[Review Of The Book Reading Underwater Wreckage: An Encrusting Ocean, By K. Quigley], Ingo Heidbrink Jan 2024

[Review Of The Book Reading Underwater Wreckage: An Encrusting Ocean, By K. Quigley], Ingo Heidbrink

History Faculty Publications

[Introduction] Anyone with expectations that a book titled Reading Underwater Wreckage is a methodological handbook for maritime archaeologists or anyone with interest in analyzing artifacts sunken into the deep of the oceans as material for historical research will be deeply disappointed by Killian Quigley's new book. But for readers who are interested in new approaches to look at submerged artifacts or wrecks, who are willing to give up the disciplinary confines of academia, who are interested in nonhuman actors' involvement in artistic processes, or in other words, who are willing to look below the surface through a different lens, Quigley's …

Prince Basketball's Ambassadors: Virginia Union's "Dream Team" And The Origins Of Integrated College Basketball, 1938-42, Marvin T. Chiles

History Faculty Publications

This article explores the history of integrated college basketball in the United States, with a focus on the Virginia Union Panthers. The Panthers, known as the "Dream Team," broke the color barrier in college basketball in the 1930s and 1940s. The article also discusses the 1992 U.S. Men's Olympic Basketball Team, known as the "Dream Team," and its impact on race relations. It argues that the original Dream Team was actually the Virginia Union Panthers, who symbolized the defeat of white supremacy through athletic achievement. The article highlights the challenges faced by historically black college sports, such as lack of …

The Challenges Of Writing The History Of Localities That Were Under Colonial Rule In The Early Phase Of European Expansion: An Investigation Into Writing The History Of Negombo (Sri Lanka) In The Sixteenth And Early Seventeenth Centuries, Chandra R. De Silva Jan 2024

De Silva

History Faculty Publications

Local history has been conventionally defined as a chronicle of a limited geographical area. The study of local history can have positive outcomes including reconstructing our ancestor’s everyday lives and providing opportunities for students to develop investigative research skills, develop linkages with locals and to also motivate students to improve their basic skills of reading, writing and critical thinking. Unlike in the West, however, where local historians use old records of their locality, local historians of lands colonized by Westerners have problems finding source material. For example, in Sri Lanka, the Portuguese occupying the southwest lowlands destroyed Buddhist and Hindu …

[Review Of The Book Sailing To Freedom: Maritime Dimensions Of The Underground Railroad, By T. D. Walker (Ed.)], Ingo Heidbrink Jan 2024

[Review Of The Book Sailing To Freedom: Maritime Dimensions Of The Underground Railroad, By T. D. Walker (Ed.)], Ingo Heidbrink

History Faculty Publications

"Sailing to Freedom: Maritime Dimensions of the Underground Railroad" edited by Timothy D. Walker explores the often overlooked maritime aspects of the Underground Railroad. The book consists of ten chapters written by historians specializing in African American history and the land-based Underground Railroad. While the book offers valuable insights into African American history and escaping slavery, it is less focused on maritime history. The chapters discuss various ports along the Eastern Seaboard, detailing the preparation, boarding, and arrival of enslaved individuals seeking freedom. The book provides a nuanced analysis of individual escape stories, although some chapters may be repetitive. It …

Indigenous Sovereignties In The Americas [Review Of The Book Indigenous Borderlands: Native Agency, Resilience, And Power In The Americas, By J. Rivaya-Martinez]., Miller S. Wright

History Faculty Publications

[First paragraph] Correcting the continued erasure and marginalization of Native American and Indigenous peoples as historical actors unites the essays of Indigenous Borderlands: Native Agency, Resilience, and Power in the Americas, edited by Joaquín Rivaya-Martínez. Incorporating multidisciplinary approaches, the edited collection consists of thirteen essays, written by twelve scholars, analyzing “Indigenous agency, adaptiveness, resilience, sovereignty, and power,” across the Americas from precontact with Europeans and Africans to the twentieth century (pp. 1-2). The collection examines how Indigenous peoples adapted to European colonization to protect and maintain their sovereignty, cultures, and territories and, in so doing, shaped the creation of …

