In January 2025, researchers at Andrews University (AU) initiated a study to evaluate Seventh-day Adventist churches’ engagement with the 2024 Abuse Prevention or enditnow Sabbath. The purpose of the study was initially to assess visibility and participation through the publicly available digital platforms of the sampled churches. The findings from that investigation were reported to the Departments of Archives and Statistics and Women’s Ministries in June 2025. The study’s scope expanded when researchers received a faculty research grant from Andrews University’s Office of Research to further investigate how Adventist churches across the NAD participate in the enditnow Sabbath. This report …
Emulating Empire: Washington’S Preoccupation With British Counterinsurgency In Malaya And U.S. Commitment To Vietnam, Wen-Qing Ngoei
Emulating Empire: Washington’S Preoccupation With British Counterinsurgency In Malaya And U.S. Commitment To Vietnam, Wen-Qing Ngoei
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
This essay examines how Washington’s deep preoccupation with the British-Malayan counterinsurgency tactics–tactics that routed the guerilla fighters of the Malayan Communist Party–shaped US commitment to Vietnam. This US preoccupation, stoked by Britain’s (and Malaya’s) promotion of their counterinsurgency knowledge to US leaders, also influenced the lessons that US analysts and thinkers absorbed from the United States’ defeat in Indochina. Most studies of British-Malayan counterinsurgency and its connection to the Vietnam War fixate upon debating the relevance of the former to the latter and how this bears on US failures in Indochina. However, this essay focuses on the understudied fervor with …
A Summoned Life: Vocation In The Analects, Teng-Kuan Ng
A Summoned Life: Vocation In The Analects, Teng-Kuan Ng
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
This article explores the concept of vocation in the Analects. While most treatmentsof vocation focus on the Christian tradition, and while Confucian thought is oftenviewed as categorically nontheistic, Robert Merrihew Adams’s Finite and InfiniteGoods (1999) presents an illuminating comparative framework for tracing outKongzi’s religious ethical vision of how persons think, act, and feel when graspedby a sense of divine calling. I argue that in the Analects a vocation is compositelyconceived as: (1) a special divine imperative to an individual or a community (2) tolove particular goods within one’s actual circumstances (3) with nonconsequentialist, noncompetitive, and potentially counter-cultural commitment (4) such that …
Rewilding, Hanna Kaye Sosin
Rewilding, Hanna Kaye Sosin
Graduate Artistry Projects and Performances
Rewilding attempts to bridge the distance between humanity and nature through play and embodied play. To speak to the permeability of humans to their environment, Hanna Sosin references a wide range of inspirations from Biochemistry and population dynamics to poetry and folklore. Each work is an exploration between medium and substrate to make an open ended narrative; they are improvisations based off of the surface of a panel, the expansion and contraction of a tunnel book, or a series of indelible marks made in balsa wood. Characters and symbols such as the match or candle people repeat throughout her work …

Land And Sea: Maritime Capitalism, Terrestrial Frontiers And Their Literary Mediations In Nineteenth-Century Argentina, Claudio Aguayo-Borquez Ph.D.
Land And Sea: Maritime Capitalism, Terrestrial Frontiers And Their Literary Mediations In Nineteenth-Century Argentina, Claudio Aguayo-Borquez Ph.D.
Modern Languages Faculty Publications
This paper grapples with two crucial landscapes of extraction of the Argentine nineteenth century and their mediation through literature: maritime capitalism and primitive accumulation. First, it describes Domingo Faustino Sarmiento's aquatic utopia, focusing on his Americanism, his equation between oceans and plains and the aporias of his Orientalism. Second, this study shows an early displacement towards countryside provincialism in Argentine ideology by analysing José Mármol's novel Amalia. Departing from Etienne Balibar's concept of interior frontiers, this paper shows the emergence of a terrestrial imagination that was crucial for the consolidation of telluric ideologies. This process of ideological displacement coincides with …
Like Lady Godiva: Godiva's Fandom From Fiction To Activism, Elizabeth Reid Boyd
Like Lady Godiva: Godiva's Fandom From Fiction To Activism, Elizabeth Reid Boyd
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The legend of Lady Godiva, who famously rode naked through the streets of Coventry, veiled only by her long, flowing hair, has endured for centuries as a symbol of protest, sacrifice, and spectacle. According to the most popular version of the tale, Godiva pleaded with her husband, Lord Leofric of Mercia, to lift an oppressive tax that threatened to impoverish the people of Coventry. In response, Leofric issued a provocative challenge: he would revoke the tax only if she rode unclothed through the town. Godiva accepted, and in a gesture of defiance and compassion, undertook the ride. The townspeople, out …
Locating Timbre In Copyright Law’S Modern Musical Work, Lauren Wilson
Locating Timbre In Copyright Law’S Modern Musical Work, Lauren Wilson
Journal Articles
Copyright law requires courts deciding music infringement cases to locate two copyrights within a single song: one in the “musical work” and another in the “sound recording.” But songs do not naturally divide into such pieces. Instead, judges untrained in music must parse from a unified song the musical elements belonging to each copyright and to whom those copyrights belong. They have historically approached the task as a simple matter of identifying elements notated on a score as belonging to the musical work and placing “everything else” on the sound recording, but such a formalistic approach does not suit the …
The Consequences Of Technology In Player Piano, I, Robot, And Feed, Chehalis D. Eno
The Consequences Of Technology In Player Piano, I, Robot, And Feed, Chehalis D. Eno
Student Research
With the rise of technologies coined as “artificial intelligence,” the question of human agency in society has never been more pressing. The literary genre of science fiction (SF) holds crucial clues to answering the question. Authors of texts such as Player Piano, I, Robot, and Feed each construct societies shaped by the technology they create and postulate drastic consequences as a result. Using Althusserian Marxism to analyze the ideological and repressive state apparatuses of each author’s society and posthumanism to analyze the resulting interactions with technology, this essay seeks to recognize patterns in human behavior that create technological …

