The Excitement Of Life, Jacob D. Soukup Jun 2016

The Excitement Of Life, Jacob D. Soukup

Celebration of Learning

These recent paintings explore the presence of excitement, energy and adrenaline rush one can capture in a moment. Oil paints have a quality that can make a painting come to life. This lifelike quality is exactly what I strive to capture in a way that allows the viewers to put themselves inside the painting. The inspiration for these paintings came from my own experiences of adventure and risk-taking. The use of foreshortening and distortion helps give the figures a sense of energy and create movement throughout the composition. By portraying the various situations through a warped lens, I believe that …

The Return Of The Prophetic Ministry Of The Western Church Within The Context Of Liberation Theology And The Prophets, Cedric D. Starr May 2016

The Return Of The Prophetic Ministry Of The Western Church Within The Context Of Liberation Theology And The Prophets, Cedric D. Starr

Life of the Scholar Multidisciplinary Conference

While there may still be churches in the West that take up the prophetic call against injustice their voices are the minority. Generally speaking, the prophetic church in Western Christendom is dead. Its prophetic voice has become mute. Its prophetic vision has diminished. Its prophetic call has vanished from the ears of its members. The Western Church has lost its prophetic role in the Global World. The prophets of the West have vanished. However, the prophetic call has been taken up by a new church tradition that rises upward from the ruin of oppression. The Southern Church of the developing …

A Tale Of Two Schools: Medical Education And California's Political Economy, Michael Weismeyer May 2016

A Tale Of Two Schools: Medical Education And California's Political Economy, Michael Weismeyer

Andrews Research Conference

This paper examines the beginnings of medical education in California and argues that the establishment of a medical school in California contributed to the growth of the state’s political economy and allowed for further development of the state. After statehood in 1850, California developed necessary infrastructure, including providing healthcare to the California populace. While there were doctors in California in the 1850s, no institution existed for educating new doctors within the state. This changed in 1859 with the founding of California’s first medical school, which was formed as the medical department of the University of the Pacific, one of California’s …

The Influence Of The Ottoman Threat On The Protestant Reformation (Reformers), Daniel Nițulescu May 2016

The Influence Of The Ottoman Threat On The Protestant Reformation (Reformers), Daniel Nițulescu

Andrews Research Conference

This paper will highlight the causality between the Ottoman’s menace and the Protestant Reformation in the XVI-th century, regarding the support, the consolidation and the direct determination of the Protestant movement. The question - ,,whom did the Turks support more: the Protestants or the Catholics?" was for a long time a realm of debate for theologians and even for historians.

More than that, the paper proposes to reveal the influence of Ottoman peril on reformer perceptions (visions about Turks). In this regard, one of its goal is to explain the permanent oscillation in Luther’s vision concerning Turk’s incursion and invasion. …

A Door Into Ocean’S Nonviolent Resistance As Pragmatic Social Vision, Melodie A. Roschman May 2016

A Door Into Ocean’S Nonviolent Resistance As Pragmatic Social Vision, Melodie A. Roschman

Andrews Research Conference

In this essay, I examine how Joan Slonczewski’s 1986 feminist science fiction novel A Door into Ocean outlines a practical program of nonviolent resistance to oppression. Unlike many dystopian and utopian novels, which provide social commentary and offer up ideals but not practical solutions, A Door into Ocean depicts the citizens of a peaceful alien nation, Shora, using various practical tactics of resistance against invading Valan forces that can be applied to contemporary protest and political action. I begin my study by examining the threefold influences on the Shoran’s philosophy of resistance: postcolonial resistance, ecofeminism, and Quaker theology. I then …

If Somebody Knows About That Nose, It’S Not The Forgetful Maid: False Memory And The Environment Of Recall In Tristram Shandy, Kylene Cave May 2016

If Somebody Knows About That Nose, It’S Not The Forgetful Maid: False Memory And The Environment Of Recall In Tristram Shandy, Kylene Cave

Andrews Research Conference

In his seven-volume novel, In Search of Lost Time (1913-1927), Marcel Proust explores the depths and limitations of involuntary memory and argues that remembrance of the past is inherently altered and unreliable. Referred to by many scholars as Proustian Memory, this theory explicates both the revision that takes place in the act of remembering as well as the inherent fictionality of these recollections. Written, however, nearly two-hundred years earlier, Laurence Sterne’s Tristram Shandy (1759-64) hints at some of the same claims regarding the reconstruction of the past through the act of remembering. Deeply concerned with how and to what extent …

