Fiction As A Resource In Participatory Design, Eva Knutz, Tau U. Lenskjold, Thomas Markussen
Fiction As A Resource In Participatory Design, Eva Knutz, Tau U. Lenskjold, Thomas Markussen
DRS Biennial Conference Series
In recent years, co-design research has moved into the heart of business and organisational matters of concern. As a consequence of that fact, the idea of what design is capable of evolves into something that does not only encompass product and service design, but also at the same time changes organisations’ way of doing things – or in other words, it challenges the organisational culture and the mindset of the decision-makers as a way towards the successful embedding of a project within the organisation. This paper investigates how the development of a new service design project together with integrated co-design …
Perception, Meaning And Transmodal Design, Mathias Nordvall, Mattias Arvola
Perception, Meaning And Transmodal Design, Mathias Nordvall, Mattias Arvola
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Our perceptual system allows us to experience and make meaning of the world through different modalities. We can move between feeling, seeing and hearing things and still makes sense of our world. Our cognitive activities are transmodal. In interaction design this means that both our design processes and our users’ interactions are transmodal. We have gained insights into how transitions between modalities, both in the design context and in the users’ interaction context, modulate meaning and experience, by analysing three interactive systems: SimProv, VibEd, and Sightlence. We propose that a transmodal design approach facilitate designers to realize the communicative potential …
Design For Resourceful Ageing: Intervening In The Ethics Of Gerontechnology, Elisa Giaccardi, Lenneke Kuijer, Louis Neven
Design For Resourceful Ageing: Intervening In The Ethics Of Gerontechnology, Elisa Giaccardi, Lenneke Kuijer, Louis Neven
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper discusses an innovative approach to the design of technologies for older people. The approach contains a critique of “gerontechnology” as taking decisions out of the hands of older people and materializing what it means to live healthily and well into “foolproof” designs that easily become inappropriate in the variety of situations in which older people end up using them. The proposed design approach focuses on re-delegating such ethical decisions to the point at which technology is used. It does so by considering technologies as resources that can complement the ageing competences of older people and adapt in a …

Building A Distributed Collaborative Model For Digital Scholarship Support At Liberal Arts Institutions, Iris Jastram, Austin Mason, Sarah D. Calhoun
Oberlin Digital Scholarship Conference
Much has been published on digital scholarship support models for large universities, but digital scholarship infrastructures for undergraduate colleges have received less attention in the literature. At Carleton College, we are in the process of developing a distributed collaborative model for support that involves librarians, academic technologists, faculty, undergraduate student workers, and other experts on campus. How can we capitalize on our unique institutional strengths as small liberal arts colleges while navigating the competing interests and expectations of diverse campus constituencies? This session allowed the participants to strategize and begin to build a framework for digital scholarship support at their …

Non-Algorithmic Inquiry In The Digital Age, Christopher Gilman, Jacob Alden Sargent
Non-Algorithmic Inquiry In The Digital Age, Christopher Gilman, Jacob Alden Sargent
Oberlin Digital Scholarship Conference
We notice, from our vantage point as alt-ac faculty who work in a digital scholarship center that students often confuse digital research with a rote process of “search and collect.” We propose that a successful deployment of undergraduate research at the course level requires a greater involvement from librarians in the design of the course structure and its assignments as well as greater intention from faculty in the curation of research materials. In this workshop we discuss case studies, present course design scenarios and suggest a collectively-developed protocol for working with faculty on courses involving class-wide research projects.

The Next Thousand Days: Planning For Digital Scholarship Engagement Into The Future, Kris Macpherson
Oberlin Digital Scholarship Conference
A discussion that focused on the incorporation of digital scholarship into reference/research and instruction departments, including if/how our new undertakings broaden our mission and learning outcomes, our roles and job descriptions, and the ways we collaborate with other groups in our libraries, IT and across campus. How does the inclusion of DS in campus courses complement, incorporate or compete with information literacy? How do we see ourselves moving forward -- what are we adding and what are we dropping, and how are we retraining ourselves to incorporate digital scholarship into our programs?

