Between Law And Theology: Russia's Modern Orthodox Canonists, Vera Shevzov

Religion: Faculty Books

Chapter Abstract: This chapter surveys the Orthodox scholars who developed the academic study of church/canon law in modern Russia. The story begins in 1863 with the decision to establish departments of church law in the law faculties of Russian universities. The university-based pioneers were joined by peers in Orthodox theological academies, where parallel degree-granting departments of church/canon law were established in 1884. The chapter offers an overview of the family background, education, and career paths of the modern canonists as an identifiable, albeit diverse, professional group. Five of the most productive canonists are presented in greater detail with a focus …

An Arrow Against Profane And Promiscuous Dancing. Drawn Out Of The Quiver Of The Scriptures. [1686], Increase Mather, Paul Royster , Ed.

Zea E-Books Collection

"The unchast Touches and Gesticulations used by Dancers, have a palpable tendency to that which is evil."

When a dancing master arrived in Boston in 1685 and offered lessons and classes for both sexes during times normally reserved for church meetings, the Puritan ministers went to court to suppress the practice. Increase Mather (1639-1723) took the leading part, writing and publishing this tract, which compiles arguments and precedents for the prohibition of “Gynecandrical Dancing, [i.e.] Mixt or Promiscuous Dancing, viz. of Men and Women … together.” These justifications were certainly shared with the court, which found the dancing …

The Ballet Folklórico De San Antonio: A Vehicle Of Empowerment And Cultural Preservation Through Dance, Victoria Villasenor Jan 2021

The Ballet Folklórico De San Antonio: A Vehicle Of Empowerment And Cultural Preservation Through Dance, Victoria Villasenor

Capstone Projects

Since the mid 20th century, ballet folklórico has been a source of community, identity, and = celebration for Mexican Americans across the United States. Despite the popularity throughout Texas, its migration from Mexico to the United States is not well-documented nor widely known. Utilizing digital media, oral histories, personal artifacts, and archives this project is an effort to capture the development of ballet folklórico in San Antonio as a pillar of the city’s identity and reputation as culturally distinct. I share this history through the perspectives and experiences of the Ballet Folklórico de San Antonio (BFSA) dance company as they …

Saving The Nation: Chinese Protestant Elites And The Quest To Build A New China, 1922-1952, Thomas H. Reilly Jan 2021

Saving The Nation: Chinese Protestant Elites And The Quest To Build A New China, 1922-1952, Thomas H. Reilly

Faculty Books

While Protestant Christians made up only a small percentage of China's overall population during the Republican period, they were heavily represented among the urban elite. Protestant influence was exercised through churches, hospitals, and schools, and reached beyond these institutions into organizations such as the YMCA (Young Men's Christian Association) and YWCA (Young Women's Christian Association). The YMCA's city associations drew their membership from the urban elite and were especially influential within the modern sectors of urban society. Chinese Protestant leaders adapted the social message and practice of Christianity to the conditions of the republican era. Key to this effort was …

Con La Pluma Entre Dos Mundos - Blogs Of Latin American Culture And Identity - Prologue, Blog 1-2, Damaris Serrano, Fátima Araúz, Megan Mckarns, Michael Daniel Curtis Stanley

Con la pluma entre dos mundos

This volume III contains two blogs on Hispanic/Latin American culture and identity but goes beyond a link in cyberspace: the creative work presented in these blogs represent a journey through the culture of Spanish-speaking countries –including the United States– and dwell on the peculiarities that shape identity.

The works are the product of intense discussion and analysis in class, by groups and in individual and collective presentations, and consider historical aspects from the conquest by the Spaniards to the present time.

A dynamic that contrasts Modernity with Postmodernity, the classic with the innovative prevails. Here you will find texts in …

Religious Non-Affiliation: Expelled By The Right, William Vance Trollinger Jan 2021

Religious Non-Affiliation: Expelled By The Right, William Vance Trollinger

Books and Book Chapters by University of Dayton Faculty

For the past century, the bulk of white evangelicalism has been tightly linked to very conservative politics. But in response to social and cultural changes in the 1960s and 1970s, conservative white evangelicalism organized itself into the Christian Right, in the process attaching itself to and making itself indispensable to the Republican Party. While the Christian Right has enjoyed significant political success, its fusion of evangelicalism/Christianity with right-wing politics—which includes white nationalism, hostility to immigrants, unfettered capitalism, and intense homophobia—has driven many Americans (particularly, young Americans) to disaffiliate from religion altogether. In fact, the quantitative and qualitative evidence make it …

Books and Chapters

This chapter appears in the book, Historicizing Sunni Islam in the Ottoman Empire, c. 1450-c. 1750.  Edited by Tijana Krstic and Derin Terzioglu.

Chapter abstract:  What characterizes Ottoman Sunnism, and how did it come to be? The conventional view is that by roughly the middle of the sixteenth century the imperial elite came to adopt and promote a particular religious identity, which can be characterized by several overlapping, interrelated, and historically defined denominational (madhhab) affiliations, as well as a particular relationship with the political hierarchy. The favored denominations included Hanafi legal affiliation and Maturidi kalām orientation, accompanied by elite …

Legal Translation In A Political Context: The Trick Of Choosing Between Alternatives In Translating Electoral Terms, Zakia Deeb Jan 2021

Legal Translation In A Political Context: The Trick Of Choosing Between Alternatives In Translating Electoral Terms, Zakia Deeb

Abdou Filali-Ansary Occasional Paper Series

Legal electoral terminology is a specialist subject within the broader legal language discourse. When translating into Arabic, even basic electoral terms can be translated differently in different Arab countries for various reasons due to different sources of inspiration. Most legal electoral terms have a variety of alternative equivalents within the relevant linguistic field or semi-legal domain. This paper discusses such alternatives while presenting problems related to the existing resources in the field. Data collected from the 2012 election of members of the Libyan General National Congress are analysed to test the consistency in selecting from these alternatives. Furthermore, material presented …

Artistic Representations Of Goitre In Early Modern Art In Italy, Danielle Carrabino Jan 2021

Artistic Representations Of Goitre In Early Modern Art In Italy, Danielle Carrabino

Museum of Art: Books

Chapter abstract:

Sometimes accompanied by cretinism, which stunts physical and cognitive development, goitre was described in ancient and early modern texts alike as especially prominent, or 'endemic', among the low, labouring class living in the mountainous regions of Italy. Close analysis of the sculptures at the Sacro Monte of Varallo, Caravaggio's Crucifixion of Saint Andrew, Neapolitan presepi, and Ribera's prints will expand on Merke's categories to demonstrate that the representation of goitre in this period was varied and complex. Caricature is the vehicle for another source of the definition of goitre in early modern Italy. Moreover, the sheet provides evidence …