Annotated Bib: Summer Playlist Worksheet, Mary Ruge
Handouts
This worksheet is meant to help students better understand the purpose of an annotated bibliography. The student is tasked with listing three songs they would include on a summer playlist, and provide their reasoning for including each song. The worksheet states that students can’t use a reason for more than one song (for example, if they include a song because the word “summer” is in the title, they can’t use that same reason for including another song). The songs can be from any genre, any time period, and they can interpret “Summer Songs” however they wish. This worksheet was created …

Beyond Methodology: Hungry Translation As A Yearning For Justice, Richa Nagar
Study of Women, Gender, & Sexuality: Faculty Publications
This essay emerges from an invited lecture that I delivered at the University of Amsterdam in 2024. My reflections include glimpses from three decades of journeying within and across diverse sites of knowledge-making: a farmers’ and workers’ movement, a theatre group and my classrooms. I ask: how do we move from the idea of remaking research to a transformational praxis through which we can co-create shared hungers for justice that refuse the borders among research, creativity, unlearning and relearning? I draw on my co-authored labours in Playing with Fire, Muddying the Waters and Hungry Translations to explore this question …

A Broken Glass And Its Pieces: The Psychological Impact On Children In Gaza, Qamar Bazar
Publications and Research
This review article is on the psychological effects of ongoing violence on children living in Gaza through a trauma-informed approach to bring together research from academic articles, clinical studies, and journalistic reports published between 2023 and 2025. Based on the sources selected, their focus is on children’s mental health and whether they came from trusted and credible platforms. Rather than just summarizing the research, the paper uses relevant sources to understand how distress shows up in children with mental health struggles such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), dissociative amnesia, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Questions like how they are related to …

These artworks were created as a direct result of my teaching the ANI216 Animation Studio. In the process of devising ways to incorporate photographic imagery into an animation, I developed a multi-plane system where I could create layers in Adobe Photoshop and combine them with original cartoon characters in After Effects and then animate them.
These artworks for an exhibition at the Garden Gallery (Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney) are imaginary stills inspired by the actual animation. All three were sold.
Stability Cues And User Interpretation In Mobile Bluetooth Recording Workflows, John Trevino
Stability Cues And User Interpretation In Mobile Bluetooth Recording Workflows, John Trevino
Theatre Faculty Publications
Mobile Bluetooth recording has become a practical tool for filmmakers, content creators, educators, and journalists. While technical specifications offer clear limits to wireless audio, perceived performance is often shaped more strongly by user interpretation, interface cues, and workflow stability. This paper analyzes the perceptual systems users rely on when operating Bluetooth microphones through mobile applications, focusing on stability cues, sonic anchors, and behavioral patterns that influence recorded outcomes. The goal is to establish an academic framework for understanding perceived wireless performance without discussing internal engineering mechanics.
A Futurist Exegesis Of Matthew 24:1-42, Kenneth Garcia
A Futurist Exegesis Of Matthew 24:1-42, Kenneth Garcia
Masters Theses
This thesis explores a Futurist exegesis of Matthew 24:1-42, emphasizing its prophetic fulfillment in future events rather than historical or allegorical interpretations. It critiques Preterist and Historicist views, arguing that key elements—including the abomination of desolation, the great tribulation, and the second coming of Christ—remain unfulfilled. By analyzing the text in its historical, grammatical, and theological context, and correlating it with Daniel’s visions and Revelation, this study defends the position that Jesus’ discourse predicts end-times events such as the rise of the Antichrist, the rebuilding of the third temple, and global tribulation. This work affirms the hope of Christ’s imminent …
The Shared Roots And Divergent Paths Of African American Spirituals And Afro-Caribbean Music, Jana Jones
The Shared Roots And Divergent Paths Of African American Spirituals And Afro-Caribbean Music, Jana Jones
Masters Theses
The resilient perseverance of African culture manifested itself in the music of the diasporic communities of the transatlantic slave trade. This slave trade led slaves to two main areas: North America and the Caribbean. While there were common roots and shared experience of slavery that influenced similar growing musical traditions of African American and Afro-Caribbean music such as rhythmic and melodic elements, over time, their music evolved along distinct paths due to differing social, political and religious contexts. Through a comparative study of lyrical themes, melodic patterns, rhythmic characteristics and cultural functions, this research traces the influence of the African …