The Road To Racial Progress In The Seventh-Day Adventist Church: A Survey Of Counsel And Policy From 1890-1920, Jon Ruhumuliza May 2016

The Road To Racial Progress In The Seventh-Day Adventist Church: A Survey Of Counsel And Policy From 1890-1920, Jon Ruhumuliza

Andrews Research Conference

The SDA church entered the South during a tumultuous period in American history. As a product of its time, the church adopted policies that limited the effectiveness of black outreach while seemingly unaware that it had accepted cultural norms towards African Americans. While the ambitions of the church expressed the inclusiveness of its Christian message, in practice it hindered itself due to prejudice by the membership along with inconsistent policies. Because of this the road to full integration of African Americans and the execution of Black Missions moved slowly. Regardless, African Americans progressed due to strong commitment to the message.

Ifele: A Method To Teach Spanish As A Second Language Within Communities Of Practice, Francisco Burgos May 2016

Ifele: A Method To Teach Spanish As A Second Language Within Communities Of Practice, Francisco Burgos

Andrews Research Conference

This study, which involved classroom-based experimental research conducted during the Fall semester of 2013 in a Spanish class at Oakwood University, aimed at extending the findings of previous studies on the use of familiar texts in reading and writing (Brown 2007, Vygotsky 1978, Kern 2000, Rollins & Villamil 2001, McCourt 2006, Morris, Beck & Smith 2004, Smith & Carvill 2000, Baring 2008, Bonard 2000, White 2009, Freire 1970. To do so, this study examined empirically the impact of familiar texts on students’ reading and writing outcomes using treatment and control conditions for comparison. This study was also interested in demonstrating …

Influence Of Students’ Industrial Training On The Academic Performance Of Mass Communication Students In Babcock University Ogun State, Nigeria, Ifeoma Helen Ayeni May 2016

Influence Of Students’ Industrial Training On The Academic Performance Of Mass Communication Students In Babcock University Ogun State, Nigeria, Ifeoma Helen Ayeni

Andrews Research Conference

There is a school of thought that suggests that tertiary institutions cannot and should not be the only source of training for future journalists; proponents argued that there is a need for the gown to reach out to town in terms of curriculum development and delivery so that both the philosophy and theory taught in the classroom might conform to the expectations and needs of the society. The study therefore examined the influence of industrial training on mass communication students of Babcock University. The study adopts the survey research method with questionnaire as the research instrument which was administered on …

Repositioning Adventist Publishing Work In Southwest Nigerian City For Youth Appeal, Samuel Okere Ph.D, Chibuzor Onyema May 2016

Repositioning Adventist Publishing Work In Southwest Nigerian City For Youth Appeal, Samuel Okere Ph.D, Chibuzor Onyema

Andrews Research Conference

Adventist publishing ministry work presents the least appeal to the youth of the church in Ibadan city, a foremost Seventh-day Adventist mission field in Nigeria. To find out why this negative perception and the way forward, the researchers carried out a survey on 125 youths drawn from a population of 700 youths within Ibadan city. These were administered with a structured interview (questionnaire) addressing three research questions namely, 1. How do the youths perceive the potentials of Adventist publishing ministry work as a job creation organ for youth financial empowerment while doing its evangelistic work of mission advancement? 2. To …

The Sensorimotor Approach To Color Perception And The Necessity Of Socio-Cultural Considerations For Color Naming, Matthew Watts May 2016

The Sensorimotor Approach To Color Perception And The Necessity Of Socio-Cultural Considerations For Color Naming, Matthew Watts

Student Research Symposium

In this paper I argue against Kevin O’Regan’s claim that the “biological reflectance function” and its notion of “simple” colors naturally lead to a biologically consistent standard for species wide color naming. Although the simplicity of these colors may allow for easier apprehension, the notion that color simplicity will naturally lead to a consistent standard for the naming of basic color hues across a species is inconsistent with the idea of objective colors in the way that he portrays it. While it fixes many of the traditional explanatory issues surrounding color perception, it opens up new explanatory issues surrounding color. …

Geography Of Gender And The Gender Of Geography In The Roman Imagination, Austin Howard May 2016

Geography Of Gender And The Gender Of Geography In The Roman Imagination, Austin Howard

