ in Giacomo Puccini’s 1893 opera, Manon Lescaut. Adopting a multi-stranded research strategy, encompassing traditional methodologies, a series of lived experience interviews with international operatic practitioners, and a survey of live performances in 2023–2024, the actuality of performing this complex role is considered, with recommendations and conclusions drawn from a multiplicity of sources.
Agency, Index & Process: Investigating The Role Of The Artist’S Body In Digital Sculpture Production, Alan Magee
Agency, Index & Process: Investigating The Role Of The Artist’S Body In Digital Sculpture Production, Alan Magee
Doctoral
Contemporary Digital Sculpture has emerged out of recent developments in digital art, 3d modelling and virtual modes of production. These advances range from the creation of more powerful software and hardware systems to the to nascent XR sectors, and the potential for materialisation through technologies such as 3d printing, laser-cutting, or CNC1 machining. However, critical discourse remains predominantly focused on the end product, often overlooking the embodied labour processes inherent in its creation. As revealed through indexical traces of the artist’s body, these processes encapsulate the gestures, actions and subjective agency of artistic activity. Consequently, with the limitations of digital …

Student Self-Evaluation As Assessment: A Reflective Tool For Ungraded Pedagogy, Jennifer Corby
Open Educational Resources
This Google Form-based self-evaluation tool is designed to support a student-centered, ungraded approach to assessment in an introductory political science course. Rooted in critical pedagogy and Universal Design for Learning principles, the form invites students to reflect honestly and thoroughly on their own work. For each assignment, students are asked to articulate the expectations, assess the extent of their engagement, and reflect on their learning. The tool reinforces metacognition, accountability, and democratic participation in the learning process.

[Introduction] "Hope is not like a lottery ticket you can sit on the sofa and clutch, feeling lucky. [...] Hope is an ax you break down doors with in an emergency." - Rebecca Solnit
In 2018, Cheryl Glenn wrote, "The work of feminist rhetorical historiography is far from done; in fact, it has just begun-and it is anchored in hope." Following Glenn, we explore hope in this cluster as a methodological imperative in the archives. Informed by theorists Paulo Freire, bell hooks, Rebecca Solnit, and Cornel West, the writers in this Cluster Conversation envision hope as a radical orientation toward …
‘‘I Am Not This, Not Here, This Time’’: Claudia Emerson’S Infusion Suite As A Compelling Account Of The Lived Experience Of Cancer, Chris Foss
English & Linguistics Articles
Claudia Emerson’s Infusion Suite section within her poetry collection Impossible Bottle is a significant contemporary literary representation of cancer. In this twelve-poem sequence, Emerson dispenses with the typical martial metaphors so often used to represent this lived experience. Instead, she focuses on more mundane everyday moments in a way that acknowledges and respects the humanity of all those at the treatment center—especially that of the patients. Emerson refuses to airbrush out the daunting, debilitating aspects of cancer, but she also preserves space for light and life.

[Introduction] Phillip H. Round's new book follows in a line of intellectual enquiries over the last 20 years, including Hilary Wyss’ Writing Indians (2003), Lisa Brooks’ The Common Pot (2008), my own Red Ink (2012), and Round's previous monograph, Removable Type (2010), that delve into the nature of the written word and how it worked within the context of settler colonialism to transform Indigenous lives on the North American continent. As established by these previous works of scholarship, western literacy was not the miraculous portal into civilization that settler colonial agents often purported it to be. Because Native peoples already …

In 2023, the U.S. Surgeon General warned the public of the current “loneliness epidemic” and its potential consequences on physical and mental health. One possible consequence of this epidemic is the growth of a movement defined by loneliness and isolation: the incel (“involuntary celibate”) movement. This warning presents a worrying glimpse at the future, as the incel movement, along with other parts of the manosphere, is one that espouses violently misogynist rhetoric which is intrinsically linked to right-wing extremism. While linguistic studies have been conducted on the speech of incels and other constituent movements of the manosphere, few of these …

Recent postwar recovery efforts have paved the way for reforms that advance women's participation in politics, inclusion in the economy, and access to justice. In this article, we show how a singular emphasis on gender reforms after war that are inattentive to other societal cleavages can leave various forms of marginalization in the shadows. Subnational interviews on the reverberations of gender reforms in five postwar countries expose three hierarchies that structure access to rights for war-affected communities. We reveal which violence is privileged, whose violence is privileged, and which responses are privileged from the perspectives of differently situated war-affected women, …