More Than Censorship: The Harm Of Libricide, James M. Donovan Jan 2024

More Than Censorship: The Harm Of Libricide, James M. Donovan

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

Libricide, although often deemed an extreme instance of censorship, is altogether different. Censorship involves the suppression of particular books due to alleged inappropriate content; libricide refers to the intentional destruction of entire libraries. Understanding the differing motives recognizes that the library is more than the books it contains, and is instead an institution rooted in its history of selection and use by the local community. Over time, the library reflects the users’ identity, a reminder that any aggressor would wish to eliminate when the goal is pacification by erasure of a population’s memory and history. Prerequisites for an act of …

Romans At Besa: New Light On An Athenian Deme In The Imperial Period, Anna Kouremenos, Giorgos Mitropoulos Jan 2024

Romans At Besa: New Light On An Athenian Deme In The Imperial Period, Anna Kouremenos, Giorgos Mitropoulos

History Faculty Publications

This article presents an overview of Roman citizens registered in the small Attic deme of Besa. The epigraphic record indicates that three Roman emperors—Hadrian, Commodus and Severus Alexander—were enrolled as citizens in this deme, as was the influential eastern magnate G. Julius Antiochus Epiphanes Philopappos and several men who dominated Athenian politics during the High Imperial period. We argue that Hadrian's enrolment and repeated sojourns in Athens encouraged various individuals—including two of his successors—to join this deme, but why did the emperor himself choose Besa and not a larger, more important deme in the city's civic centre? Consequently, where did …

Imaginary Margins: Disability Poetics & Reinventing The Page, Audrey T. Heffers Jan 2024

Imaginary Margins: Disability Poetics & Reinventing The Page, Audrey T. Heffers

Graduate Publications – English

Disability poetics resist marginalisation by centralising disabled words and experiences, both literally and figuratively. In a world that prioritises ability, disabled bodyminds are marked as deviant from norms and conventions. Disabled poets have the opportunity to resist the normalised ‘body’ of the poem on the page. Conventions, rules, and norms can shape poetry – not just rhyme and metre, but line breaks, line arrangements, and limiting poems to the written linguistic mode. Disability poetics can include techniques such as poems written sideways, prose poems, and multimodally-composed texts, as explored in Tonguebreaker by Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha, Wound from the Mouth of …

More Alike Than Not: The Open Access Preferences Of Humanities Scholars, Rachel Scott, Ana Dubnjakovic Jan 2024

More Alike Than Not: The Open Access Preferences Of Humanities Scholars, Rachel Scott, Ana Dubnjakovic

Faculty and Staff Publications

Several studies have noted that humanists have not been as quick or enthusiastic in their adoption of Open Access (OA) as their colleagues in other disciplines. This article leverages the Ithaka S+R US 2021 Faculty Survey to provide contextualized analysis of the OA and Open Education Resources (OER) preferences of humanities scholars, as well as some practices related to OA and OER, relative to their colleagues in other disciplines. Findings suggest that although humanists do stand apart in many OA preferences, the small effect sizes render these differences less important than previously suspected. The implications of these findings are considered …

Krautrock, Kraftwerk, And Techno: The Transnational And Interracial Circulations Of Electronic Music Genres Between Europe And America, Eleanor Robb Jan 2024

Krautrock, Kraftwerk, And Techno: The Transnational And Interracial Circulations Of Electronic Music Genres Between Europe And America, Eleanor Robb

Undergraduate Research Awards

Since the 1960’s, there has been a circular exchange of musical elements and genre-creation between Black[1]musicians in America and the German band Kraftwerk. The effects of deindustrialization, population decline, and white flight in Detroit, coupled with the presence of the city’s Black inhabitants during the 1960’s and 70’s, created the conditions for a breakthrough of genre in American music. In turn, Kraftwerk’s auditory presence in America, and particularly in Detroit, became a particular influence on the developing electronic music genre of Detroit Techno. Samples and interpolations from this influence still permeate American popular music today. The genre of …