Learning From Success: Approaching Data Management In The Humanities With Optimism And Good Cheer, Iris Jastram, Kristin Partlo, Sarah D. Calhoun
Oberlin Digital Scholarship Conference
Scientists and Social Scientists are well supported and accustomed to thinking about the life-cycles of their data and writing data management plans. The variety of humanities data and the novelty of managing it over its life-cycle often leads to confusion at best and chaos at worst during humanities research projects. In this discussion session we looked at a template for a humanities data management plan, successful data management plans for grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, and discussed what humanities faculty at our institutions need to know about data management and what support structures they need in order …

Trail Guide For New Teachers: Working With Graduate Teaching Practicum Students In First-Year Writing, Sara M. Whitver
Trail Guide For New Teachers: Working With Graduate Teaching Practicum Students In First-Year Writing, Sara M. Whitver
Library Instruction West 2016
Come hear how one instruction coordinator librarian used the writing across the disciplines tradition to move beyond inviting new writing teachers to participate in one-shot library instruction to developing deep and lasting teaching collaborations. By assigning reading homework and conducting freewriting exercises during visits to the practicum class, librarians can engage new teachers in critically examining the crossover between writing and information literacy during their first-year as writing instructors. By assuming this role of co-educator, librarians have the opportunity to help first-time writing teachers develop collaborative relationships with librarians early in their teaching experience in order to lay the groundwork …
A New Variant Of Baccarat For Vip Players, Stewart N. Ethier, Jiyeon Lee
A New Variant Of Baccarat For Vip Players, Stewart N. Ethier, Jiyeon Lee
International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking
In 2013 baccarat generated over US$41 billion in revenue for the 35 casinos of Macau, of which nearly US$30 billion was attributed to VIP players (high-stakes gamblers). Although the VIP market segment has declined over the past two years, it is still substantial. In this talk we propose a new variant of baccarat that will appeal to and attract VIP players. Its appeal lies in the facts that (a) it has a historical connection to baccarat and (b) it is closer to a fair game than is baccarat.
Class, Gender, Intersectionality: Gambling Experiences Of The Finnish Baby Boomers Of The 1940s And Early 1950s, Riitta Matilainen
Class, Gender, Intersectionality: Gambling Experiences Of The Finnish Baby Boomers Of The 1940s And Early 1950s, Riitta Matilainen
International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking
The presentation focuses on the concepts of class, gender and especially intersectionality in the field of gambling studies. Whereas class and gender are widely used and acknowledged concepts within the field intersectionality has not yet received wider attention by scholars of gambling. Intersectionality is understood as a theoretical framework which helps to analyse how people are divided into political, social and economic classes depending on their gender, class position, age, residence, ethnicity, sexual orientation etc. The methodology originated in the feminist studies in the 1980s but my own understanding has been mostly influenced by the work of sociologist Beverley Skeggs. …
The Literary Movement Of Dany Laferrière; Francophone Literary History And The Future Of French Literature- Brady Welvaert, Brady M. Welvaert
The Literary Movement Of Dany Laferrière; Francophone Literary History And The Future Of French Literature- Brady Welvaert, Brady M. Welvaert
Celebration of Learning
Haitian-Canadian-American author Dany Laferrière breaks the bonds of literary terms of categorization. In North America, French-language literature has a history of isolation and suppression, but the literature from Dany Laferrière pushes past boundaries placed by those who seek to categorize him. Laferrière, who identifies as “American” and wants to be seen as nothing else, seeks to embody an American identity in context of all of North America. But is there a sense of unity throughout North America despite borders, whether they are of countries our linguistic? Additionally, his election to the French Academy merits some questions worth addressing, considering a …

From Debussy To Duke: A Look At The Role Of Music, Race, And Sexuality In The Works Of Dany Laferrière, Kendall Smith
Celebration of Learning
Music is used every day as a way of expression. Dany Laferrière, a Haitian born author, uses music in his works to give the reader an idea of racial stereotypes of the black man and white women. The two books that will be the focus of this paper are Comment faire l’amour avec un Nègre sans se fatiguer (How to Make Love to a Black Man Without Getting Tired) and Vers le Sud (Heading South), which use jazz and classical music, respectively. Jazz music, specifically Duke Ellington, is used to show men’s and women’s sexuality through the lyrics and history …

Gandalf And Guardini: A Fresh Look At The Theology Of J.R.R. Tolkein's The Lord Of The Rings, Margaret Stadtwald
Celebration of Learning
My Honors Capstone looks at the various critical responses to the theology of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, with a focus on Augustinian theology. It then posits that the modern/postmodern theology of Romano Guardini better encompasses the work’s theological depths and worth as a piece of literature.
