The UK National Memorial Arboretum (NMA) is at Alrewas, Staffordshire. The 5BFTS Association gave donations to the NMA which provided a Grove of five trees (five for number 5) comprising two English Birch trees and three American Birch trees and a Plaque. The Grove was dedicated in October 2002. Document 04 ‘5BFTS Association Newsletter November 2001’ informs members about the proposed 5BFTS Grove at the NMA and suggests that the Dedication of the Grove could be during the 2002 Annual Reunion.

Memorandum for Record written by Dennis Luke, 5BFTS Course 5, and related to those who joined the Manchester University Air Squadron (MUAS) on April 15,1941 for a six-month short course for the RAF. The course finished on October 15, 1941. Dennis and 14 other members of this MUAS course then went to 5BFTS joining Course 5 as an RAF cadet for pilot training from December 7, 1941, to June 19, 1942. This is the original Memorandum.

This autoethnographic study explores the disorienting dilemma that a technical services librarian experienced while alternating between working behind the scenes to fulfill professional responsibilities and teaching in the library to meet organizational expectations as a faculty member. The analysis of personal data accumulated during the tenure track period reveals three themes: teaching as learning to become, teaching as learning to challenge the system, and teaching as learning to research. Reflection focuses on three themes interconnected by the concept and practice of mindful learning. With the acknowledgement of limitations, this autoethnography concludes it was the self-reflective lifelong learning mindset that helped …

This study examines the news media’s coverage of intraregional immigration issues in three Latin American countries –Colombia, Chile, and Mexico– from 2014 to 2018, when immigration became a salient political issue in these nations. We examine the news coverage by utilizing a novel sample of approximately 20,000 news articles and relying on a Structure Topic Modelling (STM) analysis to detect the most prevalent topics in the news. Our findings reveal that policy issues and stories related to human rights constitute the primary focus of news media coverage on immigration in those countries. Viruses are microscopic infectious agents that can infect all living organisms and are found in every ecosystem on Earth. Despite this abundance, viral communities in deep-sea environments remain understudied. Hydrothermal vent systems are a unique environment of study due to high pressure, extreme temperatures, and lack of sunlight that make environments uninhabitable except for specialized organisms. The goal of this study is to characterize viral families at Axial Seamount and improve our understanding of viral diversity in deep-sea hydrothermal ecosystems. Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder characterized by impaired epidermal barrier function and immune dysregulation. Emerging evidence suggests that the gut microbiome plays a key role in immune signaling pathways involved in AD development and severity, particularly during early life. This project examined how the gut microbiome influences skin inflammation to determine key immunological mechanisms mediating AD symptomology and possible therapeutic strategies. Reduced microbial diversity and decreased abundance of short-chain fatty acid (SCFA)‚ producing anaerobes are consistently associated with increased AD risk. Dysbiosis disrupts immune tolerance by impairing regulatory T cell (Treg) function and promoting Th2 and …

Current research shows that experiencing childhood bullying can be associated with negative emotional, physical and behavioral outcomes (Armitage, 2021). The purpose of this study was to examine whether the experiences of childhood bullying victimization (CBV) increased the likelihood of substance use such as alcohol, cigarettes, and marijuana in early adulthood. A total of 1022 participants aged 18-25, were recruited from social media, paper media, and emails, engaged in a study conducted in Spring of 2022. 1340–1345: Ibn Qayyim Al-Ǧawziyya On The Question Of Permanent Truce, Suleiman A. Mourad

This article analyses Ibn Qayyim al-Ǧawziyya’s discussion of permanent truce (al-hudna al-muṭlaqa) in his “Legal Judgements about the People of Protected Status” (Aḥkām ahl al-ḏimma). Focusing on Ibn al-Qayyim’s method and arguments, the article examines the content of a relevant section from the work, situating it within the broader discussion of “truce” in the Sunnī legal tradition. Ibn al-Qayyim manages to ground permanent truce in the Prophetic tradition. Both his argument and its justification do not conform to anything we find in Sunnī law, including Ibn al-Qayyim’s own Ḥanbalī school. The article thus underscores the creativity …

To support research and interventions using a positive, strength-based framework of lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) identities in China, this study translates the Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Positive Identity Measure (LGB-PIM) into Standard Chinese and evaluating its reliability and validity among Chinese sexual minorities. Following Brislin’s standardized translation procedures (translation, back-translation, cultural adaptation, and pretesting), the scale retained 25 items across 5 dimensions. A convenience sample of 392 participants underwent assessments of internal consistency (α = 0.92), retest reliability (α = 0.80), structural validity (68.54% variance explained), and construct validity. The interrelation between music and the brain is an evolving interdisciplinary interest within neuroscience research. Relying on the capacity of music to elicit emotional and physical responses, as well as scientific principles like entrainment, this area of research explores the potential for utilizing targeted music as a holistic non-pharmacological therapeutic intervention. This is often executed via musical entrainment, which is the basis for this study. This thesis examines the incarceration of Latina women in the United States through an intersectional lens that centers ethnicity, gender, and class, among other factors. While mass incarceration has been widely studied, Latina experiences are often overlooked or reduced to statistics, making their specific pathways into and through the criminal legal system largely invisible. This project argues that Latina incarceration is not simply the result of individual behavior, but is shaped by overlapping systems of structural inequality.
