Forall X: Introduction To Formal Logic, Version 1.40, P.D. Magnus
Forall X: Introduction To Formal Logic, Version 1.40, P.D. Magnus
Philosophy Faculty Books
In formal logic, sentences and arguments in English are translated into mathematical languages with well-defined properties. If all goes well, properties of the argument that were hard to discern become clearer. This book covers translation, formal semantics, and proof theory for both sentential logic and quantified logic. Each chapter contains practice exercises; solutions to selected exercises appear in an appendix

Libertarianism, Bas Van Der Vossen
Libertarianism, Bas Van Der Vossen
Philosophy Faculty Books and Book Chapters
Libertarianism is a theory in political philosophy that strongly values individual freedom and is skeptical about the justified scope of government in our lives. Libertarians see individuals as sovereign, as people who have a right to control their bodies and work, who are free to decide how to interact with willing others, and who cannot be forced to do things against their will without very strong justification.
For some, the argument in support of this view hinges on the principle of self-ownership. To them, individual rights are morally foundational, the basic building blocks of their theory. Many others, however, take …

2017-2018 Women Innovators in the Performing Arts
Known worldwide for its passionate musicality, impressive technique and expansive repertoire, the Shanghai Quartet melds traditional Chinese folk music, masterpieces of Western musical literature and cutting-edge contemporary works. Lu’s virtuosity allows her to blend techniques and styles – modern and traditional, Eastern and Western –defying expectations for this “simple” instrument.

Tastes Of Faith: Jewish Eating In The United States, Leah Hochman
Tastes Of Faith: Jewish Eating In The United States, Leah Hochman
The Jewish Role in American Life: An Annual Review
"Tell me what you eat, and I will tell you what you are," wrote the 18th Century French politician and musician Jean Brillat-Savarin, giving expression to long held assumptions about the role of food, taste, and eating in the construction of cultural identities.
Foodways—the cultural, religious, social, economic, and political practices related to food consumption and production—unpack and reveal the meaning of what we eat, our tastes. They explain not just our flavor profiles, but our senses of refinement and judgment. They also reveal quite a bit about the history and culture of how food operates and performs in society. …