This thesis explores the intricate interplay between imagination and reality in fantasy literature, encapsulated within the first ninety pages of my novel, A Ruin of Memories. It is an explorative contribution to the genre, with themes of mental health, loss, and belonging in an environment that morphs reality with the supernatural.
The artist statement serves as a reflective insight into my creative process and personal journey as a writer. It outlines my motivations for crafting A Ruin of Memories, rooted in my desire to paint a picture of spiritual warfare through the lens of vampyres, werewolves, and witches. Through this …

A Phenomenological Study On The Effects Of Graded Performance Evaluations On The Longterm Musical Engagement Of Students In Malaysia, Qianxi Lim
Masters Theses
This qualitative transcendental phenomenological study aimed to research the effects of graded examinations, such as the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) and Trinity, on the musical engagement of students who have taken private music lessons. Graded examinations are widely used in Malaysian private music studios, and most music teachers and students use the examinations as the primary source for music education. Participants shared their demographics, experience with graded examinations and private music lessons, and current musical engagement through an online questionnaire on Google Forms. Eight Malaysians who have taken private music lessons and graded examinations were …

Science And The Humanities: Are They Two Polar Entities?, Elizabeth Mckenna Silvey
Science And The Humanities: Are They Two Polar Entities?, Elizabeth Mckenna Silvey
Masters Theses
Science and the humanities are often perceived as being separate entities. In academic settings, there is little to no overlap in these courses of study. One can obtain a Bachelor of Science or a Bachelor of Arts degree, but there are no academic majors that allow for the study of both the humanities and the sciences. Despite the seemingly different courses of study, it is through careful examination of literature and thoroughly delving into pieces of literature in order to excavate the meaning and purpose behind the work, that one is able to see the distinct connections between the two …
Waffles And Spaghetti: The Effects Of Cognitive Processing Methods On Team Performance And Communication, Jonah Daniel Browning
Waffles And Spaghetti: The Effects Of Cognitive Processing Methods On Team Performance And Communication, Jonah Daniel Browning
Masters Theses
The goal of this thesis is to shed light on a practical method for resolving conflicts in team environments that stem from miscommunications brought on by differing cognitive processes. Our brains use different cognitive processing techniques to make sense of and explore the vast amount of information the world presents them on a daily, even hourly basis. Each person has their own thinking style which influences how teams collaborate and problem solve. However, miscommunication can often arise when individuals fail to recognize and adapt to the varying processing methods, which can lead to frustration and inefficiency.
This research seeks to …
The Development Of Cosmological Theories And Their Correlation With Biblical Scripture In Ancient Times, Margaret A. Burcie
The Development Of Cosmological Theories And Their Correlation With Biblical Scripture In Ancient Times, Margaret A. Burcie
Masters Theses
Agnostics and astronomical researchers like Harlow Shapley's contributions to cosmology, specifically his recalibration of the Milky Way and the discovery of its true structure and size, marked an important moment in individuals’ understanding of the universe.”1 These theorists have redefined humanity's place in the cosmos by accentuating empirical observations over religious theories, laying the groundwork for modern cosmology while simultaneously reigniting the age-old debate about the universe's origin. “Theories may crumble, but good observations never fade,”2 accentuate the lifelong importance of scientific research.
This paper focuses on the relationship between the development of cosmological theories and biblical interpretations; these will …
Little Disciples: Providing At Home Christian Educational Resources To Parents For Their Children’S Spiritual Growth, Samantha Hatfield
Little Disciples: Providing At Home Christian Educational Resources To Parents For Their Children’S Spiritual Growth, Samantha Hatfield
Masters Theses
It has always been difficult to keep young people attending church after they reach the freedom of adulthood, but their absence continued to grow with each generation. It is hard to prove whether their decline in attendance is due to lack of spiritual formation in younger years or just the changing of the times is hard to prove, but it can be inferred that more training and honest conversations in earlier years would positively affect this statistic as well as the spiritual wellbeing of future generations. Since the most formative years of children based on brain development are between ages …
Into The Shadows In Context: A Personal Writing Philosophy, The Fantasy Tradition, And A Novella, Genevieve Mumford
Into The Shadows In Context: A Personal Writing Philosophy, The Fantasy Tradition, And A Novella, Genevieve Mumford
Masters Theses
It is important for the aspiring fantasy novelist to consider why he or she writes. Some personal motivations for writing include the desire to glorify God by mirroring His creativity, utilizing one’s talents, reflecting the Gospel of Christ, creating quality art, and providing clean entertainment. Christian authors should be free to pursue whatever type of writing they wish, knowing that when they focus on the story first, the message will flow into it naturally. In addition, fantasy novelists should study key works in this genre. Fantasy stories generally include otherworldly settings, magic, and the victory of good over evil. J. …