Framing Femininity: Opportunities For Gender Non-Conformity At U.S. Women's Colleges At The Turn Of The Twentieth Century, Natté Fortier

Undergraduate Research Awards

Cross-dressing and same-sex attractions were common occurrences at historically women’s colleges (HWCs) in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when the majority of these institutions came into their own. When examining typical characteristics of HWC campus cultures in their formative years, one might be surprised to see misalignment between common and accepted behaviors by college women versus outside social expectations for women of their class and time period. Thus we might ask: what unique opportunities existed in the early era of HWCs that permitted students to transcend elite patriarchal expectations for gender and femininity? This paper aims to explore …

Artlessness: A Disturbing Ideal In Fanny Burney's Evelina, Autumn Wille Jan 2024

Artlessness: A Disturbing Ideal In Fanny Burney's Evelina, Autumn Wille

Before the Enlightenment, the psychological symptoms which are now associated with autism were rationalized through a lens of religion and folklore. Post-Enlightenment, the term “autism” and its classification as a neurodivergence were first recorded midway through the 20th century (Zeldovich). Between these two explanations is a two-hundred-year gap in which faith-based rationalizations were shunned in the name of science, yet science had not developed a label for autism—nor was that label perhaps yet necessary, given the relative simplicity of the world compared to today. What, then, was the social appraisal of autistic-coded symptoms during those two hundred years, and …

"Nothing In America Would Outrival Such A Spectacle": The Contested Histories Of Mount Rushmore, Western Tourism, And American Nationalism, Sophia Ciatti Jan 2024

"Nothing In America Would Outrival Such A Spectacle": The Contested Histories Of Mount Rushmore, Western Tourism, And American Nationalism, Sophia Ciatti

Undergraduate Research Awards

Mount Rushmore, as one of the primary tourist destinations of both South Dakota and the American West in general, is an important source for an examination of American interstate tourism. However, while many scholars have discussed the physical history of Mount Rushmore, such as Gilbert Fite’s Mount Rushmore and Rex Allen Smith’s The Carving of Mount Rushmore, fewer historians have discussed the intellectual history behind the monument. The intentions imbued in the monument from its creators, and the impact the creation of Mount Rushmore had upon the American public are both worth analyzing because those two aspects ended up …

Integrating Creative Writing And Dance - A Reflective Collection, Grace Becker

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

This project highlights my dual artistic experiences in dance and creative writing throughout my time at WKU through a portfolio website, where all my work will be available in one place. In this project, I showcase the progression of my writing throughout my undergraduate career. This portfolio includes reflections on each piece. As a writer and dancer, I have learned that skills in both art forms enhance productivity in each area. This project allowed me to reflect on my progress as a writer, dancer, and choreographer, and look forward to how I will continue this integration in my professional career.

Exploring Storytelling In Dance: A Comprehensive Analysis Of Choreography, Sophia Jones Jan 2024

Exploring Storytelling In Dance: A Comprehensive Analysis Of Choreography, Sophia Jones

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Storytelling in dance poses a subjective challenge. The lack of concrete guidelines for choreography can create a discrepancy between what is considered successful dance across different genres. This research aims to address this issue by examining the role of space and energy in storytelling and their intersections through genres such as tap, modern, and dance film. Through an analysis of my choreographic works including 777, Memento Mori, Vivid Connections, and Portrait, this study investigates how common choreographic elements contribute to narrative effectiveness.

This study explores the utilization of compositional tools and their application across various genres to convey each piece’s …

Biophilic Design And Its Effects On Mental And Physical Health, Alexandria Lahman

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The design of interior spaces can greatly impact one’s mental health. Because people are spending more time indoors, the importance of well- designed interior spaces has increased dramatically. Using biophilic design in architecture can increase productivity and creativity and positively impact mental health. Biophilic design involves incorporating organic materials, patterns, colors, textures, and plants into the built environment. This project aims to highlight the importance of biophilic design in architecture and how it can be incorporated into interior architecture.