Student Research Symposium

This paper argues for a profound link between gendered stereotypes and geography in the Graeco-Roman imagination focusing on the early Roman Empire. Hitherto, this link has been mentioned, sometimes assumed, and almost never treated as a venture worthy or deeper study or unifying themes, apart from questions of “proto-racism.” Notwithstanding, the links can be drawn comparing how the peoples living in different parts of the empire are described and how stereotypes of gender also appear in historical and literary texts. By careful examination (including cross-examination) of Strabo, Tacitus, Livy, Julius Caesar, and others, I seek the argue for a strong …

After Houselessness: Queer Youth Of Color Severed From Cultural And Spiritual Community, Carrie Fuentes, Miriam Abelson May 2016

After Houselessness: Queer Youth Of Color Severed From Cultural And Spiritual Community, Carrie Fuentes, Miriam Abelson

Student Research Symposium

Within the Portland Oregon Houseless Youth Continuum, to what extent are the particular needs of Queer Youth of Color being served by existing programs? There is a gap between the nature of houseless youth services and the need for Queer Youth of Color to rebuild the missing connections resulting from cultural or spiritual rupture that creates a disconnection from their ancestry and community estrangement. Programs exist that offer assistance to QYOC in crisis but these programs lack in a positive connection to spiritual and cultural legacy that will support long term self-efficacy.

The proposed research goal is to examine these …

How Lust Was Lost: Genre, Identity And The Neglect Of A Pioneering Comics Publication, Robert Hulshof-Schmidt May 2016

How Lust Was Lost: Genre, Identity And The Neglect Of A Pioneering Comics Publication, Robert Hulshof-Schmidt

Student Research Symposium

In 1950, St. John Publications published what is arguably the first graphic novel. It Rhymes With Lust was illustrated by Matt Baker, one of the first and most prolific African Americans in the comics industry. It was written by Arnold Drake – a long-time comics creator – and Leslie Waller – a respected novelist. Despite the talent arrayed and the historical significance of its timing, the novel has been largely ignored by comics scholars, historians, fans, and collectors. This paper carefully lays out the historical context for the publication of this “picture novel,” reviewing the state of the comics industry, …

Obligations Of Grace, Mark E. Roberts May 2016

Obligations Of Grace, Mark E. Roberts

Empowered21 Global Network of Spirit-Empowered Scholars

Grace obliges recipients to respond in gratitude and obedience to God, the giver of grace. While the New Testament emphasizes God's grace given through Jesus Christ in a New Covenant with believers, the Old Testament emphasizes grace more than many Christians recognize. Grace is expressed in the Old Testament especially through God's free choosing of Abraham as the "father of the faithful," through divine covenants with Abraham, with the divinely constituted nation of Israel, and with the governing house of David. Such grace abounds when God's covenanted people fail to keep their covenant, yet God, after disciplining the covenant people …

Analyzing Media Representations Of Male Rape And Debunking Myths On 'Law And Order Special Victims Unit', Ryan J. Stephens Apr 2016

Analyzing Media Representations Of Male Rape And Debunking Myths On 'Law And Order Special Victims Unit', Ryan J. Stephens

Celebration

The project that I have done shows the importance of recognizing that male rape does exist and that it is more frequent than people think. By using Law and Order Special Victims Unit I am able to portray how myths about male rape are debunked and how the show creates new ways of thinking about male rape. Little research has been conducted about male rape and what we do know comes from the myths that are created in society and reinforced by false representations in the media. The research also concludes that we need more research to fully understand the …

Dendron, A Collection Of Poems, Peter W. Rosenberger Apr 2016

Dendron, A Collection Of Poems, Peter W. Rosenberger

Celebration

“Dendron” is the Greek word for “tree.” “Dendrochronology” is the study of a tree’s rings. “Dendrites” are the neural projections that grow like a tree’s branches in our brains so we can learn and respond to stimuli. This collection of poems, Dendron, is a poetic exploration of my growth. The collection—twenty-one poems, one for each year of my life—is a living, poetic memoir. Presented in chronological order, each of the poems is meant to capture a specific year of my life. The poems—of varying styles and sentiments—are not without quick moments of fiction, but for the most part, they coalesce …

The Roma And Sinti In Germany: Orientalism And Exclusion From German Historical Narratives (Romantisiert, Kriminalisiert, Und Abgewertet: Orientalismus Und Narrative Der Roma Und Sinti In Deutschland), Kimberly A. Longfellow Apr 2016

