In the current work environment, businesses are expecting more than the workforce can provide. This gap in expectation is leading to higher rates of resignation due to increased burnout. To further understand this issue, strategic design methods were utilized as part of the research process. By studying the historical reasons behind these shifts, and interviewing employees that experienced burnout, paradoxically, strategic design methods were also determined to be the solution. A company will go through a design journey facilitated by a strategic design studio so that the unique differences in each company culture are considered. A workshop that is a …

Are Service Designers Positioned To Design For Sustainability?, Kendon Jung, Mauricio Mejía Oct 2023

Are Service Designers Positioned To Design For Sustainability?, Kendon Jung, Mauricio Mejía

IASDR Conference Series

We have designed systems that influence the daily choices of 8 billion people and have brought our world to the brink of collapse as a result. In this context, designers, in general, have been concerned with sustainability for a long time. While the field has acknowledged that not only product design but also services and systems are spaces to address sustainability, much of the literature has centered on creating methods and tools. This work could be limited in preparing designers for action because prescriptive guides are rarely easy to implement in designing activities. Leveraging design to intentionally shift a linear …

Shifting Identities: New Materialities Of Power And Control, Joaquin Santuber, Pablo Hermansen Oct 2023

Shifting Identities: New Materialities Of Power And Control, Joaquin Santuber, Pablo Hermansen

IASDR Conference Series

Identities, as the materialities that produce them, are changing with the translation of analogue methods of individualization into digital ones. In 2020, with the mobility restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic, private and public services moved online performing new forms of identities. From in-person interactions, we —users— were reduced to pixels and data objects which constituted our digital identities: a username, a password, and a profile picture. In Shifting identities, we analyse these changes in an iconic context in the history of identities: a court of justice. Traditionally, a courtroom was a space to perform the authority of the State—a …

Glitch Pluriverse, Ayushi Jain, Vaidehi Supatkar, Ying Tang, Mohammad Sial

IASDR Conference Series

Designer's position and authority have long been challenged. However, “Design” has only recently stated responsibility for its direct impact on social structures (Escobar, 2017; Fry, 1999; Maze, 2019). Among many new “Designs”, there is an emerging decolonizing design movement in which members pursue ontological change rather than additive diversifying measures that would only uphold and sustain colonial institutions and systems. This paper focuses on design critiques related to Design’s ability to perpetuate coloniality. Starting from our lived experiences, we expand on how Design alienates different worldviews by promoting, appropriating, and erasing the subaltern population. Following that, we present our methodological …

The Full And The Empty. A Dialogue Between Chinese Painting And Design, Estelle Berger, Dominique Christian Oct 2023

The Full And The Empty. A Dialogue Between Chinese Painting And Design, Estelle Berger, Dominique Christian

IASDR Conference Series

This pictorial paper stages the generative dialogue between a designer-researcher-teacher and a philosopher-teacher-painter in the Chinese tradition. Through cultural decentring and exchange of perspectives, we aim at questioning designers’ posture. More specifically, the polarities of “empty” and “full” are used to discuss the sense of authorship, and the balance between engagement and letting go in practice. The paintings that punctuate the text are neither used as simple illustrations nor as achievements, they constitute another type of narrative thread in our dialogue, that we hope will trigger readers’ sensitivity, reflection, and action.