Sinfonia Concertante In E, Braden Cutright-Head

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The "Sinfonia Concertante in E" was written about my journey overcoming a visual impairment as a college student in a global pandemic. It represents the struggle in the first section, while the second section is a lament for things I don't have (not being able to drive or see facial cues), while also representing my unusual but awesome African connections I made during the height of Covid. The third and last section is a big party for having overcome the visual impairment. The accompanying paper describes the processes, as well as my life story and how I got to this …

The Power Of Females And Femininity In The Silmarillion, Madeline Shelly

Joyce Durham Essay Contest in Women's and Gender Studies

J.R.R. Tolkien is unarguably the most influential fantasy author of modern literature. The modern fantasy genre, from Harry Potter to Game of Thrones, would not exist without him. The motifs in Tolkien’s works, from elves to dwarves to the epic quest to save the world, have been retold and ingrained into the subconscious of the western world, so that a work of fantasy would not be fantasy without displaying at least some elements originating from Tolkien. His major works, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, have become staples of Western literature and film. However, some criticism has been …

Testing The Psychometric Properties Of The Turkish Vesion Of The Lgbt Community Connectedness Scale, Yusuf Barburoğlu, S. Burcu Özgülük Üçok, Eda Çürükvelioğlu Köksal, Yuvamathi Gandhi, Pamela J. Lannutti

Counseling & Human Services Faculty Publications

The feeling of belonging to a community that adopts a protective stance for the well-being of its members is an essential human need. It is well known that LGBTQ+ people experience more stress than other social groups because of discrimination, stigmatization, and self-stigmatization. Therefore, their connectedness to the LGBTQ+ community functions crucially in receiving social support. However, no study in Türkiye has yet comprehensively investigated the community connectedness of people identifying as LGBTQ+. Thus, the current study adapted Frost and Meyer’s (2012) LGBT Community Connectedness Scale to Turkish. This scale was designed to measure the connectedness of LGBT individuals to …

Counseling & Human Services Faculty Publications

Previous research with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and various sexually and gender diverse (LGBTQ+) people has largely highlighted how experiences of discrimination and marginalization, and mental health outcomes are related. However, it is important that researchers operate from a strength-based approach to identify how aspects of one's identity may foster resilience. It is crucial that people working with LGBTQ+ individuals have empirically supported and culturally verified measures to assess such constructs. In this regard, the Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Positive Identity Measure (LGB-PIM) developed by Riggle et al. (2014) was aimed to be translated into Turkish, examining its psychometric …

Through a roundtable conversation via Zoom, teachers, pastors, and graduate students discussed the place of gender, citizenship, and faith in their identity formation and social accountability to articulate a hermeneutical lens specific to Southeast Asian contexts that shape and critique queer identities. These participants—primarily ministers, theological students, and seminary formators—engaged in organic, fluid, and multifocal turns to capture experiences that undergird the realities of women and LGBTQIQ+ people of faith in the region.

Regarding The Centrality Of The Covenant Motif In Heinrich Bullinger’S Theological Thought, Isaias D'Oleo Ochoa

CTS Student Publications and Creative Works

This article offers some statistics from Heinrich Bullinger’s The Decades with a brief analysis as evidence that Bullinger must be understood as the forerunner, not the father, of federal theology, since his discussion of the covenant doctrine is limited, inconsistent, exploratory, and slightly integrated with the rest of his theological thought.

The "State Of Art": Evolutionary Ethics In Thomas Hardy's Tess Of The D' Urbervilles, Brooks Lampe Jan 2024

The "State Of Art": Evolutionary Ethics In Thomas Hardy's Tess Of The D' Urbervilles, Brooks Lampe

Faculty Publications - Department of English

What was literary naturalism? One might be tempted to say it was an experiment in fiction (at least in Europe), eventually absorbed into its more successful sibling, Realism. Or one might argue it was a seminal movement which has been misunderstood and read reductively as depicting humans as passive pawns in an indifferent world. Beyond this obstacle of perceived one-dimensionality, there is the less obvious but equally challenging charge that naturalism was, at bottom, a propagandistic genre, appropriating, as Keith Newlin suggests, melodrama for the purpose of persuading readers to "redress social imbalance" ( 4). Finally, there is the muddiness …
