Schmucker Art Catalogs
Artists, perhaps to emphasize their own dedication to the intellectual and manual skills required for making art, have long been drawn to the theme of labor, both in their depictions of workers and scenes of making. In the late seventeenth century, Dutch paintings frequently portrayed earnest and diligent artisans performing trades at shops or on the streets. Later, rapid economic, social and political changes throughout Europe in the mid-nineteenth century led to a more radical approach to realist representations of labor. This exhibition ART/WORK: Labor, Identity, and Society considers these art-historical precedents to explore the issues of labor in art. …
Studying The Binding Of Portland State’S Codex To Localize Production, Allison Kirkpatrick
Studying The Binding Of Portland State’S Codex To Localize Production, Allison Kirkpatrick
Extra-Textual Elements
This paper examines Portland State’s 1490 codex as a material object by studying the stamp designs on its covers to determine where and when it may have been bound.
Four stamp designs are discernible, and these were compared to rubbings of stamp designs from fifteenth- and sixteenth-century incunable bindings in the Einbanddatenbank and Scott Husby Database. The findings from this study point to Erfurt, Germany, and more specifically the workshop of Nicolaus von Havelberg (active 1477–1506), as the probable binding site.
Database Of Marginal Notation In The Psu 1490 Codex: Objectives, Organization, And Continuation, Andi Johnson
Database Of Marginal Notation In The Psu 1490 Codex: Objectives, Organization, And Continuation, Andi Johnson
Extra-Textual Elements
Portland State University Library's combined 1490 editions of the Fasciculus temporum and Malleus maleficarum contain over 150 individual marginal markings and notations. These marks have been made by numerous readers throughout the monograph's five-century lifespan.
This report accounts for efforts to construct a tool that would allow future students and scholars to visually compare and organize marks was needed before any in-depth analysis of readership could be made, describing the objectives, processes and applications that have defined its development. The tool that was needed was a visual database that enables the visual comparison of markings within the two texts. This …
Review, Introduction, And Preliminary Documentation Of Marginalia In Portland State University’S Fasciculus Temporum/Malleus Maleficarum Sammelband, Samuel Barnack
Extra-Textual Elements
This paper presents an overview of the contents of the new database of written marginal notations in Portland State University’s fifteenth-century printed codex, and some of the research threads that can be taken up from a study of those notations.
The motive for this project was an interest in readership usage of the codex and the two books contained within it. It begins by discussing terms that Andi Johnson and I elected to use to tag and name different categories of features, then I discuss some of the findings and possible future research avenues that can expand on them.
Finally, …

Hunting The Other: Witch Trials In Lorraine, 1490s-1590s, Morgan Gubser
Malleus Maleficarum
This paper provides a general survey of witch trials in sixteenth-century Lorraine, where Portland State’s 1490 incunable was held by the abbey of Saint-Avold (Saint-Nabor) of Metz. It includes a brief introduction to the region, information on structures of authority, and a description of the witch trials undertaken there.
It will also include notes on what statistical analysis currently exists regarding Lorraine witch trials, as well as notes regarding the connection that witch hunting has to the PSU Malleus Maleficarum in Lorraine. There is also a statistical analysis included that takes data collected from the existing database of witch trial …

Possible Methods For Incunabula Digitization For Preservation And Analysis, Steven Andrews
Provenance and Preservation
This paper explores different approaches that PSU’s Special Collections Department might take toward digitizing its 1490 incunable containing Werner Rolewinck’s Fasciculus temporum and second-edition Malleus Maleficarum. Digitization will reduce wear-and-tear of the volume and allow access to its contents by a wider range of users.

Feed The Little Children Evaluative Research Report: Somebody Cares, Anne Poelina, Vennessa Poelina, Ian Perdrisat, Sandra Wooltorton, John Guenther
Nulungu Reports
The purpose of the report is to investigate the social, cultural and health impacts on Broome children and families who are supported through Feed the Little Children Inc. (FTLC) bi-weekly food relief program, and to try to determine what the optimum level of support should be. Researchers have taken an Indigenist research approach, which means that Aboriginal ways, values and goals support research implementation. The research framework focused on the lived experience of the FTLC users and data was collected via conversations with FTLC users’ aunties, grandparents, and long-term Broome residents. The report concludes that Broome children would benefit from …

In 2017-2018, Hodos Institute conducted a study of leadership practices and leadership formation in faith-based substance abuse rehabilitation centers in Eurasia. We interviewed more than 60 administrators and workers in Christian rehab centers. We also developed an online questionnaire that was completed by more than 500 persons who had been clients of rehabilitation centers. This book presents the review of major observations and findings of the given study. We also propose basic recommendations on leadership and Christian mission in the context of Christian rehabilitation and social adaptation ministry provided to those who experience substance abuse problems.
This book highlights fundamental …

Wine Journey: Tasting Dwelling Learning at The Kitchen Table
These stories are from of an odyssey that began over 50 years ago. In my final year of college I planned to attend law school. A passage in Plato (Republic III 405a) was the catalyst of an unanticipated realization that I would pursue my goals more authentically teaching philosophy at the college level. Two years earlier (1968) I had made an abrupt change abandoning a chemistry major, and to study in Vienna, Austria for a year, searching to find my own path. My interest in wine did not arise in that year but the seeds that soon grew into a …

Wine Journey: Tasting Dwelling Learning at The Kitchen Table
The names in this essay’s sub-title sketch its outline. An image by Albrecht Dürer and a poem by Seamus Heaney, essays by Eric Auerbach and Erwin Panofsky are new inclusions into a rambling immersion into Heraclitus Heidegger Rilke and Hölderlin. The resulting octet gives major solo roles to the new contributors while at the same time deepening the wonder at the questions arising. The first seven chapters and the late-added overture were each written as stand-alone works and had breaks of time separating them. This new essay began before Learning to Taste (Ch. 7) was completed. While completing Learning to …
