Co-Creation Through Digital Fabrication Technology: A Systematic Literature Review, Sehrish Khan, Sohail Ahmed Soomro, Dorina Rajanen, Georgi V. Georgiev

IASDR Conference Series

Co-creation is one of the popular methods for designing nowadays. Similarly, digital fabrication technology (DFT) is commonly used in all design research, education, and manufacturing industries. DFT is considered an effective way to make prototypes of any design due to usage of multiple types of tools. DFT is mostly used in various fabrication spaces like fab labs and makerspaces. Therefore, using DFT in makerspaces to materialize a design using co-creation is apparently a desired scenario for making prototypes of design ideas. Previous research points towards the use of design thinking model while making designs in makerspaces using DFT. However, there …

How Might We Design Alternative Worldviews? Assessing A Design Education Program For Business Professionals, Tomohide Mizuuchi, Daijiro Mizuno, Yasuhiro Yamasaki, Mizuki Tajima, Masafumi Kawachi

IASDR Conference Series

In recent years, there has been a need for design that contributes to "futuring" as Tony Fry points out. The emergence of educational programs that promote futuring, such as transition design seminars at Carnegie Mellon University, is beginning to be observed globally. Yet their business applications have not been fully designed in many cases, and effective design education on defuturing/futuring is urgently needed. Keeping the status quo while challenging the global environmental crisis has contradictions and limitations. To drive business, it is imperative to transition the underlying worldview itself. For such a transition to succeed, business professionals with the necessary …

Prototyping A 7-Meter Frameless Dome As Emergency Shelter: Test Build Viability And Devise Team Strategies, Kyle Taniguchi, Joanna Hu, Jiayi Young

IASDR Conference Series

The COVID-19 pandemic profoundly impacted the world, highlighting existing inequalities, social injustices, and significant ecological and humanitarian crises. Adapting to a changing post-pandemic world necessitates a redesign of emergency shelters conducive for quick setup and takedown at the onset of an emergency. Geodesic domes are a possibility because of their structural strength, and they use the least amount of material while providing maximum interior space for the occupants. Although geodesic domes have widespread recognition and diverse contemporary uses, their inherent complex geometry poses difficulties in setting them up quickly. This construction challenge is due to the large number of required …

In order to support designers and businesses in going circular, various theoretical frameworks, methods, and strategies for circular design have been conceived in recent years. Yet, the need for more evidence of how to help circular design in practice remains. This study aims to bridge the gap between theory and practice in the field of circular design by proposing a tool to help …

Is Gift A Token Of Gratitude Or An Imposition Of Identity? Facilitating Positive Consequences Of Gift-Giving With Receiver-Centred Design, Houjiang Liu, Miso Kim Oct 2023

Is Gift A Token Of Gratitude Or An Imposition Of Identity? Facilitating Positive Consequences Of Gift-Giving With Receiver-Centred Design, Houjiang Liu, Miso Kim

IASDR Conference Series

Gifts are more than things; they represent and tie together human relationships. While people often treat it as a token of social interactions, the presentation of a gift could impose an identity that reflects gift-givers’ images of gift-receivers. Because gift-giving is a social behaviour situated in the cultural and economic context, the perceived value of gifts is greatly affected by the social norms and the consumer market, in which design plays an important role. In this paper, we first discuss how commodities can be transformed into gifts and what kinds of design activities influence such transformations. We found that most …

Global Goals, Local Future Stories: Unpacking Contrasts And Visions Of Circular Economy Activities In Neighbourhood Makerspaces, María Laura Ramírez Galleguillos, Damla Çay, Aykut Coşkun

IASDR Conference Series

Circular makerspaces have the potential to contribute to sustainable development goals (SDGs) by promoting circular-making activities such as reusing, repairing, refurbishing, and recycling. However, community building is essential for maintaining a circular makerspace, which requires engaging the makers and future users in circular-making activities. In this paper, we argue that involving locals in the design of circular makerspaces can facilitate community building and support makers' sense of belonging to the space. We present the experience of involving citizens in establishing circular makerspaces in seven European cities as part of the EU-funded H2020 project, [Project Name]. We developed a technique, called …

More Than Human Empathy: A Caring Approach To Ecosystemic Design, Mariana Pestana Oct 2023

More Than Human Empathy: A Caring Approach To Ecosystemic Design, Mariana Pestana

IASDR Conference Series

This paper argues for a caring approach to design based on more-than-human empathy. It proposes that such an empathic turn can provide a useful framework for eco-systemic thinking and practice in design, because it takes into consideration the wellbeing and the rights of people but also that of non-human bodies. To do that, this paper reports on a study concerning the conception and delivery of a design Biennial, entirely created and experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic, which gathered thinkers, practitioners, researchers and community groups to collectively discuss, scrutinise and rehearse the role of design in a post-anthropocentric, more-than-human paradigm. For …

Unlocking Creative Potential: Idea Generation Training For Design Students, Wonjoon Chung Oct 2023

Unlocking Creative Potential: Idea Generation Training For Design Students, Wonjoon Chung

IASDR Conference Series

For most designers, the ability to generate creative and compelling ideas is an essential skill. Achieving creativity often requires breaking away from traditional thinking and exploring new and unconventional ideas, thinking beyond the limits of conventional thought processes. While the most unconventional and wild ideas that emerge from this exploration are often the ones that lead to innovative and creative design solutions later stage, nurturing the early seed ideas into viable design solutions requires more than just exploration. It also requires a thorough understanding of creative logical thinking principles, such as abductive reasoning and bisociation, as well as experiencing them …

Why Design Matters In Local Business Commoning, Yedam Ryou, Chorong Kim, Eunji Woo, Ki-Young Nam

IASDR Conference Series

The role of design is vital in facilitating the collaborative activities among various stakeholders in "commoning". Commoning local businesses can lead to the revitalization of a local economy with the local residents generating both commercial and social benefits. However, commoning in general is geared toward creating social benefits. As such, the existing model of commoning is not suitable for local business commoning. The few existing cases of local business commoning show that residents and proprietors benefit from exchanging resources based on their needs, but these exchanges tend to take place in ad-hoc and/or one-off ways. Therefore, this research aims to …

Queering Futures With Data-Driven Speculation: The Design Of An Expanded Mixed Methods Research Framework Integrating Qualitative, Quantitative, And Practice-Based Modes., Jess Westbrook

IASDR Conference Series

Creative research, “tends to resist binary or categorical thinking,” and can gather both qualitative and quantitative data. Just both? Why stop there? The Queering Futures Framework (QFF) disregards traditional mixed methods research conventions. It Queers methodology. After intersecting concurrent qualitative and quantitative modes, it wanders and stretches into a practice-based mode. It is in the culminating creative practice-based mode that signals identified in the qualitative and the quantitative datasets are compared, scanned, probed, mined, and leveraged using a new futures method I call data-driven speculation. Data-driven speculation is a practice-based research method. Data-driven speculation uses signals as sparks in the …