[Introduction] If the long hot summer of 2020 marked a season of racial reckoning, it was also—now visible in retrospect—a moment for processing with the relation between digital technologies and power. 8:46 after all names not only an event, a murder, but the title of a short digital film. A film, moreover, that has found decisively counterposed audiences in its ongoing afterlives. A forensics of police violence, on the one hand, 8:46 also avails, in the shadier corners of the dark web, the pleasures of a snuff film. In this way, 8:46 is emblematic of a broader, and, perhaps, terminal …

[Introduction]At the playground, my mother hid from me, I couldn’t find her, and I called her name a thousand times.
And when she reappeared, I ran to her, and she ran to me, and I clenched her neck, and I put my hands on her face, and I said, Where were you? Where were you? and she said, I’m so glad you found me. And we hugged, and she smiled as she cradled me, and I howled, like a gibbon, at her shoulder.

[Introduction] Since the mid-twentieth century, Atlanta has occupied a special place in American culture. From entertainment to industry to politics, Atlanta is one of the few places in America where what happens locally matters nationally. As a results, Atlanta has occupied an outsized space in African American, civil rights, and southern historical literature, leading to its own subgenre that can be called Atlanta studies. The historiography, including notable volumes such as Ronald H. Bayor's Race and the Shaping of Twentieth-Century Atlanta (Chapel Hill, 1996), Kevin M. Krusc's White Flight: Atlanta and the Making of Modern Conservatism (Princeton, 2005), Tomiko Brown-Nagin's …

[Introduction] The hunt has long occupied a central place in southern lore and literature. For generations, fathers and grandfathers initiated their sons into its rituals, teaching them to steady a rifle, bait a hook, and cast a line. In the twentieth century, William Faulkner and other writers elevated this long-held tradition into mythology, evoking both the exhilaration of the chase and the gothic romance of Mississippi’s pine forests. And, today, around 5.3 million southerners (of all races and genders) hold hunting licenses and organize their calendars around the season’s rhythms and associated social gatherings. Focusing on the Deep South states …

The website of the Municipal Council of Colombo asserts that it was founded in 1865 (Colombo Municipal Council, 2015). This is also the story that is recounted in scholarly histories of Colombo, in modern websites and in popular accounts of the history of the city. The objective of this article is to demonstrate that Colombo had a municipal council as early as the sixteenth century and to illuminate the story of its existence for over 70 years - until well into the seventeenth century. It also explores the functions of the council, its relationship with Portuguese officials who ruled the …

The Effect Of Need For Closure, Gender Essentialism, And Contact On Transphobia, Jacob E. Vargas
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Using a motivated social cognition framework, this study explores whether there is an indirect effect of need for closure on transphobia via gender essentialism and whether this relationship is moderated by transgender contact. Data were collected from an undergraduate sample of 405 cisgender participants (nmen = 159, nwomen = 246). A simple mediation and a moderated mediation were used to examine the hypothesized relationships, controlling for participant gender. Results reinforced the positive correlation between gender essentialism and transphobia and the negative correlation between transgender contact and transphobia. However, the mediation and moderation hypotheses were not supported. Need …

In E-Co-Affectivity, Marjolein Oele explores the deep connectivity and relational entanglements of plants, animals, humans, and the soil as elemental components of a co-affective community. Her deconstructive reading of the Aristotelian conception of degrees of three souls, with such hierarchy of humans-animals-vegetables via what she calls categorical contamination,” is a brilliant example of how re-reading the western canon can cast important interpretive light upon contemporary ethico-political questions. Oele’s work shows how it is crucial to foreground (eco)feminist re-interpretations of the writings of major figures in the western philosophical traditions. It is reconstruction and construction of feminist hermeneutics so that it …

This essay analyzes The Untitled Othello Project (UOP) created by Keith Hamilton Cobb. Originating out of conversations around his play American Moor and coinciding with George Floyd’s murder and the period of racial unrest and reflection in the United States, UOP is a transformative approach to Shakespeare studies around issues of pedagogy and performance. Rooted in Cobb’s frustration with systemic racism and exclusion in the capitalist American theater as depicted in American Moor, UOP applies a method called “untitling”, a collaborative and reflective process of dismantling and reimagining Shakespeare’s Othello beyond its origins. This essay examines UOP’s interdisciplinary methods. As …