The Roma And Sinti In Germany: Orientalism And Exclusion From German Historical Narratives (Romantisiert, Kriminalisiert, Und Abgewertet: Orientalismus Und Narrative Der Roma Und Sinti In Deutschland), Kimberly A. Longfellow

Celebration

The Roma and Sinti represent presence and absence in German culture. Although there has been a population of Roma and Sinti in Germany for centuries, they are often perceived by the German majority population as distinctly "eastern" and, as such, non-German. The perceptions of Roma by the German majority population mimic Orientalist assumptions, where the Roma are romanticized, criminalized, and generally devalued in comparison to Eurocentric narratives. Through an analysis of the Roma presence in German history, literature, and current events, one can see that the experience of the Roma in Germany is largely structured by the perceptions and assumptions …

The Evolving Depictions Of Women In Films About The Holocaust (Die Sich Entwickelnden Darstellungen Von Frauen In Visuellen Texten Zum Holocaust), Alexandra J. Leclaire Apr 2016

The Evolving Depictions Of Women In Films About The Holocaust (Die Sich Entwickelnden Darstellungen Von Frauen In Visuellen Texten Zum Holocaust), Alexandra J. Leclaire

Celebration

This paper explores how women are depicted in films about the Holocaust. Close readings of three films about the Holocaust reveal that the year of production, not the gender of the director or country of origin, is the greatest factor in how women are depicted. The miniseries Holocaust (1978) set the stage for depictions of women as naive and sexualized. Europa Europa (1990) continued to depict women in a typical way, as set by Holocaust (1978). Phönix (2014) departed from typical depictions of women by showing them as independent and not sexualized.

Vietnamese Contract Workers In The East German Republic, Sean W. Hough Apr 2016

Vietnamese Contract Workers In The East German Republic, Sean W. Hough

Celebration

This paper will analyze the historical and cultural conditions that affected how the German Democratic Republic treated one of its largest minority groups, the Vietnamese. During the height of the Cold War and as Decolonization reached its peak phase in the 1960s and 70s, these two factors pushed the GDR and Vietnam closer, which resulted in an exchange in workers. Contract Workers were brought to the GDR to work in an environment "united in socialist solidarity." However, despite this rhetoric, age-old racism, xenophobia, and Orientalism still infiltrated the so called "Socialist Paradise," as the GDR was often called by its …

Skyscrapers Of Rome, Elizabeth B. Condie Apr 2016

Skyscrapers Of Rome, Elizabeth B. Condie

Young Historians Conference

After the death of his mentor, Julius Caesar, in 27 B.C.E., Caesar Augustus scrambled to establish his power over the people. One of the tactics he used to exert his power was architecture. Throughout the years, succeeding emperors followed his example to use architecture as a means to control public image, maintain military and political authority, and display their divine power. The Roman forum, the Coliseum, and the Arch of Titus give insight into the control of the Roman Emperors. From these buildings sprang many different types of architecture, that are still used to display the power of states and …

Women In Power: The Unique Position Of Vestal Virgins In Ancient Rome, Elizabeth D. Walker Apr 2016

Women In Power: The Unique Position Of Vestal Virgins In Ancient Rome, Elizabeth D. Walker

Young Historians Conference

The Vestal Virgins, priestesses in Ancient Rome, were placed in an atypical position of power. They were given many religious responsibilities that replaced the traditional expectations for women of Antiquity. This cult of the goddess Vesta lasted for the majority of Roman civilization, seemingly serving as an argument for an advancement in the rights of ancient women. Though the Vestal Virgins seem to be an outstanding exception to the rule of female oppression throughout history, further examination suggests that the role of Vestal priestess was simply another mode through which Roman men could control their female counterparts.

The Islamic Iberian Peninsula: Cultural Fusion And Coexistence, Miguel A. Claxton Iii Apr 2016

The Islamic Iberian Peninsula: Cultural Fusion And Coexistence, Miguel A. Claxton Iii

Young Historians Conference

The Islamic invasion of the Iberian Peninsula in the 8th century was the first occurrence of Islam reaching mainland Europe. Rather than bloody battles or wars fueled by ideological differences, which usually accompany invasions, the invasion of Iberia lacked any major conflict or bloodshed. The following four hundred years of Islamic dominance in the region is characterized by the same lack of conflict. Through initial limited exposure, and eventual cultural fusion, Muslims and non-Muslims were able to coexist in a society that was uniquely multicultural.
